Texas Homegrown Music with Maylee Thomas

Jack Barksdale inspires me about the next generations of music made , and especially here in Texas. A 17 yr. old folk/Americana singer/songwriter Jack started performing original music at the age of nine and has already shared the stage with Wynonna Judd, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Junior Brown, John Fullbright, and Hayes . He's definitely an “old soul” that paints his way into your mind with his prolific lyrics. He's headlining the inaugural Renegade Revival Music Fest May 17th at the Georgetown Palace Theater. And proceeds benefit HAAM of Austin helping musicians with healthcare.   Listen this week to our interview and you too will be inspired by this young Troubadour.   Originally aired 05/04/2025 on 95.3 FM KHYI the Range in Dallas, TX.

Inspired by her father Rey's courageous journey from Cuba to America and her brother Rey's childhood musical rivalry, Angie chose her stage name as a tribute to the two men who shaped her dreams. Her musical journey began early, leading to a breakthrough appearance on Telemundo's "La Voz Kids," where she reached the Top 18. This first-generation Cuban-American found her unique voice in country music, influenced by time spent on her grandparents' farm where she discovered the shared values of family, God, and love between her Latin heritage and country music. Now based in Nashville for the past two years, Angie has carved out her own path, performing several nights weekly on Broadway and opening for country stars such as Wynonna Judd, Scotty McCreery and Tanya Tucker, while infusing Latin energy into her country originals.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

We talk with Alice Wallace on this episode about her recent release “Here I Am,” (released June 2024) imposter syndrome, and the endless way to write a song.     Four years ago, Alice moved to Nashville after more than a decade in southern California, and Here I Am is the first of her albums to be recorded in true Music City style, backed by alineup of world-class musicians and recorded in two whirlwind days with no rehearsal. Produced by Nick Buda (Taylor Swift, Martina McBride, Dolly Parton), the album features some of the most talented musicians Music City has to offer. In addition to Nick Buda on drums, the record features GRAMMY-winning guitarist Kenny Greenberg (Willie Nelson, Wynonna Judd, Hayes Carll), bassist Ted Pecchio (Doyle Bramhall II, Susan Tedeschi), and keyboardist Jimmy Wallace (The Wallflowers).   “This is an album about reclaiming myself–as an artist, as a woman, and as a person navigating a world that is beautiful and confusing and harsh,” she says. Since releasing her last LP, her life has changed immensely - a cross-country move, a career unexpectedly halted in 2020, falling in lovemore deeply than before, and being heartbroken more painfully than she ever knew she could be. “All of those changes gave me a chance to examine myself in ways I never had. This album covers a spectrum of emotion I haven't been brave enough to share on an album before,” she continues. “This album is me.”   Check Alice out here—  Website: https://www.alicewallacemusic.com  IG: Alicewallacemusic  Facebook: Alice Wallace

