Joining us today is a fearless and brilliant actress whose career has seen her light up stage and screen in everything from Sherlock to Mr. Selfridge, and whose life off-screen has been just as dramatic, heartbreaking, and inspiring as the roles she's played. It's the lovely Amanda Abbington! In this episode, Amanda opens up about the defining chapters of her life so far, reflecting on the quiet end of her first marriage during one of the busiest periods of her career and how she began to rediscover herself as a single mum while navigating both the menopause and the chaos of modern dating. She also shares the story of finding love again with escapologist Jonathan Goodwin, who proposed just 30 minutes after they met, only for a life-altering accident to turn their lives upside down just weeks later. Amanda discusses Jonathan's remarkable resilience, the strength of their love in the face of adversity, and the small, life-affirming moments that keep them going. She also talks about her experience on Strictly Come Dancing – what led her to walk away, the storm that followed, and the importance of speaking up for herself and others. With humour, vulnerability and strength, Amanda reminds us that even in the hardest moments, joy, love and laughter are never far away. You can catch Amanda in her new play This Is Not a Happy Room at Theatre Royal Windsor from 13–17 May.For all the latest news, click here to follow us on Instagram!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. A Ghost Story for Christmas is a series of annual British short films first broadcast on BBC One from 1971 to 1978, and sporadically revived by the BBC since 2005. With one exception, the original films were directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark and shot on 16 mm color film. The series aimed to adapt classic ghost stories for television, echoing the tradition of telling supernatural tales at Christmas. So far, we've covered A Warning to the Curious and The Signalman in Episode 21, Whistle and I'll Come to You and Stigma in Episode 32, and The Stalls of Barchester along with The Treasure of Abbot Thomas in Episodes 41a and 41b.This year, we're bringing you Lost Hearts on New Year's Eve. But tonight, Christmas Eve—the traditional night for ghost stories—we'll be discussing The Ash Tree. Written for the screen by David Rudkin and based on M.R. James's short story, The Ash Tree was directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark. Looking back at Clark's credits, it's surprising we haven't mentioned that he also directed one of our favorite monkey-man TV drama events from the 1990s—Chimera. That's definitely something we should cover, assuming we can find a way to watch it. The Ash Tree aired on December 23, 1975, and featured Edward Petherbridge in the dual roles of Sir Richard and Sir Matthew. According to IMDb, Petherbridge began his career in 1961 and appeared in a wide range of film and TV roles. He's apparently best known as the sharp and snooty sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey in The Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries. Impressively, he kept working until 2017, with one of his final roles being the voice of a gentleman fish in one of Tim Burton's Alice films. The cast also included Preston Lockwood as Dr. Croome, Barbara Ewing as Anne Mothersole, and, happily for our status as a secret Doctor Who podcast (though perhaps less happily for James), Lalla Ward as Lady Augusta. Barbara Ewing had an impressive career on the small screen, appearing in shows like Peak Practice, Casualty, The Bill, an episode of Hammer House of Horror, and even the Pertwee-fronted game show Whodunnit?. She also appeared in Chiller, a British horror/fantasy anthology series from 1995 that Ross has somehow never seen but seems to pop up constantly on people's CVs. are you two aware of this and should we be covering it?) Beyond acting, Ewing is also an accomplished novelist, with nine books to her name. Her novel A Dangerous Vine even made the long list for the Orange Prize. Lalla Ward had a fascinating career trajectory. Her first film after leaving the Central School of Speech and Drama was Hammer's Vampire Circus. She was close friends with Douglas Adams, who famously took her as his date to a screening of The Empire Strikes Back in the early 1980s. Adams also introduced her to her second husband, Richard Dawkins (for whom she would later provide illustrations for his controversial books), at his 40th birthday party—they were the only two who showed up on time! Of course, her first husband was Tom Baker, with whom she starred in Doctor Who as the second incarnation of the Time Lady Romana from 1979 to 1981. There really should be a General Witchfinders drinking game where you take a sip every time we mention someone in this next bit: In 2019, a modern-day audio adaptation of The Ash Tree was released by Bafflegab Productions. Written by Matthew Holness, it starred Amanda Abbington, Reece Shearsmith, and John Sessions. Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. She believes finding laughter in adversity has helped her through many challenges, from divorce to grief over her mum's death.. Emma will speak at Pause Live! menopause event on 25 November - with Liz and Michelle also attending - offering a hilarious, unfiltered perspective on relationships and womanhood. BEST MOMENTS   "I'm the only woman in history who gained four and a half stone for her wedding." The Empire Podcast studio - sorry, podbooth - is a sacred place. We don't throw our doors open to just anybody, you know. They have to be a) funny b) interesting and, most importantly, c) available and willing to lower their standards for an hour or so. Amanda Abbington, star of Sherlock and Netflix's new thriller, Safe, is all of those things, and so this week becomes only the fourth celebrity co-host in our history. Yes, Amanda (follow her on Twitter as @CHIMPSINSOCKS) was brave enough to sit in a room with Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, and James Dyer and discuss the week's movie news, talk about her work on Safe, endure yet another Peter Dinklage in Infinity War impression, and tackle the big question: have you ever walked out of a film? Happy Thursday Two Shot Podcast listeners. Thanks for downloading and listening. This week we were in the esteemed company of actress Karen Bryson. We met Karen down at Maison Bertaux on the our annual British sunny day (as you may be able to tell from the massively overlit picture that accompanies this edition).Karen is a fantastic woman, she speaks with vigour and passion on every single one of the many subjects we touched upon. You may know her from Channel 4's Shameless or from the BBC's Cuffs where she starred alongside previous guests Shaun Dooley and Amanda Abbington, or from the Jed Mercurio series Bodies amongst many other things. It was a pleasure to be in her company for the hour or so we spent together and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it.We were nominated for a prestigious British Podcast award last week in the 'Best Culture Podcast' category and we're very proud. It's now up to a panel of expert judges but there's another category that we could do with your help in: The 'Listeners' Choice Award'. Richard Coles and Aasmah Mir are joined by Paul Young. His music was the sound of the 80's, with a multitude of chart topping hits, he won Best British Male at the Brit awards, toured Europe and America, and sang the opening lines of 'Do they know it's Christmas' for Band Aid in 1984. Paul Young talks about his passion for music, performing, 'Tex Mex' and Soul, the theme of the first solo album he's released for 20 years. Deta Hedman is ranked number one by the World Darts Federation. An unexpected achievement given that she was born in Jamaica and works full time for Royal Mail. She'll join us in the studio to talk about the competitive spirit that has seen her become a legend in darts. Growing up in Fleetwood, Lancashire, almost surrounded by water, Neil Howard Pritchard was fascinated with the sea. Then, a near-death experience on the lifeboat slip when he was eight years old triggered an interest in boat making, and he's been crafting intricate model boats ever since. He'll join us from Liverpool to talk about his work and passion for lifeboats. Today is Get Creative day with hundreds of events happening all over the country and if you want to find out what is happening in your area there is a link at the bottom right of this web page, together with a link for more information about Fleetwood lifeboats. James Massiah is a spoken word artist who is fronting the BBC Turn it Up campaign. He joins us to talk about the power of radio and expression. Sherlock and Mr Selfridge actor Amanda Abbington chooses her inheritance tracks. She inherits Dear Prudence by The Beatles and passes on Furious by Joan as Police Woman. Peter Shilton talks about his love of oysters and how he met his fiancée. And we'll have your thank yous. Paul Young's album is 'Good Thing' and will be released on 15 April.

[]On New Year's Day 2012, a facebook post stopped The Baker Street Babes in their tracks. Amanda Abbington was asking how to become a Baker Street Babe. After we recovered (it took some time), we began a delightful conversation with Amanda about Sherlock and beyond. After a few months of schedule dancing, work, school, and New Zealand, The Babes (Curly, Ardy, Turk,  & Kafers) and Amanda were finally able to meet up and what you're about to listen to and read is what came of it. We can honestly say this was such a delight and a treat. Not only was it just fun, but it was insightful. Amanda has been dubbed The Queen of Fandom by BBC Sherlock enthusiasts, and rightfully so. she's reached out to fans unlike anyone else, breaking The Fourth Wall and embracing fan culture. Incredibly charming, witty, and caring, she has become quite special to many of us. Please note this episode was recorded at the end of April and in a restaurant. While perfectly listenable, it may be worthwhile to follow along in the transcript. For those who don't know, Amanda Abbington is an English actress and comedienne who has appeared on television and stage. She is best known for her roles in the 2005 comedy sketch show Man Stroke Woman and the 2007–2008 comedy After You've Gone with Nicholas Lyndhurst. She has also appeared in recurring series such as Coupling, Casualty, and Dream Team. She is the longtime partner of British actor Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson in Sherlock. She has a facebook group devoted to her, suitably entitled: . (A partner to her husband's .) You can follow her on twitter at and her and Martin's delightful (and hysterical) dogs
