The in-demand US DJ unfurls dubby, dance floor poetry. Where does sentimentality fit on the dance floor? For Liv Klutse, AKA livwutang, the answer is everywhere. The New York-based DJ is guided by a deep desire to stir connection, finding themes and points of correspondence across an impressively broad range of sounds, tempos and eras. This emotional intuition lends Klutse's sets a depth few others can match. Her selections can seem unpredictable, rooted in an appreciation for feeling over genre—hard and soft sounds are carefully balanced with surrealism and bursts of nostalgia (for instance, the Lazy Dog bootleg edit of Everything But The Girl's "Tracey In My Room"). But as versatile as she is, a few signature traits colour her style, such as a love for dubwise music and rhythms from across the Black diaspora, alongside a refreshingly introspective energy that invites dancers to find moments of meditation—even during peak time. A former staffer at our New York office, Klutse has long merited an RA Podcast. Her slow-burning blends and mystical selections have graced near-enough every major festival and club out there, from Dekmantel and Sustain-Release to Nowadays, where she's been a resident since 2022. Despite this cross-continental touring schedule, she still plays plenty of grassroots venues—testament to her days with TUF collective and Orphan Radio in Seattle, as well as her enduring belief in the power of DIY, community-orientated dance music. "How did you come down off life?" James Massiah asks at the beginning of RA.975. Across nearly 90 minutes, Klutse's downright beautiful mix seeks answers to this question, reflecting on hedonism in times of political decay. She's in full-on dub mode, moving through meditative bassweight, glitchy house and flat-out weirdo techno with a deftness we've come to expect from one of the most promising, singular voices in dance music right now. She's got there all on her own terms—and we couldn't be prouder. @livwutang Read more and find the tracklist ra.co/podcast/975
Happy Friday (following the longest week of 2024).First up, artist and poet James Massiah has claimed that bestselling author Coco Mellors (Blue Sisters) brazenly based one of her characters on him. Beth, Ruchira and Oenone dig into the story and ask: just how much can artists borrow from real life, especially when inspiration comes from people around them? Also, would you sign up for an influencer academy? A New York Times feature dives into influencer Valeria Lipovetsky's new and exclusive scheme that promises to help budding influencers break into the industry. Is it a scam or a savvy business idea for everyone involved? And finally, a "global gender divide" is sweeping the world, as experts warn that more and more young men are voting right, as young women vote progressively. A political split is widening between the two everywhere from the UK, to South Korea and Tunisia. Are we f****d as a society? Thank you so much for listening to us. We love every single person who blasts us in their ears - especially those who follow us and gift us a 5* on their podcast app. ----------- https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/760838/fundamentally-by-nussaibah-younis/https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/17/movies/anora-review.htmlhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b0b7r2k6/mortimer-whitehouse-gone-fishing https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/nov/04/london-poet-accuses-author-coco-mellors-of-basing-blue-sisters-character-on-himhttps://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/12/11/cat-personhttps://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/what-it-felt-like-when-cat-person-went-viralhttps://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/26/style/influencer-creator-method-valeria-lipovetsky.html https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-elections/exit-polls https://cawp.rutgers.edu/gender-gap-voting-choices-presidential-elections https://www.ft.com/content/29fd9b5c-2f35-41bf-9d4c-994db4e12998 Hosted on Acast. "The honesty of my music and poetry comes from church." The South London artist discusses his turn away from religion and his love of sound systems as the city celebrates 56 years of Notting Hill Carnival. The annual Caribbean street parade Notting Hill Carnival has taken place in London since 1966 to celebrate the influx of immigrants brought to the UK during Windrush. Carnival is a celebration of the rich and multifaceted artistic heritage that came with them, especially in the form of Afro-Caribbean music, dance and sound system culture. The South London-born poet, producer and NTS Radio host James Massiah is one of a generation of musicians who has been influenced by the city's Afro-Caribbean cultural legacy. In this interview, he talks to Errol Anderson of the South London-based curatorial platform Touching Bass about his connection to London's sound systems and his own artistic evolution. His output centres around hedonism and what he calls "joyful living"—a reaction to the church community he grew up in. Many of the lyrics on his most recent EPs, like True Romance, paint a picture of drugs, partying, sex, addiction and heartbreak (he's even gone on to name his recurring poetry night Adult Entertainment). Music, he reflects, has provided a powerful and cathartic means to express himself and open up. In his youth, Massiah wasn't just shaped by his church, he says, but by the Afro-Caribbean genres circulating through his neighborhood: '80s funk, raga, garage, grime and a form of Jamaican dancehall called Yardie. Later, as he was exposed to popular rock and house music, he took the sensibilities he heard in pop acts like Fleetwood Mac and applied them to a Caribbean musical framework. His sound palette is an uncanny amalgamation of Stevie Nicks' ethereal voice with the stylings of soca—a sub-genre that fuses calypso, reggae and Caribbean zouk. Listen to the episode in full.

Our host this week is artist and musician GAIKA - he was born in London and raised in the city's night clubs. He released his debut mixtape Machine, in 2015 and since released a string of projects including BASIC VOLUME and Seguridad. He has collaborated with some of the most renowned names in contemporary music, including 3D of Massive Attack, Dean Blunt, Kelela, Mike Skinner, Mykki Blanco and SOPHIE. Alongside his music he has also created a number of art installations and has just released his new album Drift. Joining him are a group of artists whose music incorporates hip-hop, dub poetry and experimental pop – plus lots of spaces in between. First is British rapper Speech Debelle, who released her debut album Speech Therapy in 2009, which went on to win the coveted Mercury prize. She released two further albums in 2012 and 2017. In June the self-confessed food lover shared her latest album Sunday Dinner On A Monday. Next up is a singer-songwriter, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Lucinda Chua. Based in South London, she primarily uses her voice, a cello, and an array of effects units to create her music, and released her debut album Yian in March. Finally, South London-born poet and musician James Massiah, a wordsmith who has built a reputation for his literary voice. His collaborators include The xx and Massive Attack. He released his Natural Born Killers EP in 2019 and at the end of last year shared the latest in his New Poems series, Volume 4. Together they discuss their song-writing process, whether they are led by words or music, and the psychological effect of creativity. In the second half of the programme, Speech Debelle takes us through a playlist called Music Is Good Food, featuring tracks from Black Uhuru, Prince, Kelis, plus more.
