Eliot gives his (non-traditional) Missouri Valley Conference midseason awards, Brett Ciancia of Pick Six Previews gives us the lowdown on what he thinks will happen in the CFP between Michigan vs. TCU and Ohio State vs. Georgia, and Sean Bock of 247Sports hops on and shares his expectations for Iowa vs Kentucky and we delve into what is wrong with the Hawkeyes' basketball squad
The college basketball season is about to hit full swing. A lot of the attention in Iowa is on the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones and where they might fall in the top 25. But, lucky for us, we also have two top-tier Missouri Valley Conference teams in the state. Almost every February, there is talk about how many of our big 4 teams can get into the tourney and who can make a run. This week we welcome one of the best Drake Bulldogs to ever put on the uniform, Reed Timmer. Timmer's career included many records, and he was part of the transition from a few rough years into the upshot that Drake has been on for the last several seasons. Reed Timmer grew up in Wisconsin and made the trek south to play Division I basketball in Des Moines. He stood out on and off the court at Drake, earning awards for his play and academic success. Over his first three years, the team only averaged 8 wins a year. Even as the team struggled, Timmer was among the team leaders in minutes and points each year. A coaching change shook things up before his senior season. Niko Medved came in and helped turn things around, going 17-17 and playing in the CIT. Timmer's senior season saw him reach 2,000 points and take the top spot in minutes played in his career, among other records. Those successes in the blue and white served as a springboard to playing professionally overseas and scoring over 1,000 points. After a few years and a few teams, though, he knew he was ready to retire and return home. Today, Reed Timmer sits courtside for the Bulldogs with Michael Admire and travels with the team as part of the broadcast. Staying close to the game helps him scratch that itch and see the court from another perspective. He has had a front-row seat to watch Coach Darian DeVries and Tucker DeVries as they build Drake into a competitive MVC team.

When new Athletic Director Nico Yantko stepped on Murray State's campus in his new role, it wasn't his first Racer rodeo. In fact, it is all too familiar. Yantko, who served as Murray State's starting quarterback from 2007-2009, is a two-time Racer alumnus. Nico, '09, '20, was introduced Aug. 15 as the 10th director of athletics in Murray State history, and although he has been seen around Murray in recent days preparing for his family's move to "the finest place we know," his first official day on the job is today, Sept. 1. He earned a bachelor's degree in integrated studies from Murray State in 2009 and a master's degree in human development and leadership in 2020. He returns home to Murray State as the Racers begin our first year in the Missouri Valley Conference and join the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2023. Yantko's career in collegiate athletics began as a graduate assistant in the MSU athletics department and later at North Carolina State, the University of Missouri and the University of Louisiana. Just last month, at the age of 35, The Athletic named Nico to their inaugural list of collegiate athletics rising stars under the age of 40. On the Racer Alumni Podcast, we talk to him about his experience as a Racer student-athlete, his career leading up to this point, his family, philosophy and what it means to him to guide his alma mater into the next century as we celebrate the centennial of our founding. We'll also discuss his self-proclaimed love for good pizza, his favorite ways to spend his free time and the food culture we know and love in America's friendliest city. Week 1 has arrived! Kansas State will be opening its season against the South Dakota Coyotes out of the Missouri Valley Conference. Bailey tackles the following questions regarding the Coyote football program and its expectations for the coming season: - What did last season's monumental upset win over in-state rival South Dakota State mean to coach Bob Nielson and his program? - How did the youth on the roster handle last year's home playoff loss to Southern Illinois? - What were some of the challenges coach Nielson overcame to build this South Dakota football program? - What makes MVFC 1st team preseason all-purpose back selection Carter Bell so dynamic? - What does Carson Camp need to do to take the "next step" in his development as a quarterback? - How heavily are FBS victories weighed when FCS playoff selections are made? - How many wins can the Coyotes rack up against a tough schedule? In a word, Drew Valentine is a winner. He has played a huge role in Loyola University Chicago's rise to national prominence over the last five years and was named the Ramblers' head men's basketball coach on April 5, 2021. In nine seasons on coaching staffs in his career, Valentine has guided teams to the postseason seven times, including three NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, two of which wound up with trips to the Final Four. During his five seasons at Loyola, Valentine has helped lead the Ramblers to a 124-44 overall record, three NCAA Tournament berths, a trip to the National Invitation Tournament, three regular-season Missouri Valley Conference championships and three MVC Championship titles. At 30 years of age, Valentine, a native of Lansing, Mich., is the youngest head coach in NCAA Division I men's basketball. In 2017, he was named to the Under Armour 30-Under-30 Team, presented by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), as one of the top coaches under the age of 30. Valentine made quite a splash in his first season as Loyola's head coach in 2021-22, setting a program record for wins by a first-year Rambler skipper (25), while also becoming the only first-year coach in program history to lead Loyola to a NCAA Tournament appearance. One of only three first-year head coaches to steer his club to 25 or more wins in 2021-22, Valentine also became the youngest head coach since Todd Bozeman in 1993 to lead his team to a national ranking. Loyola earned a No. 22 ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll in mid-January. Valentine put his twist on the Rambler program in 2021-22 and once again Loyola ranked among the nation's top offensive and defensive teams in the nation, while also establishing a single-season school record by knocking down 293 three-point field goals. Under Valentine's tutelage, five Ramblers collected All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades, including guard Lucas Williamson, who was tabbed MVC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, and also garnered first team all-league recognition. In four years as an assistant coach on Porter Moser's staff at Loyola, Valentine played a pivotal role in the program's ascension to national prominence, helping the Ramblers to a 99-36 (.733) overall record and a 56-16 (.778) ledger in Missouri Valley Conference action. = For his final two seasons as an assistant coach at Loyola, Valentine served as the de facto defensive coordinator for a Ramblers unit that ranked 21st in the nation in scoring defense in 2019-20 (62.7 ppg) and first in the country (56.1 ppg) in 2020-21. During his four seasons on the Loyola staff as an assistant, Loyola ranked in the top six in the nation in scoring defense three times but it wasn't just the defense that thrived. Although defense has been Loyola's calling card, the Ramblers have also ranked among Division I's best in field goal percentage in each of the last five seasons.
