My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Joseph Rein, author of the book Youtopia. Joseph is the author of the Youtopia series (Youtopia, Youtopia Reborn, Youtopia Infinity). His short story collection Roads without Houses was nominated for numerous literary prizes. His short fiction has appeared in over twenty journals, magazines, and anthologies worldwide, and has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. He is also a screenwriter and critical essayist. His second feature-length film, Who Killed Cooper Dunn? (2022), was featured on Showtime and other streaming platforms. He wrote, produced, and acted in multiple other short festival films. He is currently a Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. When not writing or reading, he can be found hiking with his wife Jessica, playing cribbage, or recovering from various small injuries inflicted by his four children. In my book review, I stated Youtopia is a techno-thriller that still has me thinking. Anabel Downer is an FBI agent assigned to find a murderer. However, this isn't an ordinary murder but one that happened in cyberspace. Youtopia is a place where one can live in a perfect world of their own choosing - every single day - in a virtual reality environment. People tired of life with all its up and downs and disappointments can choose to immerse themselves into Youtopia, living out the rest of their days without pain, discomfort, or disease. As you can imagine, some people love the idea and others abhor it. But who hates it enough to murder? This book is fast-paced and has plenty of twists and turns, especially as we see Anabel's past and her connection to Youtopia. Mostly, it will make you think. What would you give up to have a perfect life? And is perfect really what you want after all? Welcome to Leyenda Radio where we bring you exclusive sets and recordings from the artists that played this year's Leyenda Del Corazon festival in Baja, MX. Our fourth episode is a study in ethereal, dynamic, and narrative sets. In the wee hours of Saturday morning, this set brought us all back to life. It's Butterfly Catcher.NEIL BLACK aka BUTTERFLY CATCHER IS A POSITIVE FORCE in the Southern California Electronic Music Scene. Heavily influenced by House & Breaks in the late-90's West Coast rave culture, Neil started to build a sound system that would specialize in these frequencies. Fast forward a decade, and Bomb Shelta Sound was organically building a name by sonically fortifying many legendary events in the San Diego area.As the outdoor/campout event scene began to develop in the 2010s, Neil cofounded the production company Monarch Metamorphosis that would build custom staging, artistic props and provide cool lighting & effects. This lead to an opportunity to build a sound camp at San Diego's regional Burning Man decompression festival Youtopia. This was a huge creative space, and as the festival grew, Monarch tripled in size and became the main sound camp, with some legendary themes from 2016-2018. Back in San Diego, Monarch was also producing a series of events OHM Oscillating Head Music in their home town of Ocean Beach. Monarch collabed with In Da Hoody to produce the Prizm series of one room/ multi-genre live art events, and partnered up with Broken Beat on the It's A Vibe Bass music events. Monarch went on to procuce their own Spring campout event series Bug Out, with 4 annual events to date.Throughout these events, Neil's Butterfly Catcher DJ project began to take shape. Focusing on the gentler, headier, melodic side of electronic music, Butterfly Catcher lifts up a dancefloor in the early hours, to help set the vibe off right, so it can spread its wings on a positive note. Butterfly Catcher is bringing some sonic soul to the So Cal scene, and putting smiles on the faces of a dancefloor near you. Support the Show.

** Replay of Episode 11 with David Mammano, December 27, 2022** One of the things that scares people from being entrepreneurs is the uncertainty of what can happen. But it's all part of the fun! The ability to fail and fail forward is what sets successful people apart. In today's episode, Adam Hill speaks with David Mammano about overcoming fear and failure as an entrepreneur. David is an entrepreneur and a teacher of entrepreneurs. He's a writer about entrepreneurs and a speaker about entrepreneurs. It's obvious he loves the entrepreneurial life. David is the founder of seven businesses, a three-time Inc Magazine 5000 growth company winner, a two-time TEDx speaker, and an adjunct professor at the University of Rochester in New York. He now leads the YOUtopia, a network that helps entrepreneurs to grow and connect. He's also the host of the highly acclaimed podcast, “The Gonzo Experience”, and author of three books, including his most recent bestseller CRASH and LEARN: Lessons in Business. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: David's career background from a radio job to a magazine business Failure is giving up Seeing the light at the end of the COVID tunnel Getting out of the fear What prompted him to write a book David's version of “crash and learn” Getting good at mitigating risks as an entrepreneur Finding the balance between a setback and a failure Episode Highlights: [08:29] Failure is Giving Up As an entrepreneur, it's important to have a growth mindset, seeing failure as giving up. If your business doesn't go well the first time, then start creating a second business. If it fails again, then do a third business – until you get it. Failure is when you decide to give up and stop being an entrepreneur, and you stop doing what you're doing. Having this kind of mindset develops persistence. [19:33] Getting Out of The Fear A lot of people let fear be an obstacle to achieving their best. One of the ways we can get out of that fear is to find a community of like-minded people that are going through the same thing and inspire each other to push through perceived obstacles. Mastermind groups like YOUtopia bring in speakers who are going to inspire people to realize that these barriers are not real and that fear is not real. They help them talk through the fear of what is scaring them to move to that next level. [30:15] Finding the Balance Between Setbacks and Failures Have a tribe of trusted kindred spirits that have your best interests in mind and with whom you can talk things through, get feedback, and get their thoughts. Let them share their experiences that you can also take into account before jumping into decisions. A lot of entrepreneurs have so much energy and they move fast. But that can turn into a double-edged sword when you're moving too fast, that you're spending the wrong energy on something and you lose interest. You can be more successful when you surround yourself with people that can help you see the full spectrum of what's going on or what could go on. What's good all you Ash Holes! On today's episode we start the talk off with a little about conceal carry in Texas and a splash of nutting on walls. Camber and Arash talk consent culture, gay polyamory and how nice people in Portland are. There is also a beautiful moment of shared tears followed promptly by Arash whining about his ex again.
Mikey and Arash move through some of the backstory of San Diego's techno scene, the rise of Desert Hearts and Wu Tang Clan. Yeah that last bit was a surprise to us too.
Sean Natural Nash sits with Arash to talk San Diego's burner home, colab, as well as some Rangering stories and his adventures with Rainbow Family. Arash also attempts to get some dating advice from Natural, who is a married man.
Lisa Dewey fights for the title of “most woo woo guest” as she talks to Arash about the spiritual side of health, her experiences as a death doula and the status of women, both in and out of the Burner community. Also, Arash attempts not to be all whiny about his ex-girlfriend.
Arash and Hill talk about her painting, the spiritual side of artistry and all kinds of other artsy fartsy stuff. And if that's not enough to make you gag, Arash gets all super woo woo about all the magical crap that happened surrounding the recording of this episode.
Arash leads a roundtable discussion with five candidates running for open seats on the San Diego Collaborative Arts Project's board of directors. Chaos ensues.
Arash gives Marc a lot of jealous side-eye because of his awesome radio voice while they chat about fire-spinning safety, sky-diving into Black Rock City and that feeling of invincibility you get after your first burn.
