In this week's episode, we take a deep dive into Grisch, the fascinating niche style gaining traction among Sweden's affluent youth. Drawing on our listeners' firsthand accounts and a century of Scandinavian cultural history, we dissect its surprisingly long lineage— from fin-de-siècle dandies and Eurotrash dudebros to gangster rappers and old money influencers—all culminating in a high-stakes world of designer denim, puffer vests, and luxury low-profile sneakers. We ponder how the complex relationship between class, age, nationalism, and masculinity embodied by Grisch might result in its global domination. There's a fashion technique that's been in continuous use for over five thousand years – proof, if proof is needed, that there is nothing new in fashion. We have tunics that survive from the time of the Pharaohs in Egypt that use it and you can see it still in the catwalk collections of today.     It's incredible to think that the simple pleat has pleased the human eye for so long and in so many different ways. Pleating adds movement and life to garments and often signals wealth and abundance. Each culture has found its own way to use them, from the stitched smocks of early English farm workers to the glorious billowing dress Marilyn Munroe wore above the subway grating in the 1950s.   This episode tells the story of the pleats on the world's oldest surviving garment, hears from an expert modern pleater in New York, and tries to unravel the mystery behind one of the world's most famous pleated garments.   For more information about this episode and pictures of the people and places mentioned in this episode please go to https://hapticandhue.com/tales-of-textiles-series-7/. And if you would like to find out about Friends of Haptic & Hue with an extra podcast every month hosted by Jo Andrews and Bill Taylor – here's the link: https://hapticandhue.com/join/

We analyze the socioeconomic conditions that led to this period of loser glorification, identify key players (Todd Solondz, Paul Dano), cinematic touchstones (Napoleon Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine), and generational anthems ("Teenage Dirtbag," "Buddy Holly"), and reflect on how the Internet has transformed today's young losers into threats to themselves and others. Born in 1890 to an aristocratic family in Rome, Elsa's life was anything but conventional. As a child, she released a box of fleas under her parents' dinner table and later staged a hunger strike to escape a Swiss convent. After a whirlwind marriage to a charming con man, she found herself as a single mother in New York, scraping by while mingling with avant-garde artists like Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. It wasn't until she moved to Paris and met legendary designer Paul Poiret that she discovered her true calling: inventing fashion. From surrealist collaborations with Salvador Dalí to creating her signature shocking pink, Schiaparelli defied norms, blending wit, art, and bold femininity. She gave us iconic designs like the lobster dress, the shoe hat, and the first wrap dress. A pioneer who refused to play by the rules, Elsa didn't just make clothes—she made statements.Follow Darrian@iamdarrian ____View all the visually rich 1-min reels of each woman on IG below:Instagram: Amber AsayInstagram: Women Designers Pod
