Listen along as Anthony continues our series through the book of Acts. Notes//Quotes: Acts 1:12-26 - Scott Reading Title: The Space Between “To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world.” - Karl Barth “One reason why the experiential reality of perceiving God is unfamiliar country today is that the pace and preoccupations of urbanized, mechanized, collectivized, secularized modern life are such that any sort of inner life... is very hard to maintain. To make prayer your life priority, as countless Christians of former days did outside as well as inside the monastery, is stupendously difficult in a world that runs you off your feet and will not let you slow down. And if you attempt it, you will certainly seem eccentric to your peers, for nowadays involvement in a stream of programmed activities is decidedly ‘in,' and the older ideal of a quiet, contemplative life is just as decidedly ‘out.' That there is widespread hunger today for more intimacy, warmth, and affection in our fellowship with God is clear... but the concept of Christian life as sanctified rush and bustle still dominates, and as a result the experiential side of Christian holiness remains very much a closed book.” - J.I. Packer “There are no more lots after the coming of the Holy Spirit. It's a shame isn't it? I mean life would be a lot easier if we just had to draw lots to know God's will, but evidently that's not how he wants it. The Spirit is who is in our hearts helps makes these things clear. One of my favorite prayers is, God will you make it so clear that there's no choice? I hate choice. Of the eighteen possible variations, just make seventeen go away will you, because I'm not real bright and I don't always get these things. I'm still hoping for casting lots to come back into use, but I'm not going to hold my breath.” - William Mounce “As much as modern Christians love to talk about successes, sometimes the failures of the church need airing.” - Holman Commentary {Verse 1} Free fall, feet off the ground A clean, white page, fresh snow, no sound Here as we wait, from dark to dawn New paths before us, the old is gone {Chorus 1} Unplug the lights, take down the tree The less we have, the less we need From Christmas night to New Year's Eve We bless the space that's in between We bless the space that's in between {Verse 2} December ends, make way for dreams Wait for the light to raise the spring Embrace it all from hope to doubt Like ocean waves washin' in and out {Chorus 2} Two roads apart, come close again Where do you stop? Where do I begin? Each year we learn more what it means We bless the space that's in between We bless the space that's in between {Bridge} We bless the seeds under the snow We bless the patience take it slow We bless the limits, bless the tears We bless the failures that brought us here {Verse 3} I wipe the frost the glass is cold Our dreams beneath the falling snow Be Thou my vision until I see And bless the space that's in between - Sandra McCracken & Josh Garrels O Almighty God, you pour out your spirit of grace and of supplication on all who desire it. Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from cold hearts and wandering minds, that with steady thoughts and kindled passion we may worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. -adapted from the Book of Common Prayer
Lent is a time for reflection and reorientation toward Jesus. Good music can help us with both of these things. Today I get to talk with singer-songwriter Sandra McCracken about the practice of Lent and how hymns can help us face our humanity and bring it all to Jesus. The topic for the evening is, “A New Sexual Revolution: Living as Image Bearers, Male and Female.” Our culture today is confused about what it means to be male and female because it's lost sight of what men and women are for. God's Word tells us that God created men and women to bear His own image in the world. Join us for this event to learn how to recover a Christian vision for living as embodied, male and female image bearers of God before a watching world. This is a free event, but spaces are limited. Passage: 1 “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it or sells it, he shall repay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. 2 If a thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt for him, 3 but if the sun has risen on him, there shall be bloodguilt for him. He shall surely pay. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 4 If the stolen beast is found alive in his possession, whether it is an ox or a donkey or a sheep, he shall pay double. 5 If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed over, or lets his beast loose and it feeds in another man's field, he shall make restitution from the best in his own field and in his own vineyard. 6 If fire breaks out and catches in thorns so that the stacked grain or the standing grain or the field is consumed, he who started the fire shall make full restitution. 7 If a man gives to his neighbor money or goods to keep safe, and it is stolen from the man's house, then, if the thief is found, he shall pay double. 8 If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall come near to God to show whether or not he has put his hand to his neighbor's property. 