Born in New York, some of his earliest musical influences included his mother's love for soca music and the distinct Caribbean rhythms of his culture. An appreciation of Jazz would be further guided by his father's expanding audiophile home system. Moving to Detroit in 1980, the start of the decade where Techno would take formation, put him at the center of music history while simultaneously working at the now famed nightclub “The Music Institute”Relocating to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College, he took it upon himself to bring more of the authentic House and Techno flavor to his new home, playing at numerous clubs and bars in the metro area. Eventually this led to DEEP, his aptly-named, game changing decade long Saturday night residency at local club MJQ, where he would bring guests such as King Britt, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Peven Everett, Kerri Chandler, Phil Asher and Joe Claussell.It is during the 2000s that Kai really sets his stride. 2002 saw the release of his first production, ‘The Kaizer EP', on Brett Dancer's seminal deep house label Track Mode. After a few releases on other labels such as Moodymann's Mahogani Music, Deep Explorer & Real Soon. A few years later he would co-found the Labor Day weekend outdoor event House In The Park with DJ Ramon Rawsoul which now has over 15,000 attendees.2008 saw the creation of his label NDATL and the first edition of his annual Deep Detroit. NDATL stands for the cities that have played a role in his musical development: New York, Detroit, ATLanta. Which is home to many of his own productions and A List producers such as Larry Heard, Mr. G, Theo Parrish & Mike Huckaby to name a few.e has recently curated the boutique Kai Alcé Eyewear line. “The Kaizer” never stops moving. A love of life, mixed with his flair for originality, willingness to experiment and devotion to the dancefloor has cemented his place as a pillar in American dance music history. Broken beat, or bruk, is intrinsically collaborative. Its London originators often recorded together, taking inspiration from jazz, hip-hop, deep house, drum & bass and Afrobeat. Because the genre was born of fusion, it brought together heads from all corners of the music spectrum—sound system purists to junglists to Latin Nuyorican aficionados—who each resonated with bruk's complex rhythms in their own ways. Ian Grant, AKA IG Culture, is an early pioneer of bruk, and his story underlines the style's synergetic nature. Starting out as an MC, he struck fame in the early '90s as one half of Dodge City Productions but quickly grew disillusioned with the major label business. After immersing himself in early George Duke records, Fela Kuti, Fuji music, The Headhunters and the like, he started experimenting in the studio. The jazz inspiration, plus his roots in reggae and background in hip-hop and acid jazz, led to his now-seminal, late '90s productions as New Sector Movements—widely considered as the starting point in bruk history. Since then, Grant has kept building infrastructure for the hybrid sound. Alongside Bugz in the Attic, Phil Asher, Dego of 4hero, Demus and Orin Walters, he cofounded the legendary CoOp party, which became a meeting place for diverse musical minds and enabled bruk to keep evolving. Grant remains deeply committed to co-creating, as seen by the Selectors Assemble artist collective he runs with Alex Phountzi (the two are also known as NameBrandSound), his releases with Psykhomantus as Shall I Bruk It, his Afrofuturist take on bruk as Likwid Continual Space Motion and various other projects. On his RA Podcast, the veteran artist presents a forward-thinking portrayal of bruk, adjacent styles that were directly inspired by it and other global club cuts. We recently stumbled across this recording of Phil Asher's set from our 5th Birthday, way back in 2009. Back then we were called Uber and this event in December of '09 was the first time we had Phil with us to headline. And it certainly wasn't the last. It was also the very first Vocal Booth Weekender Reunion. It seems fitting we share this for our milestone episode 50 of the podcast. A tribute to Phil Asher. We miss Phil and think about him often, and we felt we just had to share this recording with you to make sure it's out there for all to hear. Phil was a true kindhearted, loving, down-to-earth gent, as well as being a pioneering producer and legendary DJ. He influenced us in a big way, like he did for countless others, and we looked up to him as the legend he will always be. Aujourd’hui : « Motor Launch For Hire » de Back To Earth.En hommage à au dj et producteur londonien Phil Asher, disparu ce vendredi à l’âge de 