Actor Val Kilmer died on April 1st of this year, after a long battle with throat cancer. He was 65. Kilmer's film career began in the 1980s with iconic turns in the likes of Top Gun and Real Genius, but it was in the 1990s where be became an icon in a decade known primarily one dominated by iconoclasts, starting with his portrayal of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's The Doors, and including memorable bit roles in movies like True Romance, replacing Michael Keaton as Batman in Batman Forever, and what man consider his greatest role as Doc Holiday opposite Kurt Russell's Wyatt Earp in Tombstone. Kilmer was an avid documentarian of his own life and was rarely without his camcorder. His own video tapes were repurposed to tell the story of his life and career in the moving and insightful documentary Val, directed by Ting Poo and Leo Scott, which captures a man who seems to know his time is almost up reflecting on the lessons of a life extraordinarily lived. That film formed the basis of this conversation between John and Julia discussing the strange life and career of this remarkable actor.

This week on the pod, after the boys catch up, honor David Lynch, and give three mini-reviews, the boys discuss 1993's “True Romance”, the film that makes you ask, is Quentin Tarantino a better writer or director? Not that it really matters, of course, but Tony Scott directed this Tarantino/Avary script to cult superstardom. It's Dave's favorite QT film (maybe), and Jeff and John realize why they both liked it and think it could have been better to watch. Crazy! Mini-reviews are short, spoiler-free reactions to new films. This week we have “Nosferatu”, “A Complete Unknown”, and “The Brutalist”. Don't want to hear us talk to each other? No worries, ass! How did we feel about them in retrospect and with hindsight in our rear view mirror? Listen on and find out! TRUE ROMANCE, 29min., Canada Directed by Katherine Costal A lovesick teenager tries to rekindle her relationship with a past boyfriend by inviting him to a surprise party, only to discover the harsh truth behind their romance and the love lives of the guests. https://www.instagram.com/kat_costal/ Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? I got the idea for it after watching other people's love lives, and seeing all the emotionally immature and unaffectionate behaviours they encountered. I noticed that a lot of people fall into these kinds of relationships but it happens most commonly to the younger crowd. I wanted to depict some of those dynamics from an outside perspective and show what observing the dating culture can look like. I think that when you're in your teens and early twenties, love and romance can be too serious of a thing for you to know how to navigate, so your early relationships will likely end badly. For that reason I think it can be difficult to find love in the world when you're a hopeless romantic. At the same time, there's societal pressure to begin dating at a young age, and that pressure's just not necessary when it's perfectly okay to be single and use that time to understand yourself. I wanted to tell people that they shouldn't be disheartened by the hurtful or incompatible behaviour they may experience, and that they should wait for the person that satisfies the idea of romance they have. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video? I enjoyed hearing the audience's thoughts and what they each took away from the film. I especially appreciated how a lot of them identified the types of relationships I was depicting and I hope that they understood the satirical nature of this film. It was fun to see them react to the conflicts and listen to how they perceived the surrealistic way the characters talked and behaved. I had speculated before what viewers would think of the semi-surrealism that I put into it so the feedback video is very helpful to me in gauging that. I really liked how each of them seemed to have their own favourite thing about the film and it's nice to hear their opinions. Midge Raymond's new novel love and tragedy is based on a true story.
Despite its glut of stars, memorable scenes, and winning performances, Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette's wild ride often gets overlooked. Can anyone romanticize a Mexican standoff better than Tarantino, even when director Tony Scott is the one visualizing his script? Hit the road with the Brains to see if this Hollywood rollercoaster leaves you queasy or jonesing for more.
In this episode, I talk with film journalist and host of the podcast ‘McFly's Movie House' Marta Djordjevic about four iconic movies involving lovers on the run: Bonnie and Clyde, Badlands, Wild at Heart, and True Romance. What makes these movies similar and what sets them apart? How do each accomplish telling a story of doomed (or redemptive) love? What do themes of crime, passion, anti-authority, and self-revelation reveal about these kinds of stories and why we return to them again and again?Marta's Podcastfollow and subscribe to the show on your favorite platform via the link below:https://linktr.ee/martynstrange Hosted on Acast. "The honesty of my music and poetry comes from church." The South London artist discusses his turn away from religion and his love of sound systems as the city celebrates 56 years of Notting Hill Carnival. The annual Caribbean street parade Notting Hill Carnival has taken place in London since 1966 to celebrate the influx of immigrants brought to the UK during Windrush. Carnival is a celebration of the rich and multifaceted artistic heritage that came with them, especially in the form of Afro-Caribbean music, dance and sound system culture. The South London-born poet, producer and NTS Radio host James Massiah is one of a generation of musicians who has been influenced by the city's Afro-Caribbean cultural legacy. In this interview, he talks to Errol Anderson of the South London-based curatorial platform Touching Bass about his connection to London's sound systems and his own artistic evolution. His output centres around hedonism and what he calls "joyful living"—a reaction to the church community he grew up in. Many of the lyrics on his most recent EPs, like True Romance, paint a picture of drugs, partying, sex, addiction and heartbreak (he's even gone on to name his recurring poetry night Adult Entertainment). Music, he reflects, has provided a powerful and cathartic means to express himself and open up. In his youth, Massiah wasn't just shaped by his church, he says, but by the Afro-Caribbean genres circulating through his neighborhood: '80s funk, raga, garage, grime and a form of Jamaican dancehall called Yardie. Later, as he was exposed to popular rock and house music, he took the sensibilities he heard in pop acts like Fleetwood Mac and applied them to a Caribbean musical framework. His sound palette is an uncanny amalgamation of Stevie Nicks' ethereal voice with the stylings of soca—a sub-genre that fuses calypso, reggae and Caribbean zouk. Listen to the episode in full.
