The spirit of the horse exists in the subconscious minds of humans and takes shape in various forms, whether as a symbol of fertility in the land, as in Celtic mythology, or as a psychopomp, which leads the dead to the next world. The horse has made its way into the current of our collective unconscious as a universal archetype.Horse Magick contains spells, rituals, chants, and meditations for many purposes, loosely based around equine imagery. Numerous traditions are represented, as are many deities, including Athena, Epona, and Baba Yaga. No contact with actual horses is required.Through the use of spells and rituals, readers are able to magickally ride to their chosen destinies and fulfill their desires. Workings involve crystals, candles, and Tarot cards, items easily accessible for most readers.
The term “ally” is often used to describe the ways in which people can support those from marginalized and underrepresented groups. But in an era of increasingly divisive politics, and heightened discrimination and prejudice, does being an ally go far enough? In this episode of the “Dear Beth” podcast, we explore what it means to be an accomplice: someone willing to take risks (personally and professionally) in order to stand up for (and stand with) people from marginalized and underrepresented groups. Special co-host Lawren Trotchie, a Métis lawyer, joins Leah Howie and Jen Quesnel in the studio. Feature guest is Courtenay Phillips, a Cree lawyer who practices privacy law. Courtenay and Lawren describe their experiences moving through both law school and the legal profession as Indigenous women lawyers and how having strong allies and accomplices made a difference in their lives. Courtenay offers insights on how lawyers and law societies can stand boldly alongside those who need support, even if it means taking some big risks. We hear perspectives from Rachel Loewen Walker, assistant professor and program director in women and gender studies and political studies, Brenda Yuen, lawyer and research advisor with Cowichan Tribes, diversity equity and inclusion consultant Prasanna Ranganathan, and entertainment lawyer and Canadian musician Safwan Javed. And in our Letters segment, Beth Bilson explores the challenges students from underrepresented groups encounter when attending law school. She is joined by law students Jordan Calladine and Fakeha Jamil who speak candidly about their encountering prejudice and discrimination in and outside the law school, and the type of future they envision for themselves as practicing lawyers. Lawren Askinosie grew up around craft chocolate, and with craft chocolate. Still in high school when her father transitioned from courtroom to chocolate-making and started one of the first small batch chocolate factories in America, she assisted him in almost every facet of their new life as chocolate makers—from working the storefront to developing marketing material. Eager to jump into the family business full-time Lawren began college early and upon graduation at 20, dove headfirst into learning the ins and outs of operating a bean-to-bar chocolate factory, building a brand, and marketing and selling craft chocolate. Now the Chief Marketing Officer of the direct trade business that Forbes recently named “One of the 25 Best Small Companies In America,” Lawren is passionate about more than helping to shape the conversation around craft chocolate. She loves assisting Shawn to build sustainable relationships with smallholder cocoa farmers (especially female farmers), telling those stories, and finding innovative ways to connect the dots between the direct trade model, quality, and community. A passionate advocate for women, Lawren works to empower women through every aspect of the business from helping to seek out female-led farmer groups to facilitating girls empowerment initiatives in Askinosie's cocoa origin communities. Lawren's first book, which she co-authored with her father, called Meaningful Work: A Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling And Feed Your Soul is available here.Lawren is based in Austin, TX with her husband and three dogs (we lovingly call it "The Austin Annex"). Because technology, she's able to do her job remotely but also spends tons of time at the chocolate factory in Springfield. When she's not chocolate-ing or traveling, she's eating her way through Austin (with particular emphasis on tacos, BBQ and margaritas) and listening to live music.Lawren serves on the board of Girls Empowerment Network, a Texas-based nonprofit that seeks to ignite the power in girls throughout the state by teaching them self-efficacy. Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight
