I speak with singer-songwriter and mixed media artist Andrew Combs on the eve of his first solo gallery show (at Julia Martin Gallery in Nashville) about what it means to him in the context of a career spent largely in song and on stage. From touring with Kacey Musgraves to performing a set on perhaps the greatest taste-making venue ever — Tiny Desk on NPR — Andrew's decision to step back from the heavy touring that marked his twenties may at first seem surprising. But as we talk, I began to understand this thoughtful creator is — like many us — merely finding a way to make art in the context of his broader life: as a young father, as a person more comfortable in the privacy of a studio than under bright lights, and finally as one who, in a basic sense, is guided by a innate curiosity for expression and meaning, wherever that takes him. We discuss a few of his recent works and we play two of his original songs together, live in studio. Andrew's Solo Show “Fail Better” opens Saturday May 4 with a reception and live music (Andrew and friends) at the Julia Martin Gallery 444 Humphreys St Nashville TN. The show runs through May 25, 2024.
We cannot believe our senses over here at How to Tickle Yourself, because we got to interview a singer/songwriter who literally lights our souls on fire. His name is Andrew Combs. Andrew released an EP in 2010, and his first album, Worried Man in 2012. It was an auspicious start. Since then, he has graced us with four more: All These Dreams in 2015, Canyons of My Mind in 2017, Ideal Man in 2019, and Sundays in 2022. Texas born and Nashville-based, Andrew writes about love as beautifully as any songwriter we have ever heard. But also about the nature of existence. He's got “searching” lyrics - it sounds as if he's trying to find something, the secret of it all. He also sings like an angel, with a timeless voice. In any event, he's been on quite the artistic journey, from straightforward country/folk to orchestral accompaniment to indie singer-songwriter, to rock n roll impressionist to outright songwriting experimentalism with his latest, Sundays, during which he entered the studio with a producer and musician friend every Sunday to record a song he'd written that week, entirely in mono. He's also quite the painter. Check out his site, AndrewCombsMusic.com, for a sample.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Andrew Combs is one of those singer songwriters that just blows me away each time he puts out a new album. The interesting ways that he approaches the lyrics and music that accompanies his cinematic stories is a true gift. You never know what to expect but you can always expect something incredible. Andrew explains the mental health issues leading up to the album and how his friend, producer, and fellow musician Jordan Lehning got him into the studio on Sundays to record what would become the songs of Sundays. Each song is like a short story inside a larger theme and the musicians invited in beautifully compliment the stories that Andrew tells. Andrew is the embodiment of a true artist and I can't get enough of the art he created. Visit his website and pick up some art in physical form or some of his music. Andrew Combs is the executive chef for Stewart-Haas Racing, but what exactly does that entail? Combs takes us inside a busy week leading into the Charlotte Roval; what prep looks like before a race weekend; previous roles in the sport before turning to cooking; trying to describe the setup in the garage; knowing when it's time to start feeding everyone; putting together complex meals; having his working station custom made; how the equipment travels; sticking to favorites versus changing things up; accommodating for diets and other preferences; having a Smithfield sponsorship; how many people Combs feeds on a given weekend; watching and comparing to other team cooks; having a culinary degree and a long-time love of cooking; rules and regulations of the garage; having a Facebook page to share his cooking and racing adventures; doing some filming with the Food Network; what is the most fulfilling for Combs in his job. Andrew Combs is a Nashville based singer songwriter. His music is emotive and contemplative. It sets a mood and a tone reminiscent of Radiohead, minimalistic and introspective. His new album “Sundays” was written and recorded in the midst of the pandemic with some close friends. The music draws inspiration for various sources from film to meditation and allows the listener to ponder the themes masterfully laid out in the sparse arrangements. We talked about his songwriting, and the recording process of the album. I hope you dig it!
Hello friends! Nashville-based, singer-songwriter, Andrew Combs is my guest for episode 1204! His latest album, the dreamy, Sundays is available now wherever you stream or download your jams. We have a great conversation about making Sundays on the heels of a nervous breakdown at the end of 2020 with collaborators Jordan Lehning and Dominic Billet every Sunday for a couple of months, making the album in mono, touring, writing songs, meditation, having a family and much more! I had a great time getting to know Andrew. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! If you feel so inclined. Venmo: www.venmo.com/John-Goudie-1 Paypal: paypal.me/johnnygoudie

