I also connect nicotine to addiction science, menopause and HRV, and the deeper emotional reasons people reach for a chemical pause button.  Beware of those posts from wellness "influencers" telling you to use their discount code for the miracle nicotine gum "nootropic" for your brain...you need all the facts before you decide if it's right for you.• 90s nostalgia and media trends that glamorize smoking again  • the hard science on cigarette combustion, toxins, and long-term risk  • what 2026 studies suggest about vaping and cardiovascular harm  • where the vaping and cancer evidence is early, mixed, and still concerning  • nicotine pouches as “clean” marketing versus heart and oral health realities  • why nicotine can feel like focus while strengthening dependence  • quit-rate data and why repeated attempts are normal, not weakness  • menopause, estrogen, HRV, and nicotine as a fight-or-flight drug  • the “thing under the thing” and what we are trying not to feel - you know I will always bring a little bit of soul into every podcast episode.I am one of the rare independent podcasts left...please do your part to help support me to keep going 6+ years and I know how much my integrity has helped the wellness space.  Share this with a friend so that they can get the details on what we know right now. Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 7-09-2026: Researchers refined a technique to reverse skin cell aging by about 30 years while preserving cellular identity. Exposing adult fibroblasts to Yamanaka factors—stopping before full reversion to pluripotent stem cells, reset the epigenetic clock and gene expression patterns to resemble much younger cells. The rejuvenated fibroblasts produced significantly more collagen, migrated faster to close artificial wounds, and showed reversal of gene expression patterns associated with Alzheimer's and cataracts. Since long-term epidemiologic data doesn't yet exist, Dr. Dawn follows up on last week's vaping question by exploring cancer mechanisms. Vaping aerosols impair DNA repair fidelity while triggering IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-alpha secretion. Nicotine-derived nitrosamines, reactive carbonyls (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein) are generated when propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin are heated. Upregulated cytochrome P450 enzymes convert precarcinogens like benzopyrene into carcinogens. Mice exposed for 54 weeks developed lung adenocarcinomas in 22% and precancerous bladder hyperplasia in 57%, with markers matching those show predict lung cancer years before diagnosis. The Mexican Biobank—which includes over 40,000 samples from all 31 Mexican states revealed dramatic regional variation in drug-metabolism genes driven by Indigenous ancestry. In Chiapas, nearly 40% of the population carries two copies of a CYP2D6 variant reducing fentanyl metabolism, versus just 10% in Sinaloa. The SLCO1B1 variant hindering statin metabolism is found in over 15% of Yucatán residents., where 8 million Mexicans take statins. Dr. Dawn discusses both the promise and potential dark side of population genetic testing, including UK plans to genotype all children at birth for inborn errors of metabolism. Dr. Dawn briefly revisits the recent Indian study showing conch-shell blowing reduces sleep apnea by 34%, comparing it to earlier didgeridoo research, both of which strengthen airway muscles through forced-blowing exercises. A caller from Capitola recovering from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma near the L5 nerve asks about Japanese Kampo medicine formulas (Goshajinkigan, Yokukansan) for post-treatment nerve pain. Dr. Dawn suggests the pain likely originates from scar tissue tethering the nerve, and recommends consulting the Oriental Medicine Doctor program at Five Branches in Santa Cruz where faculty can advise on herbal formulas that trace back thousands of years through cultural exchange between China and Japan. Dr. Dawn explains Lp(a):lipoprotein(a), a small protein string attached to LDL particles that promotes clumping and clotting, is a genetically-determined coronary artery disease and stroke risk factor invisible to standard lipid panels. Levels of 250 particles double coronary risk and 350 particles triple it. Less than 75 is normal. Two new pharmaceutical strategies are in development to reduce Lp(a) : antisense oligonucleotides (single-stranded RNA that recruits RNase H to cleave target mRNA) and small interfering RNA (double-stranded RNA that triggers destruction of matching mRNA). Pelacarsen, a monthly injection in Phase 3 trials, reduces Lp(a) by 80%. These gene-silencing platforms open therapeutic possibilities for previously undruggable orphan diseases. Vitamin K2 is produced in the gut microbiome. MK-4 is most common in humans. Dr. Dawn recommends MK7 for stabilizing coronary calcium plaques and directing calcium into bone. A study of hepatitis B and C patients found MK4 to be protective in hepatocellular carcinoma. HCC developed in 2 of 21 MK-4-treated patients versus 9 of 19 controls, with a risk ratio of 0.2. MK-4 activates protein kinase A in vitro, inhibits HCC invasiveness, and restores apoptosis signaling that cancer cells normally block. Dr. Dawn recommends a couple milligrams of MK-4 daily for anyone with cirrhosis or prior hepatitis B or C infection.

