One of my all-time favourite guests on the pod today, likely because she's one of my all- time favourite people. Kathleen Wynne, 25th Premier of Ontario is here. If you're a fan of the Air Quotes Media online universe at AirQuotesMedia.com, you also know that Kathleen is a regular contributor to “Quotes”, our written forum of opinion pieces. In fact, just last month, she wrote a metaphoric thought piece titled “In the Bleak Midwinter”. It came in the immediate wake of Chrystia Freeland's resignation. It pondered what comes next for the Federal Liberal Party. And it called for unity of purpose – not partisanship – as we head into a new and likely contentious relationship with our southern neighbours. All topics we're going to expand on here today. Plus a few others, I'm sure.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. This week, our holiday episode is about an obscure little offbeat Christmas film that means a lot to us personally, A Midwinter's Tale - or In the Bleak Midwinter, if you're outside the US. Kenneth Branagh wrote and directed (but uncharacteristically, did not act in) this film about Joe Harper, an out-of-work actor who decides that an independent Christmas production of Hamlet is just the thing to somehow pull him out of his depression and get back on track. Fortunately, the magic of Shakespeare and live performance do come around in the end to remind Joe what life is all about. We discuss the unique relationships formed when working in theater (especially broke indie theater), the high emotions that occur when a group of actors are trapped together for long periods of time, how rehearsal and character work often beget psychological introspection, and this film's place as an unsung Christmas classic that harkens back to better known holiday fare like It's A Wonderful Life. This episode is for the entertainers--the people who are often out there working through the holidays, often for little more than the love of performing, creating family when they can't be with their own. Come tread the boards with us!

Strange Truths and Tall Tales: Product of Newfoundland

If you're from Newfoundland, you probably already know that Tibb's Eve means December 23rd. It's the unofficial start of Christmas—when the holiday buzz really kicks in and everyone's back home, ready to reconnect with old friends. But Tibb's Eve didn't always mean celebration. Once upon a time, it was actually known as a day that would never come—a day ‘neither before nor after Christmas,' in other words, it was never supposed to happen at all. Now, how did it land on December 23rd? Well, that's a bit of a mystery. No one really knows, but somehow, it did. And now, we get to enjoy it—a day that was never meant to be, has become an early start to holiday celebrations. It's a day of friends and fun. This episode's story is set on Tibb's Eve, in the picturesque and historic town of Trinity (a place that's especially cozy and charming at Christmas). In the story Tibb's Eve becomes a night when time doesn't quite follow the usual rules. So, grab a hot drink, settle in, and join Clara as she finds herself in a Tibb's Eve evening she'll never forget.CreditsOcean and Fog Horn, Shepardr, freesound.org, creative commons 0Musical Snow Globe - We Wish You A Merry Christmas, mhtaylor67, freesound.org, creative commons 0Multi-sounding jingle bells 001 - Fast, wastefield, freesound.org, creative commons 0In the Bleak Midwinter, United States Air Force Band of the Rockies, Stellar Brass; Recording: United States Air Force, Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsSources & Further ReadingWhat The Heck is Tibb's Eve, Product of NewfoundlandThe Many Mummers of Newfoundland, Product of Newfoundland Coming Home for Tibb's Eve, Product of NewfoundlandTrinity Historical Society

