Southwest Missouri's largest employer is pushing state lawmakers for passage of bipartisan child care tax credit legislation. CoxHealth testifies that it is experiencing workforce shortages due to the childcare crisis, adding that their patients can suffer. Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Kara Corches says the bill is also the Chamber's top priority. Corches tells 939 the Eagle that 80 percent of business leaders in Missouri have struggled to recruit and retain workers due to child care issues. The Missouri House has given final approval to the legislation from State Rep. Brenda Shields (R-St. Joseph) on s 120-34 vote. Ms. Corches says the bill will increase access to safe, affordable and high-quality child care. "Missouri Times" publisher Scott Faughn joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Missouri" to discuss the bill. He says State Sen. Nick Schroer (R-O'Fallon) will play a key role in it. The sheriff in Missouri's fourth-largest county says people who are in the United States Illegally and who are committing crimes need to be deported. Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Missouri". He and other sheriffs across the nation met with Border Czar Tom Homan this week. Sheriff Arnott tells listeners that Mr. Homan knows his stuff and that things are moving quickly. Southwest Missouri's Greene County has about 275,000 residents, and their jail averages about 950 inmates a day. Sheriff Arnott tells listeners there have been illegal immigrants in his jail. He says he works with ICE. Mr. Arnott was elected Greene County sheriff in 2008 and has been re-elected four times. He is now serving his fifth term as sheriff:

Near death experiences can be both daunting and intriguing. As believers, we can take comfort in these testimonies knowing that there truly is eternal life with our Creator at the end of our life on earth. Who can forget that precious little boy Colton Burpo, who recounted his story of going to heaven and coming back on every news outlet and even published a book and produced a movie about his astonishing journey. There are so many stories just like his! One such story is the story of our guest Calvin Cassady. Calvin is a leader in his Native American community and retired school teacher from Southwest Missouri. Calvin calls his testimony "a roundtrip to heaven and back": when he was 19 years old, he and some college friends were in an explosive car accident in the Ozarks. Miraculously, a few strangers managed to pull all three people from the car and call 911, and they disappeared before the ambulance came. Calvin was so critically injured he began to transition from life to death. He describes this journey to heaven as coming into a tangible awareness of sin, repentance and the devil, because in his transit to heaven both sin and the devil were left behind. Hallelujah! On Calvin's way back to earth as he was revived, he felt the weight of sin and the brokenness of this earth return back to his consciousness. Calvin asserts that when we lose people on this earth, we should rejoice for the person who has passed. For those of us who have not had a near death experience we cannot know the magnitude of the joy of heaven, but we can listen to the stories of those who have and look forward to that indescribable joy that we, too, will experience one glorious day. One of the things he used to like doing in those mountains was hunting deer. The last time he did any hunting in the Ozarks, however, was in the late 1990's. You see, one day, in November, he went hunting on his parent's farm and had an experience that caused him to swear off ever heading into the woods, in the Ozarks, by himself, ever again. He'll be the first to tell you that the Sasquatch he encountered that day never displayed any aggressive behavior toward him, but now that he knows they're actually out there, those mountains will never be the same for him. As introduced, the bill has 14 other House Democrats signed on as sponsors.the bill's legislative declaration reads, “Assault weapons and high-capacity magazines are disproportionately used in public mass shootings, and the reasons are both obvious and irrefutable. Assault weapons are uniquely lethal by design. They entail tactical features designed for warfare, refined to maximize killing large numbers of people quickly and efficiently,” The bill would prohibit the manufacture, sale, import, transfer and purchase of many semi-automatic weapons. It would define “assault weapon” as a semi-automatic rifle that can accept a detachable magazine and has at least one of the following characteristics: a pistol grip, a folding or detachable stock to help conceal the weapon, a muzzle brake, a grenade launcher, a shroud on the barrel that lets the user hold it with their non-trigger hand and not get burned, or a threaded barrel. Suicide was most common in Appalachian counties, with 15 of Ohio's 22 counties with the highest suicide rates located in Appalachia.But Suicide is on the rise for nearly everyone.Since 2007, suicide rates have increased for men and women, white, Black, and Hispanic Ohioans, and Ohioans in every age group. The only major demographic group that has seen a flat suicide trend are Asian and Pacific Islander Ohioans.Risk factors for high school students are also becoming more common.Compared to 2019, female Ohio high school students were more likely in 2021 to feel sad or hopeless, seriously consider suicide, make a plan to commit suicide, or attempt suicide. There are 17 proposed ballot items in Missouri that would legalize abortion. They're a response to the fall of Roe v. Wade, which led to the ban of most abortions. Dr. Colleen McNicholas of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri contends that only one of the 17 initiatives would push abortion access “beyond Roe.” McNicholas discusses how she believes abortion-rights activists should approach the initiative petition process.