Episode TitleOriginal Air Date: 07/08/26 Episode Number: 467Episode SummaryA full episode this week. Dan picks up the smoke smell series with fabric, carpet, upholstery, and the full cigarette smoke remediation process -- including the right primer and why it's step four, not step one. Then a long segment on painting in summer heat: surface temps vs. air temps, when to start, when to quit, how to chase the cool shade, bees on ladders, and the best products for the job. He closes with a cement truck taking out his power line, his electrician son saving the day, and a case for encouraging the next generation toward the trades. In This Episode[00:00] -- Show Intro and Teaser[01:16] -- Microwave Fire Story[04:27] -- Wash Smoke Out of Fabrics[06:22] -- Carpet and Upholstery Deodorizing[09:47] -- Cigarette Smoke Reality Check[11:15] -- Deep Clean and Remove Odors[15:00] -- Prime and Repaint Correctly[18:53] -- Heat Weather Painting Setup[19:28] -- Heat Lovers and Painting Risks[21:13] -- Heat Painting Is Fine[21:39] -- Air vs. Surface Temp[23:10] -- Hot Surface Failures[24:01] -- Start Early, Plan Your Walls[25:13] -- Chase the Cool Shade[26:34] -- Infrared Thermometer Hack[27:35] -- Quit Before the Dew[28:16] -- Heat Safety and Breaks[29:11] -- Bees and Ladder Panic[32:47] -- Treat Your Crew Right[33:46] -- Best Paint for Heat[35:27] -- Power Pole Chaos Story[37:32] -- Why Trades Matter[39:41] -- Wrap Up and EventsMicrowave Fire Story [01:16]Dan circles back to the microwave fire story from a couple weeks ago. His daughter put a cherry pit heating bag -- the kind you warm up in the microwave, no cords, homemade, probably acquired at a flea market in Shipshewana -- in for 20 minutes instead of two. Flames ensued. He hauled the microwave outside in his underwear at bedtime. Kids still love that story. He covered getting the smell off hard surfaces in episode 465 (find it at repcolite.com). Today he's picking up what he didn't have time for then: getting smoke smell out of fabrics.Wash Smoke Out of Fabrics [04:27]Fabrics act like odor sponges. After any kind of kitchen fire or smoke event, the first step is getting everything washable off the walls and into the machine -- curtains, slipcovers, throw blankets, pillows, towels, rugs if possible. No special detergent required. Start with regular laundry detergent and the warmest water the fabric can handle. Don't cram everything into one load -- the fabric needs room to move so the soap and water can actually pull the smoke residue out.The important rule before the dryer: do the sniff test. If it still smells smoky, wash it again. Don't dry it yet. Dryer heat can lock odors in and make them significantly harder to remove. Once it smells clean, then dry it.Carpet and Upholstery Deodorizing [06:22]For things that can't go in the washing machine, start by vacuuming thoroughly. Smoke leaves behind particles and residue that are physically sitting in the fibers. Vacuuming first gives you a better starting point before adding anything wet. From there, baking soda -- plain, unscented -- can help absorb and reduce odors. Sprinkle it on, let it sit overnight, then vacuum it up completely. Dan is cautious about the heavily scented carpet deodorizers because they can mask the problem rather than solve it.For tougher situations, OdoBan (O-D-O-B-A-N) markets products specifically for smoke odors that can be misted onto carpet and upholstery. It neutralizes rather than masks. Follow the label carefully, test a hidden spot first, and don't soak anything. If the smoke smell is light, baking soda or a fabric-safe neutralizer may be enough. If it's strong, actual carpet or upholstery cleaning may be necessary. And if the odor has gotten into the carpet pad or foam backing, surface treatments may only mask things temporarily -- in those cases, replacement may be the only real fix.Cigarette Smoke Reality Check [09:47]Cigarette smoke is the same problem as kitchen smoke, just dramatically worse. Instead of one event, you're dealing with months or years of buildup. Nicotine and tar accumulate on walls, ceilings, in carpet, drapes, cabinets, ductwork, insulation, and unfinished wood. It yellows paint. It gets into everything. It's a big job, and it has to be treated like one.Deep Clean and Remove Odors [11:15]Step 1: Remove what you can. Old curtains, old carpet, old blinds -- anything soft that's holding the odor. If it's reasonable to just pull it out and start fresh, that's usually the easier path. Don't try to rescue things that aren't worth the effort.Step 2: Wash everything down. Everything. Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, cabinets, closets, inside drawers, light fixtures, fan blades, switch plates, outlet covers. Anywhere smoke residue could have settled over years. The choice of cleaner depends on the goal. If you're trying to preserve the existing paint and avoid repainting, start mild -- warm water with Dawn dish soap, gentle enough not to damage the finish. Don't scrub aggressively. Don't soak the walls. Test anything stronger in a hidden spot first. If the odor is coming back after a mild wash, or if you've already decided to repaint, then you're not trying to save the old paint anymore. At that point, a degreaser or TSP substitute can come in. Still: follow the label, protect nearby surfaces, rinse thoroughly, and let everything dry completely before priming. Cleaner residue can cause problems just like smoke residue.Step 3: Replace HVAC filters. If the smell is heavy, it may be worth calling a duct cleaning company and asking specifically about their process for smoke-affected systems. Some use deodorizers or neutralizers after cleaning -- worth asking about before assuming they're not needed.Prime and Repaint Correctly [15:00]This is where most people go wrong. After cleaning, they roll on new paint and it looks and smells fine -- for a week. Then the stain and odor start coming back through. For cigarette smoke and nicotine, you need a true stain-blocking or odor-blocking primer after cleaning and before painting. A shellac-based primer like BIN is a reliable choice. RepcoLite Zip Prime is an oil-based option that will block smoke stains and water stains effectively. It cleans up with mineral spirits, but it gets the job done. It's on sale this month at RepcoLite and is available in spray cans -- which makes it a handy fix if you've got a few water damage spots on a ceiling you want to seal without breaking out brushes and rollers.Dan's caution on water-based stain blockers: they can work in some situations, but with heavy cigarette smoke and persistent odor, don't cut corners. Ventilate well and use the shellac or oil-based products that are built for this kind of problem. The full sequence for cigarette smoke:Remove what's holding the odorVentilate and filter the airWash and rinse all surfacesPrime with the right productPaintPrimer is step four, not step one. A lot of people skip straight to it and wonder why the smell keeps coming back. When to call a professional: if there was an actual fire (not just a small appliance incident), if there's visible soot beyond one small area, or if smoke got deep into the HVAC system, a restoration company may be the right call rather than DIY.Heat Painting Is Fine -- With the Right Approach [21:13]People ask constantly whether they can paint outside in summer heat. The answer is yes -- with conditions. The problems come from working like it's a 75-degree day in May when it's not.Air vs. Surface Temp [21:39]The most common mistake in hot-weather painting: looking at the weather app, seeing 88 degrees, checking the paint can and seeing a range up to 100 degrees, and assuming everything is fine. The number on the app is air temperature. Paint doesn't care about just air temperature -- it cares about the surface it's going onto. A wall or siding that's been baking in direct sun can run 15 to 20 degrees hotter than the surrounding air. The app says 88, the south wall could easily be 105 or 110. That's the number that matters.Hot Surface Failures [23:10]Paint applied to an overheated surface dries almost the instant it touches. That sounds fast and convenient. It's not. You can't blend edges before they set, so you get lap marks -- visible streaks where one pass overlaps the next. The paint can bubble or blister. And the bigger problem: it doesn't get the chance to bond properly to the surface. A job that looks fine in July can start letting go within a year or two, or faster, because the adhesion was compromised from the start.Start Early, Plan Your Walls [24:01]In extreme heat, start early -- but not before the dew has burned off. A damp surface is a problem too. The rule: start early, but only after the surface is fully dry.Once you start, be strategic. If one side of the house is going to get hit by sun first, and it's still cool, that may be the place to begin --...

