EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Drake University men's basketball team overcame a double digit first half deficit and held on to edge Evansville, 60-59 at the Ford Center on Saturday (Jan. 8). "Proud of the win, head coach Darian DeVries said. "Especially to go on road on short notice. This is what league play is about. You find a way to win. We were lucky to survive on that last little sequence." At the 15:16 mark early in the first half, Tucker DeVries buried a left wing trey to move the Bulldogs ahead, 9-8. The game was tied at 21 points apiece with 7:03 to play in the opening half before the Purple Aces responded with a 7-0 run that ended with 4:30 left before halftime. Evansville got comfortable from beyond the arc towards the end of the first half, including Shamar Givance, who connected on a trifecta with 2:57 to go for a double digit 33-23 advantage. Making back-to-back starts, Roman Penn sank a shot in the waning seconds of the first half as Drake trailed 33-27 at half. The Bulldogs were firing on all cylinders coming out of the halftime break. D.J. Wilkins knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the first three minutes of the second half to pull Drake within one possession, 38-36. DeVries tallied a pair of baskets as the Bulldogs sat in front by a 42-41 score with 13:19 remaining. "I thought coming out at halftime we did a good job of flipping the switch, DeVries said. "We were flat in the first half." The visitors led by as many as nine points (53-44) with 9:30 left in the second half after Tremell Murphy drove in for a layup. Darnell Brodie muscled inside to put Drake ahead, 60-54 as 2:39 was displayed on the clock. The Purple Aces did not go quietly and trimmed the deficit to only one point while getting the final possession of the game. Drake's defense hunkered down and forced a pair of misses to fend off Evansville on the road. Drake men's basketball is scheduled to play next against Illinois State inside the Knapp Center on Wednesday (Jan. 12) at 7 p.m. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Drake University men's basketball team matched its season high with 15 3-pointers and wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with an 82-53 victory over Mount Marty at the Knapp Center on Tuesday night (Dec. 28). "I think confidence is a huge thing," head coach Darian DeVries said. "Seeing the ball go through the net matters in basketball. Our team has a done a really good job of not playing the opponent, but being the best version of us that we can be." It was victory No. 80 for Darian DeVries, who reached that figure faster than any coach in program history, needing 113 games. Maury John had been the fastest, getting to 80 wins in 143 games. John is Drake's career victory leader with a 211-131 record. Drake heads into two straight months of Missouri Valley Conference play with 10-4 record that includes a league victory over Valparaiso back on Dec. 2. It was the 12th straight victory at home for the Bulldogs, who have won 30 of their last 31 at the Knapp Center. Mount Marty, an NAIA school from Yankton, S.D., got 16 points from Gio Diaz. Tyrell Harper grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked three shots for the Lancers, who counted the game as an exhibition. Drake jumped on the Lancers early, bolting to a 12-0 lead and holding Mount Marty without a basket for the game's first 7:47. An 11-0 run that included a pair of 3-pointers from DeVries and another by Murphy made it 31-8 and the Bulldogs led 41-13 at halftime, hitting that figure when DeVries took a step to his right and buried a 3 from the top of the key at the buzzer. It was Drake's largest halftime margin to date and the fewest points an opponent has scored in the opening half this season. The Bulldogs held Mount Marty to five field goals in the half and the Lancers went 0-for-11 from behind the arc. Mount Marty rebounded with a 40-point second half on 48 percent shooting, but the Bulldogs never were in danger. They enjoyed their biggest lead at 66-29 on a Sturtz putback with 10:32 left. The comfortable margin allowed DeVries to shuffle players in and out throughout the final 20 minutes. Drake finished 15-for-30 from 3-point range and shot 49.1 percent overall (27-for-55). DeVries used 10 players and all 10 scored, led by senior D.J. Wilkins with 16 points, one short of his season high. Wilkins made a season-best four 3-pointers in six attempts and finished 6-for-9 overall in his 110th consecutive start. Freshman Tucker DeVries scored 11 points with three 3-pointers, while senior Tremell Murphy and junior Darnell Brodie added 10 each. Senior Jonah Jackson and sophomore Okay Djamgouz each scored nine and senior Garrett Sturtz had eight. Murphy grabbed seven rebounds, while Brodie, Sturtz and sophomore Nate Ferguson each collected six. Brodie, who had been coming off the bench, got the start in place of ShanQuan Hemphill, who was held out as a precaution because of a minor foot injury. This is the fourth straight season Drake has recorded at least nine non-conference victories, something that has happened just one other time in school history. The first such stretch occurred from 1946-50. Drake jumps back into Missouri Valley Conference play with two road games -- at Missouri State at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2, and at Southern Illinois on Wednesday, Jan. 5, also at 7 p.m.