⚠️ Content note: This episode contains references to suicide. Please take care of yourself as you listen. What does it really mean to be happy — and why do so many high-achieving, outwardly successful people struggle to feel it? In this deeply honest and practical conversation, happiness coach Todd Patkin joins host Serena to explore the hidden cost of perfectionism, the systemic roots of burnout, and the 12 steps he developed to help people move from surviving to genuinely thriving. After growing a family auto parts business by 20% year-on-year and working 70–80 hours a week, Todd hit a wall at age 36. A complete mental breakdown, suicidal ideation, and an inability to even answer a simple question at a restaurant forced him to stop and ask: Why am I doing this to myself? What emerged from that dark chapter was a 12-step program to happiness — one he has since shared with corporations, schools, associations, and individuals worldwide. What You'll Learn in This EpisodeWhy bullying in childhood can plant the seeds of perfectionism and anxiety that follow us into adulthoodHow the "tombstone test" can help you realign your daily life with what truly matters to youWhy perfectionism is a socially rewarded addiction — and why that makes it so hard to breakThe real reason social media is making young people (and adults) so unhappyHow we spend more than half our mental lives in the past or future — and what that costs us in the presentWhy loneliness carries the same health risks as smoking 15 cigarettes a dayThe surprising role of generosity in your own wellbeing (givers are 40% happier and 25% healthier)How introverts can lean into friendliness without betraying their natureThe importance of seeking professional help for anxiety and depression — and why medication is nothing to be ashamed ofTodd Patkin's 12-Step Program to Happiness — OverviewWeek 1 – Exercise    Week 2 –  Prepare your mindsetWeek 3 – Be Kinder to Yourself (Todd's most important step)  Week 4 – Play to Your Strengths  Week 5 – Living in the Present  Week 6 – Eliminate Stressors  Week 7 – Surround Yourself with Positive People  Week 8 – Spend More Time with Family and Friends  Week 9 – Be Cheerful and Connect with Others  Week 10 – Be Giving    Week 11 – Practice Gratitude  Week 12 – Connect with a Higher Power  Memorable Moments from This Episode"Happiness is just being okay with yourself because you're here."  "Most people say things to themselves all day long that they wouldn't even say to their worst enemy."  "We reward perfectionism, whereas we look down upon alcoholism and smoking — and that's one of the problems we have in society today."   About Todd PatkinTodd Patkin is a happiness coach, author, and speaker who spent over a decade building and leading a successful family auto parts business before experiencing a severe breakdown at age 36. That turning point led him to develop his 12-step program to happiness — a framework he has shared with corporations, schools, associations, and individuals across the country. Jason Wong is the Founder and CEO of Paking Duck, which provides custom packaging solutions for DTC brands. Before launching Paking Duck, he built and scaled multiple DTC ventures, including Saucy, an end-to-end sourcing and logistics company, and the beauty brand Doe Lashes, which reached significant valuations under his leadership. Jason started his career as a teen entrepreneur in blogging, affiliate marketing, and e-commerce before expanding into international logistics, manufacturing, and supply chain operations. In this episode… Most founders obsess over ads, creative, and conversion rates — but overlook the one thing every customer physically touches. Packaging is often treated as a cost to minimize rather than an asset to optimize. How can the box on your customer's doorstep increase retention, reduce costs, and drive revenue? Packaging manufacturing expert and e-commerce entrepreneur Jason Wong maintains that packaging can be a growth lever. He explains that packaging should be designed as a marketing channel inside the home — something customers proudly display, turning it into a mini billboard that keeps your brand top of mind. Jason advises founders to engineer packaging strategically by reducing dimensional weight to lower shipping costs, reinforcing structural integrity to prevent refunds and chargebacks, and designing with storytelling in mind to strengthen brand perception. When approached holistically, packaging moves from a backend expense to a compounding growth asset. In this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris sits down with Jason Wong, Founder and CEO of Paking Duck, to discuss how packaging drives e-commerce growth. Jason explains why packaging is a revenue driver, how smarter structural design reduces shipping costs and damage, and the common mistakes founders make when optimizing purely for cost.

