Imagine being locked in a police interrogation room for 48 hours straight - you haven't eaten, barely slept, your anxiety levels are at an all-time high, and you're being intensely questioned about a crime that you haven't committed. You're innocent, so the truth will come out, right?  In Australia, it's estimated that up to a third of wrongful convictions involve a false confession. In the US, of the 258 wrongful convictions overturned by the Innocence Project, 25% involved a false confession.  In this episode, Dr Hayley Cullen reveals the psychology behind what leads to false confessions, and how false memories can be created in the minds of people under interrogation. This episode is an encore of one of my favourite episodes of all time, where I dive deep into the minutiae of memory, how false memories are formed, how we can implant memories and how memories can be manipulated, and how you can improve your own memory. In this episode I'll discuss how memories form, how consolidation happens, the difference between short term and long term memory, what happens to your memory when you get lesions or accidents or certain brain conditions like strokes or brain damage. At the end I'll touch on ways that you can actually improve your memory and I think it's important because memory is one of the major causes of stress and depression. So pay attention! This can be a very divisive topic for survivors One of the ways that our mind protects us when we experience trauma is to repress the experience This is helpful to us at the time of trauma but even though the memory is hidden the trauma still affects us If you have symptoms of trauma without any explanation for these symptoms it can be because the memories have been repressed Sometimes these memories don't come to the surface until something reminds of us of the trauma later in life If you are experiencing symptoms of trauma that are affecting you without any obvious explanations it could be because of repressed memories There are ways to uncover these memories that will help you to understand and recover from this It is important to find the root issues of your coping disorders rather than just treating them because your mind will often just find other methods to cope until you actually get to the actual trauma that you are hiding from --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kevin-bolger4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kevin-bolger4/support

I'm thrilled to share with you the latest episode of "Flourish or Fold: Stories of Resilience," where we dive deep into the transformative world of spiritual growth and the power of psychedelics. I had the pleasure of sitting down with the remarkable Austin Mao, head minister and founder of Ceremonia, an energetic church that's redefining spiritual practice in Colorado. The Energetic Church & Psychedelics as Sacraments: We explored the intriguing concept of an energetic church and how psychedelics, like ayahuasca, are used as sacred tools to deepen our connection with the divine. Austin opened up about his first encounter with ayahuasca and the profound impact it had on his life, reshaping his memories and guiding him on a path of enlightenment.Guiding Others Through Personal Transformation: Austin and I discussed a crucial question: Should one do their own inner work before leading others? The answer is a resounding yes! Austin emphasized the importance of self-accountability and practicing what we preach to truly guide others toward their spiritual truth.Challenges, Intuition, and Spiritual Ego: Life's challenges are often our greatest teachers. Austin shared his personal struggles, including overcoming pride and spiritual ego, and how these experiences cemented his commitment to his spiritual journey. We also delved into the art of accessing intuition, quieting the mind, and tuning into our body's signals. The Role of Suffering in Growth: Do we need to suffer to change? This thought-provoking question led us to discuss David Hawkins' map of consciousness and the pursuit of truth. Austin recounted a pivotal moment of rejection at an ayahuasca retreat that forced him to confront his humility and the lessons learned from suffering. This episode is a treasure trove of wisdom for anyone interested in spiritual growth, the role of psychedelics in religious practice, and the journey towards self-discovery. It was a reminder of the importance of doing our own inner work before guiding others, the power of intuition, and the profound lessons that can emerge from our darkest moments. Repressed Memories: Can You Forget About Trauma?

The idea of repressed memories goes all the way back to Freud, through the 90's when therapists accidentally implanted people with false memories, through the courtrooms, and into today where the idea of repressed memories is still popular among lay people and controversial among therapists and researchers. So today you'll learn three skills for better understanding lost memories, aka dissociative amnesia or repressed memories (or at least my opinion about it). The idea of repressed memories goes all the way back to Freud, one of his first patients, Anna O had all sorts of unexplained physical symptoms, when she began talking with her doctor about her life, previously forgotten memories of trauma came back and as she talked about them, her physical symptoms went away. Freud developed the concept of repression, that current symptoms are all related to something that happened in the past, that we repress the memories to protect ourselves, and that we must analyze our psyche in order to uncover it, integrate it and then be freed from it. So that's where the whole process of psychoanalysis came from, the idea of patients laying on a couch, talking about their childhood. But this concept of repressed memories has become very controversial, because of the way memory works. Most people assume that memory is like a video, your memory records things as they actually happened and stores those memories away, permanently. But memory doesn't work like that, memories are highly influenced by our biases and how we're feeling during or after an event. Even Freud learned that many of the things that his patients “remembered” weren't actual events. Memories can be altered, implanted, influenced, and straight up created under suggestion. Lot's of laboratory experiments have demonstrated that our memories are terribly fickle. If you want to see for yourself how this can work, watch this YouTube video “Take This Test and Experience How False Memories Are Made”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5sk504Yc94 After I filmed this video on repressed memories and dissociative amnesia, the NYT published a very relevant article and two strong opinions on it: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/27/opinion/recovered-memory-therapy-mental-health.html https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/29/opinion/letters/mental-health.html Looking for affordable online counseling? The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction. Ask