Last year, Texas was a 17-point favorite at Texas Tech in both teams' Big 12 opener, and the Longhorns needed minor miracles to overcome a 15-point deficit in the last 3:13 to escape Lubbock with a 63-56 overtime victory. Joining us this week on The Flagship Podcast to preview the 2021 Big 12 opener between the Longhorns and Red Raiders is Jarret Johnson, publisher of InsideTheRedRaiders.com, who said Tech coach Matt Wells "mentions that game against Texas last year a lot" to his team. Gone is Tech quarterback Alan Bowman - replaced by 6-foot-5, 230-pound Oregon transfer Tyler Shough. Johnson explains why Shough is off to an up-and-down start for the Red Raiders. Tech running back SaRodorick Thompson, who ripped off a 75-yard touchdown run against Texas last season, is returning from injury. But Johnson tells you why Tech hasn't missed Thompson thanks to freshman running back Tahj Brooks, who is averaging 8.1 yards per carry. Johnson talks about how Tech's 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore receiver Erik Ezukanma, who had seven catches for 91 yards and a touchdown against Texas last season, has only gotten better. Tech is 3-0 after victories against Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Florida International and trailed early in all three games. The Red Raiders needed a fourth-and-goal pass breakup on the last play of he game against FCS opponent SFA to hold on to a 28-22 victory. Johnson says because of the competition, it's hard to tell just how strong Tech's 3-0 start really is. Johnson also says Tech's offensive line has been inconsistent and really struggled against SFA. Johnson talks about the Tech defense, which he says has a strong front seven and has been stout against the run but might be vulnerable in the secondary. Johnson tells you how Tech coach Matt Wells, who found linebacker Colin Schooler (brother of Texas safety Brenden Schooler) in the transfer portal last year, went to the transfer portal again in 2021 and found gold (in addition to QB Shough).  Johnson also talks about Wells' job security after going 4-8 and 4-6 in his first two seasons in Lubbock. How do Tech fans view Texas now that the Longhorns have said they're leaving the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference? Johnson tells you and gives you his prediction for how Saturday's game at 11 am CT (on ABC) at Royal-Memorial Stadium plays out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Before there was Tim Tebow, there was Danny Wuerffel. In the mid-90's, playing for Coach Steve Spurrier, it was Wuerffel who led the Florida Gators to their first college football National Championship in school history, while also leading the nation in TD passes two straight seasons. And oh by the way, he also won a Heisman Trophy. Similar to Tim Tebow, Wuerffel is a also devout Christian, but perhaps that's where the similarities end. Wuerffel was more low-key and his time in the limelight came before the explosion of social media. Meanwhile, before Wuerffel's journeyman pro career ended, he started working for a non-profit in New Orleans called Desire Street Ministries, which had several programs to help those in impoverished areas get more opportunities. As the organization was recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Wuerffel took over as executive director. He has since moved Desire Street Ministries to Atlanta and expanded its reach to help non-profits already trying to do good work in inner-cities. Despite a busy schedule, Wuerffel took some time out to talk about several subjects, including his time playing QB in the SEC under the old ball coach, that 1994 SEC Championship Game classic, why he thinks Tim Tebow has become such a polarizing figure and how handled being a successful QB in the high-profile Southeastern Conference.

ESPN college football radio/TV analyst Ian Fitzsimmons, who co-hosts Freddie and Fitzsimmons (with Freddie Coleman) weeknights on ESPN Radio, joins The Flagship Podcast for an exclusive interview this week to talk ball!! Fitzsimmons, who got his start in radio in Alabama in the 1990s and knows the Southeastern Conference inside and out, attended Big 12 football media days and spent some one-on-one time with Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, running back Bijan Robinson and defensive tackle Keondre Coburn. "My No. 1 preseason man crush is Bijan Robinson," Fitzsimmons told the Flagship Podcast before detailing how Robinson's close relationship with his grandfather, who served on officiating crews in the Pac-10 and Pac-12, led to Robinson idolizing Reggie Bush.  Fitzsimmons talks about why Texas fans should really like Sarkisian's coaching staff and if Fitzsimmons thinks Sark is comfortable being back in the glare of coaching one of the nation's top brands in college football. Fitzsimmons, like our own Chip Brown at Horns247, says the first two games of the season for the Longhorns - at home against Louisiana and at Arkansas - are going to be difficult challenges for UT that will serve as a big barometer for Texas' entire season. "A 2-0 start for the Horns would provide real momentum for Sarkisian's team in year one, because those games won't be easy," Fitzsimmons said. Of course, Fitzsimmons, who used to host a show on JOX Radio in Birmingham, Ala., (when Paul Finebaum was still at JOX) called The Cheap Seats, weighs in on Texas and Oklahoma accepting invitations to the SEC and how it will impact this season and beyond. Then, Brown and Fitzsimmons get into a fascinating, in-depth conversation about what could be next in terms of realignment for the remaining eight schools in the Big 12 - and across college athletics - that you don't want to miss. As Brown and Fitzsimmons wrap things up, the conversation turns back to the 2021 season and how Fitzsimmons sees the Big 12 playing out, including his contenders and pretenders. "The Big 12 is wide open," Fitzsimmons said before offering a surprise team to keep an eye on. In this week's interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, Berry Tramel, longtime columnist for the Oklahoman, shares his thoughts on the decisions of Texas and Oklahoma to leave the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference. Tramel talks about Oklahoma's attempts to get into the SEC previously under then-president David Boren and how the Sooners have finally made the move under new OU president Joseph Harroz, Jr. Tramel discusses the differences between Harroz and Boren.  