During Lent, when life feels busy, noisy, and overwhelming, making room for the Lord is more important than ever. In this episode of Ave Explores: Lent with Sr. Josephine Garrett, CSFN, Oscar Rivera, host of Ave Spotlight, explores how Lent challenges us to embrace vulnerability and authenticity—not just with God, but with others. When we resist the temptation to close ourselves off and instead open our hearts, we create space for real spiritual growth. Tune in for an inspiring conversation on how Lent serves as a training ground for deeper faith and genuine connection. We would love it if you could leave a written review on Apple and share with your friends! Editing provided by Forte Catholic (https://www.fortecatholic.com/)
In this powerful episode, Sr. Josephine Garrett, CSFN, author of Wilderness Within, invites us to see Lent as more than a checklist of holy practices. Instead, it's a season to step into the wilderness of our hearts, where God is ready to work, heal, and lead us to deeper hope in him. Discover how reevaluating relationships, paying attention to God's movement in our lives, and embracing the unknown can transform your Lenten journey. Don't fear the wilderness—enter it with faith. A Word from Sr. Josephine: I am pleased also to share that we have been granted by the Holy Father the special grace of a Jubilee indulgence for the entire year (from the First Sunday of Advent, December 1, 2024 until November 30, 2025). This plenary indulgence is both for all our Sisters who will pray in the private chapels of our communities, as well as for all those who, during this period, will join us in devotional and liturgical celebrations, particularly in the chapels of our convents, as well as through the recitation of the Prayer to the Holy Family: O Holy Family, bless and protect all the families of the world. Safeguard their unity, fidelity, integrity and dignity. Enable them to live according to God's law that they may fulfill their sublime vocation. May their lives be a reflection of yours and may they enjoy your presence forever in heaven. Amen. We would love it if you could leave a written review on Apple and share with your friends! Fr. Mike Schmitz, Sr. Josephine Garret, and Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone engage us in discussing integrated personal formation at the National Eucharistic Congress. Fr. Mike highlights the importance of silence, which is "the great magnifier" that allows us to know ourselves and draw closer to God. In a homily, Archbishop Cordelione exhorts us to rediscover the silence that sensitizes us to the sacred. Finally, Sr. Josephine links human formation to pastoral formation and discusses how we, as Catholics, we should take what the secular sciences have to offer and claim it for our own. Sr. Josephine also defines proper integration as allowing God to work through all the places of our life. Join in to learn what these modern Catholic thought leaders share with us about human formation, along with some thoughts from Blaise Pascal and St. Augustine.

Roselle Reyes examines how work visas and green cards can be a stumbling block to the U.S.' reliance on foreign-born priests serving in parishes. "That's not really the point of this gathering. This is a moment of renewal for the Church…a time of prayer–not an event–but a sort of a happening, a spiritual happening on behalf of the Church in the United States." - Sister Josephine Garrett, CSFN In this episode, Tim and Sister Josephine Garrett discuss Sister Josephine's roundabout path to religious life and how she considers herself a spiritual daughter of St. John Paul II. They also discuss how not everyone is called to attend the National Eucharistic Congress. Those who are called to attend, though, will receive the graces they desperately need to receive.Sister Josephine suggests that when it comes to the 10th National Eucharistic Congress, we shouldn't be asking “Why?” Rather, like Mother Mary, we should be asking “How will this be?”This episode is full of laughs and the longest “rapid-fire” Q&A of all time. As we approach Ash Wednesday, the question on every faithful Christian's mind is, "What should I do to make this Lent an intentional time to grow closer to God?" In this episode, Sr. Josephine Garrett, CSFN, offers a new focus to this sacred season by encouraging us to examine the very fabric of our relationships—with ourselves, with others, and most importantly, with God. She provides practical advice on how intentional fasting, heartfelt prayer, and compassionate almsgiving can be tools to strengthen our most important connections. Through this, you will learn that going into Lent “blind” won't set you up for success, but going into Lent “examined” can lead you to a preview of Heaven. Black Catholics and Catholic Social Teaching, with Deacon James SummersWhy do so many Black Catholics leave the Church and why do so few new members enter the Church? This is the twofold question that Deacon James Summers along with his wife Wendy and others sought to understand when they were appointed to the Black Catholic Advisory Board for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. The answer redounds to his own experience as a Black Catholic in the Church, and to his approach to and appreciation for Catholic Social Teaching. Today Deacon James talks with me about the Lord's call to seek to understand, empathize with, and actively love one another. Just when you find your rhythm, something like school bullying enters the picture and it can often feel overwhelming and frustrating. Sr. Josephine Garrett, a licensed mental health school counselor talks strategies, perspective and encouragement in dealing with bullying. In this episode, we chat about: How and why did you pursue counseling? You serve both a school and have a private practice. What are the similarities and differences in serving those two populations? Some NICU babies have challenges that are easily detected once they leave the hospital, but sometimes parents find themselves encountering hard things as their babies become older and enter school. How do you, as a counselor and mental health professional, advocate for students differently than other school staff? What's an ideal student to counselor ratio? Often, a NICU baby becomes a target, if you will, for school bullies. Maybe they have a device, a physical challenge or their size makes them vulnerable. How can the family work with the school counselor to address that? What are some things you do with your students to help them process trauma, work through hard emotions or feel comfortable in who they are? When should a parent be concerned? What's your best advice to a parent who has a child struggling in school, academically, socially or emotionally? Sr. Josephine is a native Texan born and raised in Houston. She completed a BA in Politics with a Business concentration at the University of Dallas. Following graduation she began a 10-year career in banking, serving as Vice President in the Home Loans division of Bank of America. In 2011, she shifted her focus and began formation to be a Religious Sister with the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
