Interview by Kris PetersHillbilly Vegas' dynamic sound caught the ears of an independent label in Nashville in 2011, and their first album Ringo Manor was released and sold more than 10,000 copies – driven by the hit single Little Miss Rough and Tumble. The band has gone onto chart five songs on Billboard's Rock charts, including Let It Ride – which remained on the chart for 13 weeks and reached #10, Feels Good, High Time For A Good Time, Hell To Pay, Two GunTown, and fan favorite Shake It Like A Hillbilly. The band has earned a reputation for rousing live shows-bringing a loud, party-like atmosphere that is all-inclusive.They've shown they have a broad appeal across different genres, pleasing crowds while performing shows with rockers Blackberry Smoke, The Kentucky Headhunters, Wolfsbane and Ted Nugent; along with country icons Alabama, Travis Tritt, Blake Shelton, and Wynonna Judd. Hillbilly Vegas has played before huge crowds at NASCA Revents, as well as many major bike rallies, including the legendary annual Sturgis Motorcycle rally. They have a strong UK following, and have played the Maid of Stone and Steelhouse festivals. Now, Hillbilly Vegas are set to raise the stakes even higher with the release of their new album A La Mode, slated for release this Friday, May 8. With everything you love about Hillbilly Vegas and fresh characteristics that expand their sound even further, A La Mode epitomises the rock and roll spirit unlike anything you have heard in recent memory.HEAVY sat down with vocalist and original member Steve Harris to find out more, starting by asking how he is feeling about the release."We feel good about it," he enthused. "We like what we've done. The name A La Mode is a silly name, but it's a fun name. We hope that everybody enjoys it as much as we enjoyed doing it."We ask Steve to dive deeper into the musical side of the album."Well, I wish I could say there's a bunch of deep meaning in it," he smiled, "but we just write songs and when I hear the music that the guys start writing, I just... Sometimes it tells a story, sometimes it paints a picture, and then I start writing from there. I do a lot of observational stuff, and people I know are just things I've seen, and there's a lot of things on there. There's a good story in every song, even the silly ones, and we hope everybody finds their story in our story."In the full interview we covered Hillbilly Vegas' new album A La Mode, its musical character, notable collaborations, and upcoming touring plans. Steve introduced the band lineup and described the record as a mix of ballads, heavy rockers, country, and boogie-woogie, explaining the title reflects the idea that “everything's better with ice cream” rather than any title track. He also highlighted the single Mr. Midnight, noting Paul Rodgers contributed vocals, appears in the song and video, and was praised as a defining rock voice and a generous collaborator. The conversation then reviewed the band's origins and early Nashville experience, with Steve saying the Nashville songwriting-factory environment conflicted with their broader rock-and-roll approach. He recounted how their first radio play led to a Nashville record deal. Steve also announced a U.S. summer tour planned for June–August, the band's first U.S. tour in three years, and noted several of their top streaming cities are in Australia and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Moonlight Mile proudly and intentionally is a reality check for mainstream country and fedora-wearing folk country hipster posers alike. Moonlight Mile is a voice for those many impoverished and destitute in rural Appalachia, gripped by the sting of addiction, brow-beaten by fanatical religiosity, and oppressed by fascist regimes. An Americana bluegrass band from Sandy Hook, Kentucky, they're forging a sound that blends Appalachi-an roots with modern storytelling and heartfelt grit. Formed in 2021 and fronted by songwriter and vocalist Jonathan Pennington, the group draws on the deep musical heritage of Eastern Kentucky while embracing a wide range of influences—from traditional bluegrass harmonies to the alternative rock and psychedelic sounds that shaped Pennington's upbringing.Born of long summer evenings and back-road reflections, Moonlight Mile's music speaks to life in rural Appalachia: the beauty and struggle, the pride and pain. They write with an honest voice and a sense of purpose, tackling themes like community, hardship, and resilience with songs that feel both personal and universal. Their work has shared stages with artists across the Americana and country spectrum, including Wynonna Judd, Dwight Yoakam, The Infamous Stringdusters, and 49 Winchester—a testament to the band's wide appeal and deep musical roots. With releases that include the Kentucky Bourbon EP and tracks like “Honey,” Moonlight Mile showcases rich instrumentation—banjo, fiddle, and guitar weaving through stories caught between past and present. Their first full-length album captivates listeners with authentic narratives grounded in the landscapes and legacies of Appalachia.Whether on festival stages or intimate venues, Moonlight Mile brings a fresh voice to Kentucky's storied musical tradition—one that honors the past while charting a course into the future of Americana and blue-grass.

That being said...there are a few of you, and you probably know who you are, who should never set foot in a delivery room. Recently, my nephews son was one of the later, who upon entering the delivery room was asked to sit on a chair in the back of the room, against the wall, Where, after viewing one of the final contractions promptly lost his breakfast, then... passed out! Thus!! the re-birth... if you will, of a song I originally recorded in the 90's for a friend of mine. And now,.. in 2026 for the rest of you to enjoy. Don and Dude keep the “I Love the 80s” tour rolling into 1984, when country music drifted back toward rootsy storytelling while heavy metal hit MTV in full glam mode. One of us spins a mother–daughter country debut rooted in acoustic instruments, Appalachian harmonies, and front‑porch intimacy, while the other cranks a Sunset Strip glam‑metal breakthrough of twin‑guitar riffs and big, arena‑ready hooks. Together, the albums show how 1984's country and metal both chased the mainstream yet stayed grounded in specific worlds: Kentucky kitchens and family conversations on one side, Hollywood alleys and neon‑lit clubs on the other. The AlbumsThe Judds – Why Not Me (1984) Naomi and Wynonna Judd's debut full‑length turns years of hard knocks and Nashville hustling into a lean set of neotraditional country songs that feel both radio‑ready and personal. Producer Brent Maher keeps the sound warm and spare, letting their harmonies carry stories of underdog longing, steady devotion, and working‑woman joy that helped nudge country back toward front‑porch intimacy.Ratt – Out of the Cellar (1984) Ratt's major‑label debut is a hook‑packed glam‑metal statement, mixing Sunset Strip grit with big choruses and Beau Hill's punchy production. Powered by Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby's dual guitars and Stephen Pearcy's raspy sneer, it turned “Round and Round” into an MTV staple and helped lock in the sound and look of mid‑80s glam metal.Diggin' AlbumsMegadeth – Megadeth (2026) Billed as their final studio album, this set folds classic Megadeth riffage into more reflective songs about age, legacy, and closing a long thrash chapter.Tina Turner – Private Dancer (1984) A towering comeback that blends rock grit, pop hooks, and R&B drama, anchored by a run of hits and Tina's mix of scars, power, and polish.PVA – No More Like This (2026) The London trio's second album pushes their dance‑punk into more tactile, exploratory territory, blurring club, bedroom, and art‑school energies.Squeeze – Trixies (2026) Squeeze finally cut songs first written in 1974, turning old cassette‑era ideas into a nightclub‑set concept piece full of wry, grown‑up pop storytelling.Follow & Support Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“This was a music I had never heard. With every song she reminds us where the genre has been, and where it's headed next. After facing a frightening health scare, country singer-songwriter Shari Rowe turned to music for strength. Her upcoming single, “Too Good To Go,” began as a poem written the night she was told she might have Multiple Myeloma, a form of blood cancer. What started as fear turned into gratitude, transforming into one of her most personal and powerful songs to date. Weeks later, doctors confirmed a rare but non-life-threatening autoimmune condition, but the song remains a heartfelt reminder that life is, indeed, too good to go.“I love that I've got so much to lose — that line is the heartbeat of the song.” Shari Rowe ****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. I've been around of while.  I've seen and heard hundreds, if not thousands, of live music performances.  Everything from my first concert in 1965 for The Righteous Brothers in St. Louis  to Loretta Lynn at the Ryman Auditorium inNashville, Tennessee. I've been present in locked fado clubs in Lisbon and Porto, Portugal witnessing some of the most profound and emotional music ever performed.    I've sat mere steps away from Guy Clark and Verlon Thompson, Rodney Crowell, Bonnie Raitt, John Fullbright, Steve Earle…. On and on.  I know myself to have been in the presence of folks at the pinnacle of so-called American Roots Music. I felt no less inspired and awed on a Monday night in KansasCity with about 50 other folks listening to an 18 year old lyrical master from Ft. Worth Texas and his partner in music for the evening, Abe Partridge of Mobile, Alabama.Jack started performing original songs at age nine and hasshared the stage with artists like Ray Wylie Hubbard and Wynonna Judd. His mature and heart wrenching lyrics, soulful voice and master guitar skills  pay homage to country music and blues influences. Inspired by legends like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Johnny Cash, yet with a voice and point of view all his own, Jack is on track to have career thatwill only mature and flourish in the coming decades.  Do not miss an opportunity to see and support him.We had a bumpy start trying to make the phone connection for this conversation but we finally got it together.  Enjoy my first interview with Jack Barksdale…. In recent years, Tami Neilson has been learning to carry both great joy and great sorrow simultaneously. The New Zealand-based, Canada-born powerhouse's new album, 'Neon Cowgirl,' is named after the towering electric figure on a sign that's overlooked Broadway in Nashville, watching over Tami's career since she was 16 years old. The songs were born from a five-month family road trip combined with a major musical tour that would allow Tami the once-in-a-lifetime chance to really give it her all with her career. It was the chance for her children to experience what her life was like at their age, when she toured the country with her family's band, led by her eccentric and wildly lovable dreamer-father, Ron Neilson. Before she got the chance to hit the road for that trip, Tami landed in the ICU with sepsis and nearly lost her life. She blessedly recovered, but found that all her priorities centered around trip/tour had changed. In our Basic Folk conversation, we talk about the songs on 'Neon Cowgirl,' her dear friendship and collaborations with Willie Nelson, and Tami's exciting performances at the Grand Ole Opry. One of the songs on 'Neon Cowgirl,' "Keep On," was inspired by a cosmic conversation she had with Wynonna Judd. Judd, to her surprise, quoted the same exact phrase – "Keep on, keep on, keep on” – that Tami's late father had written in one of her most cherished letters. We also talk a lot about her brother, Jay Neilson. For all of her career and life, Jay has been by her side as her guitarist, co-writer, and musical partner. Last July, Jay suffered a rare and debilitating brain injury that he is still recovering from. Tami and Jay have not been able to perform together since that injury. She shares what it's been like to be without Jay and how it's been for him to be so public about his condition.Tami Neilson and I first connected during the pandemic. She was a guest on the podcast after she released her 2020 album, 'Chickaboom!' Since then, I have loved following her career, listening to her new music, and experiencing her highs and lows. Now based in Nashville for the past two years, Angie has carved out her own path, performing several nights weekly on Broadway and opening for country stars such as Wynonna Judd, Scotty McCreery and Tanya Tucker, while infusing Latin energy into her country originals.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

