DREAM. THINK. DO.

Kris Cody is the CEO and founder of a freakishly cool clothing company…  Paka Apparel!  While in college… Kris took a trip to Peru and while he was there… he came across a sweater made with wool from alpaca fiber.  He loved the thing… and when he came back to the states… he realized all of his friends wanted one too.  As Kris started to dream about the possibilities… he was also struck with the thought of sourcing everything right from Peru… from the families that he'd interacted with on his trip.  He also loved the thought of hiring local women to craft sweaters and clothing he could send around the world. With that dream in mind… Kris started a company called Paka Apparel in 2017.  He fueled the launch of Paka with a Kickstarter campaign that initially had a goal of $20,000 and they hit that in under 24 hours.  Kris and the campaign went on to raise more than $350,000 in 30 days.  From that exciting start… Paka has now created a line of washable alpaca apparel and ethical performance outerwear, along with Paka's tried and true sweaters, hoodies and socks. And get this.  Paka Apparel… under Kris's leadership… has been celebrated for their efforts to localize Paka's supply chain:  All of Paka's alpaca fiber is sourced from free-roaming herds in Peru. 90% of products are manufactured in Peru. And… over 100 Quechua (keCHwa) women weavers are employed and Paka pays them a wage that's 4x the living wage in Peru!  And the clothing looks awesome too!   I'm loving this story!  And Kris is obviously living the DREAM THINK DO life… so let's get to this!   MORE INFO ON KRIS: Find out more about PAKA: www.pakaapparel.com/ Find Kris on Instagram: instagram.com/kris_cody/ Find PAKA on Instagram: instagram.com/paka/ You can learn more about Kris Cody here: https://bit.ly/3Plba2n HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING A LIFE COACH? I just love out “curiosity” led him to take that initial trip to Peru.  And how finding that one sweater led him to starting a MOVEMENT. By the way… that's exactly what I think PAKA is.  Sure… it's a freakishly cool clothing brand.  But… I think Kris and his team are starting a MOVEMENT… one small step at a time. How about YOU?  How might you apply the concepts he was talking about to start a MOVEMENT of your own? You sure don't need to launch a clothing brand… but how could you “follow YOUR curiosity” to find more of the things YOU were put on the planet to do? By the way… Kris is young and he started young.  And that's awesome!!! But I think that his approach can be applied to ANY stage of life… especially if you give yourself permission to take small but intentional steps forward! Want proof?  Check out THIS EPISODE where I interview Shawn Askinosie about how he left a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer to start a bean-to-bar chocolate factory.  He was in his mid-50's when he started that journey… and he… as Kris would say, “kept following his curiosity” and he's never looked back.  By the way… Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch, award-winning chocolate factory located in Springfield, Missouri. They source 100%  of their cocoa beans directly from farmers across the globe. Askinosie Chocolate was recently named one of the 25 Best Small Companies in America by Forbes and Shawn himself was named by “O,” Oprah's magazine, as one of the 15 guys who is literally saving the world. Very cool. Okay… now you know the question is coming!  Are you ready?   Here it is: What's something (BIG or small) YOU want to do as a result of hearing THIS episode?  Lastly… PLEASE share this powerful conversation with a friend or family member who might be needing it… right now!  They'll thank you! And hey… remember… I believe in you! - Mitch  Episode Minute By Minute:  0:00 Welcome back! Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight

Best selling author, social enterprise founder, CEO and social impact pioneer: Shawn Askinosie shares the true benefits of understanding your supply chain. Shawn setup Askinosie Chocolate 16 years ago with his daughter Lawren and was recently named by Forbes “One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America.” He's been named by O, The Oprah Magazine, “One of 15 Guys Who Are Saving the World” and has an Amazon #1 bestselling book titled “Meaningful Work: The Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul.” In this podcast discussion, Shawn sheds light on the efforts and rewards of knowing who his cocoa growers are; how he's making globalisation work for him; and why now is the time for good cash flow management. He dives candidly into how his father's death spurred an innate desire to “deep