After an intensive holiday season, we're taking a week off, so from the TCBCast Patreon archives we bring an episode from December 2023 when Bec and Justin convened to explore the Top 20 hits during the week in early 1969 that "If I Can Dream" peaked at #12, the highest it would reach on the Hot 100. What kept Elvis out of the Top 10? Turns out a lot of really iconic music! Unlike our usual Billboard charts episodes, the duo decide to go for broke and cover all of the Top 20, not just to include Elvis, but numerous other iconic songs of 1969 from acts as far reaching as Dusty Springfield, Jay and the Americans, The Turtles, Marvin Gaye, Sly & the Family Stone, BJ Thomas, Tommy James & the Shondells and many more. Then, we jump in our time machine back to November 2021's bonus episode and hear Gurdip and Justin's "Songs of the Month," as Gurdip spotlights a very Elvis-and-Buddy-Holly-influenced rockabilly cut from Buddy Knox, "Party Doll," while Justin picks "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray" a beautiful but an otherwise largely overlooked Patsy Cline tune occasionally encountered in a famous video game, and which manages to have a TON of Elvis connections. If you enjoy this kind of discussion and what we do on TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy. This month, patrons are getting an album review of Chuck Berry's "Berry Is On Top" and a discussion on the 3rd episode of the CMT TV Series "Sun Records." We'll be back next week!

On this week's episode, we have a discussion with Johnny Dwinell regarding what it is that drives artists to hear their songs on radio… and is it worth the cost? Today's terrestrial radio is attempting to figure out what their future is in the overall spectrum of things. At the same time, the record business is looking to see what their next step might be.Currently they're going to go with the devil they know (the current format and programming), yet knowing that it's not working, and not try the devil they don't know, which is streaming platforms. At the same time, you as the independent artist need to know your customer listening base. Hollywood has figured it out, by knowing who their customer is has become the new norm in television. Why hasn't the record business, or the music industry as a whole caught up to that paradigm shift? In order to even get the attention of radio these days, you need the following: You Need Spins to achieve market penetration You need 40 to 70 spins in each market to achieve that penetration You need to be in for the long haul (6 to 9 months) Those spins have to happen during peak listening hours The radio station has to have sufficient listenership While all this is going on, you as the artist need to understand that in the record label's eyes, you're a small business. These days, record companies are in the business of acquiring small businesses. They just don't know how to make that profitable for them. Few people have experienced the music business from as many different angles as Johnny Dwinell. An expert in the fields of digital marketing and social media growth and engagement, Johnny has worked with some of music's most notable names, produced albums, co-founded a well-known music business podcast and started a Nashville-based artist development company. Johnny co-founded Daredevil Production in 2012 with a focus on breaking artists in the digital world. Over the years, he has headed up digital marketing for cruises featuring popular artists like Tracy Lawrence, Ty Herndon, Jamie O'Neal and Andy Griggs. John's marketing expertise has also been used to sell out shows for country music legends T.G. Sheppard, Ronnie McDowell, and BJ Thomas. https://daredevilmusicproduction.com/ © 2023 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. Snuffy Walden Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson There are no accidents. House stand-in as he so aptly named hisslef, Emmy-Winning Composer, Snuffy Walden, was just what the doctor ordered. Live from the dining room, with Rufus for the most part chillin' between us, Snuffy got down, got real, letting us in as he seamlessly weaved through music, alcoholism, geographics, hitting big, breaking bad, highs, lows, getting sober, switching gears, success beyond his imaginings, the pandemic abyss, to slowly stepping back out amidst life's challenges. From piano to trombone, finding guitar, playing with BJ Thomas at 14 and strip clubs at 17, DJing, to living in a park with a roadie, Aphrodite in Denver to fronting Stray Dog, rocking like hell, and opening for Emerson, Lake & Palmer around the world, a near-miss with me in '74, drinking and debauchery, recording Songs in The Key of Life with Stevie Wonder, earning a platinum record, being in the passenger seat when Stevie drove––oh yes, he did; playing with Dave Mason at the peak, Chaka Kahn when she was breaking I Feel For You, touring with Eric Burdon and having an epiphany, thanks to longtime friend and bandmate, Michael Ruff, which would change, and save, his life. With all his success before, a few years later, without experience or training, he scored Thirty Something, then The Wonder Years, both Emmy nominees their first year, then meeting Sorkin and doing Sports Night, and then The West Wing, where he won that Emmy with his iconic main title, and then a dozen other Emmy nominations and 51 BMI Awards, representing over a hundred other shows… then the pandemic slowdown to almost shut down, and a recent rebirth doing what he loves and loving what he's doing, committed to turning up the joy in the monitors, because of and in spite of recent news. Snuffy's humility, humanity, and heart soar in his words and music. His dedication to being of service, hIs talent, and his sweetness, are ongoing inspirations to me and countless others. I neglected to say Happy Passover. Historically I've been a second-nighter, and this year is no exception. Tomorrow, Snuffy will be attending his first Seder. Hide the Manischewitz. From both of us. For Sylvia Harrell and BJ Thomas, convincing young people that waiting just 20 minutes when contemplating suicide is personal. They have both lost children to suicide, and neither of their children gave any indication they were contemplating taking their lives. Sylvia and BJ want to make sure others have the tools to cope when dark moments arise. Listen as they share about #Giveme20 (https://giveme20.net/) and the positive impact it is having on the mental health of our community. While this is a local program, plans are in the works to expand. Sylvia and BJ also talk about their family foundations, Keep the Spark Alive (https://ktsa.org) and Shifting Gears for Reagan (https://shiftinggearsforregan.com/). These women and their families work tirelessly to end teen suicide in our community.
A brilliant and classic song, overshadowed by a perfectly serviceable, but odd, cover of a cover, and a little help from James Gunn. Hooked on a Feeling, originally by BJ Thomas, covered by Blue Swede. Outro music is Listen to Your Heart, by Roxette.
Why does the modern world treat everything as black and white and insist we have to be on one side or the other? This week we look at this - including the earthquake in Turkey; the Church of England and SSM; Ukraine; the evidence for masks; Burt Bacharach; Covid Vaccines; Taylor Swift and Abortion; Bill Maher on Revolution; Sam Smith and the Highway to Hell; the Right Side of History - with music from Antrim Mennonites; B J Thomas; Taylor Swift; the Beatles; Sam Smith; ACDC; and Equip
Label: Scepter 12219Year: 1968Condition: M-Last Price: $15.00. Not currently available for sale. This recording is a personal favorite among B.J. Thomas hits. The ingredients are all perfect... the Chips Moman production, the American Studios musicians, the Mark James song, and the perfect B.J. Thomas touch. Plus that rhythm section that turns the whole thing into a Northern Soul dance-fest... Mmmm! I can almost fall for that New York woman myself! :-) The B side is a non-album cut. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Scepter Records factory sleeve. This 45's labels are almost Mint. The vinyl (styrene) looks untouched, and the grooves are blessed with pristine Mint audio! Have a listen to that powerful sound in the (admittedly pitiful compared with the original) mp3 "snippet" for this record.