Ep 279 Why is Rick Rubin Selling Athletic Nicotine? Kitty wants to know. Why is nicotine suddenly being marketed as a wellness product? In this episode, Kitty O'Compost turns her satirical eye toward the rise of “athletic nicotine,” a new generation of premium nicotine pouches aimed at runners, creatives, executives, and health-conscious high performers. Using Rick Rubin's podcast sponsorship as a starting point, Kitty explores how a highly addictive substance is being wrapped in the language of mindfulness, optimization, and intentional living. With humor, skepticism, and a trip through the False Consensus Detector, Kitty examines the growing effort to separate nicotine from its tobacco past and position it alongside coffee, supplements, and other performance tools. Along the way, she asks whether beautiful branding can obscure biological reality and whether a wellness halo can transform public perception without changing the underlying molecule. Avis closes the episode with a personal reflection on his admiration for Rick Rubin's work and his repeated requests that Rubin reconsider promoting athletic nicotine to his audience. Article Cardiovascular Risks:The American Heart Association (AHA) Policy Statement, "Impact of Smokeless Oral Nicotine Products on Cardiovascular Disease: Implications for Policy, Prevention, and Treatment" (Published in Circulation). This study tracks the adverse effects of oral pouches on cardiovascular biomarkers and the specific dangers of synthetic nicotine. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39624904/ Excerpt: “Abstract. Smokeless oral nicotine products are addictive, and their use has potential adverse effects on some but not all biomarkers of cardiovascular risk. The use of some types of these products, for instance, is associated with an increased mortality risk in those with ischemic heart or cerebrovascular disease. Similarly, smokeless tobacco has the potential to increase the risk of oral cancer, but the risks depend on the chemical composition of the product. The market of smokeless oral nicotine products has transformed since the last American Heart Association smokeless tobacco policy statement. Several varieties of tobacco-free oral nicotine products-including oral nicotine pouches; nontherapeutic nicotine gums, lozenges, and tablets; and nicotine gummies-have rapidly proliferated. The sales of oral nicotine pouches, in particular, have increased substantially; however, no data are available on their cardiovascular or health risks. In addition, synthetic (compared with tobacco-derived) nicotine has been used in some brands of oral nicotine products, but its cardiovascular and health effects have been inadequately studied. Robust public policy levers are identified to support ending addiction to all commercial tobacco products. Critical components and policy initiatives include clinicians emphasizing the prevention of tobacco product initiation and supporting cessation with established pharmacological and behavioral tobacco dependence treatment therapies as primary goals for achieving an end to commercial tobacco and nicotine addiction.” Public Health Data:The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Fact Sheet on Oral Nicotine Pouches, highlighting rapid dependency loops, systemic toxicity, and the acceleration of youth addiction through modern marketing. Excerpts: “There are no safe tobacco products, including nicotine pouches. This is especially true for youth, young adults, and women who are pregnant.” “More research is needed to better understand the short- and long-term health effects of using nicotine pouches.” Join the Community / Get the Books:AvisKalfsbeek.com

Joseph Pandolfino, Founder and CEO of Cabbacis, is focused on reducing harm caused by smoking cigarettes by developing cigarettes made from a blend of low-nicotine tobacco and hemp.  This approach is intended to help smokers reduce their nicotine dependence and increase the success rate of those who are looking to quit smoking. Their products are targeted to established smokers by providing the taste and sensory experience of a traditional cigarette while providing significantly less nicotine and a path to less harmful non-combustible products. Joseph explains, "So our products in development are called iBlend. We'll stick with the cigarette right now. So iBlend is predominantly very low-nicotine tobacco, and you add hemp to the product. Hemp became legal at the federal level in 2018 for farmers. So every iBlend is the merger of very low-nicotine tobacco and hemp, which really creates the taste and sensory characteristics of a cigarette that just has very little nicotine tobacco."   "As I mentioned, currently nicotine is reduced by about 95%. They give you a little bit of nicotine but not enough to really sustain addiction. So the result is that people smoke less cigarettes and it has greatly increased their quit attempts. And while they reduce their nicotine exposure and dependence, if they choose to switch to a non-combustible, we consider that a win as far as we're concerned." #Cabbacis $CABI #EmpoweredPatient #HarmReduction #TobaccoHarmReduction #SmokingCessation #QuitSmoking #iBlend #FDA #PublicHealth #TobaccoControl #PublicHealth #Healthcare cabbacis.com Listen to the podcast here