9 For every breach of trust, whether it is for an ox, for a donkey, for a sheep, for a cloak, or for any kind of lost thing, of which one says, ‘This is it,' the case of both parties shall come before God. The one whom God condemns shall pay double to his neighbor.” (Exodus 22:1-9) Song: The Zacchaeus Song by Sandra McCracken and Paul Zach Lyrics: Jesus our Lord came to seek and to save He sought me out and He called me by name Foolish and proud, like a sheep gone astray He said: Child, to your house I will come today Much I have gained but I'll give even more Half of my wealth it was robbed from the poor O this injustice! Lord, help me restore For you called me by name and said: Sin no more Salvation has come Salvation has come to this house today He said it's more blessed to give than receive To open my hands to the one's I've deceived To bring reparation of all I have thieved Hallelujah, hallelujah, yes, now I can see Salvation has come Salvation has come to this house today What I've taken from the poor: I will give it all away And their cries won't be i - gnored: I will give it all away Let Your justice be re - stored: I will give it all away What I thought was mine is yours: I will give it all away Jesus our Lord comes to seek and to save The broken, the lost, and the sheep gone astray O lay down your treasures, for they're just golden chains He say: Child, I will come to your house today Prayer: “O heavenly Father, whose law is perfect, converting the soul; a sure testimony, giving wisdom to the unlearned, and enlightening the eyes—we humbly implore you, through your boundless goodness, to enlighten our blind intellect by your Holy Spirit, so that we may truly understand and profess your law and live according to it. Since it has pleased you, most merciful Father, to reveal the mysteries of your will only to the little ones; and since you look to him alone who is of a humble and contrite spirit, who has reverence for your Word, grant us a humble spirit and keep us from all fleshly wisdom, which is enmity against you. Bring to the right way those who stray from the truth, so that we all may unanimously serve you in holiness and righteousness, all the days of our life. We ask this from you, most merciful Father, in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.” —Martin Micronius
The prophesy of a Messiah in old testament scripture was interpreted by some as God sending one who would bring about political peace for the Jewish people. In reality, the Messiah, Jesus, brought about a personal peace for those who believe in Him and focus on His message in their daily lives, even during the toughest personal storms. Passage: 1 Listen, Shepherd of Israel, who leads Joseph like a flock; you who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shine 2 on Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Rally your power and come to save us. 3 Restore us, God; make your face shine on us, so that we may be saved. 4 Lord God of Armies, how long will you be angry with your people's prayers? 5 You fed them the bread of tears and gave them a full measure of tears to drink. 6 You put us at odds with our neighbors; our enemies mock us. 7 Restore us, God of Armies; make your face shine on us, so that we may be saved. -- Psalms 80:1-7 (CSB) Song: Once in Royal David's City (https://open.spotify.com/track/63iIFSAR77Tl5WXuZwtvr4?si=2dfc2452db85495e) by Cecil Frances Humphreys Alexander and Henry John Gauntlett, arr. Sandra McCracken, Laura Story, and Matt Papa Lyrics: Once in royal David's city Stood a lowly cattle shed Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for His bed Mary was that mother mild Jesus Christ her little Child He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all And His shelter was a stable And His cradle was a stall With the poor and meek and lowly Lived on earth our Saviour holy Jesus is our childhood's pattern Day by day like us He grew He was little weak and helpless Tears and smiles like us He knew And He feels for all our sadness And He shares in all our gladness And our eyes at last shall see Him Through His own redeeming love For that Child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heaven above And He leads His children on To the place where He has gone Prayer: Almighty God, who sees that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves, keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. -The Gregorian Sacramentary

Trump Wins, Good Faith Reacts America elected a new president, and a familiar administration is poised to return to the White House. What does it all mean for Christians? Host Curtis Chang is joined by "founding friend" David French and public theologian Russell Moore to explore the intense emotions many are experiencing in the wake of this election. Together, they dive into listener questions about the global repercussions of another Trump presidency, the complex feelings some Christians experience about the political choices of fellow believers, and the evolving role of the church in a deeply divided America. Confronting shared experiences of anguish, alienation, and anger, the trio offers thoughtful insights into how we can navigate this challenging landscape of emotions about the known and unknown implications of the vote. Today, we invite you to join us as Sandra McCracken and Stephanie explore the interplay of faith, cultural insights, and the essence of beauty in worship music. Stephanie sits down with renowned musician Sandra McCracken to dive into the multifaceted ways God uses to connect us to Him, including beauty, language, and culture. Their conversation touches on various facets—from the linguistic richness of French expressions of delight and light, to the role of the local church and the