The Baylor Bears were ran out of the gym by Shaka Smart's Marquette Golden Eagles, officially sending Scott Drew's team into panic mode ahead of a huge matchup with Gonzaga on Friday. Baylor is one of a handful of top ranked teams we consider pretenders, alongside the traditional blue bloods of Kansas, Kentucky, Duke and North Carolina. The National Player of the Year race has a new frontrunner, Purdue forward Zach Edey, while the traditional bigs of Drew Timme, Oscar Tshiebwe, and Armando Bacot remain in the conversation. Finally, we look at some potential upsets this week/weekend, including Kansas losing to Seton Hall and a potential No. 1 team losing, with Houston taking on Saint Mary's on Saturday. Phil Ford, one of the best players in University of North Carolina basketball history, is this week's guest on “Sports Legends of the Carolinas.” The 1978 National Player of the Year and a longtime assistant basketball coach at UNC, Ford held UNC's scoring record for 30 years (despite playing in an era with no three-point shot), until Tyler Hansbrough broke that record in 2008. He still ranks No. 2 all-time on UNC's scoring list and has his jersey hangs in the rafters. Now 66, Ford also had a seven-year career as an NBA player, and was then an assistant coach for three NBA teams before retirement. In Part 1 of our conversation, Ford and I talked about his being recruited by Dean Smith, making the Four Corners famous in Chapel Hill in the 1970s, and the injury and alcohol addiction that ended Ford's NBA career. On Part 2 of our conversation, Ford reflects on following in the footsteps of fellow "Sports Legend of the Carolinas" Charlie Scott, playing against other collegiate greats, and the loss he can't forget. Then he previews two big summer hoops tours starting this week - Kentucky and Arkansas. Here's a full rundown: Most intriguing teams in college football Part I (2:00): With three weeks until the start of college football, Aaron opens the show by discussing Part I of the eight most intriguing teams in college football. What are realistic expectations in Year 1 for Lincoln Riley at USC, how safe is Steve Sarkisian at Texas and is this finally the year Scott Frost figures things out at Nebraska? Plus, Vegas sees LSU as a six-win team - how patient will Tigers fans stay if that happens? Most intriguing teams in college football Part II (24:00): From there Aaron continues with part II of most intriguing teams - and opens the segment with an audible. After meeting an angry Oklahoma fan he decides to discuss the Sooners, as well as if Jim Harbaugh has already lost all his goodwill after last year's playoff run. Plus, thoughts on A&M, Clemson and more! Previewing Kentucky and Arkansas's hoops summer tours (50:00): Finally, Aaron wraps by discussing summer tours for Kentucky and Arkansas that kick off this week. Happy hump day ladies and gentlemen — this is Noles News Now presented by Tomahawk Nation, covering the latest in FSU athletics.  Let's dive in with some recruiting news off the top — yesterday, the Seminoles extended offers to a pair of 2023 quarterbacks — four-star Ricky Collins out of Louisiana (currently committed to the Purdue Boilermakers) and three-star Brock Glenn out of Memphis. Each hold more than a few Power 5 offers, showing that the Seminoles aren't just content taking a single QB in this year's class. Currently, four-star Chris Parson is the only quarterback committed — he's been locked in with the Seminoles for nearly a year now, becoming a bellcow of the class while continuing to expand his game. He had a good showing at the Elite 11 Regional in mid-May, showcasing why he's considered the No. 16 quarterback in the country by 247. So why the offers? While the staff is high on Parson, putting all their eggs in one basket isn't their goal — FSU took one quarterback in 2022, AJ Duffy, while failing to land a high school prospect in 2021 after the flip of Luke Altmyer to Ole Miss. With just three scholarship QBs currently on roster, it's imperative for the staff to start building depth and competition at the position. In baseball news, Parker Messick, has been named a semifinalist for two National Player of the Year awards — the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award after being named a first-team All-ACC pitcher, leading the league in strikeouts, strikeouts per nine innings, strikeout-to-walk ratio, and WHIP. Meanwhile, the No. 9 seed Seminoles kick off ACC Tournament play today vs. Virginia, with a second matchup vs. Notre Dame set for Thursday. Bryce Hubbart will be today's starting pitcher, with Messick handling primary duties on Thursday. The Cavalier offense is led by third baseman Jake Gelof and left fielder Alex Tappen. The first team All-ACC duo are second in the nation in combined RBIS at 144. Brian Gursky is the ace on the mound with a 7-1 record overall with 78 strikeouts on the season. In the ACC tournament, FSU holds a 9-8 record over UVA. Overall, the Seminoles are 59-31 all-time against the Cavs. Friday's game will be a chance for the Seminoles to get revenge for a weekend sweep at the hands of Notre Dame in Tallahassee earlier this season. The Irish are also coming off a regular season-ending series loss (Miami). Notre Dame's top three starters all boast an ERA under 3.00, led by John Bertrand. FSU will most likely face either Bertrand or Austin Temple in their Thursday matchup. On the offensive side, the Irish have a balanced attack led by Brooks Coetzee and Jack Zyska. If Florida State wins their pool, they will face the winner of Pool A on Saturday. The championship game will be played on Sunday afternoon. Florida State women's golf's longest ever run in the NCAA Championship tournament came to an end Tuesday — the Seminoles fell to Texas A&M in the quarterfinals of match play at the championship finals. The Seminoles advanced to match play for the first time in school history and finished in a tie for fifth place in the final national standings – the highest NCAA Championship finish in school history. Florida State women's tennis athletes Petra Hule and Anna Arkadianou bowed out of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Tuesday night, falling to Janice Tjen and Savannah Broadus of Pepperdine. Hule finishes her FSU career with 202 career wins in singles and doubles play combined, including a record-tying 106 wins in doubles play. Arkadianou, just a sophomore, has a chance to anchor next year's team as she gained valuable experience on FSU's No. 1 doubles tandem while being a No. 2/3 player in singles play. On today's episode of Locked On Kentucky, Lance Dawe sits down with Matt Upchurch of the Kentucky 15 podcast to discuss Oscar Tshiebwe's announcement to return to Kentucky for his senior season. The guys go over what this means for the program on the surface. Not a lot of National Player of the Year award winners return to college. In fact, most of them end up being lottery picks and working out in the NBA. Tshiebwe is a major exception to the norm. Kentucky has also thrust itself into national title contention with Big O back on roster. Lance and Matt also speculate over if Kentucky's frontcourt is officially set with Tshiebwe back. Lance Ware, Jacob Toppin, and Damion Collins should be enough, and if five-star Leonard Miller commits to Kentucky, then the Wildcats will certainly be set. Finally, Lance reads off three common complaints of Kentucky fans from an article written by Mark Story, and Matt gives his perspective on the complaints. The Iowa women's basketball team put on a clinic yesterday against a top-10 ranked Michigan Wolverines squad to claim the honor of regular-season Big Ten Champions. Lisa Bluder's Iowa Hawkeye squad, playing in front of a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye arena put on one heck of a show led by National Player of the Year candidate Caitlin Clark's absurd performance.  We break that all down right here before diving into Friday's win for the men's basketball team over Nebraska and a look ahead to tonight's matchup against Northwestern. Our weekly episode covers the usual - news and notes in Root's Roundup, ruminations in Three Man Thoughts, game previews in Game Previews. The Thoughts section is particularly intriguing, though - the fellas debate the merits (or lack thereof) of Kentucky, Texas, and Arkansas, examine two mid-major darlings and discuss MM at-larges, plus play a game of "Real or Not" regarding several top 40 squads.  Thanks to Homefield Apparel for sponsoring the episode!
