In this episode, we embark upon a swashbuckling anthropological journey into one of the most mysterious aesthetics of the menswear universe: Male Pirate Dressing, a style beloved by prestige actors and aging rockstars alike. Along with our two expert witnesses, James Harris and Lawrence Schlossman of the Throwing Fits Podcast, we ask some of life's most difficult questions: Why is midlife crisis boho such a prevalent phenomenon? Are indie sleaze icons destined (or doomed) to succumb to over-accesorized fashion piracy in the years to come? Do men know about John Galliano? Tune in to find out!Links:Image Board Alexander McQueen Spring 2003 Ready-to-WearHeidi Slimane Wearable Pirate UniformThe Trouble with Johnny Depp – Rolling StoneWere Pirates Foes of the Modern Order, or Its Secret Sharers? – The New YorkerThrowing Fits on SubstackThrowing Fits on Instagram
James Harris and Lawrence Schlossman, hosts of the podcast Throwing Fits, are influential figures in menswear with decades of fashion and media experience. Hailing from New Jersey and Manhattan, respectively, Schlossman and Harris lend their understanding of men's fashion to those in the know, with their podcast featuring guests discussing current fashion trends and personal style. As makers, they've begun designing sought-after garments like mesh shorts and cut-and-sew overshirts. Well-known for their chemistry, they describe themselves as yin and yang, with Harris joking and Schlossman sharing insights. Their personal styles reflect their expertise and passions—a sexy Scandinavian look for Harris and a unique take on heritage brands for Schlossman. They both value quality and investing in well-made items, and prioritize organic experiences, exploration, curiosity, and discoverability. Episode Highlights: Schlossman and Harris's origin story of work and personal partnership was born of necessity and involved building a social calendar around whatever was available to them. They worked together at Complex, “failing upwards,” with a fashion video show that took off based on their dynamic before moving on to more strategic and brand partnerships roles. As they moved up the ladder, both felt creatively constricted by red tape and constrained by creating content that catered to advertising dollars. Schlossman and Harris started their podcast in January 2020 with a sense of having zero stakes—and they say this mentality is what paid off. Retaining their independence is important to them in a clinical media landscape; it keeps their listeners interested in their irreverence voice. Now that they make their own designs and collaborate with their favorite brands, such as Our Legacy, Schlossman and Harris contrast their well-made designs with “guys who get dressed for the internet.” Their audience is “incredibly enthusiastic and incredibly savvy and smart,” Harris says, and respects their underdog style and pursuits. They cite a robust list of favorite brands, like Eckhaus Latta, Connor McKnight, Angelo Urrutia, Stoffa, Sunflower, and Our Legacy as references and masterful brands of the moment. When asked what's contemporary now, Harris offers “the fragmentation” and “the challenge of how people can eventually find their people,” while Schlossman says “motivation and doing things because they actually make you feel good,” which is inherent to his interest in dressing. This week, parasocial relationships just become relationships as we welcome Lawrence aka ‘Larry' Schlossman onto the pod. If you know, you know...and "The only podcast that matters™" is Throwing Fits.Lawrence Schlossman and James Harris's podcast is often the highlight of my week, and I'm privileged to be buddies with them. It's been surreal to watch their show go from essentially a google hangouts chatbox with themselves to the juggernaut podcast and brand that is Throwing Fits.Larry has been on the pod a few times, so if you want to know his backstory, dig through that archive, but if you want the hot goss now? The answers to your questions? The AMA of all AMA's is here. It's Throwing Fits and the B!, together, answering your questions.
You read that title right. It's here. It's really here. Strap in for what is undoubtedly the most insane episode of Pair of Kings Podcast yet, as we're joined by James Harris (@doctortaco) and Lawrence Schlossman (@sartoriallyinc), the hosts of the OG men's fashion pod, Throwing Fits (@throwingfits). Listen in as John and Sol are thrown straight into the flames as we are roasted, toasted, and given sage advice about every aspect of our lives. Thank you Larry and James for taking the time to join us (and to say that we're cool), and thank you to everyone for listening!
