My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Joseph Rein, author of the book Youtopia. Joseph is the author of the Youtopia series (Youtopia, Youtopia Reborn, Youtopia Infinity). His short story collection Roads without Houses was nominated for numerous literary prizes. His short fiction has appeared in over twenty journals, magazines, and anthologies worldwide, and has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. He is also a screenwriter and critical essayist. His second feature-length film, Who Killed Cooper Dunn? (2022), was featured on Showtime and other streaming platforms. He wrote, produced, and acted in multiple other short festival films. He is currently a Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. When not writing or reading, he can be found hiking with his wife Jessica, playing cribbage, or recovering from various small injuries inflicted by his four children. In my book review, I stated Youtopia is a techno-thriller that still has me thinking. Anabel Downer is an FBI agent assigned to find a murderer. However, this isn't an ordinary murder but one that happened in cyberspace. Youtopia is a place where one can live in a perfect world of their own choosing - every single day - in a virtual reality environment. People tired of life with all its up and downs and disappointments can choose to immerse themselves into Youtopia, living out the rest of their days without pain, discomfort, or disease. As you can imagine, some people love the idea and others abhor it. But who hates it enough to murder? This book is fast-paced and has plenty of twists and turns, especially as we see Anabel's past and her connection to Youtopia. Mostly, it will make you think. In the wee hours of Saturday morning, this set brought us all back to life.It's Butterfly Catcher.NEIL BLACK aka BUTTERFLY CATCHER IS A POSITIVE FORCE in the Southern California Electronic Music Scene. Heavily influenced by House & Breaks in the late-90's West Coast rave culture, Neil started to build a sound system that would specialize in these frequencies. Fast forward a decade, and Bomb Shelta Sound was organically building a name by sonically fortifying many legendary events in the San Diego area.As the outdoor/campout event scene began to develop in the 2010s, Neil cofounded the production company Monarch Metamorphosis that would build custom staging, artistic props and provide cool lighting & effects. This lead to an opportunity to build a sound camp at San Diego's regional Burning Man decompression festival Youtopia. This was a huge creative space, and as the festival grew, Monarch tripled in size and became the main sound camp, with some legendary themes from 2016-2018. Back in San Diego, Monarch was also producing a series of events OHM Oscillating Head Music in their home town of Ocean Beach. Monarch collabed with In Da Hoody to produce the Prizm series of one room/ multi-genre live art events, and partnered up with Broken Beat on the It's A Vibe Bass music events. Monarch went on to procuce their own Spring campout event series Bug Out, with 4 annual events to date.Throughout these events, Neil's Butterfly Catcher DJ project began to take shape. Focusing on the gentler, headier, melodic side of electronic music, Butterfly Catcher lifts up a dancefloor in the early hours, to help set the vibe off right, so it can spread its wings on a positive note. They help them talk through the fear of what is scaring them to move to that next level. What's good all you Ash Holes! On today's episode we start the talk off with a little about conceal carry in Texas and a splash of nutting on walls. The guys main topic and what they will mainly be talking about will be about a short film on youtube which you can watch before you listen to our show or after it is titled "a man lives in a society where citizens police each other with their mobile phones" and the short film is by the youtube channel OMELETO. It's a pretty interesting short video and looks like that could be reality here in a couple years. Also Daniel slaps the listeners with some interesting Chuck Norris facts and Ruben gives us another famous quote by the greatest president that has ever lived.