On Episode 135, I'm joined by singer-songwriter Stephanie Lambring. She released the excellent and intimate album Autonomy a few weeks back (October 23) to critical acclaim. Revolving around bold and direct storytelling, Lambring has crafted some of the most personable personal songs of the year. Much of the Autonomy's beauty comes in how comfortable (comfortable is such a strange way to describe this, but strangely apt) Lambring is with addressing insecurities and vulnerable flashpoints of the past and present. Throughout, she tackles a host of old ghosts and weighty subjects--everything from hypocritical Christians and double standards to suicide and domestic violence--with an attentive grace and nuanced empathy. Songs aren't brass, rushed, or carelessness--both in how Lambring cradles the subject and in her sharp, keen delivery. Her velvety vocals and the indie-rock fuzz meets country pop-punk flair create the perfect dreamy soundscape for the vivid snapshot memories and the introspective aftermath.During this interview, we talk about Lambring's creative process, releasing Autonomy a decade after her debut album, processing trauma, the complex cathartic nature of songwriting, writing with the likes of Andrew Combs, Lori McKenna, and Caroline Spence, early success, and how & why she was able to make the album she wanted with Autonomy. Episode 110: Ideal Man, the fourth full-length album from Nashville songwriter Andrew Combs has been praised by major outlets including Rolling Stone Country. Is it a country album? Is Combs a country artist? Well he undoubtedly was when his first records emerged. His debut album Worried Man had steel guitar and a snapping rhythm section and songs that got right to the point about loss and love. With 2017's Canyons of My MInd, a swooning lush atmosphere wafts in, and Combs voice - always full of emotion and carefully wrought - stepped up a few levels. It's one of the more seductive and involving male voices in Americana, in the same zone as John Paul White and Combs friend Dylan LeBlanc. It marked real growth and refinement, and Ideal Man does too. Also in the hour, Music Row songwriting success Erin Enderlin leans harder than ever into her artist career with the moving and deeply country Faulkner County.

Producing and writing some of the biggest tracks and records of 2018-19, listening to the universe, and breaking down the music of Ian Fitchuk. Starting in Illinois, we work on the life and ideas of Ian all the way up to Kacey Musgraves', Golden Hour's success and beyond. Ian Fitchuk's credits range from co-writing hits with Kacey Musgraves' to playing any instrument in the studio with major and indie acts. Presently his studio work ranges from singer-songwriter and Americana, to pop, rock, country music and the occasional gospel track. He has written and produced with Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, Andrew Combs, Lucie Silvas, Jacob Whitesides, Mindy Smith, and Drew Holcomb among others. In recent years, he has also collaborated with artists as diverse as James Bay, Cam, Kesha, Brothers Osborne, Shania Twain, Shawn Mendes, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Amy Grant, Jake Bugg, and Buddy Miller. He recently began composing for TV, including a track featured in ad for Google and several songs in the primetime hit, Nashville on ABC. In 2019, Ian was nominated and tied for most ACM nominations in categories like Producer of the Year, as well as Album of the Year, Bass Player of the Year, Drummer of the Year, Piano/Keyboards Player of the Year and Specialty Instrument(s) Player of the Year, for his contributions to Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour. In our conversation, we get to know what Ian gravitates toward in a session. Is it the people or the universe directing your actions and even the music? Not to mention, what holds most people back or puts people in a position to not move forward? But before we talk about music, we get to understand how Ian's early life echo's his talent. We also breakdown some of Ian's biggest projects in recent years including Ruston Kelly's Dying Star, Maren Morris' Girl, Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour, Susto, and others. We talk about taking risks, calibrating success, and creating an environment and balancing friendships in music.

Winter just arrived, but we’re already thinking about getting away, so a couple of musical trips today to Australia and Minneapolis, as well as some amazing new music and a couple of birthday dedications.
It’s Remembrance Day, so a tribute to soldiers and peace is in order. We’ve also got more exciting upcoming shows to preview and new music to share. Mix in some requests and dedications, and we’ve got ourselves a pretty decent program.