importance of worship. Join us as we explore how experiencing God's beauty through nature, music, and community can deepen our spiritual journey. Sandra McCracken's songwriting serves as a rich medium to convey scriptural truths and draw us deep in worship through music. Her goal is to help people delight in God's presence through her music, creating songs that resonate with the heart's deepest longings. She shares how singing these truths repeatedly helps align her heart with them, even amid doubts or fears. Her work embodies the connection between light and delight, encouraging us to find joy and hope in God's presence. Let's talk about beauty for a minute. In today's fast-paced, technology-driven world, the perception of beauty can often become obscured. Sandra and Stephanie discuss the necessity of slowing down to truly appreciate and experience deeper, non-disposable beauty. Pausing to engage with our surroundings and community, allows us to witness God's presence in the ordinary moments of life. By embracing this slower pace, we open ourselves up to deeper intimacy with God, finding beauty and inspiration in the everyday and the extraordinary alike. Beauty serves as a 'homing device,' drawing us toward God. Whether through the breathtaking landscapes of Yellowstone and Tetons or through the creative brilliance of European architecture, beauty reveals the hand of the divine in our world. Stephanie echoes this sentiment by highlighting how the unique expressions of beauty in different cultures enrich our spiritual experience, offering a fuller understanding of God's nature. During her visit to a botanical garden in Colorado, Sandra was struck by the diverse beauty of the garden, from the tall milkweeds to the fluttering butterflies. The process of pruning in gardening parallels life's trials. Just as a gardener prunes to encourage growth and beauty, God, the "master gardener," prunes us through life's challenges. Although this process can be uncomfortable, it is essential for our spiritual growth and transformation. Embracing this divine pruning allows us to develop into the people God intends us to be. The conversation takes a deeper turn as Sandra explores the concept of true beauty through the lens of the cross. The cross represents the epitome of humility, sacrifice, and power, embodying the ultimate beauty in the biblical narrative. Facing our brokenness within a community helps us understand and experience God's beauty in a transformative way. This vulnerability and honesty before God and one another reflect the beauty that comes from embracing our imperfections and relying on divine grace. Sandra invites us to consider how beauty, language, and community play pivotal roles in our faith journey. From the linguistic richness of French to Jesus' teaching on pruning, Sandra encourages us to slow down, appreciate beauty, and engage deeply with our faith communities. Through her music and reflections, Sandra McCracken helps us find delight in God's light, inviting us into a richer, more authentic experience of God in Christ. This book is written in three parts: part one is the becoming, the creation, how God makes us and gives us an identity. Part two is the disorientation of loss, displacement, and the dark night of the soul. Part three is reorientation, how God brings us through the darkness and illuminates our path with Scripture, sending us out to take his light to others. This has been the shape of Sandra McCracken's life. Through it all, songs and Scripture have been there to light the way, helping her respond to God's call. How will you respond to God's call to send out his light? We invite you to check out the first episode of each of our series, and decide which one you will want to start with. “Rock of Ages, my great hope secure. Your promise holds just like an anchor to my soul. Bind your children with cords of love and grace. Rock of Ages, we give you praise.”— Sandra McCracken, “Rock of Ages (When the Day Seems Long)” 1 Corinthians 9:15-27
Welcome to this conversation with two people who really inspire me, Andi Ashworth and Charlie Peacock. They provide ample hope from further down the road - having accumulated decades of wisdom in the public square as Nashville music producing influencers. Dare I say - few people have influenced our generation through music more powerfully than they have. I read their book, meaningfully titled “Why everything that doesn't matter, matters so much” and then awaited this conversation with giddiness, anticipation, excitement, a little bit of shyness. Maybe I was – and still am? – a little starstruck? I will let you decide. Have you ever asked, what can I do to mend the world, to mend my family or my own life? And if I could, is it worth it? Should I bother? Does my own small part in the world really matter? And so today, multi-Grammy-winner Charlie Peacock and his wife, delightful author Andy Ashworth, come to share their encouragement. Their book is a collection of 16 essays or letters. They are here to share their wisdom, calling us to discover and to join God's mission to love and care for a very hurting world. They are sharing with honesty, vulnerability, humility and wisdom from their own life experiences. They are beloved and trusted mentors. They invite us into a thought-provoking exploration of the many facets of the Christian culture care and culture-making in all areas - from the kitchen, hospitality, generosity, gardening all the way to Carnegie Hall and Grammy Awards. They talk to us about