work,” triggered his abandonment of a 20 year legal career and paved the way to his true calling: chocolate. From working across his value chains, Shawn cites a key takeaway: “I aspire to continue to learn from them about this notion of ‘enough' – how farmers demonstrate the joy of what seems so small.” To the big businesses, he says: “there is a way for your big business, to engage in the supply chain in a way that will change your life.” “If we're not at the tip top levels asking how much is enough, then nothing will be enough. I think that we have runaway greed that forgets why we're doing this, what our purpose is. And I'm fearful of this. But by the same token, I'm very optimistic for the future of capitalism, because I believe that we're in the midst of a sea change.” Listen to the full podcast here. Welcome to our special “Dream Together” Q&A series.  We're going after the biggest questions we've received over our 15 years of BIG Dream Gatherings.  That's right.  As we held these events around the country, we'd always wrap up with a Q&A with the audience. That's when we'd go after the biggest questions and the biggest challenges people face when moving forward on their dreams and goals. In today's episode, I'm going to offer some simple but powerful strategies to help you to get CLEAR and help you to get STARTED.  So… let's do this. RESOURCES: Episode 195: Shawn Askinosie: Finding Your Call and Feeding Your Soul: www.mitchmatthews.com/195  Episode 250: 3 Things I've learned from 250 Episodes of DREAM THINK DO  (I talk about perfectionism in this one!) https://mitchmatthews.com/250/ Episode 262: Dan Grec: Finding Happiness Amid Chaos: https://mitchmatthews.com/262/ THE “DREAM TOGETHER” APP IS HERE! That's right! Our DREAM TOGETHER App is here! The “Dream Together” app is designed to help you clarify your goals as well as connect with like-minded individuals so you can “dream together” to make those dreams (big or small) a reality! So… HERE ARE THE STEPS: STEP 1: Download the app. Find “Dream Together” for your Apple Device: HERE Find “Dream Together” for your Android Device: HERE STEP 2: Sign up and enter the group code: dreamthinkdo STEP 3: Be inspired by the dreams that are already there.  Then… follow and encourage a dream or two! STEP 4: Post at least one of your own dreams… and then invite friends to join you so you can DREAM TOGETHER! Let's do this! MORE ABOUT THE EPISODE: Okay… so as we've held our BIG Dream Gatherings around the country over the last 15 years… we'd always try to include a Q&A session at the end. Now… if you're new to DREAM THINK DO… and you're not familiar with what a BIG DREAM GATHERING is… the short version of the story is… these are fun… HIGHLY interactive events that we'd hold… that would bring people together in a room… anywhere from 30 to 800 people at a time… I'd kick it off with a talk… but then we'd have people write down some of their goals and dreams on sheets of paper… post them on the walls… and then we'd invite everyone to go around the room to look at each other's dreams and then write notes on the “dream sheets.”   People could offer encouragement… ideas… suggestions and offers to help.   Now… with the current season we're in… we've created an APP called “Dream Together” to provide the same opportunity… to… well… dream together… but now instead of being in the same room… we can do it from our phones and dream with people around the world. It's pretty cool! Well… as I was saying… when we'd hold our BIG DREAM GATHERINGS… we'd do a Q&A at the end to give people the chance to ask any questions about things that were holding them back. And one of the biggest questions… one of the most common questions… that would almost ALWAYS come up was… “Which dream do I go after?” It makes sense though… right?  People would come to this event… and come up with a couple… all the way to sometimes 20… to 30… dreams. STORY ABOUT IAN. So… they get excited… but then their brain starts to spin because they're thinking, “Great!  Now that I have clarity on all these things I want to do… things I could do… where do I start?  Which one should I go after first?” And this is an important question for several reasons. 1. If you're a perfectionist… this question can KILL your dreams before you even get started!  You're sooooooooo worried about starting out with the PERFECT choice… and doing it PERFECTLY… that you never start. “Perfectionism is the mother of Procrastination.” - Michael Hyatt “The fastest way to break the cycle of perfectionism is to give up the idea of doing it perfectly and instead embrace uncertainty and imperfection.” - Arianna Huffington Or as I like to say… “Progress beats perfection.” And… “Let's learn as we go!”   2. Another reason it's a BIG question is… a lot of people are VERY busy… busy schedules… lots pulling at you… lots on your plate.  