Episode 201 continues the discussion on Gurdip, Justin and Bec's hand-picked Elvis fan "starter kits," focusing in on documentaries, biopics and movies starring Elvis from during his career recommended for newer fans. Then, for Song of the Week, histories behind three well-loved Elvis songs are covered, from different eras of Elvis's career: Bec starts us off in the 1970s with Elvis's live cover of the BJ Thomas classic "I Just Can't Help Believin'," Justin spotlights Elvis's 1965 gospel hit "Crying in the Chapel" and we hear the true story of what happened when Elvis was confronted by Carol Fran, the soul singer whose version of "Chapel" was eclipsed by his hit. Gurdip closes us out by going all the way back to the beginning and showcasing "Harbour Lights" from Elvis's first recorded session at Sun Studio in 1954. On May 29th, 2020, BJ Thomas passed away. It was an honor and a privilege to have BJ join me on TMWS before his passing. As I have said before, BJ was always supportive of my efforts whether it was the tortilla chip business or my radio show. A new album titled, “In Remembrance: Love Songs & Lost Treasures” is now available for pre-order through BJThomas.com. In an effort to support this album, on tonight's show, I'm sharing my interview with BJ where he shared about his love of music as a young person and the early beginnings of his music career. I hope you will listen and share.

History lesson for you: "Punk Rock" was not invented by the British in the mid 1970's. I know, it surprised me too. The term was apparently coined by music critics (those guys) back in the 1960 to refer to the aggressive, low-fi music coming from Detroit, Chicaco, and New York that was a direct sonic counter-point to the radio-friendly, squeaky clean, "hippie dippy" music (Fifth Dimension, Turtles, Sonny and Cher, BJ Thomas, et al) popular at the time. As with American blues, it was adopted and refined by "post-Mod" Londoners (some would say directed by Malcom McLaren) who gave it much of the subsequent imagery, fashion, and culture surrounding it. Since then, as with any good genre, it has been reclaimed, lost, split into a dozen sub-genres, buried deep in the earth for years at a time, dug up, recycled, made mainstream, driven back underground, and so forth. This week's guests, Gay Black Republican, while certainly not one of the original punk bands of Indy, are long-time veterans of the Indianapolis music scene and could be argued are the current reigning kings of that scene. Through six full-length albums and about as many EP's, bootlegs, and live recorded sets, the band has evolved from the garage band ethos to a more refined, intelligent-but-irreverent powerhouse of energy and musicianship. Next month marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the band, and as we learn in this interview, they show no signs of letting up or slowing down. Today on The Caregiver Dave Celebrity Segment, Dave and Neil Haley will interview BJ Thomas No umbrella needed! It is all sunshine for American pop music icon BJ Thomas as he celebrates a golden milestone for his Oscar winning classic “Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head.” “It's hard to believe it's been fifty years since “Raindrops” went #1,” Thomas reflects. “I've sold over 70 million records, but I have to say I am most appreciative of this song. It was a career changer for me when it came along. More than that, it was a life changer—a true blessing.” The whimsical masterpiece was written by renowned dream team Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the December 1969 movie release “Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid” starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman. While studio execs thought “Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head” was too unconventional and contemporary for what they knew would be a blockbuster western, they were proven wrong at the movie premiere when the audience exploded with delight at the famous scene featuring the song prominently played to the visual of happy-go-lucky Paul Newman riding a bicycle while he tried to impress his movie love Katherine Ross. Propelled by the movie's momentum, “Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head” crossed into a new decade on January 3, 1970 as the first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 where it remained for the next four weeks. It also took top spots internationally and for seven weeks sat in the pinnacle position on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
