THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ALTERNATIVE R&B. Please everyone stop the madness. On this episode, the cast is dissecting this specific bucket of music that the girls tend to use to separate themselves. Muse + Steph are here to break the news on what is and what AIN'T.Using a twitter convo that broke the R&B side of the internet about "White Boyfriend Music", your fave knuckleheads use examples like Kelela, Solange, of course Tinashe, and even FKA Twigs to debunk this ethos of Alt that is truly made up.As always LIKE, COMMENT, & SUBSCRIBE. This week we go back to basics and investigate what one of the world's hottest young women has to teach us about our own self hate (!). We revisit the classic STARGIRL paradigm of Ripe vs. Dead and examine the latent Threat of Dead beauty, and traverse Lily-Rose's metaphorical potential as a descendant of Hollywood Royalty, ready and willing sex object, and generational leader in her own right. We also revisit our conversation about the simultaneous crumbling of and longing for trusted institutions via a few current events: the LA fires and David Lynch's passing, the TikTok ban fakeout, and President Trump's inauguration. Plus! A Rave on classic and beloved Stargirl Sky Ferreira, from Helen
*Full episode on Patreon* Today we travel back in time to the early 2010s and delve into the moody, mysterious soundscape of Kelela, the singer and dance music producer who soundtracked my early twenties. We explore her evolution from Muse to a handful of forward-thinking, UK-based producers to an Artist in her own right, why she stands above the scores of more famous Alt R&B artists (FKA Twigs, Solange, SZA, Tinashe, etc.), and the ways she's employed more Narrative Control in recent years by explicitly defining her audience and who she will and won't work with. We also check in on the Club — the rules of it, who it is and isn't “for," and whether or not it's meaningfully alienating... anyone in 2025. PLUS! This episode features exclusive voice notes from my husband, weirdo music nerd, and former club kid, David
FAUZIA (@djfauzia) is an artist who is always evolving. The UK DJ, producer and live act first broke through as a DJ who played fast music be it techno, electro, IDM or bass-heavy breaks. Her famous NTS has always shown a different side, where anything from soul to jazz can be called upon to tell a story. As a producer since 2020, she has tended to mine a more emotive side with releases that explore dub, ambient and jungle. She has also done pop collabs with Kelela and sings ever more on her own material. Basically, she is anything but easy to categorise, and instead works in many different worlds with equal style and skill. For this week's mix, FAUZIA focuses on the dance floor with a thrilling 90-minute selection. The scene is first set with some escapist ambience, deep and beatless jungle and spine-tingling vocals but then some serious breakbeats arrive. They come thick and fast and take on many forms from heavy and apocalyptic to blissed out and astra. FAUZIA's own voice occasionally arrives to lend them a personal, intimate quality while the mix grows faster and more futuristic. It's a showcase that's as brilliant in taste as it is in technique.
The singular Príncipe artist showcases her shapeshifting sound. Before she was simply Nídia, Nídia Borges was Nídia Minaj. Modelled after a musical idol of hers, Nicki Minaj, in 2017, she shed the borrowed surname. As she later said in an interview with The New York Times, "Today I have my own identity. I'm not going to imitate something that someone has done already." And Nídia couldn't be further from an imitator. As one of Príncipe's two non-male members, her body of work stands apart even within Príncipe's unique sonic universe. She traverses a broader emotional territory and extends to collaborations with Fever Ray, Kelela and Yaeji. Her RA Podcast is a restless affair–60 minutes of pushing, pulling, tiptoeing and gliding through the sounds of the Príncipe universe. True to the label's communitarian foundations, the mix contains predominantly original and unreleased material from her colleagues. In 2014, DJ Lilocox told RA: "Whatever your age, skin colour, sexual orientation, money in the wallet, clothes on: Noite Príncipe is for all who come to dance... forgetting the outside world." A decade on, RA.957 echoes this sentiment, a celebration of Príncipe's enduring magic: delirious, transcendent dancing for all. @nidiasukulbembe Read more at ra.co/podcast/957
Wormhole techno from a DJ you need to know. KYRUH is a high-impact specialist forced in the crucible of modern NYC's notable spaces, including WIRE, Dweller and Bossa Nova Civic Club. Their sound is that of a DJ skilled at applying waves of pressure without requiring shortcuts through obvious terrain, adept at hammering it without defaulting to speed alone. After years burning a hole through the American underground, 2024 is proving to be a tipping point. KYRUH's appearance on Kelela remix compilation RAVE:N in early spring lit the touchpaper for a run of gritty productions and increasingly prominent slots across North America and Europe. The tracklist for their RA Podcast goes deep, accommodating contemporary producers like x3butterfly and Faster Horses alongside veterans Lady Starlight, Femanyst, House of God resident Paul Damage Bailey and underrated Swedish ripper Tobias Von Hoftsen. To those still wondering where to find 'proper techno' in 2024: look no further. @kyruhx Read more at ra.co/podcast/945

