We had the pleasure of interviewing Boy Named Banjo over Zoom video!Boy Named Banjo has announced their major label debut album Dusk, due out September 29 via Mercury Records Nashville. On Dusk, the Nashville-native group explores the full emotional spectrum of the rich, eclectic sound they've honed over the last decade. Along with the announcement, the band also shares their wistful new single “Lonely In This Town."Produced by longtime collaborator Oscar Charles (Caroline Spence, Charlie Worsham), Dusk is an electrifying dose of lightning in a bottle over its nine tracks, running a gamut of late-night, fall-in-love party anthems and stripped-down meditations. Boy Named Banjo's songwriting is as incisive as ever, artfully grappling with lust and longing, hope and heartbreak. Sonically, the band's performances on the record are nothing short of exhilarating, blurring the lines between Music Row and Laurel Canyon with lush harmonies and bold cinematic arrangements. The end result is a masterfully crafted, larger-than-life major label debut from a group that continues to grow by leaps and bounds with every release.Widely beloved by loyal fans nationwide for their high-octane live shows, Boy Named Banjo will kick off their coast-to-coast Dusk Til Dawn Tour next month on September 14 in Atlanta – tickets can be found here and a full list of dates can be found below. Audiences will be treated to performances from their extensive catalog and new music from Dusk, in addition to their recent uplifting anthem “What Keeps Me Going” which earned praise from CMT, Holler, Taste of Country, Whiskey Riff and more. 2023 has already shaped up to be another banner year for the band following their Grand Ole Opry debut, a momentous milestone that was documented at People.Expertly melding an array of musical influences, the five-piece band is a fusion of contemporary country, Americana and folk-rock stacked on a foundation of bluegrass. Their self-released 2012 debut The Tanglewood Sessions helped earn the band a spot at Bonnaroo, while their 2014 follow-up, Long Story Short, led to festival slots everywhere from Hangout Fest to Dierks Bentley's Seven Peaks. After signing with Mercury Records Nashville in 2020, the following year saw the release of their genre-defying EP Circles, which landed them a performance at the historic Ryman Auditorium alongside dates supporting the likes of Kip Moore, Hank Williams, Jr., Old Crow Medicine Show, and The Cadillac Three. In 2022, Boy Named Banjo made their CMA Fest debut playing at the Ascend Amphitheatre Nighttime Concert as well as a sold-out hometown show at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl. Formed in their teens, Boy Named Banjo includes Barton Davies (banjo), Ford Garrard (bass/standing bass), Sam McCullough (drums) Willard Logan (mandolin, acoustic/electric guitar) and William Reames (acoustic guitar/harmonica).We want to hear from you! The Chris Shiflett Interview With Dino Bedrocker

