Dr. Jodi Aman, renowned psychotherapist and TEDx speaker, joins Dr. Amy and Sandy on this episode of the Brainy Moms podcast to uncover the root causes behind the escalating anxiety epidemic among teenagers. It's a bold statement, but modern conveniences might be making things worse. Dr. Aman suggests that the reduction in problem-solving opportunities due to cultural shifts has led to increased negativity and entitlement among teens. She argues that chores, often seen as mundane, are vital in alleviating anxiety, instilling resilience, and combating negative thought patterns. By categorizing chores into tedious, challenging, and generous, we examine how each type plays a crucial role in developing essential life skills and when tying chores to allowances might be appropriate.Anxiety, often misunderstood as mere fear, is redefined in our conversation as a spectrum of discomfort triggered by stress hormones. Dr. Aman challenges the misconception of anxiety as a chemical imbalance and talks about the stigma that idea creates. Our discussion also touches on the historical context of anxiety, examining how our biological instincts have evolved to manage stress. In the final segment, we explore the power of community, activities, and genuine human connections in fostering social engagement and mental well-being. Whether through family involvement in communal activities or even community theater, these experiences are pivotal in building a sense of belonging. We also offer actionable tips to guide teenagers towards a path of self-acceptance and agency. This week, we had an engaging and enlightening discussion with Dr. Ashley Smith about teen anxiety. Dr. Ashley Smith is an award-winning licensed psychologist and expert in anxiety, and we explore the critical differences between stress and anxiety, the various factors that are causing the surge in teen anxiety, and actionable strategies for parents and educators to support teens who are struggling. Dr. Ashley highlights the importance of distinguishing typical adolescent stress from pervasive anxiety that disrupts daily life, and she discusses the role of societal shifts like technology, social media, and recent global events in shaping teens' mental health, alongside challenges like academic pressure. She also offers some practical advice on recognizing hidden signs of anxiety, such as perfectionism, avoidance, and emotional dysregulation. Our conversation also uncovers how modern culture, including the “good vibes only” mindset and misinformation on social media, impacts teens' ability to process their emotions, with Dr. Ashley highlighting early intervention and equipping listeners with tools to help teens build resilience, from modeling healthy coping strategies to encouraging bravery in the face of adversity. Whether you're a parent, educator, or caregiver of teens who suffer from anxiety, this episode provides valuable insights into supporting teens through challenges while fostering their psychological strength. Show Notes: [2:23] - Anxiety, Dr. Ashley explains, acts as a warning system, but excessive anxiety can disrupt functioning and become a disorder. [5:45] - Dr. Ashley stresses the importance of early intervention for anxiety; it worsens over time and increases the risk of depression and suicide. [7:39] - Anxiety shows up in various ways, including aggression, perfectionism, and avoidance. [10:23] - Phones aren't inherently bad, but social media use can worsen anxiety through comparisons, cyberbullying, and sleep disruption. [12:17] - Dr. Ashley argues that technology and social media have amplified teen anxiety, with factors like COVID-19 and social inequality contributing. [15:14] - Anxiety and depression often exist in tandem, with societal pressures and heavy workloads increasing teens' stress. [18:00] - Anxiety should not be used as an excuse for inaction; building resilience and equipping teens with tools is very important. [19:26] - It's so important for parents to help kids manage anxiety, teach coping skills, and encourage being brave. [22:42] - Modeling anxiety strategies shows kids how to cope, but therapy can offer further support. [23:52] - Ashley points out that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are effective treatments for anxiety. [26:38] - Parents should approach therapy conversations gently, understanding that their teen may not recognize their anxiety. [27:24] - Treating teen anxiety can involve parents using strategies like SPACE, focusing on calm, non-judgmental conversations. [30:21] - Parents of teens with anxiety often feel isolated and judged, but Dr. Ashley encourages listeners that support groups can help. [32:57] - To manage social anxiety, parents should limit exposure to social media to prevent unnecessary stress. Send us a textI just recorded a fascinating episode about anxiety that I had to share with you. I've been diving into this incredible book called "Anxiety Rx" by Dr. Russell Kennedy, and it's completely shifted how I think about anxiety management. Here's what blew my mind: We've been approaching anxiety backward!Instead of trying to think our way out of anxiety, we need to start with our bodies first. You see, when we experience trauma (and yes, that includes things like rejection or feeling shame – stuff we've all been through), those emotions get stored in our body as "alarms." Sometimes these alarms go off and we don't even know why. What happens next? Our brain tries to "help" by creating what Dr. Kennedy hilariously calls "brain droppings" – all those worrying thoughts that are really just distractions from what we're feeling in our body. The solution? Feel, don't think. I know, I know – easier said than done! But there's this beautiful practice Dr. Kennedy suggests:Place your hand on your heart (or wherever you feel the anxiety)Take slow, deep breathsSimply say to yourself: "I am safe in this moment"It's about treating that anxious part of yourself like you would a scared child – with compassion and understanding, not judgment. In this episode, I break down:The ALARMS system (what creates anxiety in the first place)Why worry is just a distractionPractical tools to work with your body instead of your mindThe ABCDE method for anxiety managementWant to learn more? Listen to or Watch the full episode below. And if you're struggling with anxiety right now, remember – I offer free anxiety audits where we can talk about what's going on and create a plan just for you, even if we never work together formally.Your anxiety doesn't have to be a life sentence. There are tools, there is hope, and there is a community here ready to support you.P.S. If you found this helpful, please share it with someone who might need it. We're all in this together.

