In 2004 as “Lean Back” hit the charts and he famously licked the bottom of his Olympic Air Jordan 7 on an episode of MTV Cribs, Fat Joe forever cemented his impression in hip hop and sneaker culture iconography. Since then he's had a slew of hit records, nominated for and won many awards, advocated Washington DC for patient transparency in health care, hosted awards shows, written a best selling book, performed all over the world, hosts his own talk show, given back to his community thousands of times over and most importantly remains a friend to all who have ever touched his life. Sometimes you're just born with it. At least that's how it feels with the current G.O.A.T. of BMX lifestyle, Nigel Sylvester. Nigel was just a toddler on his little red tricycle when he was drifting around cones set up as race course by his cousin on his driveway. Admiring and modeling the great Dave Mirra growing up, Sylvester went pro at age 18 and was recruited by Mirra to rep his team. Flashforward 18 years later and Sylvester is still going strong but has expanded his brand into events, fashion, art, books and more. Nigel Sylvester is the new BXM icon for young up-in-comers to model. He's a great example of someone in constant pursuit of dreams, riding all around the world, while also keeping it real with his roots deeply planted in Queens NY. Support the show

On this episode of The Paul Rivera Podcast, PR sits down with professional BMX athlete Nigel Sylvester to talk about how he rode his bike from Queens NY to stardom. They discuss how created his own lane within sport and culture, turning pro, and the global success of his ‘GO' content series.
One of the most anticipated chats of HYPEFEST, jeffstaple sat down with a host of the industry’s most in-demand creatives to break down the science of collaborations. Matthew M. Williams of ALYX, Errolson Hugh from ACRONYM, Hiroshi Fujiwara of fragment design, John Elliott and Nigel Sylvester all took part in the sprawling, hour-long discourse. Topics ranged from Elliott underlining the storytelling aspect of collaboration, while Fujiwara discussed the birth of his HTM line with Nike. In fact, all of the participants have collaborated with Nike, resulting in a series of references to their individual time spent with the Swoosh. Later, Hugh broke down what makes a good collaboration, describing it as “Two people, who are good at doing what they do, [make] some new thing that they couldn’t do without each other.” By the end, the panelists agree that there are too many collaborations in the industry, perhaps even too much product. “I think it’s our job to create product that really means something,” said Williams. “It kinda should deserve to be in existence and collaborations should check that same box.” As always, thank you for tuning into HYPEBEAST Radio and The HYPETALKS Podcast. This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal we welcome NBA/sneaker/hip-hop writer, editor, commentator and confidant Russ Bengtson to the Upper West Side! Russ talks growing up in Long Island, his early interest in journalism, being a Chicago Bulls fan in New York, attending the University of Delaware, his classmate and fellow journalist Jeff Pearlman, and his first job out of college working for a tiny newspaper in rural Pennsylvania where he was hands-on in every aspect of the publication. We discuss how SLAM Magazine reached out to him, what exactly "Senior Editor" meant, his early dealings with Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippin and Charles Barkley, JR Rider being cut from the Hawks before an interview, Kobe Bryant's respecting SLAM over other publications, Allen Iverson's magnetism, Stephon Marbury's unbelievable heart and talent, connecting Kevin Garnett and Jonathan Mannion for a legendary photo shoot, and the good and bad realities of choosing a magazine cover months ahead of time. Russ gets into his time as Editor in Chief of SLAM, his great partner in crime Lang Whitaker, in what ways Shaq and Nigel Sylvester are similar, Patrick Ewing not acknowledging him for two years, SLAM's reputation according to beat writers as opposed to enthusiasts, and why his time at the publication came to an end. We cover his freelance days, his introduction to Complex, the early days of Twitter, how page views and traffic changed the way writing worked, where Quickstrike - his sneaker show with Clark Kent - succeeded and where it missed opportunities, and his new documentary with Complex, Sole Origins. All that, plus stories about Pig Miller, Rasheed Wallace, Mobb Deep, Gregg Popovich, getting robbed on his apartment's front steps, University of Delaware's short time in the NCAA tourney, his Twitter block list, his love of heavy metal and much more!