You probably don't have TONS and TONS of time… days and days… to just throw around.  SO… you want to be smart with how you're spending your time.  Hey… you're listening to DREAM THINK DO… so I'm betting you don't want to waste a day of the time you've got on this rock.  Am I right? Those are 2 reasons… and there are many more.  BUT… since we're keeping this episode at 15 minutes… we'll leave it at that. So let's get to those questions I promised you. All right… maybe you've been using the DREAM TOGETHER app… and you've got a few dreams in mind… let's help you decide on which one to go after next. So… the first question I like to ask in this scenario is…  “Of all the dreams and goals you could go after… which might be the best in THIS season of your life?” It's a simple… but powerful question. It's all about thinking about your CURRENT SEASON… and then weighing out which dreams would be the best fit for you… right now? And I think it is important to mention… that just because a dream isn't right for “this season” of your life… it doesn't mean that's a bad dream… or a silly dream.  It's just not right for THIS season.  So give yourself some grace and say, “It's a good dream… it's just not for right now.” At the same time… a powerful follow up to our SEASON question can be: “What might be a way to take a small but significant step towards one of my bigger dreams?” I'll give you a few examples. You may have a big dream of traveling the globe… but right now… there's a flippin' pandemic… so it's not physically possible… or maybe you're in college and the funds just aren't there quite yet… or… you've got little kids and you're navigating a full house… so the thought of global travels lights you up… but then almost starts to feel soul crushing… because it might be a while. Well… what if you gave yourself permission to run some experiments… To run some drills. To have some fun with it. What if you gave yourself permission to take 15 minutes a few times a week… to plan a dream trip.  To ask, “If I had the time… where would I go?” Or… “How have people like me taken a trip like this?”  And do some research. Heck… we've even talked to people about this very thing on DREAM THINK DO. People like Dan Grec… who got the idea to drive from Alaska to Argentina in a Jeep.  He didn't have the money or the vacation time when he got hit with the idea… but over 3 years… he just gave himself permission to do the research on how he MIGHT do it.  And then gave himself permission to take mini-trips… to see if he even liked taking short road trips… to be sure he'd actually want to do a marathon trip like that.  But as he kept experimenting… he kept falling deeper and deeper into more loooooooove with the dream.  AND he kept finding more doors opening to make it possible.  And the dream… the one that seemed IMPOSSIBLE when he started… became a reality.  He drove from Alaska to Argentina… and then he drove AROUND Africa… and he continues on… and adventure travel and photography is now his day job.  Just because he was willing to ask these two questions. https://mitchmatthews.com/262/ Another example… might be… that you don't LOVE your current job… and one of your big dreams is to find a job… or a career that you LOVE.  BUT you're not even sure what THAT dream career might be. Well… maybe you can ask yourself… “What might be some small but significant steps towards figuring this out?” https://mitchmatthews.com/195   I'll give you an example of this type of approach.  In episode 195, I talked with Shawn Askinosie who had been a successful criminal defense lawyer… but he'd fallen out of love with it.  So he started to give himself room to experiment with other types of types of work.  As he did… he allowed himself to take night classes, watch TED talks, invite people he was curious about to coffee to hear more about what they did… and as he did that… he discovered an unknown passion for chocolate.   This journey eventually inspired him to start a bean-to-bar chocolate factory and he's never looked back.  And NOW…  Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch, award-winning chocolate factory located in Springfield, Missouri.  They source 100% of their cocoa beans directly from farmers across the globe… and Shawn is active in helping to create sustainable farming in each area he partners with. NOT ONLY THAT… but Askinosie Chocolate was recently named one of the 25 Best Small Companies in America by Forbes and Shawn himself was named by “O magazine,” and Oprah Winfrey as one of the 15 guys who is literally saving the world.  