As the 2025 Kickstarter draws to a close (there's still time to back!) we're looking ahead at one of the major projects we have coming this year - Dawn of The Dogman. But not that, because it's not out yet! Instead Mark, Heather and Seth are talking about the some of the other Monsters of Michigan. Back the 2025 Kickstarter Campaign email Monsteropolis@smalltownmonsters.com BONUS: - Aaron's Unedited Producer Notes: Monsteropolis Monsters of Michigan WELCOME BACK KICKSTARTER is still running. Last episode before the campaign ends. To keep the excitement going we're talking about one of our upcoming projects - DAWN OF THE DOGMAN, but not THAT, because that's what the movie is, and you can't see it yet. Instead we're looking at the OTHER Monsters of Michigan. At least a few of them. There might be more. Wendigo – cannibalistic humanoid monster. Strong association with winter and extreme cold. Comes from native legends. Has gained a lot of popularity in the modern era, frequently placed alongside other cryptids, but very much its own Native legend. Comes from the Algonquin language/dialect spoken by tribes like Ojibwe, Kree and Saulteaux. You can kill a Wendigo by putting hot tallow down its throat, which melts its icy heart and kills it. Otherwise they're pretty much invincible. At least in some legends. Like a lot of native lore/older legends, as the Wendigo has become more popular it's been adapted as a storytelling motif. A lot of horror/narrative podcasts use it as the “monster of the week,” the video game Until Dawn features the Wendigo as it's primary antagonist (the special edition or secret ending bonus or whatever for that game has Chad Lewis in it talking about the Wendigo) Loup Garou - You'll have to wait for Dawn of The Dogman. Dogman and Loup Garou aren't exactly the same thing (Rougarou also) and if we wanted to we could get in the weeds and pinpoint differences between what we consider the modern “Dogman” phenomenon and the Loup Garoux vis a vis the term's roots in France but nah, we savin' that. Sasquatch - The BFRO lists 225 sightings for Michigan, and those are just the ones that made the cut. I don't really know what else to say about this. Michigan is big and cold and there's woods, so like, Bigfoot can hide there. Hey, here's a cool Class A report from the BFRO! Spring of 1999, near Copemish/Thompsonville “I was walking in the woods down a two track by Thompsonville in the early spring morning. On these early morning walks I often scare up deer and occationally a bear so when I heard the noises of something running in the woods I expected to see some such animal. Instead I saw what looked to me like a large man dressed in white running at an incredible speed. He was about 50 yards away and I tracked him for some distance. I was amazed at how he ran so fast through the dense undergrowth. He had to have long legs to be able to traverse the fallen trees and swampy areas. The next day I was walking in that same area and discovered tracks that confirmed to me it was not a man I had seen. They were quite large - about 18 inches or so. I could only see three toe prints thought there may have been more that didnt inprint and what may have been claws or long toenails that left a mark. The distance between them was about three of my strides long.” Pressie - five bucks you already know what this is. That's right baby, a WATER MONSTER, ERRBODY got a water monster these days. ERRBODY also be stealing Nessie's alliteration. What happened to originality. Just kidding, no really though I don't like this trend, kind of glad it's died off, anyway PRESSIE is, Supposed to be whale tailed and horse headed and have whiskers. Sort of sounds like a big manatee. It hangs out in Lake Superior. Lots of water there, plenty of places to hide. Very good monster place. Is Pressie a manatee? Must investigate. Probably not. It's supposed to be 75 feet long. First spotted in 1894! Wow. From there it jumps to 1977 with a few sightings in between, and conjecture over rumors of sightings in “the 1990s” Named for Presque Isle River where it has frequently been seen. Nain Rouge - bon nuit, The Red Dwarf AKA Red Man AKA Little Red Man. I did a House of Monsters on this guy. He's a favorite. Said to be a harbinger of bad luck and ill fortune Shows up before something bad happens Ya'll know Detroit be real french? City was founded by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac in the 1700s. ONE DAY this guy is on a stroll with his wife, when suddenly a TINY RED MAN jumps out of the bushes. Antoine yelled at the tiny man and hit him with his cane, after which he was CURSED. He eventually lost his fortune and died in poverty. The Nain has been blamed for a number of tragedies over the years, though whether he's supposed to be causing them or is just showing up to give people a warning seems to be a matter of interpretation. 