As a queer, black, female artist working with everyone from Solange to PinkPantheress, Swarovski to Ferragamo, Kelela has been pushing boundaries on representation in music and fashion since the early 2010s. After disappearing from the public and taking an extended social media hiatus, Kelela reemerged in 2023 with the critically acclaimed album RAVEN. Her sound dances at the intersection of R&B and electronic dance music. However, her work remains unapologetic in the way it honors the black roots of club music and culture. In conversation with The Week host Kikelomo, Kelela dives into her approach of educating and reading, her RAVEN era, the possibility of building worlds and communities –and the importance of staying offline sometimes. Follow Kelela on Instagram. Find Kikelomo on Instagram. Check out Kelela's Tiny Desk Concert and more of her music. Our host this week is artist and musician GAIKA - he was born in London and raised in the city's night clubs. He released his debut mixtape Machine, in 2015 and since released a string of projects including BASIC VOLUME and Seguridad. He has collaborated with some of the most renowned names in contemporary music, including 3D of Massive Attack, Dean Blunt, Kelela, Mike Skinner, Mykki Blanco and SOPHIE. Alongside his music he has also created a number of art installations and has just released his new album Drift. Joining him are a group of artists whose music incorporates hip-hop, dub poetry and experimental pop – plus lots of spaces in between. First is British rapper Speech Debelle, who released her debut album Speech Therapy in 2009, which went on to win the coveted Mercury prize. She released two further albums in 2012 and 2017. In June the self-confessed food lover shared her latest album Sunday Dinner On A Monday. Next up is a singer-songwriter, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Lucinda Chua. Based in South London, she primarily uses her voice, a cello, and an array of effects units to create her music, and released her debut album Yian in March. Finally, South London-born poet and musician James Massiah, a wordsmith who has built a reputation for his literary voice. His collaborators include The xx and Massive Attack. He released his Natural Born Killers EP in 2019 and at the end of last year shared the latest in his New Poems series, Volume 4. Together they discuss their song-writing process, whether they are led by words or music, and the psychological effect of creativity. In the second half of the programme, Speech Debelle takes us through a playlist called Music Is Good Food, featuring tracks from Black Uhuru, Prince, Kelis, plus more.

Brought to you by Amplitude—Build better products | Eppo—Run reliable, impactful experiments | Ahrefs—Improve your website's SEO for free—Casey Winters is a longtime and legendary advisor and operator. He's worked with companies like Airbnb, Faire, Canva, Whatnot, Thumbtack, Tinder, and Reddit and until recently was the Chief Product Officer at Eventbrite, where he managed the PM, design, research, and growth marketing teams. Before Eventbrite, he led growth and product teams at Pinterest and Grubhub. In today's episode, we discuss what Casey calls the “zero interest rate phenomenon” product manager and how to avoid becoming one. He provides valuable insights on thinking outside popular frameworks, shipping products efficiently, and avoiding overreliance on user research. We explore the three types of network effects, how to leverage them, and how to break someone else's network effect. Let's kick Monday off with Kelela's club-crushing, sexy rapture, “Happy Ending,” off her album Raven. On it you'll find the singer shifting and flowing through a sonic palette of improvisational jazz, pulsing dance, and electronica with a taste of R&B.
Chance takes a Daniel Caesar-inspired victory lap, following the release of "Let Me Go" and "Do You Like Me?" (1:10). The trio attempt to make sense of Travis Scott's 'Utopia' x Cactus Jack rollout plan, while reviewing the latest from Don Toliver(11:49). Taj and Chance have high praise for Kelela's 'Raven' and talk extended gaps between albums(21:15). Plus much more! This week's music in order played is ZelooperZ "Whitney Hueston," Dr.Bushman "Govy," Kelela "On The Run," and MAVI "HARRIET."
If you haven't stepped into an underground club in the last decade, you might be forgiven if you don't know Kelela. But the Washington, D.C. native has had a seismic impact on dance music since she broke into the scene in 2013. Now, after a six-year hiatus, Kelela is out with her fourth and latest record, 'Raven' – and with it, she's remaking the future of dance music. This week, host Brittany Luse sits down with Kelela to discuss Black queer liberation, and how she hopes this record helps folks find freedom on the dance floor. Kelela - "Happy Ending" a 2022 single on Warp It's been five years since we last heard from L.A.-based artist Kelela. Her 2017 debut LP Take Me Apart was a masterful set of adventurous electro-R&B, and her recent return to music — with the singles “Washed Away” and now, "Happy Ending" — show she hasn't missed a beat during that brief hiatus. Today's Song of the Day features production by LSDXOXO with additional production from Bambii. Drawing inspiration from "the rapture of a club crush" (as a press release states), it's fitting that the accompanying video (co-directed by Alima Lee and Kelela) captures the Black rave scene in NYC.