50 ans, ce Nova classic qu’il sortait avec son duo Back To Earth.Derrière ce nom, deux producteurs et musiciens londoniens, Phil Asher et Luke McCarthy, qui ont monté ensemble le label Restless Soul, label qui a fait le pont entre broken beat et house music. Back To Earth est un projet éphémère qui prend forme à la fin des années 90, le duo sort deux EP sur Laws of Motion, avant de monter d’autres projets et produire pour d’autres artistes. Ce Nova Classic est issu de Fin de Camin, côté musique, on pourrait dire, qu’il s’agit de soul électronique qui flirte avec la world. This episode of the Mucho Soul Show pays tribute to Paul Trouble Anderson who passed away on Sunday Dec 2nd. It's a replay of our opening Poolside Party Set at The Southern Soul Festival recorded back in late June in Montengro. It's also the last time we partied and played alongside Paul. We'd been travelling most of the day by plane and then mini bus with P.T.A alongside Phil Asher, Jake Holloway, Dom Servini The Mighty Zaf and a few others and had arrived late into the night but just in time to play our opening launch party set. It had been a very long day and we really didn't expect Paul to get there but somehow he found more Trouble energy and amazingly made the party and then proceeded to hold court in typical PTA style by dancing, joking and partying with everyone present. I think we played our set with Paul in mind that night with many Jazz Funk, Boogie and Trouble favs from back in the day mixed with some Soulful and Latin House and even a bit of Luther (track 4)... one of Troubles fav singers. Paul danced all night!... and that memory is one we'll always cherish now. This ones for you Paul. Mucho Soul & Love. It's an absolute pleasure to host this exclusive mix by Thatmanmonkz. We've had a very close eye on his progression for a while now and it's only fair we share his talent. His new EP, Overproof , came out on vinyl this week with support from, Kerri Chandler, Charles Webster, Soulphiction, Tensnake, Anton Zap, Ugly Drums, X-Press 2, Semtek, Flori, Jimpster, Brothers Vibe, Luke Solomon, Jojo Flores, Lars Behrenroth, Kiko Navarro, Rainer Truby, Glenn Underground, Pablo Valentino, Nick Holder, Manoo, Ennio Styles, 6th Borough Project, Leftside Wobble, Phil Asher, Atjazz and too many more to mention! teshno reviewthatmanmonkz’s first ep on tone control was a noteworthy release and, happily, so is the follow up. the story goes that scott moncrieff was given a crash course in production by arctic monkeys producer ross orton, but he’s clearly put a lot of time in since, because there’s a real personality to his records in both the moods and grooves. ‘overproof,’ like most of this man’s productions, just has a lovely vibe to it: there’s plenty of vintage, humid space, it’s louche and frayed round the edges and is a pleasurable place to be. it feels like there is no real agenda to get you dancing or to take you somewhere you haven’t been, rather the aim is to infect your soul with breathy vocal samples, musical basslines and delicately jazzy chords then see what happens. of course, you will dance in the end, but mundane functionality never enters in to it. ‘right on’ is the jewel in this ep’s crown, though: a hunched and knackered kick drum trudges heavily beneath much more light-fingered, moodymann-esque keys. nice enough already, to be sure, but it’s the subtle funk of the tumbling bassline that really seals the deal. also infected with various whispy trumpets and spoken word snippets, this is music with real atmosphere and presence that’s like a recording of a bustling house party rather than a wholly synthesized world of beats and bass… it’s very human, essentially. on the flip, ‘the feeling’ is full of them – soulful, romantic, warming vibrations that run right through you as they do the music. heat damaged organ notes, the distant squelch of fingers sliding up and down guitar strings and some subtly balearic licks from the same instrument all make for a woody, organic listen that makes you feel as if you are cuddled away in some candle-lit basement. soulful is an oft-overused descriptor when it comes to house music, but this shit really is. listen to, then buy it, at juno TRACKLIST 1. Hey all, found this old mix digging through old CDs. A mix on the housey side of things, being a big fan of the broken beat scene and the likes of Jazzanova clearly shines through here. Favourites include the deepness of Frank Roger's "Bone of my Bone", the massive Phlash remix of "Stuck" by Peven Everett, an early airing of Dennis Ferrer's remix of "The Cure and The Cause" (going out to Vicky and Agata!), it later charted in 2007 and merited a full release, big tune!