Best selling author, social enterprise founder, CEO and social impact pioneer: Shawn Askinosie shares the true benefits of understanding your supply chain. Shawn setup Askinosie Chocolate 16 years ago with his daughter Lawren and was recently named by Forbes “One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America.” He's been named by O, The Oprah Magazine, “One of 15 Guys Who Are Saving the World” and has an Amazon #1 bestselling book titled “Meaningful Work: The Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul.” In this podcast discussion, Shawn sheds light on the efforts and rewards of knowing who his cocoa growers are; how he's making globalisation work for him; and why now is the time for good cash flow management. He dives candidly into how his father's death spurred an innate desire to “deep work,” triggered his abandonment of a 20 year legal career and paved the way to his true calling: chocolate. From working across his value chains, Shawn cites a key takeaway: “I aspire to continue to learn from them about this notion of ‘enough' – how farmers demonstrate the joy of what seems so small.” To the big businesses, he says: “there is a way for your big business, to engage in the supply chain in a way that will change your life.” “If we're not at the tip top levels asking how much is enough, then nothing will be enough. I think that we have runaway greed that forgets why we're doing this, what our purpose is. And I'm fearful of this. But by the same token, I'm very optimistic for the future of capitalism, because I believe that we're in the midst of a sea change.” Listen to the full podcast here. You'll get to hear about her business of YoungLiving and she approached and became one who used them herself. Her story of a gradual change within herself and her family made her dive right in to find the science behind them. It is a lifestyle for her family. We talk about seeing what is truly in the product and how others use it. It is a very real discussion of the process. Children are each different and you'll hear her heart as she talks about her children's needs and how she seeks to figure out what each personality needs and wants to grow. Making huge decisions and advocating for them. We talk of dance as an art and what it's like to grow up with that gift and how you can use that to benefit the world. As Lawren shares her story, we get to hear of her education process and the foundation laid for her. With firm thoughts on social media, we discuss unplugging. Lawren Leo's collection offers nine crooked paths hidden in perpetual shadow. Each is dark, yet alluring. Which will you take? Which story have you lived? Which story will you live next? Modern-day Fifth Avenue becomes the scene of a murder stretching back in time to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. A diva confronts long lost love and stolen gold during her final performance at the New York Metropolitan Opera House. A jet-set crowd gathers for Halloween as witchcraft, love, and celebrities collide on Fire Island. In the manner of Edgar Allen Poe and The Grimm Brothers, these love stories are wonderfully alarming and seductively tragic. A galaxy of engaging stories about the ultimate price of love. Enter the world of Love's Shadow: Nine Crooked Paths.
Fine art specialist and art consultant Lawren Joyce joins the podcast to discuss participating in her father's schemes, the mental load, mom groups, raising kids in the art world and more! Today, I'm honored to introduce Shawn Askinosie, coauthor with his daughter, Lawren, of the book, Meaningful Work: A Quest to Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul. Shawn is the founder of Askinosie Chocolate, which was named by Forbes as one of the 25 best small companies in America, and he was named by Oprah as one of 15 guys who are saving the world. Shawn is all about chocolate. I've tasted it, in fact, I have the 72% dark chocolate from Tanzania in front of me right now and it is amazing. And no, he didn't pay me to say that. But he and his chocolate company are also about so much more. Using his company’s revenues, Shawn's chocolate business has provided over a million meals to hungry students in Tanzania and the Philippines. They've delivered thousands of textbooks to schools and they've drilled water wells for villagers.
Along with the bear, horses are a primary creature associated with shamanism and traditions influenced by it. They appear in 25,000-year-old cave paintings, such as those at Lascaux. They find a role in the modern African diaspora traditions such as Haitian Vodou, whose devotees are called “horses” for the spirits who ride them during trances.