How cool is that?   But he found that passion… because he was willing to give himself permission to DREAM… to start small… to experiment… and to learn as he went. His dream was to find his DREAM CAREER. But he didn't know what that was.  So he asked a better question for THAT season. “What might be some small but significant steps towards figuring this out?” So… if you've been wrestling with the question: Which Dream should I go after right now?” Some questions to ask yourself can be: “Of all the dreams and goals you could go after…  which might be a good one in THIS season of your life?”   If the dream seems TOO big to pursue right now, you can ask: “What might be a way to take some  small but significant step towards  one of my bigger dreams?” And hey… if your dream feels pretty BROAD… like how Shawn wanted to find his next dream career, but he wasn't sure what that might even be, you can ask:  “What might be some small but significant  steps towards figuring this out?” And then… it's all about giving yourself permission to START. Keep taking those small but significant steps forward… and more clarity… will come.  Not to mention some amazing experiences too!   It's like Abraham Maslow once said, “In any given moment we have two options: To step FORWARD INTO GROWTH  or to step back into SAFETY.” And hey… I don't know about you… but I find the best moments in life tend to come when we're growing.   Amen?  Amen. I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!: Let me know.  Join the conversation at mitchmatthews.com/316.  You'll be able to grab the questions we talked about… you can check out the episodes and interviews I mentioned… plus you can grab the DREAM TOGETHER app too… if you haven't. Also, know that we're going after topics like… “How do you ask for help on your dream?” and “how to make space for your dreams” in this DREAM TOGETHER series.  So be watching for those… and heck… leave a comment on subjects YOU would like me to go after! In 2005, Shawn Askinosie left a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer to start a bean-to-bar chocolate factory and never looked back. Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch, award-winning chocolate factory located in Springfield, Missouri, sourcing 100% of their beans directly from farmers. The only chocolate maker working directly with cocoa farmers on four continents, Shawn travels to regions of Ecuador, the Philippines and Tanzania to source cocoa beans for his chocolate. This allows the chocolate to be traced to the source and labeled authentic single origin. It also enables Askinosie Chocolate to profit share with the farmers, giving them a “Stake In the Outcome,” a principle he learned from author/entrepreneur Jack Stack. Recently named by Forbes "One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America", Askinosie Chocolate has also been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, on Bloomberg, MSNBCand numerous other national and international media outlets.

What would motivate someone to become a criminal defense lawyer? For 20 years. Then leave to become a humanitarian chocolatier? I’ve chosen this show with Shawn Askinosie as my first guest appearance on the Motive podcast because it got to the heart of my desired focus. His company, Askinosie Chocolate, was recently named by Forbes “One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America.” The Oprah Magazine “One of 15 Guys Who Are Saving the World.” Friends, if you are a chocolate lover...of real, fine chocolate, do yourself a favor. Go to Askinosie.com/. But to this show, Shawn's dad died at 14 and tore his world apart, he set a maniacal pace to accomplish big achievements and prove to God he didn't need him. He ultimately pursued law school and withstood 11 law school rejections, and went on to have an exemplary career. But he never overcame his dad's sickness and death. This led him to volunteering for palliative care at a hospital and starting a five year journey to a different vocation. A significant statement from him in this episode is this, “It’s a funny paradox, but the first step in sorting myself out was actually not to think about myself, and instead to focus on other people.” Shawn wrote a book that was first sent to me, along with some great chocolate, by my Dad, Dan Miller, who got to know and greatly appreciate Shawn. The book is called, Meaningful Work - A Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul. I highly recommend it and you can find it wherever you buy books, and at his website, shawnaskinosie. Let me say this, if you want a great taste of what this Motive podcast is about, this is a show to listen to.