Those who've been following the trajectory of modern-day guitar hero Chris Shiflett — outside of his role in FOO FIGHTERS — will already know of his musical mission to unite his SoCal rock roots and Nashville influences to create a fresh new sound altogether. In his latest installment, the longtime country-influenced-rocker called upon a couple of Nashville's finest practitioners of rock-influenced-country, Jaren Johnston (THE CADILLAC THREE) and John Osborne (BROTHERS OSBORNE),to join in on his brand new single, "Black Top White Lines". In their initial writing session, the trio kept throwing in line after line until the story was mapped out. Without spoiling the ending for anybody, Shiflett hints, "Thematically it felt like it turned a classic country trope on its head a little."Arriving on the heels of 2022's "Born & Raised" and "Long Long Year", "Black Top White Lines" picks up right where Shiflett left off; albeit a bit more amplified. The quick-tempo song opens with a wall of unison guitars and doesn't once let up. Thick stacks of different guitar tones (some of which are provided by legendary session man Tom Bukovac and uber-talented multi-instrumentalist Charlie Worsham) ride the pulsing groove provided by drums and bass with lead licks punctuating the bars between each verse. Written with Johnston and Osborne via Zoom in the middle of 2020, it wasn't until Shiflett and Johnston were working out which songs to record that they realized just how rad "Black Top White Lines" could be. "Jaren and I were going over song ideas, and it'd been a minute since we wrote it, so when we re-visited the track he was like, 'Dude you gotta record this one…It's a banger!'," remembers Shiflett. "Right away in the studio I could tell it was a bit of a left turn for me musically but that's also what I like about it.""Black Top White Lines" is the first listen from a brand new Shiflett album due out in 2023 via his new label home at Blue Élan Records, the Los Angeles-based independent label celebrating its ninth anniversary this year. Fans will hear more about the Jaren Johnston-produced LP in the coming months but can count on hearing an album that represents Shiflett's fully-realized vision of connecting L.A. to Nashville. "A big part of my inspiration to work with Jaren on this record was because I knew he'd push me out of my comfort zone into new territory," Shiflett says.Punk veteran. Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee. Americana and rock songwriter. Modern-day guitar hero. For more than 25 years, Shiflett has blurred the lines between genre and generation, balancing his full-band projects with a thriving solo career. Named "Americana's biggest rockstar" by Rolling Stone, Shiflett has played a crucial role in shaping the sound and scope of modern-day rock music as a longtime member of the FOO FIGHTERS. He's also an alum of California-based punk rock bands NO USE FOR A NAME and ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES. Shiflett's latest releases refocus his attention on a mix of country twang and rock and roll bang, showcasing the full range of his musical abilities.Shiflett, a member of Foo Fighters since 1999, will release his third solo album later this year. Lost At Sea builds a bridge between his native California and Nashville, where Shiflett has become a frequent visitor, performing on the Grand Ole Opry one minute and collaborating with Music City tastemakers like The Cadillac Three frontman Jaren Johnston and legendary producer Dave Cobb the next.Support the show

#207 - The Meteoric Rise of Catalog Sales

The business of music catalog acquisition has become a hot topic of discussion lately. With the sales of such song catalogs once belonging to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, Shakira, John Lennon, Ryan Tedder, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, 50 Cent, Nelly, and many more, it's become a sellers paradise. But why? We talk with music publisher Trey Bruce, who is the owner and President of Galore Entertainment, a new entertainment company that develops artists and publishing assets through exploitation & sync licensing.  Emmy Award winning songwriter, Trey Bruce, moved to Nashville just in time for the 1990s Country Music boom. Trey was a rock drummer from Memphis so… what could go wrong? Luckily, as an unpublished songwriter, Trey's first demo got cut almost immediately by Shelby Lynn and was a top 15 hit so, as a result he signed his first publishing deal with MCA Music in November of 1989. During the MCA years Trey had a few minor cuts and then, his first #1 single, on Randy Travis called, “Look Heart No Hands”. After three years at MCA, in 1993, Trey co-founded a small indie publishing company, Big Tractor Music, with renowned record producer Scott Hendricks and there Trey received 13 ASCAP Awards, an Emmy Award, five #1 singles, multiple top 5 and top 10 radio hits and an Academy Of Country Music, Song Of The Year nomination. During the Tractor years Trey developed a love for coffee and long nights in the studio so he became a record producer. In 2005 Trey started a publishing/artist development joint venture with Chrysalis Music in Nashville. At Chrysalis Trey searched out new artists before anyone else had discovered them. Trey signed and developed teenagers, Charlie Worsham now on Warner Brothers, John & TJ Osborne of Brothers Osborne now on Universal Records, Chris Janson also on Warner Brothers and American Idol's 12th season runner-up, Kree Harrison. During this period Trey was writing songs with Scott Weiland, Billy Gibbons, Kerry Kurt Phillips, LeAnn Rimes, CarrieUnderwood, Katherine McPhee, Duff McKagan and Richard Marx. Trey wrote and helped build, from scratch, a catalog of more than 800 songs in 5 years, as well as cuts in the Rock format and two #1 singles in Australia and Canada. Watch/share the official music video here  https://youtu.be/CXr16dro-vAOf the track, Worsham shares, “‘Half Drunk' tells the story of the first time I told my wife I loved her. I'd just been fired by my publisher and my manager had quit management that week, but I was singing that day in one of my favorite rooms in all the world, the Station Inn. Powered by Yazoo Pale Ale, applause, and a sense that this girl I was crazy about might just be more special and more permanent than the whole music industry thing, I turned to Kristen, said those three magic words, and she said ‘I love you too.' I hope this song inspires a lot of drunken making out and maybe a few last-time-saying-I-love-you-for-the-first-time moments.” Bourbons in this podcastEarly Times Bottled In Bond - 100 ProofLongbranch - 86 proofWild Turkey Rare Breed Rye - 112.2 proofDickle 8 Year Bourbon - 90 ProofDickle 9 Year Single Barrel Select - 103 Proof