the theology of imagination and creativity, a vocation that provides a framework for all of life. I've found them providing a model for expressing love in marriage, in friendship, in citizenship, and every kind of work, even in the midst of our culture of cynicism, fear, exhaustion, oppression. I have found that each one of these 16 letters is a gentle, wise, humble, vulnerable, and thought-provoking nudge in the direction of God's powerfully ordinary purpose for each one of us. It doesn't matter what the future holds because we're invited to participate fully in the beautiful redemptive work of Christ. Can you begin to see why I can't wait to share this conversation with you? I hope you join us. Andrew Peterson is, as the old saying goes, a “man of many parts.” I first discovered Andrew's music in the late 1990s, when his song “Nothing to Say” first became a favorite – and it still is. I began following his musical career and quickly discovered that he had more on his mind that music. He was building a community of artists in Nashville that were slowly making something great. Musicians such as Ben Shive, Sandra McCracken, Jill Phillips, Andy Gullahorn, Andrew Osenga, and many others started collaborating on each other's projects. Many of them became a part of Andrew's annual “Behold The Lamb of God” tour, which has become an annual Christmas tradition for many of us. An Easter tour, called “Resurrection Letters,” just finished a 15-city run. In fact, I got to see it and hang out with Andrew here in North Carolina near the end of that tour last week. Andrew Peterson's creative energy has other outlets, too. His Wingfeather Saga books have sold more than a million copies, and it's now an animated series. The second season drops this week. He also founded a non-profit organization called The Rabbit Room, with his brother Pete Peterson, a fine writer himself. The Rabbit Room hosts events and concerts and now has a headquarters in Nashville, called Northwind Manor, which has become a gathering place and work space for writers and artists of all kinds. We talk about all of this and a lot more in this conversation I had with Andrew Peterson last week via zoom. Though we covered a lot of territory in this interview, the “breaking news” here, as we say in the world of journalism, is that Season Two of the Wingfeather Saga just dropped from Angel Studios. If you get a chance, check it out. The producer of today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Here at MinistryWatch we get technical, editorial, and database support from Christina Darnell, Kim Roberts, Rod Pitzer, Casey Sudduth, and Stephen duBarry. And in the spirit of Andrew Peterson's Resurrection Letters, let me mention that Easter is not a day, but a season, so let me wish you a happy and joyous Easter season, and – until we meet again with Natasha Cowden on Friday for our weekly news round-up…May God Bless You!

Wednesday Notes | Ps 89:1-18 Opening Song: O Lord, open our lips and our mouths will declare Your praise. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen. The Scripture for today is Psalm 89:1-18. Let's prepare our hearts to hear from God's word as we listen to I Will Sing by Leslie Jordan and Sandra McCracken. Relaxed piano chords and atmospheric percussion provide the backdrop for the vintage-sounding vocals. Brief and simple verses give way to a joyful, uplifted chorus–a song that feels appropriate for a sunny afternoon of praise, with modernized text inspired by the original psalm. Lyrics: With my mouth I will tell of Your faithfulness I'll declare Lord Your covenant with my life I will sing of the Lord's great love forever I will sing of the Lord's great love I will sing of the Lord's great love forever I will sing oh I will sing Lord You are the glory of all our strength Your presence along the way for all our days Oh Lord God Almighty who is like You Oh Lord God Almighty none beside You Oh Lord God Almighty All the earth and sky belong to You Of His great love I will sing Passage: 1 I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. 2 For I said, “Steadfast love will be built up forever; in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness.” 3 You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: 4 ‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.'” Selah 5 Let the heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones! 6 For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD? Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD, 7 a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all who are around him? 8 O LORD God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O LORD, with your faithfulness all around you? 9 You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them. 10 You crushed Rahab like a carcass; you scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. 11 The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours; the world and all that is in it, you have founded them. 12 The north and the south, you have created them; Tabor and Hermon joyously praise your name. 13 You have a mighty arm; strong is your hand, high your right hand. 14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. 15 Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O LORD, in the light of your face, 16 who exult in your name all the day and in your righteousness are exalted. 17 For you are the glory of their strength; by your favor our horn is exalted. 