But not now! EXT. TOM'S RESTAURANT. MANHATTAN. DAY. It is a grey but not dreary day, overcast however with the silverline clouds of an otherwise beautiful sunlit day. [—The Legend Returns] Tales of a Superstwr DJ It's shining like three seeds of pomegranate in my hand— A desolate desert beach amidst a sandstorm, the sun beams down through the barrage of inescapable flying white pellets of sand. FUCK! Dapper gentlemen, All I want to see if your body Make sand stone ground, Clasp to nothing but perhaps, Warm and clean, crisp and fresh linen And I, you, my need Free to your whole body, A feast for the starving; A quest for the wicked. Yes, I need you. Now and forever. I need you. Now and forever. If we made love in the library, Any open book would be of you thereafter— And to give me a guitar would mean, That every note would sing your name. Just then, the Peloton beckoned, or the cleats, anyway, although the bath I'd run just the night before was still full, stone cold by now and just as well the coffee in my tumbler was luke warm, but I had cried myself an entire river the night before, and I was sure the pouting might have even sent me to a seperate dimension. I was being such a baby—and I had never been so upset to have actually gotten what I wanted. The handsome man was a distraction— a welcome one. I didn't want to ask his age, but I knew he was older than me, and he was beautiful. I didn't want to scare him away, but to be honest with myself or anything else, this was the first one I might have wanted in a long time—the first real one, anyway, or, somewhat real. Closer to normal along the spectrum, not some famous celebrity or a delusion of grandeur, but seemingly normal, smart, and handsome. Remember my imaginary friend RiffRaff? Wasn't it a dragon I think so. Huh. Turns out it's a rapper. That's… interesting. Even more odd: look at this. Don't scroll anymore. That is…fantastic. {Enter The Multiverse} It fees too close to home; I took the scenic route. Send us a textArnie and Fred begin a new episode by discussing what the Bible says about morality. We begin by looking at what Paul went through while he was in protective custody by a Roman garrison and his discussion with the Roman official in charge of the area where he was imprisoned. We find out that the Roman official was totally unprincipled and rather immoral. This was not unusual for Roman officials. We then note that in large measure, modern day America is not much different as is much of the world. We discuss the fact that morality is not of human origin. Observing human activity, one gets the idea that each individual has their own morality. We note that it is the Lord who provided the standard of morality to the Israelites. We note that this hasn't changed. We also talk about the fact that morality is not legislated by the majority, even though we see this done all the time. We continue by looking at what the Bible says about philosophies and the deep thinkers who produce these in every culture. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and will have to address this item in the next episode. Take about 30-minutes to listen to this episode. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript provided for your convenience.

James Harris and Lawrence Schlossman, hosts of the podcast Throwing Fits, are influential figures in menswear with decades of fashion and media experience. Hailing from New Jersey and Manhattan, respectively, Schlossman and Harris lend their understanding of men's fashion to those in the know, with their podcast featuring guests discussing current fashion trends and personal style. As makers, they've begun designing sought-after garments like mesh shorts and cut-and-sew overshirts. Well-known for their chemistry, they describe themselves as yin and yang, with Harris joking and Schlossman sharing insights. Their personal styles reflect their expertise and passions—a sexy Scandinavian look for Harris and a unique take on heritage brands for Schlossman. They both value quality and investing in well-made items, and prioritize organic experiences, exploration, curiosity, and discoverability. Episode Highlights: Schlossman and Harris's origin story of work and personal partnership was born of necessity and involved building a social calendar around whatever was available to them. They worked together at Complex, “failing upwards,” with a fashion video show that took off based on their dynamic before moving on to more strategic and brand partnerships roles. As they moved up the ladder, both felt creatively constricted by red tape and constrained by creating content that catered to advertising dollars.  Schlossman and Harris started their podcast in January 2020 with a sense of having zero stakes—and they say this mentality is what paid off.  Retaining their independence is important to them in a clinical media landscape; it keeps their listeners interested in their irreverence voice.   Now that they make their own designs and collaborate with their favorite brands, such as Our Legacy, Schlossman and Harris contrast their well-made designs with “guys who get dressed for the internet.”  Their audience is “incredibly enthusiastic and incredibly savvy and smart,” Harris says, and respects their underdog style and pursuits.  They cite a robust list of favorite brands, like Eckhaus Latta, Connor McKnight, Angelo Urrutia, Stoffa, Sunflower, and Our Legacy as references and masterful brands of the moment.  When asked what's contemporary now, Harris offers “the fragmentation” and “the challenge of how people can eventually find their people,” while Schlossman says “motivation and doing things because they actually make you feel good,” which is inherent to his interest in dressing.  Learn more about your ad choices. The Philistines were the nemesis of the people of Israel—a constant threat in battle after battle after battle. The overarching story of the Old Testament tells us that "the axis on which the battle against the nemesis is won or lost is the FEAR OF GOD." In this message, Benjamin Shanks explores the theme of the FEAR OF GOD and its counterpart, IRREVERENCE in the story of David vs. Goliath. This message will encourage you to hold on to the Fear of God in a culture of irreverence.