Zyn pouches, vapes, nicotine patches — people who would never touch a cigarette are using them daily and calling it biohacking. And the focus hit is real. But here's what nobody is stopping to ask: why is it working? And what does it mean that you need it to feel that way? In this episode, we break down what nicotine is actually doing in your brain, why it stops working the longer you use it, and what your body is really signaling when nicotine gives you that hit of clarity. We get into acetylcholine — one of the most important and undertalked neurotransmitters in your nervous system — what depletes it, why so many people are running low without knowing it, and what rebuilding it actually looks like through food and foundational support. This one is for anyone who relies on nicotine, caffeine, or any stimulant to feel sharp, focused, or like themselves. The signal your body is sending is worth understanding. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: April 15, 2024This episode of Weird Darkness travels from a haunted stretch of English road and a tower built on dead workers to a teenager found frozen in a hotel kitchen, a century of phantom lights in the Australian Outback, and an 18th-century medical practice involving tobacco and a part of the body it had no business near.It opens on Dawstone Road in Heswall, where a Neston motorist crashed through a six-foot sandstone wall in the winter of 1961 and later told a surgeon at Clatterbridge Hospital that a horrible devil had pushed his car sideways, despite no alcohol in his blood. That March, a 23-year-old Wallasey man named Rory was thrown from his motorbike at the Baskervyle Road junction by a seven-foot horned figure that seized his handlebars, and he woke to a face with pointed ears and luminous eyes muttering about the pit. The road's reputation reaches back to November 1934, when a posse hunted a demonic creature that a wealthy mansion owner blamed on his escaped bulldog, an explanation a local policeman rejected by asking how a broad bulldog squeezed through iron gate bars. The pattern continued through a stalled Hillman Imp shoved backwards in 1969 and a nurse's 1978 sighting of a horned man in black standing beside a ten-foot hole that glowed red and echoed with screaming. From there the episode moves to the Manila Film Center, the cinema palace Imelda Marcos rushed to completion for the first Manila International Film Festival in January 1982, where part of the structure collapsed on November 17, 1981 and buried workers in wet cement during a 24-hour construction schedule. Eyewitness Nena Benigno described seeing men carried out frozen in cement that had not fully hardened, while official counts from the Marcos regime claimed only a handful of deaths against outside estimates ranging as high as 169. Architect Froilan Hong put the toll at seven and denied the burial stories, yet legends persisted that the dead were entombed in the walls, and a medium reportedly brought in by Imelda Marcos to exorcise the building announced during a trance that the spirits now numbered 169 after the road death of project supervisor Betty Benitez.Next comes the death of 19-year-old Kenneka Jenkins, found face-down in a walk-in freezer at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O'Hare in Rosemont on the morning of September 11, 2017, nearly a full day after security footage caught her stumbling through the hotel and entering an unused kitchen. The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled the death an accident from hypothermia, with a blood-alcohol level of 0.112 and epilepsy medication cited as contributing factors, but her mother Teresa Martin questioned how a teenager could open the freezer's heavy steel doors and filed a $50 million lawsuit against the hotel. Viral speculation drew comparisons to the 2013 death of Elisa Lam at the Cecil Hotel, fueled by footage in which background music was mistaken for a cry of help and an anonymous tip claiming a gang had killed her for $200.The episode then crosses to the Outback near Boulia in Queensland, where Min Min lights have trailed travelers since Europeans first documented them in 1838, hovering about three feet off the ground, changing color, and following people on foot, on horseback, and in cars. A stockman riding past the burned ruins of the Min Min Hotel reported a glow the size of a watermelon that chased him to the edge of town, and Arrernte elder Mavis Malbunka tied the lights to a Dreamtime story of a mother searching for a child fallen from the Milky Way. University of Queensland physiologist Jack Pettigrew traced the phenomenon to a Fata Morgana, an optical illusion in which warm air over cold bends light from sources hundreds of kilometers beyond the horizon, a finding he published in 2003 after recreating the effect with car headlights ten kilometers away. The episode closes on the tobacco enema, the 18th-century practice of blowing smoke into a patient's rectum to revive the drowned, with resuscitation kits hung near English waterways for emergency use. Nicholas Culpeper adapted the method from Native American medicine and Richard Mead carried it forward, and an early 1746 account credits a husband with reviving his apparently drowned wife by inserting a pipe stem and puffing smoke through it. Nicotine absorbed this way could raise a patient's heart rate, which gave the treatment a plausible mechanism, and the 1774 Institution for Affording Immediate Relief to Persons Apparently Dead from Drowning built its work around it before being renamed the Royal Humane Society, which still operates in England today.