18 For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel. (Psalm 89:1–18 ESV) Musical Reflection: “Air on the G String” from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major by J.S. Bach Reflection Notes: The slow, descending bass line creates musical “steps” in an elegant fashion while a suspended melody several octaves above creates a satisfying combination of sound registers. Prayer: O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Sunday's Sermon: Faith Works (https://alisocreekchurchpodcast.fireside.fm/175) Opening: O Lord, open our lips and our mouths will declare Your praise. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen. The Scripture for today is James 2:14-26. Passage: 14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead. (James 2:14–26 ESV) Song: See How Good It Is (Psalm 133) (https://open.spotify.com/track/6JP4aICrMV0HqNH5bGESvR?si=532bfb6c96784fa3) by Sandra McCracken and Wendell Kimbrough Lyrics: See how good it is Gathering with friends Welcoming the stranger in See how good it is Sad divisions cease We're ordained as priests Spreading out God's joyful feast See how good it is When God's children live as one By the Spirit we become The open arms of God To a world in need of love See the earth renewed By the morning dew All creation sings the truth See how good it is Prayer: O God, at whose bidding man goes forth to his work and to his labor until the evening: grant us to cherish the lessons we have learned out of your holy Word. Support us when we are tested in duty, that in all our doings we may remember that you have chosen us that we should go and bear fruit and that our fruit should abide. -The Gelasian Sacramentary

God breaks into our lives, even in the dark places, giving hope to people like songwriter Sandra McCracken. Sandra shares her lifelong love of wrapping scripture into her life and work, and the delicate balance of holding lament and hope in both hands. Quotes “I think God's love comes at us from all angles, in all different directions. For me, it was bound up in music and words and being in the family that I was born into.” - Sandra McCracken “It's so important to not just put kind of a sunny take on everything that was, but to continue to tell our story in a way that is reflecting who we are, and how God has brought grace and deliverance to us, like over and over again.” - Sandra McCracken Guest's Links Sandra McCracken's Facebook Sandra McCracken's Instagram Sandra McCracken's Twitter Sandra McCracken's Website Resources Mentioned in This Episode We Will Feast in the House of Zion Steadfast The Mercy, My God Connect with Sally Lloyd-Jones Jesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*
Music has the ability to comfort, to inspire, to bring us to a place of worship. Sandra McCracken has been making music that does all of that for several decades. Sandra has had a successful solo career and has been a member of several influential and well-known groups. Perhaps best known for her recent work crafting songs from the Psalms intended for congregational singing, Sandra and Dan discuss the nature of songcraft in this episode. How does inspiration strike – or does it? And why the Psalms are such fertile ground to compose modern hymns. Table des matières 00:42 - Présentation d'Éric Ricard 08:03 - Introduction du sujet 58:20 - Hors-propos: Conférences de Raphaël Charrier au Québec 01:03:00 - Bêtisier
I've said it many times before, and I'm sure I'll continue to say it: one of the huge benefits of hosting a podcast is the opportunity to have conversations with amazing people. Today's episode is no exception because I was able to interview a singer-songwriter whose music I've admired for many years. Her name is Cindy Morgan, and she's a singer, songwriter, and author who weaves her incredible gift of storytelling into everything she does. Cindy is a two-time GRAMMY® nominee, a thirteen-time Dove award winner, and a recipient of the prestigious Songwriter of the Year trophy. She has 21 number one radio hits to her credit, and has written songs for notable artists including Vince Gill, India.Arie, Rascal Flatts, Ricky Skaggs, Amy Grant, Glen Campbell, Mandisa, Natalie Grant, Michael W. Smith, Point of Grace, Sandra McCracken, and many others. In 2017, Cindy's song “Bird in a Cage” was performed by Robert Redford and Sasha Lazard in the movie Blind starring Alec Baldwin and Demi Moore. Cindy has authored three books, Barefoot on Barbed Wire, Dance Me, Daddy, and her memoir, How Could I Ask for More, in addition to being a co-creator of the charitable Hymns for Hunger Tour, which has raised awareness and resources for hunger relief organizations across the globe. Cindy also has a brand-new novel, which just released yesterday. It's called The Year of Jubilee, and she was kind enough to come on the podcast and share about her storytelling process. Cindy and I talk about her process of writing the novel, her publishing strategy, where to begin and end a novel, the unique soundtrack she developed for the novel, and much more. This was a wide-ranging conversation. No matter what type of writing you do, you will come away with some amazing insights into the creative and storytelling process! Right in the middle of Holy Week, we dive into a beautiful hymn about looking to the example of Jesus every day of our lives. The disciples weren't perfect men, but they were teachable. Thickheaded many times, but with a humility to be taught through the example of the Savior. And that teachable spirit is what our hymn for this week is all about. Opening Song: Call Upon