The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy

Humor in Psychotherapy Curt and Katie chat about the benefits and challenges of using humor in the therapy room. We look at the research exploring how humor is used, potential risks, and best practices. We work to infuse humor, even as we take our therapeutic humor pretty seriously. This is a continuing education podcourse. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode we talk about how therapists can best work within treatment teams Anecdotal evidence suggests that humor can have positive effects on therapeutic relationship development and as a skill that can be used for interventions. Concerns that humor may be used incorrectly or be potentially harmful make many clinicians wary of utilizing humor in therapy and empirical research is in its infancy about how it can be used effectively. This podcast episode explores the themes of therapeutic humor, which populations might present with different humor styles, and cultural considerations when using humor. What are the beneficial uses of humor in therapy? ·      Authenticity versus rigidity ·      Serious versus humorous interactions ·      Irreverence in DBT ·      Humor must come from within your own personality, it is not something that is teachable ·      Within the relationship and the therapeutic alliance, humor can increase connection ·      Using humor as a therapist can address power imbalances ·      Opportunities to challenge beliefs and shift behavior with a lighter touch ·      Diffusing situations, gallows humor, and moving on from challenging situations What are the risks of using humor in therapy? ·      When clients don't understand the humor, it can cause iatrogenic harm ·      Confusion on the intent of humor ·      Confusion regarding the connection fostered by humor (i.e., could be seen as seduction) ·      Humor can be a distraction or a way to deflect from the therapeutic work ·      Humor can be seen as reinforcing power imbalances, especially when the client sees the humor as an insult, criticism, or the therapist putting the client down ·      Clients may not be able to give feedback on their reactions to humor ·      Self-deprecating or self-pitying humor is not recommended in therapy What is in the research on using humor in therapy? ·      Not a lot of research ·      Research on humor in therapy is usually done with western therapists and clients ·      It is important to understand the different cultural impacts on humor ·      There is research on the 7 stages and themes of humor within therapy ·      Assessing the use of banter in therapy ·      Identifying whether aggressive humor can improve outcomes in therapy ·      Misapplication of humor as confrontation versus using it for facilitation How can therapists use humor effectively in therapy? ·      Assess jokes and humorous interactions from the lens of it being for the benefit of the client ·      Focus on “reading the room,” so you're not using humor inappropriately ·      Connecting and affirming your understanding of the client's experience ·      Balancing activities in session (business time versus fun time) ·      Using humor as a diagnostic tool ·      Addressing ruptures or potential ruptures caused by humor Receive Continuing Education for this Episode of the Modern Therapist's Survival Guide You can find this full course (including handouts and resources) here: https://moderntherapistcommunity.com/podcourse/ Continuing Education Approvals: Continuing Education Information including grievance and refund policies. The Coffee Klatch with Robert Reich