When Wynonna‘s PR team reached out to me for a possible interview slot, I didn't waste any time requesting a spot! Wynonna is one of the strongest persevering women in the music industry. I wish our visit could have been so much longer, but I was so honored to be part of her interview schedule. She still managed to be quite intimate with her answers, including time singing with The Judds, and how much she misses her mother. Wynonna is appearing August 22nd at Boise's Western Idaho Fair! I love interviewing people. There's something so exciting about watching that phone … The post INTERVIEW WITH WYNONNA JUDD appeared first on She Likes To Go Slow.

Texas Homegrown Music with Maylee Thomas

Jack Barksdale inspires me about the next generations of music made , and especially here in Texas. A 17 yr. old folk/Americana singer/songwriter Jack started performing original music at the age of nine and has already shared the stage with Wynonna Judd, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Junior Brown, John Fullbright, and Hayes . He's definitely an “old soul” that paints his way into your mind with his prolific lyrics. He's headlining the inaugural Renegade Revival Music Fest May 17th at the Georgetown Palace Theater. And proceeds benefit HAAM of Austin helping musicians with healthcare.   Listen this week to our interview and you too will be inspired by this young Troubadour.   Originally aired 05/04/2025 on 95.3 FM KHYI the Range in Dallas, TX.

In 2022, seven years after surviving a brain aneurysm that left her unable to sing or even speak, Joni Mitchell appeared onstage at the Newport Folk Festival. Singing alongside her were her supportive — and emotional — musician friends, including Brandi Carlile, Marcus Mumford, Wynonna Judd and Annie Lennox. Our critic Wesley Morris had his doubts. What was really happening here? Did Joni Mitchell even want this? Or were her younger adoring musician fans propping her up for their own reasons? When he learned this fall that Joni would be appearing onstage again, at the Hollywood Bowl, he bought a ticket to see for himself. On today's episode, Wesley talks with his editor Sasha Weiss about the concert, and what it's like to experience an 80-year-old in full command of her meaning.Guest: Wesley Morris, a critic at large for The New York Times.Sasha Weiss, the deputy editor of the The New York Times Magazine. Background reading: 50 Reasons to Love Joni Mitchell's “Blue”For more information on today's episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily.