It's been a great summer! But now it's fall and your tween and teen sons, nephews, brothers, and cousins are back in school. Teen anxiety is on the rise with pre-teen boys feeling that stress. But there is recourse! Multihyphenate mental health advocate Kyle Mitchell joins us this week and shares his wisdom and experience with helping teenagers manage social anxiety. Remoy shares his experience with tween social anxiety after changing schools Kyle had a very similar experience and reflects back on dealing with anxiety as a tween. Turns out this experience is common among teen boys. They wanted to but had a hard time making friends and spent their time trying to avoid being noticed and judged.Remoy puts on his science teacher cap and lets us in on where this anxiety comes from.He walks us through the brain functions and glands that cause our physical and mental development. Our bodies develop faster than our mind, and we have to play catch-up to manage it all… How does that impact boys trying to survive new social situations? The prefrontal cortex is responsible for a lot of our mental processes, and yet, most of us know so little about it. Even if their body is physically mature, hormonal teenagers will not have a fully developed brain for another ten years. It all seems so unfair…Hormones help us manage stress but are also responsible for puberty, a highly stressful time in our lives.Kyle reminds us that anxiety is useful! The goal isn't to get rid of it but to manage it.Teenagers develop strategies for survival in social situations that could make them feel alone.Kyle shares some truths and tips about how to manage that, particularly for boys, who by that time, have already learned to repress emotional expression. He stresses the importance of boys developing a friend group that they can confide in and be vulnerable with.Dealing with self-esteem and confidence issues is universal even if it doesn't feel like it and knowing that can help boys overcome the fear of sharing themselves more openly. How to teach boys to be vulnerable? Kyle reframes what strength actually can look like: sharing is more than caring; it's actually a show of strength. How have you dealt with social anxiety over the years? What would you tell your teenage self about dealing with self-doubt and lack of confidence? We'll say it again: sharing is caring! Share your stories and takeaways and we'll share them with our online community! In our deep dive, Kyle shares his own story dealing with anxiety and how this led him to the work he does helping teens and tweens deal with theirs. He walks us through the strategies he used to help him manage anxiety as a young man. Self-love was the missing piece for Kyle and is for a lot of boys. He shares his feelings of self-hate and what led him to a turning point.Kyle is a father now and sees how his own kids deal with self-love and acceptance.Kyle shares his three-step process for dealing with social anxiety (37:39)Exposure therapy opened a whole new world for Kyle and got him thirsting for stretching his comfort zone.Rewards systems are hugely helpful. BoysWhile self-love is the name of the game, that term can be a turnoff to boys because it's associated with femininity.Kyle exposes how using the right language to draw boys into their healing. What was the turning point for Kyle, where he realized that anxiety wasn't running his life anymore?Kyle shares how working uncomfortability into his life and his family's life has changed everything. He loves looking back on his journey going from being an anxious kid to being a public speaker helping kids with anxiety. Kyle shares why his work is so important and the gratification seeing people move past their fears brings him.Kyle plans to visit schools with The DUDE Project this fall to help more kids deal with anxiety. Samantha had a moment of gratitude.Like we said above, teen anxiety is on the rise in the US. Please share this conversation with anyone who might benefit from it and check out mental health resources on our website. Thanks for listening!

As September looms on the horizon, many of you may be seeing an uptick in your teen's anxiety - as the back-to-school anxieties start rising up. So this week, I bring you a story of hope in the form of Eve & Alfie - a mum & son who know only too well the stress, distress, and challenges that school can bring. Diagnosed with autism at the age of 4 and despite having an educational health & care plan, Alfie struggled tremendously at school, resulting in large periods when he was not able to go at all. Now 18 (at the time of recording), he and his mum share their candid & very real story of what it took to get through it and offer a beacon of light for other families in a similar situation. “When you are in that world, those dark days, you don't think you are going to get through it” says Eve, but their journey provides a true testament to the resilience that can be built through connection, communication, and unwavering support. Send us a Text Message.Remember a couple weeks back when we talked about expecting worry? Well, this time we're taking it a step further. We're learning how to actually talk to our worries! I know, it sounds a bit odd at first, but stick with me here. The idea is to personify our anxiety - give it a character, a face, maybe even a silly voice. For me, it's Mrs. Crawley from Downton Abbey (if you know, you know!). By doing this, we can separate ourselves from our anxiety and have a conversation with it.I shared some examples of how to chat with your worry:Acknowledge it: "Hey there, Worry. I knew you'd show up for the first day of school."Be friendly: "Come along for the ride, but you'll see there's nothing to fear."Boss it around (in a playful way): "Knock it off! This isn't an emergency."The cool thing is, this technique works for all ages. I even had a 59-year-old client use it successfully! For parents, I emphasized the importance of modeling this behavior and then coaching our kids to do it themselves. It's all about helping them become independent anxiety-managers.Oh, and exciting news! I'm starting a parent book study group where we can dive deeper into these concepts together. If you're interested, sign up HERE!I'd love to hear how this technique works for you or your kids. Give it a try and let me know!
