Join our Patreon to get access to exclusive monthly Zoom calls: https://www.patreon.com/TheThinkingMuslimThis past week, the world has reflected on the death of former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. As Nixon's national security advisor, he was notorious for his ultra-realist approach to international politics, which saw the policy of triangulation with China and the Soviet Union that was pivotal in bringing China into the Western sphere and ultimately helping the emerging economy become a global power. But also the carpet bombing of Laos and Cambodia, in a failed attempt to solicit concessions from the North Vietnamese. Such unscrupulous foreign policy is again on display over Gaza. The silence with which the Western powers have embraced the slaughter and the tacit, if not open, approval of Israel's behaviour evokes a long-standing memory in the global south about a racist colonial logic. Today, we would like to explore this with our very own elder statesman', Dr Mahathir Mohamed. Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister for some 22 years. He has stewarded Malaysia through a difficult period; today it is a thriving economy. He came back to power briefly after winning a resounding victory in 2018. Dr Mahathir has seen first-hand in his 98 years the rise of America and the establishment of Israel, but also the sorry state of much of our ummah - and today, we would like to tap into his extensive knowledge and wisdom. You can also support The Thinking Muslim through a one-time donation: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/DonateSign up to Muhammad Jalal's newsletter: https://jalalayn.substack.comPurchase our Thinking Muslim mug: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/merch Find us on:Twitter: https://twitter.com/thinking_muslimFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Thinking-Muslim-Podcast-105790781361490Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkingmuslimpodcast/Telegram: https://t.me/thinkingmuslim Host: https://twitter.com/jalalaynWebsite Archive: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com Hosted on Acast. Mahathir Mohamad served as prime minister of Malaysia between 1981 and 2003, and again between 2018 and 2020. Today's episode in part examines the implications of being governed by the very old; Mahathir was 93 when he returned to power in 2018. Ethnic tensions are intrinsic to Malaysian history and politics. A mix between Malays, Chinese and Indians, the majority Malay population, reeling after years of partly real and partly perceived suppression by the other groups, rallied around Mahathir, who promised to construct a country run by and for Malays. This had mixed results, but few can dispute Mahathir didn't give it a good go; he served as prime minister for twenty-two years, staying in power by locking in the Malay vote for five elections in a row. My guest today is James Chin, professor of Asian Studies at the University of Tasmania. James has written extensively on Malaysian politics, and his outlook for Malaysia's future is mixed; whilst he is encouraged by the increasing pluralism at the top of Malaysian politics since 2018, he is also concerned by the pervasive influence of Islamism. We discuss these issues, as well as the implications of having a country so defined by ethnic division.

Kelumun Racun Negara Serumpun Oleh. Deena Noor (Tim Kontributor Tetap NarasiPost.Com) Voice over talent: Dewi Nasjag NarasiPost. "In the fight against bigotry, we stand together, and we must. In the fight against injustice, we stand together, and we must. In the fight against intimidation, we stand together, and we must. After all, a government that launches wars to steal another person's birthright will do anything to all of us." Cynthia McKinney has made a career of speaking her mind and challenging authority. She began on day one of her political life and hasn't looked back. With her opinions, actions, and even her sense of style, McKinney has inspired both admiration and controversy. During her second term, her district was re-drawn and re-numbered the 4th district. McKinney protested the new boundaries, but was still reelected to the seat. She was a supporter of a Palestinian State in Israel-occupied territory, and sparked controversy by criticizing American policy in the Middle East. After 9/11, McKinney suggested the President had received warnings. The criticism she received as a result, combined with being targeted by the pro-Israel lobby, contributed to her defeat in the 2002 election; however, she ran for the seat again and was re-elected in 2004. McKinney was a vocal critic of the government's response to Hurricane Katrina. When Nancy Pelosi encouraged a boycott of a Select Bipartisan Committee to Investigate Hurricane Katrina, Cynthia chose instead to participate and submitted her own report to the Congressional Record. She continued her criticism of the Bush administration's handling of the matter and its failure to secure a way back home for Katrina survivors. Cynthia pressed for government transparency and accountability and introduced legislation to release the documents related to the murders of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Tupac Shakur. She was the first