Lauren shared so much valuable information I'm going straight to the Key takeaways: Learn how to thrive in uncertainty Failure is always an option so you ask yourself: is it worth it even if I fail? Optimize your talent Understand both how you work (skillset) and what you do (areas of expertise) because skills are transferable Develop the ability to observe Strive to work in your zone of genius Be clear on what motivates you as well as your team and the people around you. Look at systems - change and transformation require a multi-prong model Data is an equalizer - learn to read and decipher data + how to storytell around data.  Lauren has advised and invested in over 40 startups and her portfolio represents over $5 billion in market capitalization. In 2012 an organization called digitalundivided (DID) was founded with the mission of using innovation to create systemic change by catalyzing economic growth for Black and Latinx communities through women entrepreneurs. DID's various initiatives from technology, mentorship and community building have helped women of color recognize their visions and build upon their excellence to launch myriad companies.  This past year, board member Lauren Maillan was tapped as the new CEO of DID to bring her depth of experience as a brand marketer, public personality and entrepreneur to lead the company through the difficult days of COVID and beyond.  Lauren’s story is anything but typical. She’s a powerful force who sets an extreme example of what’s possible, lighting the path of progress for others to follow. Perhaps the most intriguing part of her story is how it all began as the youngest self-made winery owner in the country. Since then she hasn’t stopped building, iterating and creating for a second and now her mission is to bring her spirit and energy to hundreds of powerful and brilliant women of color to help them realize their dreams. -- Show Notes: digitalundivided ProjectDiane If you enjoyed this podcast, please subscribe, share with your friends and rate and review on Apple Podcasts and Podchaser. I was stunned when, a couple months ago, I attended a media event for the Oxygen show, Quit Your Day Job (think SharkTank meets Survivor), where one of the panelists, and show co-host, Lauren Maillian took her turn at the mic, introducing herself. Some of the first words out of her mouth were, "I'm a single mom." I wasn't sure what she said after that, because I was so stunned — I have never, ever heard a high-profile woman lead with her unmarried moms status. This was a triumph. So is Lauren. I met Lauren, 31, a few years ago when we discussed working on a book together. She is remarkable — a former fashion model (she is remarkable in her beauty and fashion, as we discuss in this episode. Seriously, she GOES THERE when she steps out), wine entrepreneur, best-selling author, luxury marketing consultant, TV personality, philanthropist and, of course, single mom. In this episode we discuss: The power of feminine beauty in business. How being the only black kid in her Manhattan private school developed her risk tolerance and thick skin. How she integrates her children, ages 6 and 8, into the untraditional flow of her professional life, and why that is so fantastic for the whole family. Her commitment to being an advocate for women and women of color in the boardroom, despite never facing sexual discrimination herself. Why bringing your A game all the time is so critical (even if the press makes fun of your frequent wardrobe changes).   Check out Lauren's book, The Path Redefined:

My guest today is a former model turned serial entrepreneur, TV personality, and author. Lauren Maillian, at just 19 years old founded a boutique winery, making her the youngest self-made winery owner in the country. Since then, she has served as the founder and CEO of LMB Group, which is a strategic marketing company and is a founding partner at Gen Y Capital Partners, an early stage venture firm focused in investments in mobile and consumer facing technology enabled companies. Lauren’s passion in business is to marry marketing, branding strategy, and technology. She’s going to co-star in a new TV show in Oxygen this January called Create Your Day Job. She’s also the author of the best-selling business memoir, The Path Redefined. In our conversation, we learned how her father’s upbringing influenced her dedication and drive to becoming financial independent at a really young age. We talk about what does it take for a 19 year old to want to launch her own business? Keep in mind, she was doing this while in school and expecting a child. And her So Money moment when she sold her winery and why, she says, “You know what? I was really scared in that moment.”  For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.
