Scripture Text: Festival of Lessons & Carols; Luke 2:1-7 The Rev. Dan Marotta
On this special Sunday we hear from God's word the story of his interactions with humanity and set the stage for Jesus's coming to earth as a baby. Between select lessons (scripture readings), we have a meditation on the preceding readings. The meditation on creation and the fall is by Beth Kirby, our Administrator and a postulant. The meditation on the prophetic readings of Jeremiah and Isaiah 7 is by Fr. David Trautman, our rector. The final meditation on the readings from Micah and Isaiah 11 is by Kim Harris, our Children's Director and Welcome Coordinator. If you like what you see, we hope you'll join us in person if you're in the area. Learn more about us: https://linktr.ee/servantsanglican https://www.servantsanglican.org/

Tune in this week as we continue our discussion on Advent and recap Lessons + Carols. Rev. Chris Dowd and Rev. Raegan Gilliland discuss Matthew 2:19-21. If you have any questions or comments for us please email chris@cumc.com – we would love to connect with you. The post OFF SCRIPT: Lessons + Carols appeared first on Christ United Methodist Church.
This Sunday, we celebrated the birth of Jesus with our annual Lessons & Carols service, an ancient church tradition of proclaiming the story of Jesus' first Advent through hymns and the reading of Scripture. The songs and stories of Christmas that we know so well have toppled kingdoms, delivered people, and transformed history. However, it's so easy for us to hear them year after year, and yet still miss the things that God is doing in our midst. As His people, we must be hungry for the hope and glory Christmas holds for the world, and celebrate Jesus' coming with wonder and amazement. We encourage you to prayerfully consider joining us in giving to our Living the Liturgy campaign at church.nyc/give.

The 9 lessons and Carols date back to 1880, where a bishop opened a special Christmas Eve service in a wood shed that he used has his cathedral in Truro, now present day Cornwall,Almost 40 years later, in 1918, King's College in Cambridge carried on the tradition, and has held the special Christmas Eve since. The services always began with “Once in David's Royal City”, the Carol we will be singing today, followed by 9 carols along with scripture readings to help tell the story of God's redemptive history, leading to the baby in the manger. In 1928, BBC began to broadcast the service over the radio, and, in 2022, YOU have the unique opportunity to hear this special service via our podcast! We hope you find this edifying this Advent season! This Advent Season, we have been exploring Christmas through different characters in the story of Jesus' birth, and this week, Pastor Suzy took a closer look at Mary in her sermonette for Lessons & Carols. Through Mary, we see a beautiful picture of what happens when the deep longings of both a people, and an individual, are fulfilled. The core longing of each person is to be loved, and at the end of the day, the Christmas story is a love story that we are invited to recognize, respond to, participate in, and witness about to the all the world.
Each year we pause to reflect on God's story of redemption as we wait for the coming of Jesus on Christmas. Fr. Alex Farmer contemplates how God allows us to participate in the work of redemption. Christmas Eve Service of Lessons & Carols with Communion
Once a year we have a special service of lessons (readings of Scripture) and carols (festive songs of the season). As liturgical folks, we tend not to celebrate Christmas before Christmas day, opting instead to read Scripture and sing songs that point us to the coming of the Lord, both in the past and the future. Fr. Alex is preaching this week. If you like what you hear, you can learn more about us at https://www.servantsanglican.org/ https://linktr.ee/servantsanglican