281. 5 Reasons Why You Need to Spend More Time on Sentence Writing in Upper Elementary [Listen Again]

Stellar Teacher Podcast

In today's episode, I'm diving into a small but mighty part of literacy instruction that has a huge impact on your students' reading and writing success—the sentence. For years in my own classroom, I didn't give sentence-level work nearly enough attention, even though sentences are at the heart of everything students read and write. If you've ever wondered how to strengthen your students' writing, boost their comprehension, or make your literacy instruction more effective, this episode will give you a fresh perspective on why focusing on sentences matters so much.I'm sharing five key reasons why sentence-level work is an essential part of upper elementary literacy instruction. Strong sentences are the foundation of all writing—whether students are crafting paragraphs, essays, summaries, or responses to reading, their success depends on their ability to write clear, complete, and detailed sentences. At the same time, understanding sentence structure is crucial for comprehension. When students understand how phrases and clauses work together, they are better equipped to make meaning from the increasingly complex texts they encounter. Plus, sentence-level work is manageable for students and teachers, it's one of the most effective ways to teach grammar, and it benefits all learners—those who struggle and those who are already confident writers. My hope is that this episode inspires you to slow down and give sentence-level writing the time and intention it deserves. Prioritizing sentences can transform your writing instruction, strengthen your students' reading comprehension, and make your overall literacy block more effective and more manageable. Whether you're looking for a place to start or simply need a reminder that small shifts can lead to big growth, this episode will give you practical insight into why every upper elementary teacher should be spending more time on sentences.Join us in the Stellar Literacy Collective Membership: stellarteacher.com/join!Sign up for my FREE private podcast, the Confident Writer Systems Series, here!Sign up for my FREE Revision Made Easy email series here!Follow me on Instagram @thestellarteachercompany. In this episode of the Experience Strategy Podcast, hosts Aransas Savas, Joe Pine, and Dave Norton discuss a Wall Street Journal article written by Jennifer Williams about retail, focusing on how major brands are intentionally slowing down the shopping experience to enhance customer engagement. They explore the importance of creating meaningful experiences, the lessons learned from Toys R Us, and the need for authenticity in retail strategies. The conversation emphasizes measuring success beyond traditional sales metrics and highlights the future of experience-led brands. Takeaways The longer someone spends in a store, the more likely they are to convert into a purchaser. Retailers are adding experiences to encourage customers to linger longer. Time well spent is a key concept in enhancing customer experience. Experiences must be meaningful and relevant to the brand. Toys R Us failed to create relevant experiences for their target audience. Lego gets it. Camp.com gets it. Retail success should be measured by time value, not just sales per square foot. Authenticity in brand experiences is crucial for customer loyalty. Walmart is evolving to compete with experiential brands. Experience-led brands can charge for their unique offerings. My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/ Given the tumultuous economic landscape for local news, many outlets are turning to nonprofit models because they offer increased flexibility for generating revenue. But while these outlets have been adept at attracting foundation grants and small donor memberships, they're not doing enough to cultivate relationships with the wealthy members of their own communities, many of whom can write much larger checks than your average reader.   At least that's the thesis of Julie Rafferty. She not only has a deep background in consulting with nonprofits, but she also played an instrumental role in co-founding Brookline News, a nonprofit media outlet that operates outside of Boston.    In a recent interview, Rafferty walked through how she got wealthy members of her city to fork over $100,000 before the outlet even launched, and she gave some good advice on how other nonprofit newsrooms can identify and reach out to rich people in their own communities.

If you've ever felt stretched thin trying to juggle business and family and ALL THE THINGS, this is for you.The truth is, the past few months I've felt pretty drained in my life + business. There are a lot of personal things causing big decision fatigue, and it has definitely impacted the energy and focus I have for work. Don't get my wrong, I LOVE my business, but I've also made it way more complicated than it needs to be. And honestly? I've realized recently that the reason my life doesn't feel as slow and peaceful as I want it to be is all on me!I don't have an off switch when it comes to ideas and goals, and while that ambition has served me well in some ways, it's also keeping me from the slower, more present life I say I want. So, after a lot of prayer and reflection, I'm making some big shifts. It feels both terrifying and freeing, but I know this is what I need right now. I want a business that serves others, provides for my family, and actually fits my life, not one that constantly pulls me away from it.If you've been feeling stretched thin, trying to do all the things and wondering if there's a simpler way, I hope this episode gives you some encouragement! I'm sharing what's changing, why I'm making these shifts, and how I'm figuring out a way to build a business that actually works without sacrificing what matters most

Why is HubSpot's INBOUND Conference Important? HubSpot is one of the leading marketing companies, dedicated to gathering and sharing essential industry insights. The conference is a key platform for unveiling the latest trends and innovations in marketing, and sales. INBOUND brings together industry leaders, offering attendees the chance to network, share ideas, and build partnerships with top professionals in their fields. It also features thought leaders and innovators who inspire attendees with new perspectives and creative solutions to business challenges. 1. Search is Dying To some extent, search engines are declining. Is it even worth caring about what Google thinks of ChatGPT writing anymore? HubSpot estimated that search is projected to decrease by 25% by the year 2026.   Why is this happening? Honestly, what's the point of using Google when you can just use AI? 2.