What were the driving forces behind Oklahoma's move? Tramel weighs in. Tramel talks about the how former Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops wanted nothing to do with the SEC in the past and how having Texas on board "made things a lot easier." Tramel wonders how Texas and Oklahoma will handle moving from a league where they had an inordinate say in decisions to a "strong central government" in the SEC under commissioner Greg Sankey. Tramel talks about how recruiting might have to change now that Texas and Oklahoma are joining "the pirate ship" in the SEC. ESPN is clearly involved with Texas and OU's decisions, Tramel said. What isn't clear is if ESPN is involved in tearing down the rest of the BIg 12, Tramel said. Tramel talks about the likelihood of Texas and Oklahoma getting out of the Big 12 as soon as possible. Tramel also weighs on what's next for Oklahoma State in terms of the Cowboys' likely landing spot. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this week's interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, we talk to Lance Taylor, longtime radio voice in Birmingham, Ala., who can now be heard from 9 am to 1 pm CT live at nextroundlive.com, about the likelihood that Texas and Oklahoma are headed to the Southeastern Conference. Taylor admits he was shocked at the initial news and discusses what happened when he interviewed SEC commissioner Greg Sankey at SEC media days last week - right after the news broke about Texas and OU possibly moving to the SEC. Taylor talks about where he sees Texas fitting into the SEC both from a football program standpoint and from a political standpoint. How much influence does Alabama have in the SEC? Taylor talks about that as well as who he sees as the other power brokers in the SEC. Taylor talks about the governing style of SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and also how Texas A&M is viewed in the conference. Speaking of Texas A&M, Taylor discusses where he sees the Aggies finishing in the SEC this year after A&M nearly cracked the College Football Playoff last season. Taylor, who also provides sports picks to subscribers at LancesLock.com, gives his breakdown and early prediction for Texas' 2021 road trip into the SEC - at Arkansas on Sept. 11. Arkansas, by the way, was picked to finish last in the SEC West by the SEC media, but will be amped to face former longtime rival Texas - meaning the Longhorns have to avoid any propensity to take the Razorbacks lightly. We get Taylor's thoughts on how he sees the rest of the SEC finishing in 2021, including how former Texans coach Bill O'Brien is fitting in as Steve Sarkisian's replacement as Bama offensive coordinator. Taylor also gives his take on what to expect from Sarkisian as a first-year head coach at Texas after covering Sark at Alabama. We talk to Taylor about how Texas basketball under first-year coach Chris Beard would fit into the SEC and what he thinks the rest of the Big 12 should do without Texas and Oklahoma. Guest host Ben Lyons and the guys kick off the hour reacting to the news that Oklahoma and Texas are reportedly close to bolting the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference.   Ben and the guys marvel at the sheer spectacle of the Buccaneers new Super Bowl rings which are roughly the size of a small planetoid.   The Athletic's Senior College Football Writer Andy Staples tells Ben what the benefits and pitfalls are of the Sooners and Longhorns joining the SEC and how it would change the rest of the CFB landscape, which school has the best tailgate atmosphere in the country, his early Heisman Trophy watch list, and why this might be Jim Harbaugh's last year coaching Michigan.     The guys wrap up the hour revisiting the Bucs INSANE Super Bowl rings and recounting TJ's birthday lunch and if they would be able to last a month on the TB12 diet. With Texas and Oklahoma set to leave the Big 12, is this the beginning of the end for the Big 12 Conference? On Friday's emergency edition of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes return with the latest on Texas and Oklahoma's decision to look for other conference options as the two schools intend to inform the Big 12 officials of the decision to not renew the league's grant of rights, which expires in 2025. The Flagship delivers the latest from Horns247 sources who confirmed that the Sooners and Longhorns plan to tell the Big 12 their intentions to leave the league on Monday, which will open the door for the SEC to officially express interest in adding the two historic programs to the Southeastern Conference. Chip and Taylor discuss all of the possibilities that Texas and Oklahoma could face, including if there are talks of the two schools joining any other league outside of the SEC or possibly looking at the independent route, the timeline of when the departure could occur, what, if any, forces could step in and halt this conference expansion from a state level and much, much more. With Texas and Oklahoma's intended departure potentially reshaping the landscape of college sports, Texas and all college football fans won't want to miss this emergency episode of The Flagship Podcast! Alabama or Georgia? That's the question most of the media members who cover the SEC will face when they submit their conference predictions next week at SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama. The predictions for West and East division champions don't carry much intrigue. Almost certainly, Nick Saban's Crimson Tide will be the selection in the West, while Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs will hold the vote in the East. But the pick for SEC champion could be spicy.
