Jarina de Marco - "Boca Chica" from the 2023 album Caribbean All-Inclusive Luxury on 3rd Culture Kid. This week's Songs of the Day spotlight artists who DJ Albina Cabrera will visit during El Sonido on the Road, a 10-day journey visiting Santo Domingo; Dominican Republic, as part of the invitation to the Isle of Light music festival; followed by our annual showcase featuring six Latin American bands at SXSW in Austin, Texas; and finally, arriving in Mexico City for the 2024 edition of the Ibero-American music festival, Vive Latino, which is also a partner of Live on KEXP from Mexico. Dominican-Brazilian pop artist Jarina de Marco makes deliriously infectious music. Beneath the shine and gloss of her immaculately crafted music is a poignant message. This has been true going back to songs like 2016's “Release the Hounds” which sounds like stomp-clap club anthem but on a deeper level was drawing On her latest album, Caribbean All-Inclusive Luxury, she coopts the capitalist sheen of a “dream vacation” as a biting protest satire. “Boca Chica” opens the album sounding like an advertisement that draws many tourists to places like the Dominican Republic. Not just that but it feels luxurious with her pristine vocals and lively production. But a deeper listen reveals de Marco is singing from the perspective of locals, exasperated by the spectacle of it all. That the song can exist as both a poignant commentary and a dance floor anthem is a testament to de Marco's incredible songwriting prowess. - Dusty Henry Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jarina De Marco makes an appearance on Mujeres In Media to chat with Jackie Quinones about music, boys, sex, history, & more. ✨Plus, get exclusive behind the scenes info on Jarina De Marco’s latest single “ELECTRICO,” along with a sneak peek of the song.✨——Dominican and Brazilian recording artists Jarina De Marco embodies the sound of the multi-ethnic future. Her work definitely transcends categories and borders. She is a creative visionary who sings in four languages; English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Jarina spearheads all aspects of her project: songwriting, production, visual design, and video direction. As an outspoken advocate of women's rights and human/gender equality, Jarina's music is a unique blend of global consciousness and global rhythms. She simultaneously supports the message of resistance, while creating a colorful sound entirely her own.In creating an affinity between genres, Jarina de Marco's genre-spanning behavior proves there are no creative process boundaries. With folkloric ancestral sounds derived from African and Indigenous communities of the Dominican Republic and Brazil, and the deep Jazz and flirty pop that enamored her youth, Jarina de Marco's distinctive sound amplifies citizens of the world. Her contribution to the music industry and Latinx community is one that has made an impact. Motivated by her identity's layered realities and the political and social complexities in the community, the multilingual singer-songwriter, and visual artist can infuse various styles that transcend languages and borders and carry social-consciousness. Due to popular demand, she drops the Vida-popularized track "Electrico" September 29th. The song is one of the many tracks she created working closely with ‘Vida’ show creator Tanya Saracho, curating beats, sounds, and wording for specific scenes and characters. Her upcoming project “Caribbean All-inclusive Luxury”, a spoof of the many hotels that exist in the Dominican Republic, is set to drop in 2021. It will be the first project in which the artist emphasizes love, romance, and intimacy in her lyrics and topics.——For more information about Jarina De Marco, please visit: Instagram: @JarinaDeMarcoFacebook: Jarina De MarcoTwitter: @JarinaDeMarcoWatch the “ELECTRICO” music video.
