Funerals have been taking place for victims of the latest mass shooting in the United States. Six people – including three children aged 9 – were killed in the attack at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee. Official data suggests guns are the leading cause of death for American children and teens - even more than car accidents. Researchers have recorded more than 130 mass shootings across the US so far this year. Their data suggests incidents have gone up significantly in recent years. The term “mass shooting” is generally understood to be incidents in which four or more people have been injured or killed. Meanwhile, the debate about gun violence in the US continues to be highly polarised. In this edition, we bring together those directly affected, who share the impact it has had on their lives. Abede Dasilva and Max Schachter discuss dealing with the aftermath of a shooting. Abede's brother Akilah was killed in 2018 at a Waffle House restaurant, also in Tennessee. Max's son, Alex, was one of 17 victims murdered in the Parkland School shooting in Florida in the same year. We also talk to Jennifer Hubbard, whose six-year-old daughter Catherine was murdered by a lone gunman at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Two mothers also tell us how they talk to their children about gun violence, and students in Tennessee send us messages about their protests against gun violence.

My guest today is the amazing Jennifer Hubbard, who is mom of two and the executive director of the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary and Foundation. Jenny founded the organization in memory of her late daughter Catherine who was a victim of the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. Despite the tragedy of her daughter's death, Jenny has been able to heal through her work on the sanctuary and the raising of her son, Fredrick, who is currently a high school senior. Under Jenny's leadership, CVH received a state conveyance of 34 acres of pristine farmland for the sanctuary's use, raised nearly $7 million in funding and garnered the attention and support of nationally recognized organizations including the ASPCA, Cornell University of Veterinary Medicine and the Jane Goodall Foundation. The sanctuary is also currently working on expanding the sanctuary's facilities to include a library, veterinary in-take facility and learning barn. You can find more information about current sanctuary projects here. She is a warrior mother and for anyone feeling scared to send their kids to school, I hope this episode will remind you how crucial it is to LIVE! Are you feeling stressed by the pandemic? You could try Sufi meditation to music. Sufism is a form of Islamic mysticism that emphasises introspection and spiritual connection but the meditation can work whether you are of other faiths, or none. When the pandemic began the Sufi music group Zendeh Delan decided to create Sufi-inspired music to aid meditation and broaden its appeal. The result is an album fusing Persian with western orchestral instruments and it is now being used in hospitals and clinics. We talk to musician Omid Asgari about what he calls "the music of the soul" and to clinical psychologist Dr Saloumeh Bozorgzadeh about how she uses it in her practice. As the United States mourns the victims of the shooting at Indianapolis, Emily talks to Jennifer Hubbard, mother of six year old Catherine, who was one of twenty children and six adult staff members who died in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012. It is one of the deadliest mass shootings in US history. Jennifer tells Emily how the tragedy threatened but then strengthened her faith as she put her energy into founding a sanctuary in her animal-mad daughters' name. And as the Church of England prepares to publish a much anticipated action plan to tackle racism this week we'll discuss what needs to be done now. It is not simply a matter of atoning for the past or removing old statues or symbols - this week too the BBC's Clive Myrie investigates contemporary allegations of discrimination in the Church for Panorama. The Archbishop of Canterbury has already backed plans for more black clergy and said the Church should rethink its depiction of Jesus as white. Will this be enough?