Friends,At President Biden's State of the Union address last week, Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene repeatedly yelled “Liar!,” Tennessee Republican Rep. Andy Ogles shouted, “It's your fault!,” and another Republican yelled “B******t!”Fourteen years ago, Republican Rep. Joe Wilson was formally rebuked by the whole House after shouting “you lie” at Obama.Yet now, anything goes.Meanwhile, Rep. George Santos remains in Congress despite mounting revelations of outright lies, fabrications, and shady deals that years ago would have sent a member of Congress packing. We've also just learned about Jared Kushner's quid pro quo with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). As Middle East adviser to his father-in-law, Kushner gave MBS everything he wanted — Trump's first trip abroad, permission to blockade Qatar, a pass on imprisoning leading Saudi citizens until they paid him billions and another on killing and dismembering journalist Jamal Khashoggi (as Trump later put it, “I saved his [MBS's] ass.”).Then, after Kushner left the White House, MBS reciprocated by putting $2 billion from the sovereign wealth fund he chaired into Kushner's private equity company.Where's the shame?Elon Musk's concern about the dwindling number of people seeing his tweets prompted the zillionaire to convene a group of engineers last Tuesday to discover why his engagement numbers were tanking. When one of the company's two remaining principal engineers explained it was likely due to waning public interest in Musk's antics, Musk fired the engineer. We used to call such behavior shameless. Now, it's just what the rich and powerful do.Shame once reenforced social norms. Through most of human history, survival depended on extended families, clans, and tribes. To be shamed and ostracized for violating the common good often meant death.Charles Darwin, in his book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, thought shame may have evolved as a way to maintain social trust necessary for the survival of a group and, therefore, of its members. In a 2012 paper, psychologists Matthew Feinberg and Dacher Keltner and sociologist Robb Willer found evidence that shame and embarrassment function as a kind of “nonverbal apology” for having done something that violates social norms. A display of embarrassment shows others that the embarrassed person is still aware of the group's expectations and is still committed to the group's well-being.Four centuries ago, public shaming included scarlet A's. “Ignominy is universally acknowledged to be a worse punishment than death,” wrote Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence who also sought to put an end to public stocks and whipping posts.A more recent version of public shaming occurred in 1954 when Joseph Welch, then chief council for the U.S. Army, stood up to Sen. Joseph McCarthy before a nationwide television audience. During a hearing in which McCarthy accused the army of harboring communists, McCarthy attacked one of Welch's young assistants for having once belonged to the National Lawyers Guild, which McCarthy considered a communist front.Welch responded: “Until this moment, Senator, I think I have never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness …. Have you no sense of decency, sir?” Millions of Americans watching the proceedings from their living rooms saw McCarthy as the dangerous bully he was. By shaming him, Welch shamed America for having tolerated McCarthy and the communist witch hunt he was leading. It was the beginning of the end of McCarthy's reign of terror. But today, shamelessness has gained a certain elan. Audacity, insolence, and impudence are welcomed. Irreverence is celebrated. We hoot when someone gives society the bird. Many Americans love Donald Trump's loutishness. Meanwhile, instead of being directed at behavior that undermines the common good, shame is now often deployed against people who don't fit in. Social media unleashes torrents of invective on people for little more than saying something silly or looking different or being socially inept. Shaming like this can cause a sensitive teenager to take his or her life. Why are those who violate social norms now treated like Wild West outlaw heroes, while those who are different are ridiculed? Why are bullies now applauded while those at the margin are ostracized? This is a public episode. Malcolm Cox