How to Reverse Cognitive Decline, Grow Your Hippocampus, and Protect Your Brain from Alzheimer's Disease with Nutrition, Exercise, Sleep, and Stress Reduction Your brain is physically shrinking right now, and most people have no idea it's happening. In this episode, you will discover the exact mechanisms behind cognitive decline, why brain fog is always treatable, and the proven strategies to grow your brain back, protect your memory, and slash your Alzheimer's risk regardless of your genetics. -Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Majid Fotuhi, a neuroscientist and neurologist who earned his PhD from Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at the Mind/Brain Institute at Johns Hopkins while also teaching at George Washington University and Harvard Medical School. With 37 years of experience in clinical practice, teaching, and neuroscience research, Dr. Fotuhi pioneered the Brain Fitness Program, a multidisciplinary approach to cognitive performance and brain vitality at any age that has produced measurable results documented in peer-reviewed journals. He is the author of three books including the bestselling The Invincible Brain and one of the world's leading experts on neuroplasticity, hippocampus growth, and successful aging. If anyone has earned the right to tell you your brain can get better, it is him. Dr. Fotuhi and Dave break down why Alzheimer's is not a single disease but a soup of modifiable problems, why your lab results can show "normal" while your brain is starving, and how the five pillars of brain health connect directly to longevity, mitochondria function, and human performance. They also get into the brain effects of GLP-1s, the therapeutic promise of psychedelics like psilocybin and ketamine, the role of nootropics and supplements like B12, lithium orotate, and CoQ10, and why your VO2 max may be the single most important number for brain aging. . You'll Learn: Why 97% of Alzheimer's cases involve multiple modifiable causes and what to do about each one How to physically grow your hippocampus through exercise, meditation, and nutrition Why "normal" lab ranges are actively harming millions of people and what optimal actually looks like The 7 everyday things that are shrinking your brain right now How stress, loneliness, and isolation cause measurable brain atrophy Which supplements including B12, lithium orotate, CoQ10, and nootropics support long-term brain health Why VO2 max predicts brain aging better than almost any other marker What psychedelics like psilocybin and ketamine actually do to your brain according to a Johns Hopkins neurologist How the APOE4 gene affects Alzheimer's risk and why exercise can erase that risk entirely Why mitochondria health is the foundation of both brain function and longevity Thank you to our sponsors! - Viome | Check it out at viome.com and use code 10DAVE for 10% off. Are ZYNs gas-station Ozempic or a dopamine loan shark? Nick Pell digs into the nicotine pouch boom this Skeptical Sunday — and the verdict is messy.Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we're joined by writer and researcher Nick Pell!Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1340On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:ZYNs are a tobacco-free nicotine pouch born from Swedish "snus." Swedish Match engineers extracted nicotine salts and loaded them into food-grade fillers, creating a shelf-stable white pouch that doesn't stain teeth or require spitting. Philip Morris bought the company for $16 billion in 2022.The harm-reduction case is strong, but "less harmful" isn't "harmless." ZYNs skip the carbon monoxide, tar, and lung damage of cigarettes, and carry roughly 90 — 99% lower carcinogens. But they still raise heart rate and blood pressure, can cause gum recession, disrupt sleep, and remain wildly addictive. The user base skews young, male, and white. Men are 88% of the market, and the 19-30 bracket is fastest-growing, with use doubling in 2024-2025. Adoption is concentrated in white, high-income, urban circles like tech, law, and finance where smoking is socially radioactive.Nicotine has real cognitive perks — with a catch. A meta-analysis of 41 studies found genuine gains in alertness, reaction time, and focus, plus appetite suppression ("gas station Ozempic"). The catch: for addicts, these benefits mostly just return you to baseline rather than lifting you above it.If you already smoke, switching is a genuine win you can act on today. For a smoker, trading cigarettes for pouches is described as "trading a motorcycle for a minivan" — vastly less likely to kill you. Harm reduction beats abstinence-only, since switchers are twice as likely to stay off cigarettes as those using gum or lozenges.Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. The Hidden Causes of Brain Fog, Anxiety, and Chronic Illness: Mold, Parasites, Histamine, and Low Cortisol If you're exhausted, inflamed, and can't figure out why, the answer might be hiding in your histamine, your hormones, your home, or something living inside you that your doctor will never test for. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Jessica Peatross, a former hospitalist turned functional medicine powerhouse who walked away from a conventional medical career after discovering that 90% of disease traces back to lifestyle, environment, and the toxins most doctors ignore. After graduating magna cum laude and earning her medical degree from the University of Louisville, Dr. Jess pursued training in functional medicine, nutrigenomics, and alternative therapies, and now helps thousands of patients reverse chronic illness through her KillBindSweat method and WellnessPlus app. She is also the formulator and CMO of Aegis Formulas and a leading voice at international health conferences. If chronic illness, mold toxicity, or hormonal chaos is on your radar, she is the person you want in your corner. Together, Dave and Dr. Jess go deep into the hidden drivers of mystery symptoms that functional medicine is finally starting to crack open. They cover why low cortisol is more dangerous than high cortisol, how histamine and mast cell activation syndrome explain everything from anxiety and brain fog to endometriosis and POTS, and why most "Lyme disease" is actually undiagnosed mold toxicity. They also break down the parasite epidemic hiding in plain sight across the United States, the B vitamin mistake making millions of people sicker, and why your metabolism, mitochondria, and mental health are all downstream of things your standard lab panel will never catch. This episode also gets into the real story behind Dr. Jess surrendering her California medical license rather than comply with a system she believed was working against patient health. Her firsthand account of the medical board process is something every person who cares about medical freedom needs to hear. You'll Learn: Why everyone who is chronically sick has a low cortisol awakening response and what to do about it How histamine drives anxiety, racing thoughts, palpitations, bloating, skin issues, and hormonal chaos Why 90% of people diagnosed with Lyme disease actually have toxic mold and how to test for both The parasite epidemic in the U.S. and why standard testing misses most of it How the spike protein reactivates dormant viruses and feeds the histamine loop behind long COVID Why synthetic B6 causes the very neuropathy it is supposed to fix, and what to take instead The cortisol, adrenaline, and blood pressure connection that explains "wired but tired" How progesterone stabilizes mast cells and why estrogen dominance fuels inflammation and reactivity Why Dave Asprey uses low-dose cortisol, dexamethasone, and modafinil as part of his daily performance stack The mold binders that actually work, and which popular ones can harm hypermobile people How nicotine at low doses blocks spike protein from ACE2 receptors and protects the brain What the MTHFR gene, methylation, and folic acid have to do with breast cancer, depression, and estrogen detox Thank you to our sponsors! - iRestore | Reverse hair loss at www.irestore.com/DAVE and get exclusive savings on the iRestore Elite, use code DAVE - KILLSwitch | If you're ready for the best sleep of your life, order now at https://www.switchsupplements.com/and use code DAVE for 20% off - Calroy | Go to Calroy.com/DAVE for exclusive discounts on Arterosil HP, Vascanox HP and all Calroy products. - Cowboy Colostrum | Get your gut right by going to cowboycolostrum.com/asprey for 25% off of your entire order. -Amp | If you're ready to make fitness fit into your life, go to amp.ai to check it outDave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking.