This episode of The  Entrepreneurial You   is all about this sweet business.   Here is a snippet of what  Shawn shared:   "The business is a Cause. And the cause supports the business; it's a circle. And so what I mean by that is, when I started the company I knew that I wanted to directly engage with Farmers. I wanted to meet them. I wanted to be in their homes. I wanted to get to know them and I've done that for 15 years. This next time I travel, whenever that'll be (after a vaccine then) It'll be my 45th origin trip since I started to meet with farmers, and that's a lot of travel.    Then when I became You know engaged with them and understood what was happening in their communities, it was a very natural step for us to say. not can we fix this, this is a very important notion not can we come in as the great white Savior and solve all your problems, The question is can we be your partner? Can we be your friend? And is there a way for us to together contribute to some of these issues in your village? And so that's the way it started in the school lunch program started about 12 years ago in the Philippines."   Listen to the episode and let us know what is your biggest takeaway.   Connect with Shawn Askinosie:   Website   Visit our Sponsor: Jamaica Stock Exchange   Email: Heneka Watkis-Porter    Support The Entrepreneurial You here fo US$5.00 monthly: https://glow.fm/tey.   Looking for spiritual upliftment? In 2005, Shawn Askinosie left a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer to start a bean to bar chocolate factory and never looked back. The Askinosie Chocolate mission is to serve their farmers, their neighborhood, their customers and each other, sharing the Askinosie Chocolate experience by leaving the world a better place than they found it. The company is currently sustainably feeding over 1,600 students per day in Tanzania and the Philippines, without any donations. Founded at the forefront of the American craft chocolate revolution and regarded by many as a vanguard in the industry, Askinosie Chocolate sets the standard: they are one of the few chocolate makers in the world who press their own cocoa butter (to make their chocolate truly single origin) and the only American craft chocolate maker to produce a natural cocoa powder; they were the first American craft chocolate makers to create white chocolate, as well as a chocolate hazelnut spread (says The New York Times: “one spoonful of Askinosie’s Chocolate Hazelnut Spread and all memory of Nutella is gone”). Shawn was named by O, The Oprah Magazine "One of 15 Guys Who Are Saving the World." They said, "Why we're fans: The philanthropically-minded chocolate entrepreneur aims to get students thinking about business ethics in a way that could have ripple effects for generations." For his efforts in "Advancing food standards... by creating social, economic, and environmental impact", Shawn was awarded Top Business Leader of the Year in 2013 by the Specialty Food Association. Shawn has been awarded honorary doctorates from University of Missouri-Columbia and Missouri State University. In 2015, Askinosie Chocolate was awarded a complimentary membership to the Clinton Global Initiative for the company’s social efforts around the world. Seth Godin, entrepreneur and author, recently praised the company's model: "[Shawn] has built a practice of creating a worthwhile luxury good that directly benefits people. Not sort of. Not a little. But directly.” Askinosie Chocolate has received 3 Good Food Awards, considered to be the Oscars of food; 6 silver awards from the Specialty Food Association; and 7 International Chocolate Awards, including the Gold World Award for the Dark Chocolate + Licorice bar. The small team at Askinosie works directly with all of their retailers and sells their chocolate into specialty food stores, luxury boutiques, and high-end grocery chains throughout the US in nearly all fifty states and across the globe. Shawn's book, recently released, co-written with his daughter Lawren, published by Penguin titled "Meaningful Work: The Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul" is an Amazon #1 New Release. Read Seth Godin's review of the book here. He is a Family Brother at Assumption Abbey, a Trappist monastery near Ava, Missouri and the co-founder of Lost & Found, a grief center serving children and families in Southwest Missouri.

I fundamentally believe that if everyone in this world meditated in their own way or gave meditating a shot it would transform their lives. For my entire life whenever I heard the word “meditation” I immediately dismissed it.A picture of a hippie chanting “OOOOOM” popped into my mind every single time.I eventually began to shift my view after I learned Oprah Winfrey, Ray Dalio, meditated and praised it highly for their success. I thought meditation was something you did to relax like taking a pill or going for a walk.I was far from the truth. I began my meditation journey on a bus October 29th, 2016. I downloaded the Headspace app…put on my headphones..closed my eyes and followed the instructions.I opened my eyes 10 minutes later…and everything was different. I didn’t know how to describe it or but things were just different...I don’t have any science to describe this but anecdotally speaking…I believe my attention muscle was refocused and shifted. For the first time in my life, it felt like I was seeing things through a different lens. I was able to focus in on conversations and my surroundings a bit more instead of being stuck in my head all