Member of Congress to file articles of impeachment against George Bush and she voted against every war funding bill put before her. Cynthia was forced out of Congress once more in 2007 when she was targeted for defeat, again, by donations from pro-Israel contributors that flooded into her opponent's campaign coffers. Cynthia McKinney has never been afraid to speak her mind, and stand up for what she believes in. Late in 2007, she left the Democratic Party to take her energy and ideas to the whole country by becoming a Green Party Presidential Candidate. Cynthia won the Green Party nomination for U.S. President and in 2008 ran for President. In December 2008, Cynthia made international headlines when the Free Gaza boat she was aboard was rammed by the Israeli military as she was attempting to deliver medical supplies to the people of Gaza during Israel's Operation Cast Lead. Cynthia and her fellow humanitarian activists, rescued by Lebanon, never made it to Gaza. In 2009, Cynthia attempted to reach Gaza again, this time armed with crayons, coloring books, and school supplies for the children. She and her fellow human rights workers became the Free Gaza 21 after their boat was overtaken in international waters by the Israeli military and they were kidnapped to Israel. Cynthia spent seven days in an Israeli prison. And again, Cynthia did not make it into Gaza. Finally, Cynthia entered Gaza by land in July 2009 with George Galloway's 250-volunteer-strong Viva Palestina, USA. And as a rider and a member of the support team, Cynthia recently completed a cross-country bicycle ride with five other Bike4Peace 2010 cyclists who started in California and ended in Washington, D.C., speaking to the American people about the possibility of more peaceful U.S. policies if enough of us are willing to participate in our own positive, personal transformations. Cynthia had not been on a bicycle in twenty years and faced many personal obstacles along the way. However, she met this challenge with her usual good humor and determination and by the last day of the ride was able to complete over 60 miles on her bicycle. In August 2011, Cynthia completed a very successful 21-city peace tour in the United States, educating urban communities in order to promote a more peaceful U.S. foreign policy. In 2009, Cynthia conceived of DIGNITY as an international activist peace organization to assert respect for human rights by taking direct action for peace. It was under this banner that Cynthia took three DIGNITY delegations to Libya, including one delegation of journalists during the U.S./NATO/Israel aggression against the Arab Jamahiriya state. Since 2005, Cynthia became a supporter and follower of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad's efforts to “criminalize war.” She has appeared in Kuala Lumpur several times, declaring that city the Peace Capital of the World. She recently reported on her experience in Libya in the “Arab Uprising” Conference organized by the Perdana Global Peace Foundation and served as an official observer at the historic Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal that, on 22 November

Ikuti Kenyataan Khas berkaitan COVID-19 Oleh Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
We’ve heard numerous accounts of the infamous Langkah Sheraton that spelled the end of the former Pakatan Harapan government. Some have called it a dark day for Malaysian democracy, while others saw it as inevitable - and a solution to the growing divide between former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and his successor, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. But how do youth leaders from both sides of the political divide look back on that day? What role did they play, especially if they had no legislative say? To answer these questions and more, we speak with Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, UMNO Youth Chief, and YB Howard Lee, Perak Assemblyperson for Pasir Pinji and DAP Youth Chief. Image Source: Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki Facebook, howardlee.my
Nearly a year after Langkah Sheraton, former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad remains a relevant part of our country’s political fabric. For Pakatan Harapan, the neverending question of working with the political giant continues to be a main sticking point in a united opposition. Another Charlie Hebdo cartoon. Another violent response. Where and when does this end, one wonders? @chedetofficial chose to keep it real and called a spade a spade in this controversial thread. He asserted that a fruitful reconciliation will only begin when countries, organisations, or individuals learn to not impose their value systems on others. Link to original thread: 1.
Over the weekend, there was a mixed response to Dr Mahathir Mohamad's endorsement of Parti Warisan Sabah president Shafie Apdal as the Pakatan Harapan Plus candidate for PM. Some have welcomed the proposal, saying it will focus much-needed attention on East Malaysia. Critics point out that Warisan commands only 9 seats in Parliament, and the move is simply to thwart Anwar Ibrahim from becoming PM. Melisa Idris and Sharaad Kuttan speak to Vilashini Somiah, Gender Studies programme at Universiti Malaya.
