Bad leadership doesn't just hurt engagement. It can literally hurt people. Studies show that working under a poor leader is one of the leading causes of stress, contributing to health issues like cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, great leaders don't just make work enjoyable. They shape culture, values, and even society itself. In today's Leadership Spark, I explore why leadership matters more than ever and what it will take to be a leader in the future. I share insights from my extensive research, including interviews with 140 CEOs from some of the world's biggest organizations and a global LinkedIn study with nearly 14,000 employees. Together, these conversations reveal how leadership is being redefined in the face of AI, globalization, and the changing expectations of employees, and why every leader needs to rethink their role as a lighthouse for the future. ________________ Start your day with the world's top leaders by joining thousands of others at Great Leadership on Substack. If you’re wondering why life feels stuck on repeat, look no further than the standards you enforce – or fail to. Standards aren’t lofty wishes scribbled in a journal. They’re the invisible lines you draw every day between what you accept and what you refuse to tolerate. They shape how you treat yourself, how you show up for others, and what you expect in return. Low standards breed excuses, sloppy habits, and mediocre results. High standards, consistently lived, spark transformation. Today, we explore the real cost of the standards you’ve set – often unconsciously – and the hidden power you hold to raise them. Because nothing changes until you do. In this episode you’ll learn:

The backlash against DEI has left many leaders unsure of how to champion inclusion in a politically charged environment. Kelli Lester, co-founder of Onyx Rising and seasoned diversity practitioner, brings clarity with a grounded, practical approach to creating workplaces where everyone truly belongs. Her journey began with a recruitment project that opened her eyes to deeper issues in workplace culture, revealing that representation without intentional inclusion often leads to high turnover among diverse talent.Kelli's philosophy evolved from advocating solely for underrepresented voices to engaging those in positions of power to drive lasting change. “Being a voice for the voiceless was my early mantra,” she shares, “but I realized that for real change to happen, I needed to spend more time with those in the majority.” Her seven behaviors of inclusive leadership—ranging from self-awareness and psychological safety to managing inclusively—offer a concrete framework for leaders seeking to move beyond performative gestures toward real cultural transformation. In our conversation, Kelli also highlights the importance of understanding generational diversity in today's multigenerational workforce. She encourages leaders to ask human-centered questions like, “What does a good day look like for you?”—underscoring that inclusive leadership means seeing the whole person, not just their demographics. With practical tools and powerful insights, this dialogue is a must for anyone ready to build teams where diverse talent can thrive and lead.

Titus1:11 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began 3 and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior; 4 To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. 5 This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— 6 if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. 7 For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, 8 but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. 9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. 10 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. 11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. 12 One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth. 15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

This episode is sponsored by Lockton, click here to learn more Watch the full video on YouTube - click hereAs the auto industry faces a new wave of uncertainty—tariffs shifting daily, global instability, and mounting supply chain questions—leaders are under pressure to act fast. For many, that means retreating into old habits, tightening control, and centralizing decisions. But Jan challenges leaders to do the opposite. She knows it's tempting. In a crisis, the structure feels safe. But Jan argues that the real power lies in authentic leadership—especially now. That means staying true to your values, trusting your people, and letting go of micromanagement.Just look at General Motors. While the industry expected GM to return to its old ways during the crisis, it didn't. Instead, the company focused on stronger supplier relationships and open communication. It worked. GM earned its highest supplier trust score in 25 years. Then there's Stellantis. After years under Carlos Tavares' top-down approach, leadership is shifting. Antonio Filosa is already building relationships—with suppliers, dealers, and unions. It's a clear sign that even the biggest players are moving toward people-first leadership.Jan's message is clear: the future of leadership in this industry isn't about control—it's about connection. If you're leading a team right now, take this moment to ask yourself: Are you leading with fear or with trust?Because in the end, how you lead through the crisis will define what kind of organization—and culture—you build coming out of it.Themes discussed in this episode:Why crises often push leaders back into command-and-control—and why that's a mistakeWhy command-and-control leadership is failing in today's rapidly changing auto industryHow authentic leadership creates faster, more sustainable results during uncertaintyThe importance of trusting your team instead of micromanaging themThe hard truth about outdated leadership models and why they hold companies backHow General Motors improved supplier relationships by leaning into empowerment and transparencyHow Stellantis is moving away from fear-based leadership with new CEO Antonio FilosaYour HostJan Griffiths is the architect of cultural change in the automotive industry. In this episode of Reflect Forward, I dive into one of the most important truths of leadership: your team doesn't need a perfect leader, they need a real, authentic one—especially now, in the age of AI and automation. As technology becomes more integrated into our daily work, it's easy for leaders to slip into the background—managing from behind a screen, buried in email threads and Zoom meetings. But leadership is, and always will be, a human endeavor. If you're not out with your team, building trust through authentic connection, you're missing the most valuable part of leadership. I share why leaders who isolate themselves behind closed doors or computer screens are failing their teams, and how something as simple as walking around and asking thoughtful questions can transform team dynamics. Management by Walking Around (MBWA) isn't a new concept, but it's more relevant than ever. When you're visible, approachable, and genuinely curious, you foster real engagement and trust. We also explore the power of authenticity—how showing up as your full, imperfect self builds stronger relationships and deeper trust. In a world where AI can mimic human interaction, your ability to empathize, connect, and be vulnerable is what sets you apart. Your team wants to trust you, and they want to feel trusted. That's the foundation of high-performing, psychologically safe teams. Plus, I leave you with one powerful, simple exercise you can try today to begin building more trust and connection with your team. It takes just a few minutes, but the impact can last a lifetime. Here's what you'll learn in this episode: Why being present and engaged with your team matters more than ever How hiding behind screens is damaging trust and connection The value of authenticity in leadership and how to show up as your true self Why AI will never replace the emotional intelligence and human intuition you bring A simple, powerful trust-building exercise you can implement today Now more than ever, your team needs you. Not your title. Not your polished image. Just you—real, present, and engaged. Tune in to be reminded why human-centered leadership is not just timeless—it's the future.