day.I consider October 29th, 2016 the first day of my consciously aware life. I continued my 10-15 minute meditation practice every single day from then on out. I missed a day here and there because I am still human. Here’s where things get interesting. Within only one week…the foundation of my entire internal world started shifting. I couldn’t articulate this at the time but I actually became MORE pissed and angry. It felt like the life I had created for 18 years was melting away.It felt like I was on the run from something. Luckily, at the time I didn’t understand the concept of self-development..because it felt like I was getting worse, not better. After another week I had a spiritual transformational experience in my life. It was a moment where I surrendered to myself…and understood that reality is a reflection of the exact decisions, choices, and effort I had ever made. What I learned was…Your Life = Subject (you) x Environment Which means if you close your eyes and focus on your breath, in the present moment you are essentially creating your own environment and allowing a deep submersion of who you really are. My meditation practice has been the foundation of my existence. Every morning I meditate for 20-30 minutes and 5-10 minutes at night. I view mindfulness meditation as an exponential meta-skill that improves every single thing you do. Meditation isn't something you necessarily do to become unstressed. You meditate to find out why you're stressed. Check out this amazing episode from three unbelievably successful, peaceful and happy individuals, Rob Dube, David Meltzer and Chip Conley.New York Times bestselling author and hospitality entrepreneur, Chip Conley is a leader at the forefront of the sharing economy. Shawn Askinosie is CEO and Founder of Askinosie Chocolate as well as author of the book Meaningful Work: A Quest to Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul. Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch, award-winning chocolate factory located in Springfield, Missouri, sourcing 100% of their beans directly from farmers in regions all over the world and sharing the profits with them. The Askinosie Chocolate mission is to serve farmers, their neighborhoods, their customers, and each other by leaving the world a better place than they found it. So far the company has provided over a million school lunches to malnourished children in Tanzania and the Philippines, without any donations. Askinosie Chocolate was named by Forbes as “One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America” and Shawn was also named by O, The Oprah Magazine, as “One of 15 Guys Who Are Saving the World.”In this episode, Stew and Shawn discuss Shawn’s remarkable personal journey from being a phenomenally successful criminal lawyer, who never lost a case, to a life-changing moment that caused him to realize he needed to leave the law. Shawn speaks candidly about the imperative to explore one’s grief, one’s “pain point,” helping others to help oneself. He co-founded a The Lost and Found Grief Center and worked in a palliative care unit, “searching, searching, searching” for five years before finding his way to chocolate making and working intimately, and directly without delegating, with indigenous cocoa bean farmers in the Amazon and Tanzania. Shawn’s story is honest, sometimes wrenching, and inspirational. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The only chocolate maker working directly with cocoa farmers on four continents, Shawn travels to regions of Ecuador, the Philippines and Tanzania to source cocoa beans for his chocolate. This allows the chocolate to be traced to the source and labeled authentic single origin. It also enables Askinosie Chocolate to profit share with the farmers, giving them a “Stake In the Outcome,” a principle he learned from author/entrepreneur Jack Stack.Recently named by Forbes "One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America", Askinosie Chocolate has also been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, on Bloomberg, MSNBCand numerous other national and international media outlets. Founded at the forefront of the American craft chocolate revolution and regarded by many as a vanguard in the industry, Askinosie Chocolate sets the standard: they are one of the few chocolate makers in the world who press their own cocoa butter (to make their chocolate truly single origin) and the only American craft chocolate maker to produce a natural cocoa powder; they were the first American craft chocolate makers to create white chocolate, as well as a chocolate hazelnut spread (says The New York Times: “one spoonful of Askinosie’s Chocolate Hazelnut Spread and all memory of Nutella is gone”).Shawn was named by O, The Oprah Magazine "One of 15 Guys Who Are Saving the World." They said, "Why we're fans: The philanthropically-minded chocolate entrepreneur aims to get students thinking about business ethics in a way that could have ripple effects for generations." For his efforts in "Advancing food standards... by creating social, economic, and environmental impact", Shawn was awarded Top Business Leader of the Year in 2013 by the Specialty Food Association. But directly.”Askinosie Chocolate has received 3 Good Food Awards, considered to be the Oscars of food; 6 silver awards from the Specialty Food Association; and 7 International Chocolate Awards, including the Gold World Award for the Dark Chocolate + Licorice bar. The small team at Askinosie works directly with all of their retailers and sells their chocolate into specialty food stores, luxury boutiques, and high-end grocery chains throughout the US in nearly all fifty states and across the globe.Shawn's book, recently released, co-written with his daughter Lawren, published by Penguin titled "Meaningful Work: The Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul" is an Amazon #1 New Release. Back in 2005, my guest, Shawn Askinosie left a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer to start a bean-to-bar chocolate factory and he's never looked back. Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch, award-winning chocolate factory located in Springfield, Missouri. They source 100%  of their cocoa beans directly from farmers across the globe. Askinosie Chocolate was recently named one of the 25 Best Small Companies in America by Forbes and Shawn himself was named by "O," Oprah's magazine, as one of the 15 guys who is literally saving the world. Very cool. Shawn and his daughter, Lawren, who is the Chief Marketing Officer for Askinosie, recently published a book together called Meaningful Work: A Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul. One reviewer wrote, "'Meaningful Work is not only a book about saving the world, it's about how businesses can and should solve problems in the world, and how positive change begins with individual action." I love it. Listen To The Podcast: RESOURCES: Meaningful Work Book: http://bit.ly/2NU9KNc Website: askinosie.com INTERVIEW: I knew when I heard his story that I had to have Shawn join us for an episode. Shawn, welcome to DREAM THINK DO. Thank you, Mitch. Appreciate the intro and I'm looking forward to this. Me too! You know, I look forward to every interview, but some I look forward to just a little bit more than others. I've been really, really excited about this. Many DREAM THINK DO-ers, have navigated a career change, or are contemplating a career change. How did you go from defense attorney back in 2005 and decide you want to make chocolate? The way it started, I loved my job and I think a lot of your listeners can probably relate to what I'm about to say, but I loved it and I loved it for a long time. I did it for almost 20 years. I never lost a criminal jury trial. Wow! I specialized in super serious felony cases and built my reputation in the defense of murder cases. To say that comes with a little stress would be an understatement. No kidding! When you love what you're doing, it doesn't feel stressful until you stop loving it, and that's what happened. I stopped loving it But I didn't have any hobbies, I didn't have an idea of anything else to do. I'd always wanted to be a lawyer. The real struggle for me in this transition, which was five years long by the way, was a struggle of choices. I just didn't feel drawn. I didn't feel called. I couldn't find my vocation. It seemed as though the more desperate I became, the further away it was from my reach, so to speak. Then it was just like this vicious circle of, "What's going to happen?" I really prayed a very simple prayer that went like this: "Dear God, please give me something else to do." I said that, sometimes many times a day, but I said it every day for almost five years. It was just a simple prayer, one born of desperation. I had no hobbies at first, so I started some hobbies. I bought a Big Green Egg grill and did all the meals on the Big Green Egg and loved it. Then I started baking, making cupcakes. I made thousands of cupcakes. Then I started making chocolate desserts and I had no idea where chocolate came from, zero. But one day, I was driving to a distant relative, driving to her funeral, and it was out near my grandparent's farm about an hour from here in southwest Missouri. I just had this idea. "Hey, what about making chocolate from scratch?" I had no idea where it came from. Yeah, where does that come from? Yeah. And this is the doing part. Within three months of that light bulb, I was in the Amazon, learning how farmers influence the flavor of chocolate by how they harvest the cocoa beans. Then I started to wind down my law practice. I bought equipment from all over the world, completed my last jury trial, and here we are. That's incredible. I love that. I know we've been back and forth a little bit,

Have you ever wondered how you can effectively scale a service-based business without losing quality and your sanity? Today’s guest expert shares a case study on how she scaled a reception business to 500 employees and $50 million dollars.   15 years ago, Jill Nelson started from humble beginnings, but has grown her business, Ruby Receptionists, into a four-time winner of FORTUNE magazine’s top five Best Small Companies to Work for, and has helped over 8,000 small businesses across the US service and create loyal customers. Today, she shares a case study of how she was able to make it all possible.   Jill found out after graduating from university that her accounting degree just wasn’t for her. On a whim, she took a receptionist position and that’s when things clicked. She learned that there was real value in having a personal connection while growing a successful business. She was a critical touch point for the company.   Jill wanted to create an executive suite, but she had no money and she had no business experience. After obtaining a business loan, she was able to launch everything an executive suite could offer… minus the office space. Jill used her resources wisely and learned early on what her unique value proposition was and used it to her advantage.   