Glenn van Zutphen and award-winning author Neil Humphreys speak to Nile Bowie, Correspondent, Asia Times about his exclusive hour+ interview with former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and how the 95-year-old leader might have one more political comeback after claiming that the multi-racial opposition parties will threaten a return to corrupt and authoritarian misrule. He speaks openly about Anwar Ibrahim, the US-China Trade War, and the outcome he wants for Singapore's GE2020.
The weekend's political drama saw Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia announce that former Prime Minister and founder, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, has lost his party membership alongside four other lawmakers. The purported reason for the sacking was because they chose to sit among the Opposition during the May 18th parliamentary sitting. Tun Mahathir has since come out to challenge the move, and we speak to his legal counsel Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, about whether he believes the termination has any legal standing.

Malaysia, without considering the damages of the COVID-19, is coming out of a political turmoil. Mahathir Mohamad has been the long-living kingmaker of Malaysian politics and, after his resignation, Mr Muhyiddin Yassin took his place. However, as I have discussed with Emmanuel, I observe Malaysia from outside and it seems to me it is a declining country surrounded by more dynamic and flexible nations. According to Emmanuel, Malaysia has the potential to blossom again, because it has still good economic infrastructure. However, the demographic dividend is not helping the country. Its salaries remain low, due to the large immigration from low-income Muslim countries. The risk for Malaysia is to remain forever in the low-income trap.
Days after the 94-year-old was replaced as Malaysia's prime minister, we revisit a conversation he had in 2018 with Kevin Rudd at Asia Society New York.

On Oct 31, Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, announced that it will proceed with a cross-border MRT link project with Singapore, with proposals to amend the project and reduce costs by 36 percent. Joining us to discuss this is political correspondent at ‘The Straits Times’, Adrian Lim.
One year after the corruption-tainted government of Najib Razak was ousted in a stunning electoral upset, sentiment in Malaysia has turned from elation to frustration. The motley coalition led by Mahathir Mohamad, the 93-year-old former and now new prime minister, has been weighed down by in-fighting. There are growing fears that he is backsliding on promises to roll back draconian laws and reinvigorate the sluggish economy. Is Mahathir really a changed man? Will his government be subsumed by internal battles? And how will he manage growing US–China rivalry and simmering tensions with neighbouring Singapore? Two leading experts on Malaysian politics, Professor James Chin and Dr Vilashini Somiah, and the Director of the Lowy Institute’s Southeast Asia Project, Ben Bland, discussed these pressing questions and more. Professor James Chin is Director of the Asia Institute at the University of Tasmania. He is a leading commentator on Malaysian politics and has published extensively on Malaysia and the surrounding region. He is the author of a recent Lowy Institute paper, New Malaysia: Four Key Challenges in the Near Term. He has written and edited several books on Southeast Asian politics including Malaysia Post-Mahathir: A Decade of Change?. Dr Vilashini Somiah is the Head of Research at Iman, a think-tank in Kuala Lumpur that focuses on community engagement. It is known for its research on preventing violent extremism, socio-religious trends and public perceptions. Vila has a PhD in Southeast Asian Studies from the National University of Singapore. Her academic work focused on irregular cross-border migrants on the island of Borneo and their struggle against state power. This event was part of the ASEAN–Australia Visiting Fellows Program at the Lowy Institute, which is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia–ASEAN Council of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
In this episode of the Keiser Report, Max and Stacy discuss the Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad calling for a gold backed currency as a unit of account for trade between East Asian nations. They discuss whether or not interest rates will go to zero in the US as billionaire investor Stan Druckenmiller believes and what happens, in that case, to Europe where over $10 trillion worth of bonds have a negative yield.
Last month, Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad made a call to utilise coal in Sabah to address Malaysia’s energy needs, and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal followed up by saying that the state will carry out a feasibility study. With her opinions, actions, and even her sense of style, McKinney has inspired both admiration and controversy.During her second term, her district was re-drawn and re-numbered the 4th district. She recently reported on her experience in Libya in the “Arab Uprising” Conference organized by the Perdana Global Peace Foundation and served as an official observer at the historic Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal that, on 22 November 2011, found former President George W. Bush and former Prime Minister Tony Blair guilty of the crime of aggression and other crimes against the state and people of Iraq. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement
