Country Music Hall of Famer, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer, 2-time Country Song of the Year GRAMMY winner, and 5-time BMI Country Songwriter of the Year Paul Overstreet gives us a peek behind the curtain of his legendary career. PART ONE: Scott does his best not to throw a certain individual under the bus with a very funny story involving Paul Overstreet. Plus, the guys pay tribute to the late Joe Melson, past Songcraft guest and primary Roy Orbison collaborator. PART TWO: Our in-depth conversation with Paul OverstreetABOUT PAUL OVERSTREET Paul Overstreet is one of the most successful songwriters in Nashville history and among the three inductees in the Country Music Hall of Fame's class of 2026. His catalog of classics includes “Same Ole Me,” recorded by George Jones, as well as the Randy Travis hits “Digging Up Bones,” “No Place Like Home,” “Deeper Than the Holler,” “On the Other Hand,” and “Forever and Ever, Amen.” The latter two were both named Song of the Year by NSAI, the CMA, and the ACM. Additionally, “Forever and Ever, Amen” earned a Grammy award for Best Country Song in 1988. Overstreet won another Best Country Song Grammy in 1992 for “Love Can Build a Bridge,” which was a major hit for The Judds. Other highlights of the Paul Overstreet songbook include the number one hits “A Long Line of Love,” recorded by Michael Martin Murphy,” “When You Say Nothing at All,” which was a hit for both Keith Whitley and Alison Krauss, and “Some Beach” for Blake Shelton. In addition to his achievements with other performers, Overstreet became a successful recording artist in his own right. He reached the top of the charts in 1987 with “I Won't Take Less Than Your Love,” which he recorded with Tanya Tucker and Paul Davis, and had hits with the group S-K-O, a trio he formed with Thom Schuyler and Fred Knobloch. From 1988 through 1991 Paul scored eight consecutive top 10 singles as a solo artist, including “Seein' My Father in Me” and “Daddy's Come Around.” Paul was named BMI's Country Songwriter of the year five years in a row from 1987 through 1991, a feat that hasn't been duplicated since. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What happens when you finally stop chasing every plugin and build a mix workflow that actually works? My guest today is Grammy-winning mixer, producer, and musician Jason Lehning, returning to the show after RSR074. If the name sounds familiar, it should - we've also had his brother Jordan (RSR104) and his dad Kyle (RSR094), the legendary producer behind Randy Travis. Jason grew up in studios and learned early on that songwriting, engineering, and mixing all feed the same creative impulse. In this episode, we dig into what it really means to build a mix template that supports musical decisions rather than cluttering your session with endless “maybe” options. We talk about Jason's approach to vocal mixing - using parallels, dynamics, and tonal shifts to keep the performance feeling alive without over-processing it. He explains why he often duplicates vocals instead of relying on automation, how he thinks about track folders the way engineers used to think about console returns, and why an SM7 still wins sessions where expensive mics fall apart in a dense arrangement. He breaks down his low-end philosophy too: removing anything that fights the bass, organizing the bottom octave early, and using phase, arrangement, and smart routing to keep kick and bass speaking clearly together. Jason also explains why balancing quietly on NS10s helps him find the real center of a mix without getting fooled by loudness. We also dive into the Nashville writing world - how titles and wordplay drive sessions, why so many guitars are tuned down or in E-flat, and what it actually looks like to be in a writers' room where ideas come fast, bad lines get tossed quickly, and everyone is aiming for the same emotional center. Jason talks about working with Luke Dick (“Birthday Suit”), how even great writers have mountains of uncut songs, and why creativity depends more on vibe than perfection. We wrap with thoughts on AI, the future of songwriting, and Jason's simple advice to his younger self: keep doing it, and keep it fun.Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.comTHANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.comhttps://usa.sae.edu/ https://www.izotope.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.spectra1964.comhttps://gracedesign.com/https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academyhttps://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/Listen to the podcast theme song “Skadoosh!” https://solo.to/lijshawmusicListen to this guest's discography on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2M4JyTaCC2vd7U6cOERpup?si=8SERaORbTbSr_eV5zDSqAAIf you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/ReviewCLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/565