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- ShanQuan Hemphill and Garrett Sturtz posted double-doubles and Darnell Brodie scored the go-ahead basket in overtime, lifting the Drake University men's basketball team to a 70-65 victory over Jackson State at the Knapp Center on Thursday night (Dec. 16). “It was a scrappy win for us tonight,” head coach Darian DeVries said. “We knew going in that Jackson State was a really good ball club. Credit Jackson State for how hard they plan and how hard they fight. Offensively, it was hard for us and a lot of that had to do with Jackson State's rim protection.” Drake improved to 7-4 on the season and won its 29th straight nonconference game at home, but the Bulldogs had to earn it against a feisty Jackson State team that forced them into difficult shots all night. Every time Drake built a lead, Jackson State stormed back and the Bulldogs couldn't breathe easily until D.J. Wilkins sank two free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining for the final margin. His bucket in the final minute of regulation produced the overtime. Drake led 21-14 with 7:23 left in the first half after Wilkins -- who had five assists -- stole the ball and fed Hemphill for a two-handed dunk. But Jackson State rallied and it was tied at 27 going into halftime. A 14-1 run in which five different players scored lifted Drake into a 43-34 lead midway through the second half. Again, Jackson State stormed back and led 60-58 with just over a minute to play. Wilkins tied it with a tough 10-foot fadeway on the left baseline with 38 seconds left, Watson missed a jumper that would have put the Tigers back in front and Hemphill snared the rebound. The Bulldogs had 10 seconds to try to win it in regulation, but Jackson State batted the ball away and the game went into overtime. Drake trailed 65-64 after Watson made one of two free throws with 1:13 left. DeVries grabbed the rebound when Watson missed his second shot and the Bulldogs went to work on the offensive end. Wilkins had the ball near the free throw and threw a perfect bounce pass down low to Brodie, who dropped in the layup for a 66-65 lead with 45 seconds left. Jackson State then missed two shots in the closing seconds and the Bulldogs rebounded both. Hemphill pulled down the first one and sank two free throws with 17.9 seconds remaining. Wilkins grabbed the rebound after Watson missed from the top of the key, got fouled and made the final two free throws. “We just came off of a game where we went to overtime and we had a different result,” DeVries said. “Tonight, I thought we did a better job defensively in overtime and that was the difference.” Hemphill, who has come on strong in recent games after a slow start to the season, led the Bulldogs with 17 points and 12 rebounds -- his first double-double this season and third of his Drake career. Sturtz added 14 points and 10 rebounds -- the fourth time in his career he has reached double figures in both categories. In the last four games, Hemphill has averaged 14.8 points while shooting 53.8 percent (21-of-39). Brodie gave the Bulldogs a big lift off the bench, scoring 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting and grabbing four rebounds, three of them on the offensive end. Tucker DeVries added 10 points, his fifth straight game in double figures. It was the second straight overtime game for the Bulldogs, who lost to Clemson 90-80 in Atlanta last Saturday and won this one despite shooting a season lo 38.2 percent from the field. Jackson State (2-9) completed a three-game swing through Iowa with Thursday night's loss, which followed setbacks at Iowa State and Northern Iowa. All of the Tigers' games this season have been on the road and they won't play at home until Dec. 29. Jayveous McKinnis just missed a triple-double for the Tigers, scoring 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking nine shots. The nine blocks were the second-most in an NCAA game this season. Gabe Watson added 17 points for Jackson State -- 15 after halftime. Drake will be back in against on Sunday, Dec. 19 at the Knapp Center against Chicago State with a 2 p.m. tip-off.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