Harry and Rafe start with the idea of a bleak midwinter, dart down some rabbit holes and tell some stories of old shenanigans, and end up on Christmas carols, in particular Sleigh Ride, O Holy Night, Cradle in Bethlehem, Still, Still, Still, and Joseph's Song.  Particular attention is paid to Paul Cardall's splendid instrumental version of Still, Still, Still, which serves as the intro and outro tunes for the episode. In the end, they come to the conclusion that Christmas should be done very intentionally to be done well, and that means starting with Advent and then fully embracing the thrill of Hope that Christmas gives to a weary world.*****As always, you can reach the Buf at bufnagle@bufnagle.com*****As you know, this is an independent podcast so your hosts also carry all the expenses of running this podcast. Here in America, the day after Christmas is simply that: the day after. The party's over. But in England, it's an official holiday. December 26 — Boxing Day — is the Christmas afterparty you've been missing out on. What's the story? And what does it have to do with boxing? In 1995, Kenneth Branagh - between the giant projects of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and his film version of Hamlet - made an utterly charming low budget comedy called In The Bleak Midwinter. He paid for the film himself, bringing together a bunch of actors to tell the story of, well, a bunch of actors. A company who happened to be putting on a Christmas Eve performance of Hamlet. In December 2023, after years of trying, we managed to bring them all together for a special screening of the film. And what you're going to hear in this podcast episode is the conversation afterwards. Bear in mind that they'd all sat and watched the film collectively for the first time in over 25 years just before this conversation took place! The evening was raising funds for Centrepoint, of which you can find more here: https://centrepoint.org.uk/support-us/donate?utm_source=jaagoogleads&utm_medium=ppc&utm_campaign=csarppc23&utm_content=&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQiA4Y-sBhC6ARIsAGXF1g6ofP7eioHgWYRsjB-cDrmSTNDzeegNsuExmtsqt6Ot4jVhAO_4DL4aAipxEALw_wcB Hosted on Acast. This week's episode is dedicated to those we love and miss, to encourage us all – me included – to take all the time we need to feel all the things we are going to feel in the days ahead. I hope you find this episode to be a comfort.  Of course I am not going to tell you how to be or what to do as you face Christmas without a loved one, or face it carrying any other sense of grief. What I am going to do is share some ideas for pausing, honouring and remembering our loved ones, along with some gentle advice from people who work with bereaved families, and some beautiful poems and readings which I hope will offer us some comfort. In March this year my lovely mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer out of the blue, and died in a hospice three weeks later. I was by her side for nearly all of that time. It was devastating in its brevity and impact, but it was also just about enough time for us to leave nothing unsaid. We talked about Christmas, and she gave me some ideas for this season of the podcast, particularly for this episode. When I think about that now, I am floored by her bravery and selflessness, and the way that in having those conversations, she has managed to give us a Christmas gift this year too. I hope this episode will give you an opportunity to pause, honour and remember those you love and miss, and find some joy and light in this darkest of seasons. This episode includes: Gentle ideas for pausing, honouring and remembering those we love and missA beautiful ritual for connecting with the memory and light of a loved one (you might want to bring a candle, some matches, a notebook and a pen)How the Five Stories of Christmas can help us feel close to our loved onesPermission not to have a ‘happy Christmas'Some gorgeous poems and readingsA writing prompt to help you get your feelings down on paperA lovely craft ideaChristmas traditions from around the world (from lovely listeners!)Our nature corner, welcoming the Winter SolsticeGet ahead tips before Christmas is upon usAnd a blessing for youPLUS A self-care giveaway (enter on my Instagram @bethkempton)With inspiration from:@donnaashworthwords @optionb @andygrammer @stoswaldsuk @joannemallon Bertolt Brecht, Sarah Crossnan, Dana Gioia, @sheep1sh Neil Astley, Pamela Robertson-Pearce, Phillis Levin, @thehungryyear Kevin Young, Ashley Muller, @glass_walls_life Austie M Baird, Cherie Arnitt, @warsanshiree @williamsieghart, Robert Frost, @lydiamillen @lia_leendertz @rebeccacampbell_author @katecbowler, John O'DonohueLeave a note remembering your loved one on the self-care giveaway post on my Instagram @bethkempton here. https://instagram.com/bethkemptonYou can find all the show notes including to all featured books here.Handy links:·      The Life-Changing Magic of Writing Haiku (free essay on my Substack) ·      St Oswald's Hospice donation link (where Brenda works) ·      Escape to a cosy world of words in my Winter Writing Sanctuary (FREE) December 28-January 6  This week's giveaway·      Chance to win some lovely self-care goodies and a personalized signed copy of my book Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year over on @bethkempton on Instagram Beth Xx