Much of his success came in the country world with singles such as Rascal Flatts’ Top 10 hit “While You Loved Me,” Carrie Underwood’s “Songs Like This,” Kenny Chesney’s multi-week #1 hit “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven,” Charlie Worsham’s debut single “Could It Be,” Blake Shelton’s “Doing it to Country Songs.” and two Billy Currington chart-toppers, “Must Be Doin’ Something’ Right” and “Let Me Down Easy.” Never one to limit himself to a single genre, Marty has also collaborated with Tom Higgenson of the rock band Plain White T’s, which recorded two of his songs, and has had his compositions recorded by everyone from Joe Cocker, who had an international #1 with Marty’s “Fire It Up,” to Cho Yong Pil, a South Korean superstar who had a multi-week #1 with Marty’s song “Bounce.” In addition to his writing, Marty is the co-founder of Songtown, a creative community of aspiring writers that provides blog posts, webinars, podcasts, and even books, including two co-authored by Marty: Song Building: Mastering Lyric Writing, and The Songwriter’s Guide to Mastering Co-Writing.

Surviving the Music Industry

ACM Guitarist of the Year and Americana Musician of the Year, a new album called West, and becoming an American citizen with Jedd Hughes.  We finally meet up with Jedd after a reschedule because he had to take his Citizenship Test. We sit down to talk sobriety, beating the music school system, and rediscovering your identity after life's turbulent twist and turns.   The story of Jedd is one of redemption, tests, and second chances. Originally from Quorn, Australia, Jedd made the move to America to study music at Levelland Texas' South Plains College. As fate would have it, there he met Terry McBride (of Terry McBride and The Ride) that took an interest in Jedd's talent. A talent of songwriting and musicianship based from artists like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings––and his older brother loved Led Zeppelin and 90s grunge. Terry encouraged Jedd to move to Nashville and soon Jedd went with the sole goal to keep working so he could stay in America. Through connections and persistence, he landed an audition with Patty Loveless which inevitably put him in the circles of Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, Vince Gill, Ryan Bingham, Sarah Jarosz, the late Guy Clark, Jim Lauderdale, Brandy Clark, and more. Many recognized Jedd's unique voice and MCA was quick to sign him to a recording contract, but again as fate would have it. The label was sold and as the pattern would have it. When a label is bought is sold, artists are dropped. Jedd was dropped just one month after his debut album, Transcontinental, in 2004. Still a fellow collaborator in the Nashville scene, Jedd was able to continue working as a session guitarist and you can hear him today on records by Dierks Bently, Rodney Crowell, Charles Kelly, Charlie Worsham, and more. But life still was turbulent. Now sober for 3 years, at this point alcohol and substance abuse was a way of coping and filling a void where the industry left a hole to be filled. After finding help and a new artistic direction Jedd finds life fulfilled with family and even new music.    In our conversation, we tackle sobriety, mental health, and when life honestly gives you lemons. We even take a bit to understand what it takes to become an American citizen. Not to mention we take a look at Jedd's latest release, West. West is filled with cinematic landscapes that take you down a hole of despair, restlessness, and even redemptive points of the musical journey. The album is out now and can be streamed on all platforms. For everything else visit  and follow him @jedd_hughes.

