Jan Jensen is in her 24th season with the Iowa women's basketball team and her 20th as associate head coach. Jensen has helped guide Iowa to 20 postseason appearances, including 17 NCAA Tournament berths. With Jensen on staff, the Hawkeyes have claimed four Big Ten Tournament and two Big Ten Regular Season titles. Most recently, Jensen and the Hawkeyes won the Big Ten Tournament Championship in 2023 and made it to the Final Four and competed in the Championship Game, becoming the 2023 NCAA National Runner Up. A nationally-known presence on the recruiting trail, she serves as the recruiting coordinator and also works with the post players. Under her tutelage, ten Hawkeyes have claimed a total of 20 All-Big Ten honors, including seven first team selections. Jensen also guided Megan Gustafson to the first consensus National Player of the Year honor in Big Ten history. Jensen was also integral in recruiting current Hawkeye star, Caitlin Clark. Clarkholds numerous National Point Guard of the Year awards, All American honors, B1G Ten Player of the Year awards and was most recently named the unanimous 2023 National Player of the Year. The Kimballton, Iowa, native Jensen graduated from Drake in 1991 with a degree in Public Relations. She left as one of the most prolific women's basketball players in Drake history and is one of only two Bulldog student-athletes to have her number retired in the Knapp Center. Off the court, Jensen is active in her community. Jensen has co-chaired record-setting United Way Fundraising campaigns, served on the boards of the United Way, Shelterhouse and Iowa City Community School District Foundation. Her recognitions include the 2007 United Way Volunteer of the Year, a Corridor Business Journal Woman of Influence in 2014, and was one of five honorees to receive the 2020 LGBTQ Legacy Leadership award by Des Moines Magazine and One Iowa. Jensen is a sought-after speaker that uses her unique experiences as a former athlete, current coach, and busy mom to engage and motivate audiences from sports arenas to corporate board rooms, to any town hall, or banquet venue. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm are likely early after midnight and into early Friday morning.Iowa guard Caitlin Clark was awarded the Naismith Trophy on Wednesday as the national player of the year in women's college basketball.Clark, the first player in Division I women's or men's history to total at least 900 points and 300 assists in a season, is averaging 27.3 points 7.3 rebounds and 8.6 assists per game in leading the third-ranked Hawkeyes (30-6) to the Final Four.Clark is the second Iowa women's basketball player in five years to win it, joining Megan Gustafson in 2019. Iowa's Luka Garza won the men's Naismith Trophy in 2021.The Hawkeyes and top-ranked, undefeated South Carolina meet in the Final Four at 8:30 p.m. Friday.A man was arrested Wednesday on a charge of first-degree murder in relation to a fatal shooting at a Marion bar on St. Patrick's Day, according to a news release from the Marion Police Department.Duval Walker, 28, was arrested by U.S. Marshals and members of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and Waterloo and Marion police departments in Waterloo, in the 900 block of Linn Street, Wednesday. He is accused of fatally shooting Cameron Barnes, 32, at Cocktails and Company, 1625 Blairs Ferry Rd., Marion.Along with the first-degree murder charge, Walker is also facing charges of possession of a firearm or offensive weapon by a felon and going armed with intent.Police were called to the bar at 11:06 p.m. March 17 on a report of shots fired. Barnes was found injured and was taken to a hospital where he died.According to reporting from the Associated Press one of the teenagers charged in the death of their Fairfield High School teacher will testify against the other defendant.Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding said during a court hearing that Jeremy Goodale, 17, has agreed to testify against Willard Noble Chaiden Miller, 17, during Miller's upcoming trial. Goodale and Miller are both charged with first-degree murder in the November 2021 death of 66-year-old Nohema Graber, their Spanish teacher at Fairfield High School. Her body was found in a Fairfield park in November 2021.
Megan Gustafson is a basketball player in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury. She was selected in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft by Dallas and played the 2019 and 2020 season with the Wings. In 2021, she spent time with the Washington Mystics and moved to Phoenix in May 2022. In college, Gustafson achieved a lot of success at the University of Iowa. In her senior year, she won the Naismith Player of the Year award in women's college basketball and was also named AP Player of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year. Her number 10 was retired by Iowa in 2020. Today on the podcast, we talk to Megan about her journey of basketball, how she handled fame and praise, and the importance of staying grounded in her walk with Christ. Iowa men's basketball has hovered from acceptable to good to pretty good for most of the season. The schedule is putting on the squeeze, but it doesn’t matter. Time for Iowa basketball to start kicking ass and taking names. Can it? Let’s see. We’re setting the bar at the NCAA Tournament. This team should be able to get there from here. It’d be a healthy if not monumental jump from last year’s 4-14 Big Ten finish. Now, do you trust it to get there? Probably not. It has to earn your trust. It just does. Football is reaching the finish line for recruiting 2019. Or the midpoint. Recruiting never actually wraps up. We talk a lot of football. We even lift the Kirk Ferentz moratorium on the next Iowa head coach, but just briefly. Thanks to Derek for the hot-take question on the Big Ten West and East. I didn’t say the Gophers would win the West. At least I hope I didn’t. I liked Scott’s take on the East. We are very much of the idea that Iowa should celebrate Megan Gustafson night and should have a plan and an announcement on a jersey retirement. Don’t half measure this, Iowa. You’ve been gifted a moment. Knock it out of the park. Don’t half measure it. We’ve seen that. It’s painful, stiff and largely unsatisfying for all involved. Be careful, actually.