Him by Rachael Lampa, Sandra McCracken, and Trillia Newbell Lyrics: Call upon Him call upon Him There is power in the Name Call upon Him call upon Him There is power in the Name When I don't have the words When the spirit hurts When my sorrow's too deep to understand Will You hear my voice saying speak oh Lord Mighty God Healing King take my hand And in the night I pray When I feel afraid When there is no friend that I can see Can You hold me safe Can You break these chains Prince of Peace Father please set me free Passage: 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:9–17 ESV) Musical Reflection: All to Jesus I Surrender (SURRENDER) by Winfield S. Weeden Reflection Notes: This tune was originally intended to have two-part harmonies on the verse and four-part harmonies of the refrain; the additional harmonic fullness adds to the repeated emphasis of the words “I surrender all.” Prayer: Almighty God, through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, you revealed the way of eternal life to every race and nation: Pour out this gift anew, that by the preaching of the Gospel your salvation may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A little more obscure hymn than we usually do here at The Bright Forever... This is a hymn I had never heard of until a "retuning" of this song was first recorded by Caedmon's Call in 2001. It is actually just a little older than our country here in the United States. First published in March 1776 in The Gospel Magazine in England and attributed to John Stocker. Today, my dad, Steve Peavyhouse joins me to discuss the amazing lyrical wordplay of this song as we dive into the depths of God's mercy for us. Below you find a link to both the song from Indelible Grace Music and the article by the artist herself, Sandra McCracken, that I talk about during this episode. Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy this as much as we enjoyed recording it."Thy Mercy, My God" performed by Sandra McCracken from Indelible Grace MusicSupport the show www.thebrightforever.com

Follow along with these scriptures from the Gospel of Luke where we, too, get to hear that good news of God's promise coming true. You may want to listen and sing along to one rendition of how we might respond to that good news. It's a song called "Go Tell It On the Mountain" sung by Sandra McCracken, off of her Christmas album. Come! Let's pray and ponder. Together. Head over to restorationarlington.org for more information on Restoration and Pray & Ponder. Remember to subscribe so that you never miss a new episode.

So many Worship Leaders are so concerned about being accused of “performing” and not actually leading worship. Questions like “are we doing it well?” and “how did we sound?'' come before the important question of “did we see lives changed?'' and “did people meet Jesus?” There's a tension that exists between the space of worship and the space of performance. Accusations of “that church just puts on a show” are prevalent within the western Church and our megachurches have spent lots of tithe money on creating a highly produced Sunday service. One might even say that the light show on Sunday helps keep the lights on the rest of the week. Elias Dummer knows a thing or two about this topic of worship versus performance. As a former successful CCM artist and lead singer of the band The City Harmonic and as a songwriter and Worship Leader for his local church, he has a unique perspective based on his years of experience. In this episode he addresses this issue by bringing us back to the basics of how we were created. Hopefully, through this episode, our tribe will be able to remove the fear of creating a performance culture and just focus on doing worship well and connecting the congregation with God. This podcast is brought to you by Authentic Media and Worship Leader Magazine. Our host is Joshua Swanson and the show's co-producer and editor is Matt McCartie. More episodes can be found here: https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/ Who is Elias Dummer ? Elias Dummer co-founded and fronted one of Canada's most acclaimed worship bands, The City Harmonic. As the group's principal songwriter, he helped pen such hits as “Holy (Wedding Day)” and “Mountaintop,” as well as “Manifesto,” which served as the theme song for 2011's National Day of Prayer. The City Harmonic earned 12 GMA Canada Covenant Awards and a Juno Award (Canada's GRAMMY® equivalent), before disbanding in 2017. Dummer released his solo debut, The Work Vol. I, in 2019 and was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2020 Covenant Awards. Both as a solo artist and with The City Harmonic, Dummer's music has garnered more than 100 million streams to date. His latest album, The Work Vol. II, released July 29 and features collaborations with such artists as Sandra McCracken; Citizens' Zach Bolen; JJ Heller; and Land of Color.

In singer-songwriter Sandra McCracken's new book, “Send Out Your Light: The Illuminating Power of Scripture and Song”, you'll find the same depth of spiritual insight and emotion that characterize her songs. She writes, “If we sing songs with thin ideas, superficial hopes, and more hype than authenticity, we will find ourselves depleted in the times when we need some truth to fall back on. We need songs sturdy enough to sing at the bedside of a dying friend.”Sandra joins Collin Hansen on this episode of Gospelbound to discuss embodied worship, tortured artists, the Nashville sound, deconstruction, and more.
