The devotional analyzes "In the Bleak Midwinter" (1872 poem set to music in 1906) by Christina Rossetti, praising it as a profound expression of Christ's humility and the mystery of the Incarnation. The teaching focused on three main Scriptural and theological connections: Humility and Righteousness (Micah 6:8): Jesus' birth in a lowly condition (manger, poor parents) is the ultimate demonstration of God walking "humbly." This week, our holiday episode is about an obscure little offbeat Christmas film that means a lot to us personally, A Midwinter's Tale - or In the Bleak Midwinter, if you're outside the US. Kenneth Branagh wrote and directed (but uncharacteristically, did not act in) this film about Joe Harper, an out-of-work actor who decides that an independent Christmas production of Hamlet is just the thing to somehow pull him out of his depression and get back on track. Fortunately, the magic of Shakespeare and live performance do come around in the end to remind Joe what life is all about. We discuss the unique relationships formed when working in theater (especially broke indie theater), the high emotions that occur when a group of actors are trapped together for long periods of time, how rehearsal and character work often beget psychological introspection, and this film's place as an unsung Christmas classic that harkens back to better known holiday fare like It's A Wonderful Life. This episode is for the entertainers--the people who are often out there working through the holidays, often for little more than the love of performing, creating family when they can't be with their own. It's the unofficial start of Christmas—when the holiday buzz really kicks in and everyone's back home, ready to reconnect with old friends. But Tibb's Eve didn't always mean celebration. Once upon a time, it was actually known as a day that would never come—a day ‘neither before nor after Christmas,' in other words, it was never supposed to happen at all.Now, how did it land on December 23rd? Well, that's a bit of a mystery. No one really knows, but somehow, it did. And now, we get to enjoy it—a day that was never meant to be, has become an early start to holiday celebrations. It's a day of friends and fun.This episode's story is set on Tibb's Eve, in the picturesque and historic town of Trinity (a place that's especially cozy and charming at Christmas). In the story Tibb's Eve becomes a night when time doesn't quite follow the usual rules.
