John also reflects on the significance of Holy Week, especially the Triduum liturgies, as a time to recognize God's work in our lives throughout Lent. A Word from Sr. Josephine: I am pleased also to share that we have been granted by the Holy Father the special grace of a Jubilee indulgence for the entire year (from the First Sunday of Advent, December 1, 2024 until November 30, 2025). This plenary indulgence is both for all our Sisters who will pray in the private chapels of our communities, as well as for all those who, during this period, will join us in devotional and liturgical celebrations, particularly in the chapels of our convents, as well as through the recitation of the Prayer to the Holy Family: O Holy Family, bless and protect all the families of the world. If we view Lent merely as a spiritual bootcamp to get ready for Easter, we will miss out on all the season has to offer. However, by approaching Lent with a broader perspective, we'll realize that these forty days can prepare us not only for the rest of our lives but also for the joys of heaven. When Ash Wednesday rolls around, many of us are ready—even excited—to start our Lenten resolution. However, as the weeks go by, our resolve can wane. What do we do when our Lenten practices become challenging to maintain? Fr. Agustino Torres, CFR, the author of Made for Heaven, offers us a way to enter this season as he explains why he felt called to write about going into the wilderness of Lent with a willing spirit and a ready heart. If we “fight” Lent, we close ourselves off to God's greater plan for these forty days. If we go into the desert remembering that Jesus went there first, we will see growth in our faithfulness. As we approach Ash Wednesday, the question on every faithful Christian's mind is, "What should I do to make this Lent an intentional time to grow closer to God?" In this episode, Sr. Josephine Garrett, CSFN, offers a new focus to this sacred season by encouraging us to examine the very fabric of our relationships—with ourselves, with others, and most importantly, with God. She provides practical advice on how intentional fasting, heartfelt prayer, and compassionate almsgiving can be tools to strengthen our most important connections. Through this, you will learn that going into Lent “blind” won't set you up for success, but going into Lent “examined” can lead you to a preview of Heaven. Black Catholics and Catholic Social Teaching, with Deacon James SummersWhy do so many Black Catholics leave the Church and why do so few new members enter the Church? This is the twofold question that Deacon James Summers along with his wife Wendy and others sought to understand when they were appointed to the Black Catholic Advisory Board for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. The answer redounds to his own experience as a Black Catholic in the Church, and to his approach to and appreciation for Catholic Social Teaching. Today Deacon James talks with me about the Lord's call to seek to understand, empathize with, and actively love one another. Follow-up Resources: “The Ark and the Dove, with Edward Herrera,” podcast episode via Church Life Today“The Embodied Holiness of Sr. Thea Bowman, with Kayla August,” podcast episode via Church Life Today“Black Live and the Preferential Option for the Poor,” by John Cavadini, essay at Church Life Journal"Hope Stories with Black Catholics with Sr. Josephine Garrett, CSFN" An OSV Original PodcastChurch Life Today is a partnership between the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame and OSV Podcasts from Our Sunday Visitor. I welcome back Sr Josephine Garrett, author of the book “Hope: An Invitation” by OSV Books. Sister Josephine shares her journey of faith, the challenges she faced, her experiences of prayer, and the moments of surrender she had to make in her life. By drawing upon her personal experience, she sheds light onto the power of hope, and how it serves as an 'anchor' guiding us through difficulties. We discuss the importance of deciding and committing, and the idea that hardships and darkness can be an invitation to a deeper relationship with God. We also share about the dangers of cynicism and warn against endless exploration of the past. We end the show by praying the Litany of Waiting. This episode is an exploration of faith, hope, love, and the role of waiting in one's spiritual journey. Have thoughts about this episode? Join the conversation on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn.
