Adversity is something we all face at some point in our lives. How we respond to that adversity can crush our spirit or give us hope for a better tomorrow. This week, author, writer, and humorist Jon Patrick Hatcher joins us to discuss how different genders handle adverse events, how to cultivate a perspective of hope when all seems lost, the benefits of connection and having a support system, and how he turned adversity in his own life into a survival manual for others who need a guiding light toward hope. As Lauren and Jon unpack the science of anxiety, Jon touches on how perspective and connection shape how we respond to an adverse event. He believes that while everyone will face adversity, we all have the capacity to respond in a way that shifts our perspective from fear and anxiety to one of hope and balance. “I think perspective is a beautiful thing. Having perspective - we don't all get it. But when you have it, you've got to cherish that and say, “look, I've got this, and I've seen the other side. I know how things can get. I've got to live completely differently.” Everyone has the capacity to shift from hopelessness to hope; you just need the right guiding light. “Life's unfair for all of us, which is what makes it fair for any of us.” In this episode: (01:40) - Jon discusses how his book is different from other textbooks on anxiety (03:47) - Women vs. men: dealing with adverse events (05:41) - How humor can blast through anxiety and shift your perspective toward hope (06:40) - Jon's journey from broken-hearted to humorous anxiety guru (10:27) - What are some tools we can use to deal with anxiety at the moment? (21:45) - Things that can trigger anxiety and quick tips for dealing with triggers (24:37) - Anxiety, isolation, and the struggles of staying connected in today's world (30:24) - Jon talks about his hardest challenge and how he got through it (36:40) - Find your “why” because people need your contribution (39:08) - Jon's message of hope Guest Author, writer, and humorist Jon Patrick Hatcher has helped hundreds of people all over the world by sharing his knowledge and research about anxiety and the different strategies we can incorporate to handle the adverse events that trigger anxiety as they arise. As the author of several books, including “101 Ways To Conquer Teen Anxiety” and “Anxiety Hacks For An Uncertain World,” he meticulously intertwines his own experiences dealing with anxiety from adverse events as a result of cancer, heartache, and uncertainty using light humor while still providing evidence-based and actionable tips for understanding and overcoming anxiety in it's many forms.