1763 - The Battle of Bloody Run - 60 british soldiers are massacred by Native inhabitants (OH BUT OF COURSE this had nothing to do with the European settlers encroaching upon land and devastating their populations, sure, totally unprovoked, blame the nain, sorry feeling fighty today, been binging Cobra Kai) The great fire of 1805 - Massive city wide fire, destroyed nearly the entire thing. Massive loss of life and property. In the wake of the fire the city's flag was changed to include the phrase “Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus,” which means “We hope for better things; it will arise from the ashes.” Man I get chills every time, that's inspiring. 1967 - The 12th Street Riot - one of the deadliest examples of civil unrest in the United States at that time. Precipitated by a number of onerous conditions, such as racial segregation and over-policing, the riot would result in 43 deaths, nearly 1200 injuries and over 700 arrests. It went on for five days. 1976 - a huge blizzard knocked out and crippled much of the city's infrastructure And other tragic events throughout the years. The city would eventually embrace the Nain as a local symbol, holding an annual parade where they chase the Nain out of the city to usher out the bad luck. Fun fact, there's an OLDER story about Napoleon taking advice from a Little Red Man who advised him on battle tactics. He only lost when he didn't listen. He's supposed to have met the guy in an ancient egyptian tomb before declaring himself Emperor of France. PRODUCER'S NOTE - I'm very much of the opinion that the Nain Rouge is a direct folkloric descendent of Napoleon's little red man, not literally but like, there's clearly a lineage there. Giant Green Squirrel of Amble: “It is literally just a very large, green squirrel.” - Reddit Okay so. I guess this is a squirrel the size of a cow or a small car. It makes a lot of loud chirping and squeaking noises, and it's also green There, uh... There doesn't seem to be a lot more to this. Or anything else. I like it though, let's make a movie about it. https://99wfmk.com/monster-squirrel-amble/ Okay also though, there are apparently giant squirrel legends present in some native cultures in Nova Scotia (The Micmac Tribe) - some researchers believe these were derived from stories about giant ground sloths, which were (are?) a thing. So there is some background to this one. No idea if theres a direct link to the Michigan one. There are OTHER weird Michigan monsters, but because the movie doesn't come out for a bit we're gonna save ‘em. Thank you for listening, and be sure to go back the Kickstarter RIGHT NAAAOOO - Link in the show notes. There are only four days left (counting today at time of air), and then a brief window for late backing with much higher rates due to kickstarter specific policies beyond our control. And we did it. We made it to the last issue of FF. What a fun little series. Hickman put together some compelling stories and weaved them through this and Fantastic Four. We should take a moment to think about what we learned from our review of this series, FF, over this past year or so. Time has been spent on this book, and beer has been drunk. That all being said, what has been read and what has been discussed. We started with everyone thinking that the Human Torch was dead, and the hiring of one Mr. Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. This changed the team dynamics and beat of the team. We started with the team at a low point, but we end with a stronger and more knowledgeable family. There was also the introduction of the Future Foundation. This is the team that has our boy Alex having something mover tangible than what happened to him in the New Warriors, but not by much. At least he was treated like he had intelligence and not just a paper weight. But the Future Foundation was a great idea. A group of smart kids solving the world's problems. They were a weird group of punks who brought something different to the conversation. THe ensemble could have been used more effectively at certain points, but it was not bad. We discovered that AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics) having the bright idea to free The Wizard from prison and making him their leader proves that their ideas really aren't too advanced as they gave him back at the end of