In 2022, seven years after surviving a brain aneurysm that left her unable to sing or even speak, Joni Mitchell appeared onstage at the Newport Folk Festival. Singing alongside her were her supportive — and emotional — musician friends, including Brandi Carlile, Marcus Mumford, Wynonna Judd and Annie Lennox. Our critic Wesley Morris had his doubts. What was really happening here? Did Joni Mitchell even want this? Or were her younger adoring musician fans propping her up for their own reasons? When he learned this fall that Joni would be appearing onstage again, at the Hollywood Bowl, he bought a ticket to see for himself. On today's episode, Wesley talks with his editor Sasha Weiss about the concert, and what it's like to experience an 80-year-old in full command of her meaning.Guest: Wesley Morris, a critic at large for The New York Times.Sasha Weiss, the deputy editor of the The New York Times Magazine. Background reading: 50 Reasons to Love Joni Mitchell's “Blue”For more information on today's episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily. Justin is joined by John Michael Heath from EAP Society for a thorough examination of the 2008 album "Christmas Duets" which paired Elvis' original vocal tracks from 1957 and 1971 with 1:1 re-creations of the backing tracks and some of the biggest female entertainers in the field of country music at the time: Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Wynonna Judd, Gretchen Wilson and others, as well as bringing in a couple entertainers Elvis himself had been a fan of in the 70s: Olivia Newton-John and Anne Murray.  Often written off as a mere cash-grab, the duo discuss the careers of the album's producers, the talented studio band brought in to replicate the original arrangements, and several other guests that reveal a more nuanced picture of a likely genuine tribute to Elvis that ended up trying to play things too safe and went awry in the process - and the guys ponder what makes artificial duets work or flop. They also discuss the exciting news about Peter Guralnick's upcoming book, now officially confirmed as "The Colonel and the King," releasing August 5, 2025.  For Song of the Week, John's selection of "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago," the traditional folk song which Elvis used to link the 1970 concept album "Elvis Country," and the version by Brownie McGhee that Elvis is known to have taken inspiration from, suddenly opens doors that lead to the histories behind numerous other Elvis recordings that will blow you mind, including (but not limited to) our other Song of the Week, "Adam and Evil" from "Spinout." Four years ago, Alice Wallace moved to Nashville after more than a decade in southern California, and 'Here I Am' is the first of her albums to be recorded in true Music City style, backed by a lineup of world-class musicians and recorded in two whirlwind days with no rehearsal. The album's title hints at her deeply personal, confessional songwriting style, one that invites the listener to gaze at her beating heart as each intimate secret pours out, propelled by a powerful, expressive delivery that marks her as one of the true vocal talents of her generation.  Topics discussed include empathy in songwriting, the breakthrough of pursuing music full-time, the move to Nashville, recording in the snow, and more. ______________ This episode is brought to you by Magic Mind. Today's guest makes me feel a little bit country AND a little bit rock and roll. Welcome singer/songwriter Pamela McNeill to the podcast. She has accomplished so much in her career. But it all started in Winona, MN. She talks to me about the music scene there and what event set her mind on being a musician. She talks about some unusual things about her like being a massive fan of Rush, working as a clown at the Ground Round restaurant and how that led to her first real musical job. Soon enough she was playing cover bands, which led to a gig with the legendary Lamont Cranston, where she got a real education in the music business. That led to a gig opening for the one and only Etta James! But a serious relationship led her to the UK where she entered the orbit of the man himself…Rick Astley, back in his first heyday. That led to a bit of karmic retribution for one particular member of Bananarama.  And all the while, she's writing her own music. She wrote Yanni's first lyrical song, wrote for Wynonna Judd, wrote with Pam Tillis, and many others. And when she finally made her own albums, she blew it out of the water. She has been releasing music steadily since 1998 and has a new EP out called Wave After Wave on Farm To Label records. Think Fleetwood Mac playing country music and you start to get a feel for it. In this episode of Seeing Them Live, hosts Charles and Doug welcome Jim, known as the Podcast Sherpa and host of Too Many Podcasts, a podcast dedicated to exploring other podcasts. Jim shares his unique experiences attending various concerts, beginning with his first concert in 1980, where he saw The Police at Madison Square Garden during their Zenyatta Mondatta tour. He reminisces about the electrifying atmosphere and how the concert left a lasting impression on him as a high school student. The discussion also touches on other memorable shows, including Tina Turner's powerful performance as the opening act for Lionel Richie in 1984, where her high-energy stage presence captivated the audience. Jim also recalls seeing Elton John at Madison Square Garden during the Leather Jackets tour in 1986 and dispels a rumor about the singer allegedly assaulting a fan. He goes on to describe the experience of attending Billy Joel's record-setting 12 Gardens residency at Madison Square Garden, which also happened to be his wife's first concert, highlighting the shared joy of live music. The conversation takes a humorous turn as Jim recounts some lighter concert memories, including a prank involving "pre-concert mooing" at a Joan Jett concert in 1983 and a surprising encounter at a Samantha Fox show in 1989. Charles and Doug also share their own concert anecdotes, with Doug emphasizing the consistent quality of Billy Joel's performances and Charles recalling a chaotic food fight during a Joan Jett set at a Police concert. The episode is filled with entertaining stories and insights, reflecting the hosts' and guest's deep appreciation for live music and the unforgettable moments that concerts create.BANDS: Bare Naked Ladies, Billy Joel, Clint Black, Coolio, Elton John, Joan Jett, Lionel Richie, Prince, Samantha Fox, Sheila E, The Police, Tina Turner, Wynonna Judd.VENUES:  Jones Beach, Madison Square Garden, Manchester Apollo, Orpheum Capitol Theater, The Marquee Club.  PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/SeeingThemLivePlease help us defer the cost of producing this podcast by making a donation on Patreon.WEBSITE:https://seeingthemlive.com/Visit the Seeing Them Live website for bonus materials including the show blog, resource links for concert buffs, photos, materials related to our episodes, and our Ticket Stub Museum.INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/seeingthemlive/FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550090670708

On this episode Tim Batts & Josh Williams talk about bluegrass news, Rhonda Vincent's new single, Wagon Wheel, and Josh's love/hate relationship of the song. Josh also plays the classic Jerry Reed song called The Likes of Me. Then they talk to bluegrass gospel singer and former band leader for Lee Greenwood, Eric Horner. Music has always been a major part of Eric Horner's life. Born and raised in Paducah KY, he grew up with a guitar in his hands playing and singing Gospel music all over Western KY, Southern IL and Southeast MO. Eric's first big musical influence was a young man by the name of Steven Curtis Chapman. The two met when Steven became Eric's first guitar teacher in the 6th grade. Learning the “Chapman Method” of guitar playing prepared Eric well for what the Lord had in store down the road.Eric moved to Nashville TN at the age of 19 to pursue his dream of becoming a professional songwriter and musician. It didn't take long for the doors to open and over the next 17 years Eric toured the world playing with such artists as Lee Greenwood, Shania Twain, Wynonna Judd and Brad Paisley. In 2002, all of that changed. Eric began to feel a call on his life to return to his Gospel music roots and to use his talents for a higher purpose. Thanks to our sponsors.
