On this week's Talkhouse episode we've got a pair of talented musicians in a chummy chat about making songs and making a life while making songs. It's Melina Duterte, aka. Jay Som, and Pascal Stevenson, aka. Fashion Club. Stevenson just released the second Fashion Club album, A Love You Cannot Shake, but it's different enough than the first that it almost feels like a debut. That surely has something to do with the fact that it's the first Fashion Club music since Stevenson's gender transition; there's a genre freedom that wasn't as evident on the first one, which felt a bit closer to Stevenson's indie-leaning band Moaning. A Love You Cannot Shake clearly honors big pop music but it frequently swerves before giving into any obvious trappings. She found some fantastic guests to add to the sideways fun, too, including Talkhouse Podcast alumni Perfume Genius and Julie Byrne as well as the other half of today's conversation, Jay Som. Now Jay Som made a splash with her first couple of bedroom-pop albums in 2015 and 2016, and though she hasn't released a new album since 2019's fantastic Anak Ko, she's been busy nonetheless, both starting some new projects, producing for other musicians, and playing bass for the indie-rock supergroup Boygenius. She's been working on new material of her own as well, and she had a song on the soundtrack to the critically acclaimed movie I Saw the TV Glow alongside like-minded artists like Caroline Polachek and The Weather Station. And of course there's her contribution to the Fashion Club record, “Ghost.” Check out that song right here. In this lively conversation, Stevenson and Duterte chat about songwriting, including Stevenson's tendency to start with the biggest parts and Duterte's opinion on what constitutes a “treat” while you're producing. They tell each other toward the end of the conversation which pop star they'd most like to write for, and we learn that Stevenson's specialty is what she calls “fucked-up ballads.” Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:20 – Start of the chat 4:45 – On Fashion Club's album, A Love You Cannot Shake 9:20 – Melina loves Pascal's record 13:30 – Contrasting approaches to songwriting 16:36 – "Everyone's a little different when it comes to what I call 'treats'" 31:36 – "Do you think it's easier now to become a producer?" Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Pascal Stevenson and Melina Duterte for chatting.

Before Palehound released “The Clutch,” a rippin' rock song and the first single off of their new LP, Eye On The Bat, we'd most recently heard the vocals and elevated guitar work of El Kempner as one half of the duo Bachelor. Kempner teamed up with Melina Duterte of Jay Som to form the supergroup and deliver the stand-out 2021 record Doomin' Sun. But just as the recording of Doomin' Sun was finished in early 2020, and Kempner hit the road with Palehound to tour their own solo work, the world shut down. Eye On The Bat, a 10-song collection written around and largely about that holiday break-up, finds Kempner once again excelling at the plainspoken. Webpost

i’ve been in my summer home for a week. it’s cool, it’s just quiet. i’ve gotten so used to a crowded house. but maybe it makes sense to hibernate a bit during the summers here. lay low. ride around sometimes after the sun goes down. and during the day you keep the blinds drawn to keep the cool in. maybe in that darkness i could try making my own sounds, practice drawing, etc. i hope the quietude allows for some creative moments that just didn’t have a chance against the constant activity in the old house. i wouldn’t trade the past year at all, but i could perhaps work towards more of a balance moving forward.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Soakie “What’s Your Gender” Soakie02:04 Too Free “ATM” Love in High Demand06:43 SEABLITE “High-Rise Mannequin” High-Rise Mannequins10:25 bb slugs “at ur apartment” had we met any earlier, it would’ve been too soon13:41 Man Made Hill “Preferential Treatment” Mass Wasting16:55 WUT “Daily Chores” NOW18:51 Mount Sharp “Domes” That Shadow22:12 Quality Cable “Bug on the Wall” Channel Fever26:10 Parlor Walls “Violets” Heavy Tongue28:45 Lee Baggett “Always Something” Uncanned32:18 Purr “Giant Night” Like New36:30 Spinning Coin “Avenues Of Spring” Hyacinth39:42 Launderette “Mannequin Man” Brain Wash (Demo)42:08 DEAN CERCONE “Wandering Feeling” TREBLE SCULPTURES COMPILATION (selections from the vault 13’-18’)46:44 BOOSEGUMPS “Perfect Autumn Day” 5 Demos48:45 Jay Som “A Thousand Words” A Thousand Words51:58 OOF “Does Anyone Live In This Town Anymore?” EGO53:10 chemical club “are you alone are you upset” mutual psychosis55:05 Modern Needs “Secondhand Embarrassment” Survey of the Animal Kingdom57:18 VACANT GARDENS “OPEN AIR” UNDER THE BLOOM