This week we welcome Route 3 and Brady Seals! From Southern Missouri, award winning Bluegrass Band ROUTE 3 is comprised of veteran musicians that have performed at venues all over the mid-west as well as nation wide. With a traditional sound, many originals, and great instrumentation, they bring a hard driving bluegrass sound. Route 3 are recipients of the 2020 Arkansas Country Music Awards, Bluegrass Artist of the Year Award. Members of the group include: Jason Jordan: When nine-year-old Jason Jordan met Bill Monroe, he got to play his mandolin, and his love for bluegrass music began. Shortly after that, Jason began playing mandolin in his first band, an all-youth band called The Parking Lot Pickers. Jason subsequently was a founding member of Just In Tyme. He started writing and arranging his own songs. Shortly after he received an invitation to join Brightwater Junction as their guitar player. Jason co-wrote the song Captain that was recorded and made popular by Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and also wrote seven of the songs on the Route 3 debut album. Doug Clifton: At the age of 12, Doug Clifton began playing bass at his home Church, Macedonia Freewill Baptist in the Southwest Missouri town of Purdy. Soon after, he and best friend Brandon Rickman, along with Brandon's brother Heath and dad, Gary, formed The Rickmans. In 2000, Doug was a part of New Reflections, winners of the S.P.B.G.M.A International Band contest in Nashville, Tennessee that year. Doug has played with multiple bands over the years including The Messengers, Breakaway, The Signature Quartet, The Kellys, The Drifters, Roaring River Sound and New Road. Gaylon Harper: In 1986, Gaylon started learning banjo at home and attending weekend festivals with friends. It wasn't long before he was playing with a local traditional bluegrass band, Jim Orchard and The Bressler Brothers. While traveling the bluegrass circuit with them, Gaylon met the Bob Lewis Family. Shortly after, he was given the opportunity to join their band. In 1994, Gaylon and wife, Katrina, started a group with his two brothers to form The Harpers. 2009 begin the biggest adventure with the Lord so far, when Gaylon and his family begin a full-time music ministry as The Harper Family. In 2010, The Harper Family won the S.P.B.G.M.A International Band competition. A highlight is when Crossroads Recording signed them to their Pisgah Ridge label in 2013. Gaylon came off the road and became music minister at First Baptist of Birch Tree, MO. Roy Bond: Roy attended his first bluegrass show at the age of 12 and was instantly hooked. He soon began learning to play guitar and study music. Roy has been performing on stage since he was 13. He became a member of the Current River Opry show for the last two years of its 45 year run at the age of 14. After that, Roy became a member of Jim Orchard & The Ozark Bluegrass Boys where he stayed for 13 years. He has also done a considerable amount of fill in and part time work with many Ozark based bands including The Bressler Brothers, The Baker Family, Kirby Clark, and many more. Singer-songwriter and artist Brady Seals has a pedigree for success. He is related to numerous music industry heavyweights including, Jimmy Seals (Seals & Crofts), Dan Seals (England Dan & John Ford Coley), and country songwriters Troy Seals (Songwriting Hall of Fame Member) and Chuck Seals. Throughout his career, Brady Seals has sold over 11 million albums, topped three genres simultaneously, and his songs continue to captivate audiences and attract licenses for TV, radio, and film. A touring musician since the age of 16, Brady Seals is probably best known for his tenure in Little Texas. During his six years as keyboardist and co-lead singer for the multi- platinum group, they were voted ACM's Vocal Group of the Year Award and received two Grammy nominations. Little Texas celebrated three consecutive number one hits with What Might Have Been, God Blessed Texas, and My Love, all of which Seals co-wrote, granting him the ASCAP Triple Play Award. In 1996 Seals pursued a solo career, collaborating with the legendary Rodney Crowell to co-produce his Warner Brothers album, The Truth. It features a duet with Wynonna Judd, Another You, Another Me that sold over 100,000 singles. In 2002 Seals formed Hot Apple Pie (DreamWorks). Comprised of extraordinary musicians, the music industry dubbed the band “Music City's Super Group." Seals spent the next two years with Hot Apple Pie playing large venues in North America and Canada. Fans clamored for tickets to see and hear their live show as word spread about the amazing musicianship and Seals' “Jagger-esque” stage appeal gaineing the respect of music industry insiders and established acts due to their tight harmonies, agile playing skills, and charismatic stage antics. In 2008 Seals released an independent solo CD called “Play Time” featuring friends, Richard Marx and Stan Lynch (Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers) and hit the road again. He spent two years performing in clubs, theaters, and other venues across the country. When 2015 rolled around Seals along with his friend and co-writer, Gordon Kennedy founded the songwriter show called Music City Pickers LIVE! featuring artists such as Ricky Skaggs, Larry Stewart (Restless Heart), Richie McDonald (Lonestar), Peter Frampton, and many other hit-makers. In 2016 Brady paired up with Lua Crofts to form Seals & Crofts 2. 2016 also brought on another musical project for Seals. He was also asked to front a Tom Petty tribute band called The Petty Junkies. The group is comprised of the who's who of Nashville professional studio musicians and artists who have been very successful in their own right. In 2022 Seals signed with SM1 Music Group/Universal Music to release a brand-new musical project that he's been working on for years. Brady's first single from the project, "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight", has streamed over 1.5 million times on Spotify. On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Luther Roweton, a fellow Missourian that Dan met while competing for a public land dove hunting spot. Luther was raised in Southwest Missouri. He found that the outdoor lifestyle provided a means to escape and center himself at a young age. Luther grew up in agriculture, helping with a large cattle operation on a midsize farm which provided ample opportunity to experience hunting and learn the craft of woodsman-ship. Without and family members that really hunted, Luther started failing early and often but fell in love with the process of learning. His senior year of high school Luther opted out of a starting spot on the basketball team because he couldn't miss another opportunity at chasing whitetail during the rut. Now, married with children Luther's focus has shifted. Luther is married to a supportive wife and fellow hunter Angelique whom he helped get a first archery deer kill this season. Luther spends most of the archery season chasing mature bucks on his own and emphasizes family time during Missouri's firearm season. Dan and Luther talk about their similar early season hunts where they both took great deer with their bows while hunting from a saddle setup.
