Why are men often so childish and immature, and so impossible to change? Drawing on 35+ years as a music business executive, interviews with 100 ordinary men (and women), and his life as a husband, ex-husband, and father to three sons, best-Selling author Tom Sturges attempts to make men less confounding and a lot easier to live with in his new book MEN EXPLAINEDF, FINALLYOver his 35 years in the music business, Tom Sturges has signed and/or collaborated with all different variations of the male "species," including Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Big Boi and André 3000 (Outkast), Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), 50 Cent, and Jon Bon Jovi. As a husband, ex-husband, and father to three sons, he has also lived and survived many "typical man" experiences. Through countless hours of golfing, watching football, drinking beer, and hanging out with the guys, Tom has discovered a whole lot of man truths, which he reveals in his totally unscientific, often hilarious, and sometimes startlingly wise new book, MEN EXPLAINED, FINALLY (Centimilla Press; October 7, 2025; ISBN: ISBN 979-8-89976-012-9, Hardback; ISBN 979-8-89976-011-2, Paperback; 239 pages). With tongue-in-cheek humor and a caveman-like commitment to the unadulterated truth, Tom Sturges lets women in on why men, generally speaking, think and act as if they are forever fourteen. Tom believes that women may gain some insights that lead to better relationships with the men in their lives. And men? Well, they might just develop some self-awareness... and a beard, if they want one. LOL. "While some of the fellas may rebuke me for what I've revealed, I think that none of them will disagree with the basic premise or foundational promise of this work," Tom asserts. "I would bet many of them don't even know this stuff about themselves, even though they enjoy the privileges of it every day."Organized in three parts, MEN EXPLAINED, FINALLY presents 45 essays, plus a few brief thoughts, on various topics related to Men (Part I), Men Compared to Women (Part 2), and Men and Women Getting Together (Part 3). At the book's core are two simple facts: Men are much more like other men than they would probably like to admit, and as noted before, Men are fourteen, forever. While a lot of people (okay, women) find men to be childish, immature, and often unwilling to make the slightest effort to grow up, Tom argues that maybe that's one of men's superpowers. And when women recognize that men bluff and bluster, and cling to beliefs in fate, luck, heroism, and love at first sight, it makes men so much easier to understand, accept just as they are, and love.Curious? Here's a taste of what Tom Sturges reveals: Men aim to please. "We love pleasing. We are, by and large, givers," Tom attests. But there's a catch: "We have to be asked nicely. It's a must. A request cannot sound like an order or a demand. Or worse, like some command."Men love forever. Men never forget the perfect thrill of a first crush or early love affairs. Trying to re-ignite an old flame? That's pure idiocy. "When it comes to old loves, men much prefer their memories to their realities," Tom notes. "There is a reason we call it 'Glory Days.'"Men compartmentalize. Why are men so good at putting messy stuff into boxes? For men, compartmentalization is a defense mechanism-a system for coping with life's complications and disappointments. "So," Tom advises women, "if a man has gotten lost in one of his boxes, be patient. Let him find himself again, on his timeline, not yours."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Eric's Perspective : A podcast series on African American art
In this episode, Eric sits down with talented and celebrated artist, illustrator and author… Kadir Nelson! They discuss how he first discovered his artistic inclination and how it had been fostered from an early age; having been mentored by artist and art teacher Michael Morris; his uncle. His educational journey in art — having received a scholarship to study art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and upon graduating with highest honors, how he was summoned by DreamWorks Pictures to create conceptual artwork for Steven Spielberg's Oscar® nominated feature, “Amistad” and the animated feature “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron”. They explore his artistic style and how it evolved through the years. From creating paintings and portraits, to illustration and sculpture! His distinct style of urban realism and how it's reminiscent of turn of the century American painters and historical subjects, often telling a story with his art and emphasizing the heroic. They discuss Nelson's process — what moves him and where he draws inspiration from. How he's displayed his works at notable exhibitions and in the permanent collections of several esteemed institutions… including the United States House of Representatives, The National Baseball Hall of Fame, the World Trade Center, the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of African American History and Culture and most recently, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. They delve into exciting stories about how Nelson was commissioned by a host of distinguished clients including music legend John McClain; creating works in honor of Marvin Gaye... painting the cover artwork for Michael Jackson's posthumously released album, “Michael” and recording artist Drake's multi-platinum selling album, “Nothing Was the Same”. His experience of creating cover artwork for the New Yorker magazine; that pay tribute to historical and contemporary American figures in New York City and abroad. How Nelson has authored and illustrated several award-winning New York Times Best Selling picture books including, “WE ARE THE SHIP: The Story of Negro League Baseball” and the great honor he had of becoming the recipient of the prestigious Caldecott Medal for illustration..! Guest Bio: Kadir Nelson (b. 1974) is an award-winning American author and artist based in Los Angeles, California. He is the recipient of multiple awards from the Society of Illustrators in New York, including the prestigious Hamilton King Award as well the 2020 recipient of the Caldecott Medal and Coretta Scott King Award for illustration. He adds this to multiple Caldecott Honors, Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator Awards, New York Times Best Illustrated Book Awards, several NAACP Image Awards and an Olympic Art Bronze medal, among others. Mr. Nelson has also created artwork for a host of distinguished clients, including but not limited to National Geographic, HBO, Nike, Disney, Hennessy, and Sony Music, for whom he painted the cover artwork for Michael Jackson's posthumously released album, “Michael,” which was listed in the Guinness Book of Records® for the largest poster in the world. Nelson's artwork was also featured on the cover of recording artist Drake's multi-platinum selling album, “Nothing Was the Same”; over a dozen commemorative US postage stamps honoring American legends, such as Major League All-Stars Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio, NBA great Wilt Chamberlain, and most recently Motown's Prince of Soul Marvin Gaye, which altogether have sold several million stamps. Nelson's primarily figurative paintings and sculptures focus on historical narratives and heroic subjects in American culture and are often informed by the Old Masters like Ingres, Michelangelo, Hopper, and Tanner. Binta Brown is a woman of letters. Two of those letters are "J.D." and they have undergirded her career, first at top Wall Street firm Cravath, Swaine and Moore and then as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis advising global entertainment and media companies, as well as in her leadership roles at iconic American institutions like the American Theatre Wing, Barnard College, Columbia University, and the New York Philharmonic (this is very partial list). Binta is also a lifelong musician (she plays 13 instruments), and took the leap into the music industry and artist management, including at Keep Cool/RCA Records and then with her own omalilly projects, a full-service talent management, media and entertainment company. Binta was quickly recognized as a force, and was named to Billboard's 2020 Hip-Hop & R&B Power Players list, 2020 Women in Music List and 2021 Change Agents List, among numerous other honors, and she worked with critically-acclaimed artists including Chance The Rapper. Binta has also had a number of challenging health issues and between shifts in her professional life, her health, her family and the pandemic, she has a lot to say about how to live life with intention. Binta talks about all of this and more with host Shoshanna Hecht on this episode of "Your New Life Blend," including how to see our own humanity in each others' stories (but maybe to consume a few less of each others' IG stories).Show Notes omalilly projects:https://linktr.ee/omalillySocial Media:https://www.instagram.com/batnibhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/binta-niambi-brown-07a303/