In Nashville, the greatest guitar town in the world, Guthrie Trapp is at the top of the mountain. He can range across every style, improvise with endless invention and subtlety. He can shred or twang or drift elegantly. And most of the time, he's a sideman and studio player. A player in demand for being able to serve and enhance a song and do no more than what's called for. But he's also a mind-bending solo artist. And his second LP as a leader and composer came out this spring. It's called Life After Dark. Trapp has worked with Patty Loveless, Dolly Parton, Jerry Douglas, Garth Brooks, Rosanne Cash and many other greats. Currently he tours with John Oates in his solo configuration. But Guthrie's  work as a leader ranks up there with the best guitar music being made today. For years he's led his own small group at a variety of Nashville venues, where he can really stretch out, refine his originals, indulge in some favorite old songs. He put out his first solo album in 2012, called Pick Peace, and it's an entirely instrumental project. This new one mingles instrumentals with guest aritists taking star turns on vocals - Jimmy Hall sings the blues. Charlie Worsham and Vince Gill sing country classics. Bekka Bramblett offers a stunning take on “I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry.” It shows how much reverence he has among his peers in music city. I like what acoustic Americana star tim O'Brien says about Guthrie. “He'll blow you away but he'll never wear you out.”

BRANDY CLARK is part of a new vanguard in country music one that tips a hat to tradition, while not eschewing its evolution. For Clark, the dream she harbored in her small hometown of Morton, Washington, was to be a country singer. Sure, once she moved to Nashville, she had successful cuts as a songwriter [The Band Perry's "Better Dig Two," Miranda Lambert's "Mama's Broken Heart," and Kacey Musgraves' "Follow Your Arrow" which won the CMA Song of the Year Award in 2014], but being an artist in her own right was a dream she had stopped dreaming until three years ago when her first album, the stunning 12 Stories, debuted and went on to become a GRAMMY- and CMA-nominated release that topped a myriad of "Best Albums of 2013. Big Day in a Small Town is the new album from this critically acclaimed songwriter and four-time GRAMMY nominee. CHARLIE WORSHAM is widely acclaimed within the Nashville community and is set for a breakthrough year with the release of his highly anticipated sophomore album, Beginning of Things. Worsha, is a ridiculously talented multi-instrumentalist and student of great songs. Hes developed a unique modern country sound built around the traditional acoustic instruments he grew up on. From the Opry at age twelve to the local Missionary Baptist Church to the back-road blues joints he wasn't even supposed to know about, much less play in, wherever he found a stage, he played. For the last two years, he's divided his time between writing songs, being an in-demand studio musician for other artists and playing his music live sharing stages across the country with Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert and others. Before Nashville, I’d never lived in a place where part of the regular conversation and social/cultural goings on was to figure out the essence of that place and to take active steps to get closer to its heart and soul. There was never a big emphasis on what does it mean to be from Chicago or Washington DC or Durham, NC, three of my other home bases. There is such a conversation about New Orleans and Austin. Music cities are like this. But I wonder if there’s any place more probative of its place-ness than Nashville. What I know is that it’s a healthy conversation to have and one that we are good at cultivating. When we partner with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum as we did this Wednesday, our city’s essence comes into tighter focus. We’re elevated in our attention and admiration. We heard a distillation of what it means to be a Nashville Cat. Can you sing? Write? Play? Cooperate? We know this when we hear it. We’re cat people and we’re into cat power.

It might be the most frustrating thing about Nashville. Periodically, a guy will emerge who's obviously on par with the great country icons. This guy will write, sing and play guitar as if ordained. Everyone in town testify to his gifts. But this guy will spend years getting better instead of bigger. He will tend to his art while the industry struggles to find a box for him. He will be seen by some as too country for country radio and too country radio for Americana. I'm not alone in seeing that guy in the remarkable Charlie Worsham. The Mississippi reared guitar slinger, songwriter and singer has just released his second album, with high hopes and stratospheric industry respect.