Show Notes "Men love to wonder, and that is the seed of science." - Ralph Waldo Emerson Have you ever thought about running a chocolate business and what that would mean for you? This episode of The Entrepreneurial You is all about this sweet business. Here is a snippet of what Shawn shared: "The business is a Cause. And the cause supports the business; it's a circle. And so what I mean by that is, when I started the company I knew that I wanted to directly engage with Farmers. I wanted to meet them. I wanted to be in their homes. I wanted to get to know them and I've done that for 15 years. This next time I travel, whenever that'll be (after a vaccine then) It'll be my 45th origin trip since I started to meet with farmers, and that's a lot of travel. Then when I became You know engaged with them and understood what was happening in their communities, it was a very natural step for us to say. not can we fix this, this is a very important notion not can we come in as the great white Savior and solve all your problems, The question is can we be your partner? Can we be your friend? And is there a way for us to together contribute to some of these issues in your village? And so that's the way it started in the school lunch program started about 12 years ago in the Philippines." Listen to the episode and let us know what is your biggest takeaway. In 2005, Shawn Askinosie left a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer to start a bean to bar chocolate factory and never looked back. Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch, award-winning chocolate factory located in Springfield, Missouri, sourcing 100% of their beans directly from farmers. The only chocolate maker working directly with cocoa farmers on four continents, Shawn travels to regions of Ecuador, the Philippines and Tanzania to source cocoa beans for his chocolate. This allows the chocolate to be traced to the source and labeled authentic single origin. It also enables Askinosie Chocolate to profit share with the farmers, giving them a “Stake In the Outcome,” a principle he learned from author/entrepreneur Jack Stack. Recently named by Forbes "One of the 25 Best Small Companies in America", Askinosie Chocolate has also been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, on Bloomberg, MSNBCand numerous other national and international media outlets. The Askinosie Chocolate mission is to serve their farmers, their neighborhood, their customers and each other, sharing the Askinosie Chocolate experience by leaving the world a better place than they found it. The company is currently sustainably feeding over 1,600 students per day in Tanzania and the Philippines, without any donations. Founded at the forefront of the American craft chocolate revolution and regarded by many as a vanguard in the industry, Askinosie Chocolate sets the standard: they are one of the few chocolate makers in the world who press their own cocoa butter (to make their chocolate truly single origin) and the only American craft chocolate maker to produce a natural cocoa powder; they were the first American craft chocolate makers to create white chocolate, as well as a chocolate hazelnut spread (says The New York Times: “one spoonful of Askinosie’s Chocolate Hazelnut Spread and all memory of Nutella is gone”). Shawn was named by O, The Oprah Magazine "One of 15 Guys Who Are Saving the World." They said, "Why we're fans: The philanthropically-minded chocolate entrepreneur aims to get students thinking about business ethics in a way that could have ripple effects for generations." For his efforts in "Advancing food standards... by creating social, economic, and environmental impact", Shawn was awarded Top Business Leader of the Year in 2013 by the Specialty Food Association. Shawn has been awarded honorary doctorates from University of Missouri-Columbia and Missouri State University. In 2015, Askinosie Chocolate was awarded a complimentary membership to the Clinton Global Initiative for the company’s social efforts around the world. Seth Godin, entrepreneur and author, recently praised the company's model: "[Shawn] has built a practice of creating a worthwhile luxury good that directly benefits people. Not sort of. Not a little. But directly.” Askinosie Chocolate has received 3 Good Food Awards, considered to be the Oscars of food; 6 silver awards from the Specialty Food Association; and 7 International Chocolate Awards, including the Gold World Award for the Dark Chocolate + Licorice bar. The small team at Askinosie works directly with all of their retailers and sells their chocolate into specialty food stores, luxury boutiques, and high-end grocery chains throughout the US in nearly all fifty states and across the globe. Shawn's book, recently released, co-written with his daughter Lawren, published by Penguin titled "Meaningful Work: The Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul" is an Amazon #1 New Release. Read Seth Godin's review of the book here. He is a Family Brother at Assumption Abbey, a Trappist monastery near Ava, Missouri and the co-founder of Lost & Found, a grief center serving children and families in Southwest Missouri.