We had the pleasure of interviewing Hrishikesh Hirway over Zoom video!Acclaimed musician and Song Exploder host/creator Hrishikesh Hirway's first EP under his own name, Rooms I Used to Call My Own, is out now. The album features collaborations with a long list of acclaimed artists, songwriters and producers including Yo-Yo Ma, Jay Som, Baths, Jenny Owen Youngs, Jimmy Tamborello (The Postal Service, Dntel), Jonathan Snipes (Clipping), John Mark Nelson and Grammy-winners John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen) and Kimbra.Rooms I Used to Call My Own marks the first time Hirway has released music under his own name following five critically acclaimed records under the moniker The One AM Radio. A deeply personal work, the EP is informed by Hirway's experiences as a podcast host; eschewing the inward gaze of his previous work as an artist, Rooms I Used to Call My Own instead focuses on collaboration, each song formed out of a conversation of sorts with everyone he's brought into the project with him. Likewise, the subjects of the EP are all other people: the people he loves. The songs are about the deep love and appreciation he holds for his wife, Lindsey, as well as his parents and family.Hirway is also set to continue his Spring tour with Jenny Owen Youngs, performing select dates throughout the west coast in May. They'll be on stage together, doing one combined set of all their songs, performing as a duo. Jenny and Hrishikesh have collaborated as co-writers on several songs and are both storytellers, as hosts of popular, award-winning podcasts: Hrishikesh with Song Exploder, The West Wing Weekly and Home Cooking; and Jenny with Buffering the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars Investigations. These special performances will be a mix of songs and stories from two dear friends; find tickets HERE and see below for a list of dates.Hrishikesh Hirway has been producing music for over two decades; first with his project The One AM Radio, and later with MOORS, a collaboration with Oscar-nominated rapper/actor Lakeith Stanfield. As a composer, his credits include the Netflix original series Everything Sucks!, the theme for ESPN's 30 for 30 podcast and the theme for the Song Exploder series on Netflix. Hirway launched the award-winning podcast Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and tell the stories behind their inspiration and creative process, in 2014. Since then, the podcast has been streamed and downloaded over 65 million times, and has featured guests including Fleetwood Mac, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Solange, U2, Arcade Fire, Metallica, Lin-Manuel Miranda, The Roots and many more. Hrishikesh Hirway has been making music for as long as he can remember and, as an adult, spent years building a career in the industry, writing, performing, producing, and touring. But, it was a moment where he took a bit of a pause to re-evaluate that led him to record an interview with a friend about the story and creative decisions behind a song that would change everything. That conversation eventually became the opening episode of the podcast, Song Exploder, which itself then exploded into a global phenomenon that I've been obsessed with since hearing that first episode. Now, it's grown into not just an award-winning podcast, but also a Netflix original television series where musicians break down the creative process behind their songs, featuring many of the biggest names in music like Alicia Keys, Billie Eilish, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Dua Lipa, The Killers, so many others. And, building on the success of Song Exploder, Hrishikesh has now grown a network of shows, producing and co-hosting the award-winning podcasts Home Cooking, with chef and author Samin Nosrat, and The West Wing Weekly, with actor Joshua Malina. He's also the host and producer of the Partners podcast. All the while, he's continued to write and perform his own music, releasing four albums under the moniker The One AM Radio, and an EP with Moors, his project with Lakeith Stanfield. As a composer, he has written music for film, television, and podcasts, including the score for the Netflix series "Everything Sucks!" and the theme to ESPN's "30 for 30" podcast. Recently, he released two singles, “Between There and Here," which features Yo-Yo Ma, and “Home,” featuring Jay Som. These, in fact, are the first songs he's released in 10 years, and the first under his own name. On this week's Talkhouse episode, which we recorded as part of the On Air Festival, we've got a kind of unusually focused conversation about another person entirely: It's Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie along with Meg Remy of U.S. Girls, talking at length about legendary artist Yoko Ono. It's not just out of nowhere, though: Ben Gibbard, who you almost certainly know as the frontman of Death Cab For Cutie, whose impressive catalog has shaped indie-rock over the past two decades, recently curated a compilation that pays tribute to Ono's music. He's a man on a mission, which as you'll hear is not to re-evaluate Yoko Ono's vast catalog, but really to evaluate it in the first place. What people tend to know about Ono's music doesn't reflect the variety of her output, and her narrative as the villain in the Beatles story is ridiculous. To that end, Gibbard gathered a killer lineup to cover Ono's songs for an album called Ocean Child. Musicians features in the collection include David Byrne with Yo La Tengo, Sharon Van Etten, Jay Som, Japanese Breakfast, the Flaming Lips, and of course Death Cab for Cutie themselves. Also included on Ocean Child is U.S. Girls, the musical project of Meg Remy. She's been making music under the name for the past 15 years or so, amassing an impressive collection of records up to an including 2020's Heavy Light–a Pitchfork best new music designee. She's a perfect fit for a tribute to and conversation about Yoko Ono, since she's not only a huge fan but clearly influenced by Ono's sonic and political fearlessness. Before they get to chatting Yoko, Gibbard and Remy talk about Covid—there were some positives in it for Remy, who also gave birth to twins recently—and hotel notepads. Then it's on to Yoko, whom they both deeply admire: They talk about her records, her art, and how the recent Get Back documentary kind of exploded the narrative on her vis a vis the Beatles. It's a great chat about a worthy, misunderstood subject. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Meg Remy and Ben Gibbard for chatting. This week's Talkhouse conversation features a pair of indie musicians—one of whom is known a bit better for another career—who recently collaborated on a song, and who have lots to say about creativity and the current state of the music biz: Hrishikesh Hirway and Melina Duterte, aka. Jay Som. If you recognize Hirway's name, chances are good it's from one of his popular podcasts: The best known is probably Song Exploder, on which Hirway and a guest break down a single song, spending time to get at its component parts and to explore the creative process. (Perhaps it goes without saying that it shares some DNA with the Talkhouse Podcast.) Guests over the years have included Bjork, Spoon, St. Vincent—the list goes on and on. Song Exploder became a Netflix series in 2020, with Hirway acting host on the TV version as well. In addition to that, he's behind some other great podcasts, including the fun pandemic-era food chat show Home Cooking, which he co-hosts with Samin Nusrat. With all of that on his plate, it's easy to overlook that Hirway spent many years making gentle, melancholy indie music under the name The One AM Radio. That part of his life took a backseat to his other pursuits, but music called him back, and he spent some time over the pandemic recording some songs that he's slowly releasing under his own name. The first was a collaboration with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and just this week came the second: a collaboration with today's other guest, Melina Duterte, who's better known by her project's name, Jay Som. The two met because Duterte was a guest on Song Exploder, where she spoke about her song “Tenderness.” Though he didn't actually host that episode, Hirway loved what he heard, and the two struck up a friendship that led to Duterte guesting on the touching song “Home.” If you like what you hear, the Jay Som catalog is thoroughly fantastic. Her last album under the name was 2019's Anak Ko, but she's spent time producing and collaborating with other folks over the past couple of years, including production duties for the latest album by Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt—a recent guest on this very podcast. Jay Som's music is often called “bedroom pop,” but after people hear this conversation, they may have to start calling it “attic pop,” since Duterte recently relocated to a private top floor of her own. Elsewhere in this conversation, she and Hirway talk about the hot mess that is the music industry, the software they sometimes use, and the alt-rock band that Duterte obsessed over as a pre-teen. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Hrisikesh Hirway and Melina Duterte for chatting. Check out their collaborative song, “Home,” and be sure to follow them both—and Talkhouse!—on your favorite social media channels. See you next time!