Kati Anything ep. 138 | Your mental health podcast, with Kati Morton, LMFT Today's Kati talks about coming to terms with repressed memories and the fact that they may never be complete. She also explains how she works with people who feel like they are behind in life, the importance of eye contact in therapy, and why we can crave negative attention. She also discusses what she does when a client self injures in session, how we can know if it's safe to start exercising again in ED recovery, and why we can sometimes feel full and sick when we haven't eaten very much. Finally, she talks about weight gain in ED recovery and how to mentally manage it. Audience questions I have been in therapy for three years now to help me work through CSA and my insane workload from university (I'll be graduating in a month thankfully). I didn't know anything like that had happened to me until... I was just wondering as a therapist what approaches you would use when working with clients who feel like they are behind in life due to societal pressures? I ask this as I sometimes feel like I'm somewhat behind compared to people of my age in relation to relationships... Why do I crave negative attention? I have always had a fascination with / get excited about the idea of punishment or “getting into trouble.” I also tend to do things to draw negative attention in therapy. For example, the most recent round of therapy sessions I... Hi Kati and community, How important do you think is eye contact in therapy? Are you 'getting the most out of therapy' even if you never establish eye contact (over a longer period like one or two years)? The sensitive nature of the therapy setting makes me feel rather vulnerable and... My question is, what would you do if a client was self-injuring in session? I have really bad eczema on my hands and if I clench my fists, all the wounds split open. I have found myself doing this in session when we are talking about hard... About ED recovery: when do I know that it's time to exercise again? Are there "signs" I can look out for? Like having a regular period I have an eating disorder, anorexia. The problem is that despite my lack of intake I keep gaining weight. I'm 46 years old and am wondering if that's why. I have a registered dietitian and an eating disorder therapist and even though I'm trying to work on recovery, this constant weight gain is really distressing for me... Kati, I'm trying to recover from an eating disorder, but it's really difficult because whenever I eat, I just feel sick and overly full even though there's no way I could be full because I'm not eating enough to warrant that. Will I ever stop feeling overly full and sick and exhausted after eating? It triggers me to purge not to lose weight, but just because I feel... ---- KATI'S BOOKS Traumatized https://geni.us/Bfak0j Are u ok? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy ---- ONLINE THERAPY While Kati does not currently offer online therapy, her sponsor Betterhelp will connect you with a licensed, online counselor. In this live stream we're joined by Dr. Kirk Honda of @Psychology In Seattle ! He joins me to discuss the psychology of repressed memories, re-characterized memories, false memories, and other issues related to memory and trauma. How can we tell the difference between these different things? What do data and statistics show about the commonality of these different phenomena? Come join us to learn with us! This comes up in the context of the litigation between Brian Warner p/k/a Marilyn Manson, Evan Rachel Wood, Illma Gore, Ashley Morgan Smithline, and others. FOR CONTEXT: Over the years since 2016, Evan Rachel Wood began speaking publicly about domestic violence, saying she had been abused by two unnamed men. On February 21, 2021, Wood named Brian Warner as one of her abusers, alleging that he abused her physically and emotionally during their romantic relationship which lasted between 2006 and 2010. On the same day, a handful of other women also made statements claiming to be victims of Warner's abuse. His alleged victims include Ashley Morgan Smithline, Esme Bianco, and Ashley Walters. Some of these women claim to have had repressed memories of the abuse, which only became apparent in their minds after speaking with other alleged victims as a group. In March 2022, Brian Warner, p/k/a Marilyn Manson, filed a lawsuit against Evan Rachel Wood and Ashley Gore aka Illma Gore. In the lawsuit, he alleges four causes of action: defamation per se, intentional infliction of emotional distress, violation of computer hacking laws, and violation of laws barring impersonation over the internet. Penny was last on the show August 23rd, 2022, Season 3, Episode 92 where we discussed the importance of doing your own research on the Deep State And the Legal Arena.    We discussed  repressed memory which  are memories that we try to unconsciously avoid thinking about, because it is usually caused from a traumatic experience from our past history. These memories are not thought of for several years and recovered later usually from a trigger response.    However in Psychology, a false memory is a grey area where someone remembers something that did not happen at all and remembers it differently from the way it really happened. Elizabeth Loftus developed a theory after running an experiment involving 150 subjects from the University of Washington and noticed that when a preconceived idea was one of false information it could only be explained by the "assumption hypothesis" and not the "strength hypothesis," Loftus explained that a theory needed to be devised for complex visual experiences where the main hypothesis plays a significantly more important role than a situational "strength."    We discussed Ted Gunderson, head of the Los Angeles FBI and an American author and conspiracy theorist. He did leave the FBI and became a PI as well as his involvement in the McMartin Case. The false memory syndrome was discussed in this case.      Great discussion on Slam the Gavel with Penny L.A. Licensed Hypnotherapist Lesley Mitchell-Clarke joins the show to talk about abductees experiences, what the process of hypnotherapy is like, what these beings want from us, and if the trauma of these experiences ever truly heals...  Get Lesley Mitchell-Clarke's book, "Intersections" here: https://amzn.to/3P2dedw Darkness Radio has partnered with the UFO Disclosure Symposium in late May! Have you been wounded? Physically, emotionally, psychologically, or even spiritually? These wounds can cause us great harm in areas where we make decisions, how we think, how we live our lives, and in what we believe about who we are. How do we overcome negative labels, word curses, repressed memories and abuse we learned to normalize to survive?  Sometimes a wounded person can succeed in business and life, but they will never be able to obtain joy or fulfillment until they can get free of the pain. And oftentimes, wounded people struggle to succeed at all.  So, let's get you healed! Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. 3 John 2
