Horton III, assistant professor of journalism at Missouri State University, to explore how fathers can foster healthy screen time habits in the digital age. With humor and honesty, the conversation spans early parenting decisions to teen technology use, revealing both the risks and the opportunities that screen-based media present for families. You've got to be hands-on with it.” [12:46] – “Algorithms influence our choices and what we see on social media.” [16:27] – “When you're not included in that group, you're really not included.” [21:16] – “I would get an alert… so I could have a conversation.” [29:53] – “Every Sunday night… no TVs, no phones… what is one goal you have for this week?” Resources

The hosts also delve into details regarding the upcoming Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) School Board Election on April 8, from election day resources to absentee voting information. Kurt Schmidt's life story reads like an epic narrative of resilience, hope, and transformation. From his early days as a culinary school graduate to becoming a pivotal figure in the mental health community, Kurt's journey is a testament to the power of change and the human spirit's capacity to overcome. Kurt's academic journey began at Purdue University, where he earned a bachelor's degree, laying the groundwork for a diverse professional path that would span the restaurant industry, corporate food service, supply chain, and technology sectors. However, beneath the surface of these achievements, Kurt was waging a personal battle with substance use that would shape the course of his life. At the young age of 22, Kurt faced his first inpatient treatment following multiple attempts at detox, marking the beginning of a tumultuous struggle with addiction. Despite these challenges, he managed to carve out a semblance of professional success, a testament to his innate resilience and determination. Yet, the specter of addiction loomed large, leading to multiple treatments throughout his twenties. The stark warnings from health professionals—that he would not survive if he continued to drink—were a wake-up call. Kurt's health crises, including a fatty liver diagnosis and multiple seizures due to withdrawal, underscored the dire consequences of his path. But Kurt's story is not one of despair, but rather of profound transformation. It's a narrative that underscores the possibility of recovery, even from the depths of addiction. His journey to sobriety is punctuated by personal milestones and professional achievements, including his roles as a Certified Peer Support Specialist and Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), equipped with an MSW from Missouri State University and an MBA from Webster University. Eric welcomes Professor Christopher Lynch, Chair of the Political Science Department at Missouri State University, the editor and translator of the most recent edition of Machiavelli's The Art of War and author of Machiavelli on War (Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 2023). They discuss Machiavelli as statesman, military leader and diplomat and Machiavelli as Political Philosopher, The Art of War as a treatise on combined arms warfighting, Machiavelli as the father of modern grand strategy, his views on war as revealed not only in the Art of War but his posthumously published works The Prince and The Discourses on Livy, whether Machiavelli was a "teacher of evil," his role as one of the progenitors of "realism" in international affairs, whether his teachings prefigure our modern notions of strategic competition between authoritarian states and liberal democracies and "the Prince's Dilemma" -- or what is the proper relationship between political authorities and military leaders, and both the time-bound and timeless nature of Machiavell's arguments. https://a.co/d/0dxfml05 Shield of the Republic is a Bulwark podcast co-sponsored by the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia.