Lawrence Schlossman is the brand director at Grailed, and cohost of the podcast Throwing Fits. Chris and Jason basically spend an hour making fun of him, and being made fun of, by him. We love to roast each other to no end, and Lawrence sometimes talks so quickly that our FaceTime connection can’t keep up. Harlem’s Kush God started his music career as a battle rapper before signing to a label and going on to collaborate with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, and Snoop Dogg. Recently, Smoke DZA returned with his latest album A Closed Mouth Don’t Get Fed, and he talks about the new music video for “Praying For My Soul,” a single off the album featuring Flipp Dinero, on this week’s episode of ‘The Dropcast.’ Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas talk cozy work-from-home fits courtesy of Needles’ new SS20 drop (4:12). Now that he’s in the know about the new drop, Smoke’s planning to let loose during the quarantine. The same goes for Saucony’s Grid Azura 2000, recently reworked by Bodega. Smoke is a fan of New Balance, expressing that Nike and Adidas are like the McDonald’s and Burger King of sneakers (7:00). Supreme proves its presence once again as the streetwear giant, this time quite literally, in their recent full-page New York Times ad showing friends and family chilling at home in front of a massive box logo T-shirt (8:47). This definitely caught the attention of Smoke who’s been waiting on Supreme to release products larger than their current offerings. Although Smoke isn’t big on Jordans, he digs the alternative Off-White Air Jordan 5 colorway and sees their value as someone who flips sneakers once in a blue moon when the opportunity falls into his lap — as he did with the Off-White Air Force 1s (11:54). If Smoke were to collab with Nike, you’d catch him cooking up fresh colorways for Air Max 97s or Vandals (14:10). Jian recently spoke with James Harris and Lawrence Schlossman of the ‘Throwing Fits’ podcast on the growing possibility of a post-sneaker world in the wake of Covid-19 (15:25). Smoke doesn’t see the trend dying out. While the world was figuratively ending, Smoke was busy shooting the video for “Praying For My Soul,” which will be released next Monday (20:06). Smoke can already be seen donning a mask, which speaks to his hope for the video to be a time capsule reminding future listeners of the Covid-19 crisis. This episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked Dropcast listeners the best quarantine pastime, with callers to the hotline sharing examples of charitable acts and getting the cast to talk the Kush God’s specialty (22:02). Smoke’s staying on top of the indoors lifestyle, having recently copped a new wireless router for gaming in “What’d You Cop?” (27:52). As usual, be on the lookout for the next Dropcast QOTW which will be posted on Highsnobiety’s Instagram, and make sure to leave a voicemail on the hotline at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766) for a chance to be featured in a future episode. Live from NYC: it me, complete fanboy for this episode. I'm extremely honored to welcome Jeremy Kirkland and Lawrence Schlossman to the Petty Pod. Jeremy and Lawrence have been unique voices in the menswear fashion world starting back in 2009 with their own niche blogs and tumblr mood boards. Jeremy used to side-hustle articles about Rolex and Seiko watches for Esquire, and today he hosts Blamo!, a podcast interviewing fashion designers like Todd Snyder, Paul Feig, and Billy Reid. After Lawrence published his crispy gentleman bible, Fuck Yeah Menswear, he started Four Pins, the seminal fashion and culture editorial for Complex Magazine which cultivated a huge community of "jawnz enthusiasts" that still thrive on a subreddit near you. Now Lawrence co-hosts Failing Upwards, where he turns the sartorial into satirical with folks like Jonah Hill, Brandon Wardell, and Ryan Serhant. We talked about mall punk, writing, trends, Run Of The Mill (Jer and Ler's joint clothing venture), and why eBay and Supreme are still the greatest things ever. Fasten your studded leather belts and Rancid t-shirts, and let's go! Check out the video highlights here: https://youtu.be/iysIdC6gVLg

Men’s fashion has seen a steep rise in popularity in recent years. This week Chris and James talk to Grailed brand director Lawrence Schlossman about the speed of trends and the role he plays in the culture. He gives James some feedback on his look, explains Rick Owens and the meteoric rise of Vetements. Lawrence’s ability to keep it real no matter who is listening (or reading) has helped him gain a significant following online. He is unabashedly himself at all times, an attractive quality in today’s always offended society.