the series and asked for a do over. We learned that having Spider-man on your team is a great idea, while having Dr. Doom is an occasionally good idea if you can stand the Doomness of him. Also, inviting The Wizard, Diablo, The Mad Thinker and The High Evolutionary to stand with you for some out of the box thinking is a great way to to get betrayed and stabbed in the back when the chips are down by people that you just fed lunch to. A surprising number of issues deal with Black Bolt and The Inhumans interacting with the Supreme Intelligence and the Kree...we both found these issues, storylines and interactions to be boring, unwelcome and a distraction from important things, like what the Future Foundation kids are up to in their own title. Unfortunately, what they are often up to is standing off to a side, quietly observing the actions of other characters while storylines unfurl around them and their contributions amount to them being able to say that they were there too. Speaking of surprises, a surprising number of beings were turned into pets. Dr. Doom to a multiversal Reed Richards, a couple of multiversal Reed Richards' to a Supreme Intelligence, Johnny Storm to Annihilus, Annihilus to a resurrected Johnny Storm, and Galactus to a Franklin Richards. All in all it was a fun series and a worthwhile read, but it really shined when it dealt with the title holders of this series, the kids. Their developments, their growths, their failings and their foibles, their interactions and all the things that make them the foundation of the future. The Phoenix Force and Other Drama This week on the Podcast, Brian and Darryl are back after an unexpected hiatus due to Brian’s Achilles Tendon surgery, and they are reviewing the second half of X-Men ’97 season 1! Episode Index Intro: 0:07 X-Men ’97: 4:02 X-Men ’97 (Disney+) Out 10 Are Charles and Magnus an Items Darryl: 9/10 Brian: 8.5/10 Season Summary X-Men ’97 begins with Cyclops uncovering a new anti-mutant technology, leading to a reunion with an old foe and the addition of a new team member. Magneto, now leading the X-Men due to Charles Xavier’s last will, faces trial for his past crimes, while anti-mutant rioters test his resolve. As the team confronts a visitor with a dangerous secret, Jubilee is transported into a 16-bit video game, reliving the X-Men’s greatest adventures. The season continues with Genosha preparing to join the UN, leading to political intrigue and media scrutiny for the X-Men. Storm faces her worst fears in a two-part storyline involving her relationship with Forge. Cyclops targets Bolivar Trask but discovers a deeper manipulation at play. The season culminates in a three-part epic where the X-Men must unite against a formidable new threat, challenging their unity and the dream of peaceful mutant-human coexistence Episode 6: “Lifedeath (Part 2)” Directed by: Chase Conley Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: April 17, 2024 Summary: During a war between the Shi’ar and Kree empires, Shi’ar empress Lilandra Neramani announces her engagement to a now-healed Xavier. Refusing to accept her sister marrying a Terran, Deathbird invokes the Rite of M’Dashaa and challenges Xavier to purge all his memories of Earth to prove his loyalty to the Shi’ar. Xavier’s refusal to renounce his memories of the X-Men results in a battle between the Shi’ar Imperial Guard and Deathbird’s supporters until Xavier pulls everyone into the astral plane to educate them on co-existence. When this lesson is interrupted by a psychic vision of Gambit’s death, Xavier returns to Earth. At the ranch, Forge uses his mother’s spell book to expel the demon and then Storm helps him search for a rare cactus that cures the poison. Storm finds the cactus in a cave but is again cornered by the Adversary. Overcoming her fears, Storm regains her powers and defeats the Adversary. Storm heals Forge, and then they learn about the attack on Genosha. Elsewhere, Trask is confronted by Mister Sinister who warns that Genosha was just the beginning. Episode 7: “Bright Eyes” Directed by: Emi Yonemura Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: April 24, 2024 Summary: As the X-Men hold a funeral for Gambit, Rogue angrily searches for Gyrich and Trask. After gaining information from General Thunderbolt Ross and Captain America, Rogue finds Gyrich in Mexico and absorbs his memories. Gyrich is murdered later that night. While assisting in the recovery efforts at Genosha, the X-Men are contacted by a terrified Trask who tells them that he is in Madripoor. They get Rogue on the way. Roberto and Jubilee visit Roberto’s mother