Laughing in the Dark: Suicide Prevention, Comedy, and Hope with Frank King In this episode, Kevin sits down with Frank King, a suicide prevention speaker, comedian, and former writer for The Tonight Show. Frank spent 20 years writing for late night television and has been a full time speaker and comedian for more than 40 years. Frank's work is deeply personal. His speaking is shaped by his lifelong experience with Major Depressive Disorder and Chronic Suicidal Ideation, including moments where he came close enough to ending his life that he can speak honestly and powerfully about what that darkness feels like. Instead of hiding that story, Frank has turned his long, dark journey of the soul into lifesaving work. He has delivered 13 TEDx Talks and shares his insights with corporations, associations, and audiences across the country to help people understand suicide prevention, mental health, and the power of honest conversation. Over the course of his career, Frank has shared the stage with legendary comedians and entertainers including Jeff Foxworthy, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, Dr. Ken Jeong, Ellen DeGeneres, Dennis Miller, Lou Rawls, The Beach Boys, and Randy Travis. And somehow, on top of all that, Frank has survived two aortic valve replacements, a double bypass, a heart attack, and losing to a puppet on the original Star Search. And yes, he's lived to joke about it all. This conversation is honest, meaningful, surprisingly funny, and deeply human. Frank brings a rare mix of comedy, courage, and lived experience to one of the most important conversations we can have. In This Episode Kevin and Frank talk about: • Suicide prevention and mental health • Living with Major Depressive Disorder • Chronic Suicidal Ideation • Why humor can help open hard conversations • Turning pain into purpose • Frank's journey as a comedian, speaker, and TEDx presenter • What people often misunderstand about suicidal thoughts • How honest conversations can save lives About Frank King Frank King is a suicide prevention speaker, comedian, and former writer for The Tonight Show. Chad just got back from Tennessee, and he's not over it yet. Good luck getting him over it. Nashville first, from Barrett Hobbs, the Scoreboard, the Nashville Palace, dinner at the Detroit Cowboy with Chef Marino throwing down on steaks and lobster, then straight to Kid Rock's Honky Tonk with a VIP section right above the band. That's how you do Music City. Then Lynchburg. The Jack Daniel's distillery. Barrel selection with 24 people, the biggest group selection Clint Bailey and Josh Phillips had ever done. Drilling straight into a nine-year-old barrel in a rickhouse, lunch at Miss Mary Bobo's, shopping at the hardware store, and a sunset dinner on the hill with cigars and rocking chairs made from actual barrel wood. Hank Jr., Waylon, Randy Travis, and Don Williams playing softly in the background straight from his friend's guitars. Chad also gets into the single-barrel program and why you should seriously look into getting one for your family, your company, and your legacy. The details on that are worth the listen alone. This one's a trip. Pour something good and come along for it. This episode is brought to you by Bedside, LEER, Scoreboard Nashville, Napa Valley Olive Oil, Corning Ford, DEMERBOX, Resistol hats, The Provider Culinary, and GATR coolers

In this wild episode of "Ventilation Friday," Lionel dives deep into the taboo and bizarre world of marriage laws, asking the ultimate libertarian question: what business does the government have telling you who you can love?. The conversation takes a hilarious and jaw-dropping turn as Lionel and his listeners debate the legality of marrying your first cousin in Florida. Buckle up for unbelievable caller anecdotes featuring incestuous "Franken-bird" finches, Iceland's mandatory relative-checking dating apps, and a crew of Mormon HVAC workers with suspiciously close family ties. Only a small slice of podcasts ever makes it to 100 episodes, so we wanted this one to feel like a real toast, not a victory lap. We talk honestly about how Try That in a Small Town started, why it mattered to us, and what it still means when the world tries to turn a simple message into something else. The heart of it is still the same: look out for your neighbor, stand up for people who can't defend themselves, and don't forget where you came from.We also rewind through the messy behind-the-scenes stuff that comes with building a weekly show while living in the music business, from our early “phone on the table” pilot to the deals that almost happened and the grind that never really turns off. If you've ever felt like your job follows you home, you'll understand this conversation about sacrifice, pressure, and why a great song can still light you back up.Then we have some fun with a question that instantly exposes every country fan's bias: the Mount Rushmore of male country singers. Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Randy Travis, Waylon, Hank Jr., Garth, Morgan Wallen and more get name-checked, argued over, and defended like it's a barroom court case. We wrap by sharing what we've learned about each other over 100 episodes, shouting out a listener story of the week, and thanking the people who've kept the lights on, including Patriot Mobile, eSpaces, Peacemaker Coffee, and Original Glory.