Due out February 18th, on Yoko Ono's 89th birthday, the Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono podcast will accompany the compilation tribute album of the same name. Imagined and curated by Benjamin Gibbard (lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of Death Cab for Cutie), the LP celebrates the extraordinary work of multimedia artist, singer, songwriter and activist Yoko Ono with new renditions of her songs by an array of brilliant artists including (in order of their voices in the trailer): David Byrne, Japanese Breakfast, The Flaming Lips, Thao, and Death Cab for Cutie, as well as Sharon Van Etten, Deerhoof, Yo La Tengo, Stephin Merritt (of Magnetic Fields), We Are KING, Amber Coffman, Jay Som, Sudan Archives and U.S. Girls. These new interpretations of her work accentuate Ono's powerful artistic impact, lasting cultural relevance, and utterly unique approach to songcraft. Hosted by Gibbard and journalist Jenny Eliscu, the Ocean Child podcast features interviews with contributors about their own meaningful connections to Ono's music and art, whether it's David Byrne describing the influence of Ono's book Grapefruit on his Broadway show American Utopia, or The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne describing what it's like to work with Ono, or Japanese Breakfast's Michelle Zauner examining how her own Asian identity affects her relationship with Ono's songs, or Gibbard remembering picking up a vinyl copy of Ono's Season of Glass at a record store years ago, and feeling stopped in his tracks by its beauty, from the very first listen. As he explains, “Her songwriting has been criminally overlooked. This is an artist whose output has run the gamut from avant-garde to bubblegum pop, often across a single album. She has consistently created melodies as memorable as those of the best pop writers. As a lyricist, she has always written with poignance, sophistication and deep introspection. It is my sincere hope that a new crop of Yoko Ono fans fall in love with her songwriting due in some small part to this album we have put together.” On Spotify, thanks to their awesome Music + Talk feature, the Ocean Child podcast will also feature renditions from the Ocean Child album, along with some of Ono's original versions. A portion of the album's proceeds will be donated to WhyHunger, a non-profit organization Ono has supported for decades in their efforts to transform our food system by building social justice and striking at the root causes of hunger and poverty. For this week's Talkhouse Podcast episode, we rounded up a pair of friends who deeply admire each other's playing and songwriting—and who ultimately met because of a different episode of the Talkhouse Podcast: Kurt Vile and Julia Shapiro. Kurt Vile first came into music fans' consciousness as part of The War On Drugs, though it wasn't long before he decided to dedicate his time to his solo material. He's released a string of incredible albums since, including 2013's instant classic Wakin' On A Pretty Daze and 2018's Bottle It In. As you'll hear in this conversation, he's been hard at work, writing "too many" songs for a new album. In 2017, Vile collaborated with Australian singer Courtney Barnett on an album called Lotta Sea Lice, and it was Barnett who turned him onto Julia Shapiro and her band Chastity Belt. When Barnett and Shapiro chatted on this very podcast back in 2017, that sealed the deal for Vile, who became a huge Chastity Belt fan—and eventual friend of Shapiro's. Now Chastity Belt, which started life about a decade ago in Washington State, has released four powerful albums over the years, most recently a self-titled set in 2019. But the occasion for this conversation is actually Shapiro's second album as a solo artist. It's called Zorked, a word that means kind of what you might think: extremely stoned, or maybe just completely out of it. That's how Shapiro felt after moving to Los Angeles at the beginning of the pandemic, where her social circle was smaller and the world kind of closed in on her. The result is a weird, incredible set of songs Shapiro co-produced with her roommate Melina Duterte—aka Jay Som. That might sound a little serious, but Julia and Kurt have a fun chat here, talking about how they met, how Kurt mistook Chastity Belt for another band at first, how Julia once crowdsurfed at one of Kurt's shows, and Julia's love of TikTok. She even tries to convince Kurt to sign up. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Kurt Vile and Julia Shapiro for chatting.