With an extreme focus on friendly and attentive customer service, Jill’s client feedback praised the receptionist for making an excellent first impression on their customers and helping them land new client deals because he/she sounded professional and knowledgeable over the phone.   This very friendly and personalized service can be difficult to scale up, but Jill has managed to grow it to nearly 500 employees and still retain a personalized feel for each of her customers.   Jill has maintained this consistency by having a lot of systems in place and also by their trademarked ‘service pyramid’ that outlines clearly their business model and how they deliver exceptional service to their customers. The service pyramid is a bit of a regulation cheatsheet meets personalize service that incentivizes rule breaking.   Interview Links: Callruby.com Jill on LinkedIn Callruby.com/scalingupbusiness   Resources: Scaling Up for Business Growth Workshops: Take the first step to mastering the Rockefeller Habits by attending one of our workshops. It is this passion that has become the driving force behind imageOnes success. Rob has completed 14 marathons and is an avid meditator and loves spending time in Northern Michigan with his family and friends. ----- My guest today has some surprising ways to tap into his creativity and increase his success. Today, I’m with Rob Dube and talking to him about his thoughts regarding working smarter and not harder. What he has to say is not exactly what you might think the owner of a company that Forbes named one of the “Best Small Companies” would say though. According to Rob — and he has the backing of researching and the fact that leaders all over the world embrace this strategy — that slowing down is the key to unlocking both your creativity and your leadership potential. Putting away your technology opens up the mind and relieves stress. This is because silence enables the mind to clear away chaotic thoughts and clarity emerges. Successful business CEOs and all branches of the military practice some form of meditation. If you’re going to become a leader, you have to give your company your full energy and your employees your full presence. If you don’t those that rely on you can feel the disconnect. You know that old story of a successful criminal defense lawyer who quits practicing law to start a bean to bar chocolate factory? Yeah...it’s a new story for me too. But that is the story of Shawn Askinosie. Shawn is a remarkable human being. Not because Oprah Magazine named him “One of 15 Guys Who Are Saving the World” or because Forbes named his small batch, award winning chocolate factory, Askinosie Chocolate ‘One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America’ (both of which are true by the way). It’s because Shawn holds a contemplative vision for his life and business to create a more just and loving world. Askinosie Chocolate is a direct trade business that profit shares with their partners, the cocoa farmers, from around the world. Shawn and his team are recasting how a profitable business can operate in the world with integrity, passion and humility. In this conversation you will get a taste for Shawn’s values as he shares about his experience as a Family Brother at Assumption Abbey, how he recognizes the relationship between joy and sorrow, the lasting impact of his 6th grade teacher, why he wanted Askinosie Chocolate to be direct trade, profit sharing and open book management from its inception,... and what the hell he means by the phrase, ‘It not about the chocolate, it’s about the chocolate. This is just a taste of Shawn’s deeply empowering book, Meaningful Work: A Quest to Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul. You can buy the book, Meaningful Work, wherever beautiful books are sold. To learn more about Shawn visit (and order chocolate) at askinosie.com.

In 2005, Shawn Askinosie left a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer to start a bean to bar chocolate factory and never looked back. Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch, award winning chocolate factory located in Springfield, Missouri, sourcing 100% of their beans directly from farmers. He is a Family Brother at Assumption Abbey, a Trappist monastery near Ava, Missouri and the co-founder of Lost & Found, a grief center serving children and families in Southwest Missouri. https://www.askinosie.com/

Shawn Askinosie shares: · How to create a work life that reflects what’s most important, so that it’s not a drain on physical and mental energy · How to use the principles of “integrated kinship” in order to achieve your business’ calling · “Success” no longer translates to “profitable” alone—it also encompasses happiness, purpose, and community · Despite their inclination, most entrepreneurs are skeptical that their business can have a purpose beyond making a profit. Askinosie says, there’s no need to wait for your business to live out a calling…begin now · The business philosophy of “reverse scale” not to get bigger, but to get better at staying small. Meaningful Work is not a book about “saving the world,” but how positive change begins with individual action. It’s a book for anyone who may be successful but unsettled, in a hurry for answers, and ready for the next journey, or anyone just starting out and looking for the on-ramp. It’s a story about Shawn did it, how he is still doing it, and how others can do it too. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shawn Askinosie is the founder of Askinosie Chocolate.