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 6, 2022 8:43

Today a response to a message from a friend based on one of my recent Teaching Tips about communion. “Thank You” Govinda for your well considered thoughts and questions. I cannot address them all in today's post, but I will pick out one point for discussion. “It's been a long time as a church … that we have got onto our knees and focused on the cross… I feel the communion sometimes does not get the reverence it deserves.” My provocative question would be, “Is communion meant to be a time of reverence?” I have been re-reading and taking notes on this excellent book, “Early Christian worship: a basic introduction to ideas and practice” by Paul Bradshaw. He summarises the shifts and developments in practice and theology over the first four centuries. To answer my own question, I'll make a few points. 1. Irreverence is a problem. Paul makes that point loud and clear, “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons.” (1 Corinthians 10:21–22) 2. Remembering Christ means remembering his cross. “And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”” (Luke 22:19 NIV11) 3. The New Testament gives us no direction about silence, mourning or reflecting on sins of the week. The warning to examine ourselves in 1 Corinthians 11:28 is something to be done before coming to the assembly, not during it. 4. The early church may have been influenced as much by the incident on the road to Emmaus as the upper room. Jesus told his followers to remember him, and the first two disciples to break bread with Jesus after his resurrection recognised (remembered) it was him “when he broke the bread” (Luke 24:35). As Bradshaw notes, ‘Sunday was not just the occasion for a commemoration of a past event – the resurrection – but the celebration of a present experience – communion with the risen Christ.' 77 5. The early church was eschatologically expectant. The Lord's Day was the eighth day – the day of the LORD, the Messianic age, the lead-up to the great banquet. The church came together in expectation of Jesus' return and the full establishment of the Kingdom. The Lord's Supper gathered the people of God around the table to celebrate that immanent reality and strengthen hearts in the time of waiting. For this reason kneeling and fasting were prohibited in the early church on Sundays. Celebration was the tone! When we gather as a Christian community it can, on the right occasion, be healthy to spend some time in reflection, soberness, mourning and lamenting. Whether that should be specifically tied to the communion is another question. The common practices around the idea of being sober at communion are tradition, not biblical command nor precedent. That does not in themselves make it wrong to practice such things, but they are a choice, not a matter or obedience or even ‘best practice'. Jesus instituted a new covenant in his blood, and a new covenant is not a cause for mourning, but a cause for rejoicing. Soberness is not ruled out, but if the Lord's Supper is not a time of celebration we are missing something vital to our spiritual health. The Lord's Supper is one of the most important practices in which we participate as a Christian community, but the number of specific Bible verses on the topic are few. What do you make of this? Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Is it theological, technical, practical? Tim grew up in London (Ontario), a small city between Detroit and Toronto. He had a happy childhood, but needed to live a closeted existence as his environment was hostile. After moving to the big city as a young adult, he quickly began to flourish. He lived a life surrounded by art and the artistic endeavour and lived within the irreverent energy that it exuded. Not considering himself an ‘artist', this early adulthood life experience shaped his ambitions to the core nonetheless. He soon began to understand how irreverence in the arts brought people together, created culture and helped changed beliefs. Over his career, he has become a globally recognized social entrepreneur in this space. We discuss how modernism in architecture began to focus away from people and give way to towers, plazas - and the car – and how we lost our way in creating places for people and stories and the emotional connection to both. We chat about the “activation” of a place, multisensorial dimensions and art as urban acupuncture. In line with our discussion with the late Hazel Henderson (ep 61), Tim talks about focusing on a bigger pie – not a bigger slice of what we already have.    To DONATE to the Behind Greatness podcast, please visit here: https://behindgreatness.org. Our conversation goes into many topics, including walking the spiritual path of mothering, children as our mirrors, the complexity of time, the portal of connected play, surrendering our will to God's divine plan, and the exhaustion of the "Super Mom" archeype. As the war in Ukraine continues, we focus on an extraordinary city which could well be the next Russian target, Odessa. A product of commerce and an effervescent example of urban economics, Odessa is cosmopolitan, tolerant, self-reinventing, brimming of various ethnicities, home to Russian intellectual greats Pushkin, Babel, Eisenstein and Jabotinsky. Today this great city is on the frontline. We explore its economy and history, and why destroying this city is akin to destroying an idea, which is why it will be impossible. We also highlight one of the darkest and least well known atrocities of the Holocaust. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

From the article, Politically Incorrect Prophets (Speaking Truth In an Age of Timidity) at www.ryanafrench.com, Ryan reveals six prophetic tensions facing preachers and saints in the Last Days: Truth vs. Timidity, Clarity vs. Confusion, Conviction vs. Compromise, Faith vs. Fear, Reverence vs. Irreverence & Power vs. Prosperity.
