See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Order of Service: - Prelude - The Confession of Sin (p. 120) - Hymn 257 - When in the Hour of Utmost Need - The Versicles (pp. 120-121) - The Gloria Patri (p. 121) - Mark 15:21-32: Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take. Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him. And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS. With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.” And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself, and come down from the cross!” Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him. - O Come and Mourn: Quartet - Homily - Hymn 285 - Jesus Christ, Our Lord Most Holy - The Kyrie (p. 124) - The Lord's Prayer (p. 125) - Hymn 584 - Grant Peace, We Pray, in Mercy, Lord - The Collect (pp. 125-127) - The Benedicamus (p. 127) - The Benediction (p. 127) - Hymn 275 - We Bless Thee, Jesus Christ Our Lord - Postlude Service Participants: Chaplain Don Moldstad (Preacher), Rev.

This week, we continued our Christmas series by looking at JOY—not the seasonal kind, not the kind you fake for a photo, but the deep, settled joy Scripture talks about. We contrasted what our culture offers with what Jesus brings:Happiness is fragile—it rises and falls with circumstances.Joy is anchored—it comes from Someone, not something.Support the show

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music
Send us a textWhat happens when you change one word in the title of a classic Christmas hymn? A new perspective and a fresh reason to dive into Scripture. This week's song, “O Come, All You Unfaithful” by Sovereign Grace Music, invites us to consider the people God included in the Christmas story—and how we are just like them. This song flips the script on who is invited to come and see what God has done. Instead of calling the faithful to gather in celebration, it beckons the weary, the broken, and the unfaithful—the ones who feel disqualified. That single word change in the title opens the door for us to explore the heart of God revealed in Scripture: a God who draws near to the weak and the waiting, the guilty and the hiding, and offers hope through Christ's birth.Key PointsThe opening line of this song—“O come, all you unfaithful”—offers a perspective shift worth exploring. The lyrics list characteristics that mirror real people in the Christmas narrative: Weak and unstableBarrenWaitingWeary of prayingBitter and brokenFears unspokenGuiltyHidingGod included these kinds of people in His redemption story—and He invites us too.Hosea's prophecy reminds us of God's faithfulness despite our unfaithfulness. We are unfaithful until we are redeemed by the Faithful One—Jesus.Scriptures ReferencedMatthew 1–2 and Luke 1–2 (Christmas narrative)Luke 1:5–7; 11–20 (Zechariah and Elizabeth)Luke 2:8–9; 25; 38 (Shepherds, Simeon, and Anna)Matthew 1:18–20; 24 (Joseph's obedience)James 2:5 (God chooses the poor)Hosea 2:16–20; 6:3; 6:6–7 (God's steadfast love and faithfulness)BITEs (Bible Interaction Tool Exercises)Read in context—Matthew 1–2 and Luke 1–2Read aloud—alone or with a friendShare with a friend—Share Scripture with someone over coffee and Christmas cookiesCompare and contrast—Compare and contrast God's faithfulness with the faithlessness of His people in Hosea's prophecy Remember, the people in Scripture were real—just like usAdditional ResourcesDownload the free Episode GuideLyrics - New Release TodayBible Interaction Roadmap Bible Study - videos and assignments that will equip you with habits you can use over and over in your own Bible Study - Learn MoreLearn more about my favorite Bible Study Software with a 30-day free trial and links to my favorite Bible resources - Logos Bible Software Affiliate LinkThis Week's ChallengeRead Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2. In this final Advent music episode, Nicole Unice explores the beloved hymn “O Come, All You Faithful” as a powerful invitation—not just to celebrate Christmas, but to respond to it. Rather than merely observing the season, listeners are invited to come, behold, adore, and worship Christ as the center of the Christmas story. Drawing from Scripture across the Old and New Testaments, Nicole unpacks how this hymn calls us into joyful worship, faithful perseverance, and intentional participation in the life of Christ. This episode closes the Christmas hymns series with a reminder that true joy is found not in tradition alone, but in worshiping Jesus as Lord. Key Takeaways / Learning Points Joy is a posture of worship, not just a feeling Jesus is not just part of the Christmas story—He is the center of it Worship is the natural response to beholding Christ Faithfulness means continuing to receive God’s love, even in imperfection Christmas invites us to actively respond, not passively observe When we adore Christ, our hearts find true rest and alignment Bible Verses Referenced Psalm 100:1–2 – Worship the Lord with joyhttps://www.biblestudytools.com/psalms/100-1.html Micah 5:2 – The prophecy of Bethlehemhttps://www.biblestudytools.com/micah/5-2.html Matthew 2 – The Magi worship Jesushttps://www.biblestudytools.com/matthew/2.html Luke 2:8–20 – Angels announce Christ’s birthhttps://www.biblestudytools.com/luke/2-8.html John 1:1–14 – The Word became fleshhttps://www.biblestudytools.com/john/1-14.html Colossians 1:15–17 – Christ supreme over creationhttps://www.biblestudytools.com/colossians/1-15.html Revelation 5:12 – Worthy is the Lambhttps://www.biblestudytools.com/revelation/5-12.html Resources Mentioned: Free Christmas Eve Family Liturgyhttps://nicoleunice.com/christmas Hymn: “O Come, All You Faithful” Author Quote: C.S. “That deep ache you feel isn’t something to fix—it’s a holy longing for the Savior your soul was made to know.” In this special Advent series kickoff, Nicole Unice invites listeners to rediscover the heart of one of the most beloved Christmas hymns, O Come, O Come Emmanuel. With a blend of Scripture, history, and reflection, Nicole explores how this ancient song—written over 1,200 years ago—echoes the human ache for redemption and the promise of “God with us.” Learn how the minor-key melody captures our longing for restoration, how its lyrics draw from 29 different Bible passages, and how Emmanuel’s arrival transforms our grief into hope. Main Takeaways / Learning Points Advent invites longing: The season begins with honest reflection on our need for a Savior before celebrating His arrival. Scripture weaves through song: The six verses of O Come, O Come Emmanuel reference nearly 30 Bible passages, from Isaiah’s prophecies to the Gospels. Exile and redemption: Israel’s captivity mirrors humanity’s spiritual exile—and Emmanuel’s coming brings true homecoming. God with us today: Jesus’ name, Emmanuel, assures us that we are never alone. His presence transforms sorrow, fear, and uncertainty into peace and courage. Worship deepens memory: When we sing truth, it roots in our hearts—anchoring our minds to God’s promises long after the song ends. Bible Verse References (linked) Isaiah 7:14 — “The virgin will conceive... and call him Emmanuel.” Isaiah 35:10 — “The ransomed of the Lord will return to Zion with singing.” Isaiah 9:2 — “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.” Luke 1:78–79 — “The dayspring from on high has visited us.” 1 Corinthians 15:54–57 — “Death is swallowed up in victory.” Galatians 4:4 — “When the fullness of time had come, God sent His Son.” Calls to Action (CTAs) Download Nicole’s free Christmas Eve Family Liturgy: nicoleunice.com/christmas Subscribe to How to Study the Bible for more Advent reflections. Spent a little longer than I intended to address the "controversy" on line regarding Skillet's great rendition of O Come, O Come Emmanuel, and then moved on to comments made by Matthew Barrett on "conciliar authority" and being a Baptist. Right toward the end we mentioned the new trailer(s) for an upcoming Christian Nationalism documentary and how really dumb it is to say Christianity is "fake and gay."
John Cooper of Skillet responds to the controversy over their rendition of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/conversations-that-matter8971/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
