The business of music catalog acquisition has become a hot topic of discussion lately. With the sales of such song catalogs once belonging to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, Shakira, John Lennon, Ryan Tedder, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, 50 Cent, Nelly, and many more, it's become a sellers paradise. But why? We talk with music publisher Trey Bruce, who is the owner and President of Galore Entertainment, a new entertainment company that develops artists and publishing assets through exploitation & sync licensing. Emmy Award winning songwriter, Trey Bruce, moved to Nashville just in time for the 1990s Country Music boom. Trey was a rock drummer from Memphis so… what could go wrong? Luckily, as an unpublished songwriter, Trey's first demo got cut almost immediately by Shelby Lynn and was a top 15 hit so, as a result he signed his first publishing deal with MCA Music in November of 1989. During the MCA years Trey had a few minor cuts and then, his first #1 single, on Randy Travis called, “Look Heart No Hands”. After three years at MCA, in 1993, Trey co-founded a small indie publishing company, Big Tractor Music, with renowned record producer Scott Hendricks and there Trey received 13 ASCAP Awards, an Emmy Award, five #1 singles, multiple top 5 and top 10 radio hits and an Academy Of Country Music, Song Of The Year nomination. During the Tractor years Trey developed a love for coffee and long nights in the studio so he became a record producer. In 2005 Trey started a publishing/artist development joint venture with Chrysalis Music in Nashville. At Chrysalis Trey searched out new artists before anyone else had discovered them. Trey signed and developed teenagers, Charlie Worsham now on Warner Brothers, John & TJ Osborne of Brothers Osborne now on Universal Records, Chris Janson also on Warner Brothers and American Idol's 12th season runner-up, Kree Harrison. During this period Trey was writing songs with Scott Weiland, Billy Gibbons, Kerry Kurt Phillips, LeAnn Rimes, CarrieUnderwood, Katherine McPhee, Duff McKagan and Richard Marx. Trey wrote and helped build, from scratch, a catalog of more than 800 songs in 5 years, as well as cuts in the Rock format and two #1 singles in Australia and Canada. Kree Harrison is a singer, songwriter and American Idol runner up who has been laying her music foundation in Nashville since before she could legally drive. Her powerhouse vocals have been used by top artists like Kacey Musgraves and got her to the second place spot on American Idol Season 12. Her solo records have put her name on the Billboard Charts, but it’s Kree’s story of overcoming tragedy that make these accolades even more impressive. She sat down to tell Kelly about her journey from early stardom to losing both of her parents in tragic accidents. Kree talks therapy and healing and using her true gift, her voice, to help others heal the same. On Episode 149, I'm joined by singer-songwriter Kree Harrison. Harrison released the wonderful Chosen Family Tree, her latest full-length album, this past August. Harrison seamlessly blends classic country, smart pop hooks, and a hearty southern soulfulness on Family Tree. Right from the opening notes of the first song, the crystalline "Nothing in This World," it's a remindful nod to those iconic country sounds of the past--straight from the George Jones or Tammy Wynette playbook. Standouts like the gorgeous warm sway of "That's How Hearts Get Broken," the toe-tapping pop punch of "I Love the Lie," or the dark swagger of "Get Away with Anything" show Harrison's stellar ability to morph into various states, moods, and tones as effortlessly as anyone. During this one, we talk about recording Chosen Family Tree at Echo Mountain in Ashville, North Carolina, collecting and writing songs, country, soul, swamp-pop, Texas roots, navigating Nashville, and how one releases an album during 2020.This episode's presenting partner is Desert Door Texas Sotol.
