In this episode we are joined by Nathanael Philip Mosher, talking all things performance. Nathanael is a comedian, poet, singer-songwriter, and aspiring human being. His love of words has led him from poetry to stand-up, singing to songwriting, all while continuing his love for the effervescent glow of poetry through performance and spoken word. As a poet, Nathan's poetry journey began at age 7 when he was chosen out of his third grade class to read a poem about the school janitor who was leaving after 20 years of service. The poem read, “You help us not slip. You help us not trip…” and so on. Thus, his penchant for rhyming and rhythm was born. At age 10, he was chosen by his 5th grade teacher to enter the Young Storytellers program where his play about a man becoming king of the Martians was acted by “Phil of The Future” star, Ricky Ullman. He continued to write poetry, entering in local workshops such as the historic Beyond Baroque poetry theatre in Venice, California, and eventually the California State Summer School for The Arts at Cal Arts, where he earned notable distinction of becoming a California Arts Scholar. At the California State Summer School for the Arts, which features notable alum such as James Franco, Zac Efron, and Katherine McPhee, he learned his passion for sharing personal stories.  At age 16, he began writing jokes, took to the stage, and began honing his craft at the age of 17 before he was even allowed into comedy clubs. While attending UCLA he took advantage of the burgeoning comedy scene, running shows in lecture halls, theatres, coffee shops, classrooms, and even parking lots, while continuing to perform nightly in the larger LA area. While at college, Nathan also performed around town, even getting a fake ID to perform at bars and comedy clubs. His voracious DIY work ethic compelled him to organize a variety of out of town tours, bringing his trademark informal yet, spellbinding words to stages in London, New York, Boston, D.C., San Francisco, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and as a semi-finalist in New York's NBC Stand Up for Diversity Showcase. Mosher's inherent ability to hustle while fostering his craft has elevated him to more recently work with respected acts like Maria Bamford, Ali Wong, and Jo Koy. During his senior year, he proudly signed to the prestigious management company 3Arts Entertainment which works alongside notable clients Kevin Hart, Aziz Ansari, and Amy Poehler. #207 - The Meteoric Rise of Catalog Sales

The Business Side of Music

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 22, 2022 45:26

The business of music catalog acquisition has become a hot topic of discussion lately. With the sales of such song catalogs once belonging to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, Shakira, John Lennon, Ryan Tedder, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, 50 Cent, Nelly, and many more, it's become a sellers paradise. But why? We talk with music publisher Trey Bruce, who is the owner and President of Galore Entertainment, a new entertainment company that develops artists and publishing assets through exploitation & sync licensing.  Emmy Award winning songwriter, Trey Bruce, moved to Nashville just in time for the 1990s Country Music boom. Trey was a rock drummer from Memphis so… what could go wrong? Luckily, as an unpublished songwriter, Trey's first demo got cut almost immediately by Shelby Lynn and was a top 15 hit so, as a result he signed his first publishing deal with MCA Music in November of 1989. During the MCA years Trey had a few minor cuts and then, his first #1 single, on Randy Travis called, “Look Heart No Hands”. After three years at MCA, in 1993, Trey co-founded a small indie publishing company, Big Tractor Music, with renowned record producer Scott Hendricks and there Trey received 13 ASCAP Awards, an Emmy Award, five #1 singles, multiple top 5 and top 10 radio hits and an Academy Of Country Music, Song Of The Year nomination. During the Tractor years Trey developed a love for coffee and long nights in the studio so he became a record producer. In 2005 Trey started a publishing/artist development joint venture with Chrysalis Music in Nashville. At Chrysalis Trey searched out new artists before anyone else had discovered them. Trey signed and developed teenagers, Charlie Worsham now on Warner Brothers, John & TJ Osborne of Brothers Osborne now on Universal Records, Chris Janson also on Warner Brothers and American Idol's 12th season runner-up, Kree Harrison. The importance of being teachable and how to make your own “twist” to what someone else has already done. Why you don't need to know everything before starting a business. Why fear of failure shouldn't stop you from jumping in and building the business of your dreams. Internationally renowned hair stylist, Jonathan Antin, is known for creating the most sought-after hairstyles for Hollywood's A-list celebrities. A true innovator in the world of beauty, he made his television debut on ABC's Extreme Makeover and E! Entertainment's Fashion Emergency, effectively pioneering the trend of bringing beautiful hairstyles to modern day cable and network programming. Antin's acquired fame and success led to a starring role on Bravo's hit series Blow Out, which chronicled his life for 3 years as a passionate and driven salon owner and celebrity stylist. Shortly after, Antin took over the role as the head judge on the 3rd season of Bravo's next hot show, Shear Genius. Blow Out and Shear Genius aired in over 40 countries bringing Jonathan international acclaim in addition to being two of the first reality TV shows ever on air hence changing the face of television today.A Los Angeles native, Antin was raised among the fashion and beauty industry's elite. As a teenager, he was inspired by Warren Beatty's role in the award-winning hit movie Shampoo. It was then that Antin found his true calling and enrolled in the Hollywood Beauty Academy, after which he began working at some of the city's best salons. Like Beatty's character, Antin's good looks, charisma, unique fashion sense and fresh approach proved irresistible. Within a few short years, and after extensive experience styling runway shows in NYC and Paris, Antin opened the doors to his own namesake salon for over 20+ years, garnishing a list of celebrity clientele, all the while creating his own successful hair product collection sold globally and on QVC.For more than 25 years, Antin's cutting-edge hairstyles and innovative contributions to the world of lifestyle and beauty have been featured in countless  fashion and style magazines, including Vanity Fair, Elle, Vogue, Allure, W, In Style, People, Glamour and Harper's Bazaar. Antin also fashioned the looks in many award winning music videos including Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca," Aerosmith's "Livin 'on the Edge" and the Pussycat Dolls "Don't Cha". Antin has worked with high-profile celebrities including Madonna, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Eva Mendes, Kate Bosworth, Jewel, KD Lang, Christina Aguilera, Tobey Maguire, Eric Dane, Jay Leno, Tiger Woods, Katherine McPhee, David Beckham and Gavin Rossdale – just to name a few. Additionally, he has appeared regularly and shared his expertise on NBC's Today Show for over a decade, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, ABC's The View, Jimmy Kimmel Live and also on cable networks including E! First up it's Nate Harris, and he shares his five and a half favorite moments from the show after chatting before and after the season finale about whether the show is too straight, why the term and the concept of hate-watching must be destroyed, and what the best thing to say is when somebody gives you a massive sum of money. Then, Smash season one writer Jason Grote is here to discuss the show alongside with Vulture Smash recapper Rachel Shukert! Learn what Julia was meant to be eating in bed instead of peanut butter! How the show could have made more sense if Katherine McPhee had played Katherine McPhee instead of Karen Cartwright! And why Derek will never not be likeable. Also! Julie asks some How Was Your Week friends/ Smash fans what their favorite moments from season one were and therefore, there are cameos in this episode from Morgan Murphy! Jackée Harry! Retta! Scott Brown! Holly Schlesinger! My Gentleman friend, Jack! And Billy Eichner. Finally, the Smash Twitter accounts are finally discussed. An easter egg!
