This is a special feature on Crime to Burn. On Sunday, November 10, I was able to sit down and have a conversation with Kristine Bunch. We covered Kristine's case in episodes 32 and 33. Kristine was accused of intentionally setting a fire at her home that claimed the life of her toddler son. Investigators developed their theory of what happened based on a now debunked arson investigation myth that was once widely believed. When the forensic testing didn't support investigators' theories, they allegedly colluded to falsify test reports that were presented in court to secure Kristine's conviction for arson and murder. Kristine spent 17 years incarcerated for a crime she did not commit. The truth finally prevailed and Kristine was exonerated and released from prison and she has not stopped fighting to help others. Hear about Kristine's work since her release and how you can get involved.  Please visit the organizations listed below to find out how you can get involved in Kristine's continued fight for truth, justice, and successful reintegration post-incarceration.  https://exoneratednation.org/   https://www.lifeafterjustice.org/   https://organizationofexonerees.com/   https://www.uis.edu/news/illinois-innocence-project-uis-begins-wrongful-conviction-awareness-and-avoidance-training   IMPORTANT NEWS:  April is a guest on the Dairyland Frights podcast episode airing on November 17th. In this episode we conclude the story of Kristine Bunch's wrongful conviction for arson and murder. When Kristine was 21, her trailer home burned down taking the life of her toddler son. At 22, Kristine was sentenced to 60 years in prison for a crime she did not commit. Last week we had an in-depth discussion of fire dynamics and what arson investigators found. This week we uncover the dark truth about the alleged collusion between investigators and an ATF forensic chemist that altered test results and ultimately sent Kristine to prison for 17 years. We discuss Kristine's agonizingly long fight and wait for justice to be served. Kristine's conviction was overturned but that's not the end of her story. Hear about her amazing work to help others that have been wrongfully convicted.  Background music by Not Notoriously Coordinated  Please follow us on Instagram, X, Facebook, and Youtube for the latest news on this case. One fateful night in 1996 Kristine Bunch woke to a home full of flames. She struggled to extract her young son from the fire but failed.  Much to her surprise and horror, she was charged with setting the fire that killed her child.  Bunch was convicted on expert testimony which was later held in question. No one would have taken a second look at her case had she not fought from prison to find advocates to examine the testimony and evidence.  After 17 years of incarceration, she was released, and the conviction was dismissed.  Bunch discusses her case and the burdens of wrongful conviction for herself and others. Pregnant, 22, and labeled a “baby killer,” Kristine was still reeling from the death of her son as she headed to prison to begin her 60-year sentence. In Part 2, Kristine walks us through how she overcame insurmountable odds as she fought for and gained her freedom.About Kristine...Kristine Bunch spent more than 17 years behind bars after she was arrested and charged with setting a fire that claimed the life of her three-year-old son, Anthony. Jurors believed the prosecution witnesses and found Kristine, then 22 and pregnant, guilty of murder and arson. "An electrical fire took her son. An arson expert took her freedom." Kristine spent 17+ years behind bars after being arrested and charged with setting a fire that claimed the life of her three-year-old son. In 2012, the Indiana Court of Appeals overturned her conviction after lawyers argued that arson evidence was wrong and key documents had been withheld from the defense before trial. Kristine was set free — 17 years, one month, and 16 days after her wrongful arrest. Today, Kristine is the co-founder of the nonprofit Justis4Justus, supporting exonerees as they transition back into society after wrongful conviction. Kristine talked with us about that tragic day that she lost her son - and ultimately her life. S2E13: Justice Had Just Begun: Stories From The 2017 Innocence Network Conference, Part Two This special edition of Wrongful Conviction was recorded at the 2017 Innocence Network Conference in San Diego, CA, where 170 exonerees and 750 members of the innocence movement gathered to honor newly freed people and learn about the latest developments in freeing the wrongfully convicted. Part Two features interviews with Kristine Bunch and Obie Anthony. Kristine Bunch was 22 years old and pregnant when she was charged with setting a fire that claimed the life of her three-year-old son, Anthony, on June 30, 1995, in a trailer home they shared in Decatur County, IN. She was sentenced to concurrent prison terms of 60 years for murder and 50 years for arson and languished behind bars for more than 17 years until her exoneration in 2012. Obie Anthony was 19 years old when he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1995. There was no physical evidence connecting him to the murder, and prosecutors relied on the testimony of John Jones, a convicted killer and pimp who ran a house of prostitution near the scene of the crime. He was exonerated in 2011 after serving 17 years in prison. Obie Anthony is the founder and president of Exonerated Nation, a non-profit organization that offers exonerees a variety of support services so that they may successfully transition to life outside of prison and reintegrate back into society. His activism was instrumental in the passage of California AB 672 in October 2015, now known as Obie’s Law, which requires the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the DMV to provide up to one year of transitional services including job training, housing assistance, and mental health services to all eligible exonerees released from state prison. wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom is a production of Lava For Good Podcasts in association with Signal Co. After escaping the flames, she watched in horror as firefighters were unable to save her 3-year-old son who was still trapped inside.
