This week's episode is a replay of Episode 76: From Lawyer to Chocolate Maker: How Shawn Askinosie Found His Calling. Sure, quitting is easy if you've always hated your job. But what if you used to love it? What if you loved it for many years? What if you were really, really good at it? I'm so excited about this week's episode with the amazing Shawn Askinosie. Shawn walked away from a very successful career as a criminal defense attorney, a job he used to love. Until he didn't. He realized that the career he once loved was putting him into an early grave and that it was time to do something else. Shawn is now the founder of Askinosie Chocolates, named by Forbes as “One of the 25 Best Small Companies In America.” He was also named by O, The Oprah. Magazine, as "One of 15 Guys Who Are Saving the World." No big deal. He spends his days traveling between 4 continents to directly source his cocoa beans from farmers, where he offers them above Fair Trade prices, open books, and a share of his profits. He has created an inspiring company that not only gives back directly to the farmers but his community as well. His book - Meaningful Work: The Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling And Feed Your Soul, co-written with his daughter, Lawren Askinosie, published by Penguin Random House is a #1 bestseller on Amazon. I got to chat with Shawn about how he walked away from a career he loved and how he figured out what he should do next. Here is what we chat about in this episode: Do the deep work and figure out who you truly are. Look for those thresholds. Be vulnerable with the people in your life. And so much more! Lawren Askinosie grew up around craft chocolate, and with craft chocolate. Still in high school when her father transitioned from courtroom to chocolate-making and started one of the first small batch chocolate factories in America, she assisted him in almost every facet of their new life as chocolate makers—from working the storefront to developing marketing material. Eager to jump into the family business full-time Lawren began college early and upon graduation at 20, dove headfirst into learning the ins and outs of operating a bean-to-bar chocolate factory, building a brand, and marketing and selling craft chocolate. Now the Chief Marketing Officer of the direct trade business that Forbes recently named “One of the 25 Best Small Companies In America,” Lawren is passionate about more than helping to shape the conversation around craft chocolate. She loves assisting Shawn to build sustainable relationships with smallholder cocoa farmers (especially female farmers), telling those stories, and finding innovative ways to connect the dots between the direct trade model, quality, and community. A passionate advocate for women, Lawren works to empower women through every aspect of the business from helping to seek out female-led farmer groups to facilitating girls empowerment initiatives in Askinosie's cocoa origin communities. Lawren's first book, which she co-authored with her father, called Meaningful Work: A Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling And Feed Your Soul is available here.Lawren is based in Austin, TX with her husband and three dogs (we lovingly call it "The Austin Annex"). Because technology, she's able to do her job remotely but also spends tons of time at the chocolate factory in Springfield. When she's not chocolate-ing or traveling, she's eating her way through Austin (with particular emphasis on tacos, BBQ and margaritas) and listening to live music.Lawren serves on the board of Girls Empowerment Network, a Texas-based nonprofit that seeks to ignite the power in girls throughout the state by teaching them self-efficacy. In “The Bitter and the Sweet of Craft Chocolate in the Global South” episode of Gravy, producer Sarah Holtz engages important voices in the complex conversation about ethical chocolate, from central Ghana to southern Missouri. In the chocolate world, terms like corporate sustainability and ethical sourcing are gradually entering the mainstream, but they remain a little vague. Holtz explores how direct trade and profit-sharing models offer alternatives to the practices of the largest chocolate companies in the world—Big Chocolate—which conceive of cocoa farmers not as partners, but as links in the supply chain. In her reporting on labor in the chocolate industry, Holtz asks: How do you define ethical consumption? Is there such a thing? And—when you're standing in the grocery aisle, gazing at a wall of options—how do you know which chocolate bar to choose? To begin to address these questions and more, Holtz speaks with Kwabena Assan Mends, founder of Emfed Farms, a company that serves small cocoa farmers in central Ghana, especially those who are aging or have physical disabilities. She also talks to Shawn Askinosie and Lawren Askinosie of Askinosie Chocolate, and Scott Witherow of Olive & Sinclair, two vanguards of the craft chocolate movement. Finally, Megan Giller, food writer and author of Bean-To-Bar Chocolate: America's Craft Chocolate Revolution, weighs in on the history of the chocolate supply chain and upending a pattern of colonization.

In 2005, Shawn Askinosie left a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer to start a bean-to-bar chocolate factory and never looked back. Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch, award-winning chocolate factory in Missouri, sourcing 100% of their cocoa beans directly from farmers across the globe. Recently named “One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America” by Forbes, Askinosie Chocolate was founded at the forefront of the American craft chocolate revolution and is regarded by many as a vanguard in the industry. But other than the honestly sourced cocoa, what’s the secret of Askinosie Chocolate’s success? According to Shawn Askinosie (and his daughter Lawren Askinosie), there is a lot more, as he shares in Meaningful Work: A Quest to Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul.
By many measures, Askinosie Chocolate is a small company — they work in small, artisan batches, they focus on developing their 17 employees, and they're not afraid to hit the breaks and decelerate in order to achieve goals other than growth for growth's sake. But the impact of Askinosie Chocolate is anything but small. Today on the Growing with Purpose podcast, host Paul Spiegelman talks with Askinosie Chocolate founder and CEO, Shawn Askinosie. Shawn started Askinosie Chocolate in 2006 after leaving a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer. Shawn is the only chocolate maker to work directly with cocoa farmers on four continents to source the beans used to make their chocolate. But it doesn't stop there — Shawn also extends the company's open-book management program to their partners; profit-sharing and translating company financials with each farmer. Recently named one of Forbes' Small Giants: Best Small Companies in America, Askinosie Chocolate is sharing business ethics with the world through "Chocolate University," introducing students to the chocolate-making process and even taking a group to Tanzania every year. They also started a sustainability program that feeds 1,600 children a day in Tanzania and the Philippines, without ever collecting a single donation. In 2017, Shawn released a book with his daughter, Lawren Askinosie, about finding meaningful work that feeds your soul. From their factory and warehouse in Springfield, Missouri, Askinosie Chocolate is forging its own unique path to change the world through chocolate. In this episode, hear Shawn's ideas around reverse scale and deceleration, extending open-book management to company partners, and how entrepreneurship can help heal grief.

Shawn Askinosie shares: · How to create a work life that reflects what’s most important, so that it’s not a drain on physical and mental energy · How to use the principles of “integrated kinship” in order to achieve your business’ calling · “Success” no longer translates to “profitable” alone—it also encompasses happiness, purpose, and community · Despite their inclination, most entrepreneurs are skeptical that their business can have a purpose beyond making a profit. Askinosie says, there’s no need to wait for your business to live out a calling…begin now · The business philosophy of “reverse scale” not to get bigger, but to get better at staying small. Meaningful Work is not a book about “saving the world,” but how positive change begins with individual action. It’s a book for anyone who may be successful but unsettled, in a hurry for answers, and ready for the next journey, or anyone just starting out and looking for the on-ramp. It’s a story about Shawn did it, how he is still doing it, and how others can do it too. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shawn Askinosie is the founder of Askinosie Chocolate.
