St Bride's Church, Fleet Street
Reflection in words & music – Sunday 26th October 2025

Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music. The choir begins this week's reflection singing verses from Psalm 84 – "O how amiable are thy dwellings : thou Lord of hosts!" – to a chant by the English composer Sir Edward Bairstow. Bairstow was very much wedded to his dwelling place of Yorkshire, the county of his birth and where he served as Organist of York Minster for several decades until his death. He even turned down an offer to become Organist at Westminster Abbey and said of the suggestion that he follow a fellow composer to the United States that he would "rather go to the devil"! Our reading from Luke is the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. Alison reflects on how it reminds us that whenever we are tempted to view ourselves too favourably, we should remember that we — like all around us — are made from the same dust. We close with the hymn "Come down, O Love divine" which sets a fourteenth century text by Bianco da Siena – a member of the Order of Jesuates, a group of unordained men who followed the prescripts of St Augustine. The tune is Down Ampney by the great Ralph Vaughan Williams. Let's start episode 736 of Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast. This question was sent by Alessandro and he writes:I am writing to you to ask for advice about my situation as a passionate organist with health problems. I suffer from diabetes, therefore I have problems with the pedalboard to find the notes due to the decrease of the sense of position, typical of the disease. I also have vision problems with difficulty reading the three staves at the same time. I had built in the past, a good repertoire, even done some recitals. Now I feel like I have lost everything. I was already a slow learner, now it takes me a long time to study a piece. In a month I would like to show a friend the first movement of the Eb major Trio Sonata, and the Dorian Toccata by Bach, but the effort and the mistakes are so many, and, if I think that I mastered these pieces, I get discouraged and go days without practicing. I would almost like to start studying (or revising) the organ from scratch because I really like it a lot. I wanted to ask you if you have any advice or any of your courses to propose to me, that would help me rebuild a repertoire gradually and with confidence. (Years ago I completed your course about first sight reading). Thank you for your attention. Greetings Alessandro

If you've ever been to an Arizona Diamondbacks game, you've heard Bobby Freeman. You may not know you have, but you have. There's no way around it — he's been the organist for the team since they started play in 1998. A self-taught musician, he is part of the team that keeps Diamondbacks fans entertained, even when the team doesn't. For generations, the only sounds at a Major League ballpark were the crowd, the crack of the bat, or the slap of a ball smacking a glove. Then in 1941, we got organs, and an historical journey began. With music, fans were more engaged than ever... and in 1970, one woman joined the Chicago White Sox and brought her musical skill and razor wit to the keys. Thanks to Nancy Faust, inventor of the walk-up song, baseball changed forever. Learn with us, laugh with us, deal with fluctuating E with us. Let's start episode SOPP729 of Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast. This question was sent by Nick and he writes:Hi there! Been following your site for a while (and even bought a few pieces). I just recently stepped up to learn organ for my church – it's a Catholic traditional Latin church, so I'm being asked to play hymns, interludes, and to accompany chant when I can. It's been a while since I've been at the keyboard – so I've started myself over in theory books (currently in book 4 of a 10 book series) and am doing my best to start to learn pedals. I've been working with a local teacher here who is a concert organist and we've been going through the New Oxford Organ Method book along with Flor Peeters' Little Organ Book. I recently saw that you all have the total organist course and I'm interested – however I also don't want to make the mistake of grabbing too many resources. I'm emailing to get some insight into the course – is there a way it would be able to help me develop my skills faster than where I'm at now? Or, would there be a course or two that you'd recommend for purchase that would help me? Thanks for a great website – I've been enjoying the content so far (and used your Laetare Sunday prelude before Mass this year – so thank you for that!) God bless,Nick