and tell her that he is a mutant; she asks him to keep his identity a secret. In Madripoor, the X-Men learn that Sinister and the UN’s secret “OZT” division have been developing a highly advanced Sentinel program. Rogue drops Trask to his death, unknowingly activating programming that turns him into a human–Sentinel hybrid. Cable arrives, defeats Trask with an EMP, and explains that Sinister is working with a greater threat that they must stop. This threat, who murdered Gyrich, is Bastion. He reveals to Sinister that Xavier is alive in space and that Magneto, presumed dead in the Genosha attack, is also alive and is Bastion’s prisoner. Episode 8: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 1)” Directed by: Jake Castorena Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 1, 2024 Summary: Part 1 : The UN reveals to the world that Xavier is alive, inciting an anti-mutant protest outside the school. Cable explains to the X-Men that the Genosha massacre is an “absolute point” in time that cannot be changed, and Bastion will use it to start a 300-year war that will lead to the enslavement of mutants in a human utopia. Cyclops, Jean, and Cable travel to Harmony, Pennsylvania, where they learn that Bastion is a human–machine hybrid who was conceived after his father was infected with part of the advanced, time-traveling Sentinel Nimrod. Members of “Operation: Zero Tolerance” (OZT) express concern over the massacre and ask Dr. Cooper to monitor Bastion, who explains to her how he is turning humans into Prime Sentinels like Trask using Sinister’s techno-organic virus. Prime Sentinels activate around the globe, attack mutants, and burn down Xavier’s school. A horrified Cooper releases Magneto, who creates a world-wide blackout that kills thousands of people and shuts down all of the Prime Sentinels. Wolverine fears that Magneto has declared war as Xavier returns and summons the X-Men. Episode 9: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 2)” Directed by: Chase Conley Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 8, 2024 Summary: Part 2 : Xavier is met with some distrust, but the X-Men focus on stopping Bastion and convincing Magneto to reverse his blackout. Magneto re-establishes his mutant haven on Asteroid M, choosing to leave the Earth without power and rejecting Xavier’s dream of mutant/human co-existence. He invites the X-Men to join him, which Rogue and Roberto do. The rest of the X-Men return to their former base on Muir Island to regroup, before splitting into two teams: Cyclops’s Blue Team goes to Asteroid M to confront Magneto while Storm and Jean’s Gold Team heads to Bastion’s hideout in the Galápagos Islands. Beast and Forge create a collar that can block Bastion’s technopathy and sever his control over the Sentinels. The Gold Team battles an army of Bastion-controlled Sentinels and Sinister, who takes control of Cable’s mind and uses him to overpower Jean; she sends a desperate psychic message to Cyclops. On Asteroid M, Xavier attempts to take control of Magneto’s mind but is blocked. Wolverine stabs and seriously injures Magneto who begins ripping the adamantium metal from Wolverine’s skeleton. Episode 10: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 3)” Directed by: Emi Yonemura Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 15, 2024 Summary: Part 3 : With Wolverine critically injured, Xavier takes control of Magneto and restores power to Earth, fracturing Magneto’s mind. Jean—connecting to the cosmic power of the Phoenix—places the collar on Bastion, restoring the Prime Sentinels’ humanity, and reverses Sinister’s mutant augmentations which frees Cable. The X-Men fight to prevent Bastion from crashing Asteroid M into Earth and causing a new extinction event. Still, it plummets after the U.S. government launches missiles at the asteroid hoping to destroy it. With Xavier’s help, Magneto regains consciousness and sends the asteroid into space. It explodes and most of the X-Men are presumed dead. Six months later, Bishop arrives and tells Forge that the X-Men are trapped in time: Cyclops and Jean are in 3960 A.D., a desolate future where they encounter Mother Askani and a young Nathan; and Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Xavier, and Magneto are in Ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C. where they meet En Sabah Nur, a young version of Apocalypse. In a mid-credits scene, Apocalypse finds one of Gambit’s playing cards in present-day Genosha. X-Men '97 is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Beau DeMayo. The series features music by the Newton Brothers.
