Striking a chord: The debate on singing in the homily

The Word: Scripture Reflections

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2024 34:15

“Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!” This is how Kim Harris starts her homily for the Second Sunday of Easter—in joyous song. “When Thomas first the tidings heard / How they had seen the risen Lord / He doubted the disciples' word. Alleluia!...” Such daring from the ambo has long struck a controversial chord with preachers and liturgists alike, prompting “Preach” host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., to ask Kim about her choice to start her homily in song. Kim, an assistant professor of African American Religious Thought and Practice at Loyola Marymount University, swiftly responds. “Not only am I a singer,” explains Kim, who is also a cantor, composer, recording artist and liturgical consultant for the Office of Black Ministry in the Archdiocese of New York. “But also, the idea of a preacher who sings as a part of their homily is part of many African American cultural traditions,” she adds. “The songs carry so many of our stories, hopes, and beliefs, and what we're thinking about and believing and preaching about.”  Listen to “Preach” as Kim shares her strategies for approaching well-known biblical narratives, such as Doubting Thomas in today's Scriptures, in a fresh and insightful manner. She also offers guidance on interpreting Scripture with reverence for its historical context while remaining sensitive to contemporary challenges, like ableism, that confront congregations today. A Preacher's Guide to Holy Week: These are long liturgies. Be brief!

The Word: Scripture Reflections

The liturgies of Holy Week need to be seen as a unity. With two weeks remaining before the start of this summit of the Christian year, the “Preach” team sought the expertise of two esteemed liturgical scholars and practitioners to give preachers a whistle-stop tour of the readings and liturgies for this sacred week. In conversation with “Preach” host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., Kim Harris and John Baldovin, S.J., discuss the connection of present-day social issues like antisemitism and state-sanctioned violence to Christ's Passion and Resurrection. They encourage preachers to weave these grim realities into their homilies for Holy Week. Amid the richness of words, actions, movement, and song in these liturgies, it's essential to uphold the values of silence and brevity in preaching during Holy Week. “The missal recommends that the preacher preach briefly,” John stresses. “It takes a lot more time to prepare a brief homily than it does to prepare a long homily.” Read the Sripture readings for Holy Week, Year B. Remembering the lunch counter sit-ins of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Kim Harris preaches for Holy Thursday, offering a reflection on creating a welcome table: "Are we looking and bending down, to wash the feet of a neighbor? Or even allowing our own feet to be washed in the ritual…? While feeling other than, feeling above or even feeling disdain for those who are in deep need. Unhoused, underfed, unremembered? Do we see, as we look at our table not only who is there, but who is not there? Who is not invited? Who is invited but cannot gain access?" Kim R. Harris is Assistant Professor of African American Thought and Practice in the Department of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. She holds a Ph.D. in Worship and the Arts from Union Theological Seminary, New York City. Dr. Harris is a member of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium and the North American Academy of Liturgy. While pursuing her Ph.D., she composed Welcome Table: A Mass of Spirituals. Welcome Table is a featured complete Mass setting in the second edition of the Black Catholic hymnal, Lead Me Guide Me and the Gather Hymnal 4th Edition (GIA Publications Inc.). Her current research concerns Black Catholic liturgy in a time of changing parish demographics and consolidations, as well as the need to diversify available liturgical resources for worship. Brennan Harris’ dad, Kip Brower Harris, took his own life on January 9, 2019, while he was employed as Dean of Students at Brigham Young University - Idaho.  During his 30 year career at BYU Idaho, Kip Harris had served twice as a Mormon bishop, served in a Mormon Stake Presidency, and was personal friends with LDS Church apostle David Bednar.  In the final years of his second term as bishop, Kip Harris became involved in an extra-marital affair with a neighbor and ward member.  Inexplicably, when Kip Harris was found in a car with this neighbor/ward member by a Sugar City police officer, this police officer informed Kip Harris' LDS church leaders (violating the separation of church and state).  Kip Harris' church leaders, in turn, notified Harris' employer (BYU Idaho), who then put Kim Harris on leave (threatening to fire him).  This horrific sequence of confidentiality violations led Kim Harris to feel like his only option was to take his own life, which he did in January of 2019.  Press coverage of Kip Harris' death can be found here and here. Brennan Harris, Kip's son, believes that the LDS Church, BYU Idaho, and Sugar City police are all partially responsible for his father’s death.  Brennan has written publicly about his father's story at these links: A brief biography of Kip Harris by his son, Brennan. A description of the events leading up Kim Harris' death by suicide, also written by Brennan.   This is Brennan’s story.

Tiger Talk Podcast by Northeast Mississippi Community College

TigerTalk is going as strong as ever and host Will Kollmeyer brings a pair of high-energy interviews to the 102nd episode of the podcast at Northeast Mississippi Community College. In the opening interview, Kollmeyer welcomes Northeast's director of eLearning Dr. Kim Harris to give her take on a trio of rankings that have come out in the recent weeks dealing with online education at the college. OnlineDegrees.com has named Northeast the second-best community college in the nation for online education, the top mathematics community college in the nation for online education and the top school in the state of Mississippi -- regardless of two- or four-year institution -- when it comes to receiving an education online. Harris talks about all the help available to students at Northeast and the appeal of online education to some students. In the closing interview, Kollmeyer sits down with Tiger head football coach Greg Davis to get his thoughts on the 2020 signing class. Davis talks about the additions to the defense, the offense, and special teams and takes the time to talk about the four new coaches that will be on the sidelines at Tiger Stadium in the fall. Davis also discusses tryouts for the Tiger football team and the annual golf tournament coming up in May. Between the segments, Kollmeyer gives a rundown of events that are happening in the next 10 days and also mentions a few events to be on the lookout for later in the month. As always, if you have any podcast ideas or want to be a guest on the podcast, drop us a line and we can get you set up to be on an upcoming episode of TigerTalk.

Tiger Talk Podcast by Northeast Mississippi Community College

In episode 97, host Will Kollmeyer welcomes eLearning coordinator Dr. Kim Harris to the podcast to talk about all the upcoming offerings for students during the Spring 2020 semester. In addition to award-winning in-classroom instruction, Northeast is second in the nation for online education and Harris' office are the people behind the scenes that make that happen. Not only does Northeast offer a wide variety of full-term online classes but it offers two eight-week short term sessions to help fit into a busy schedule. Harris talks about the advantages of online education and how many non-traditional students take that route to help balance work, family and education while accomplishing their educational dreams. In the second half of the podcast, financial aid associate Brandi Lauderdale stops by to talk about some tips and tricks to make the transition to college a little easier and how a recent change has made the financial aid office at Northeast more productive. Due to the recent change that opens the FAFSA applications in October, Northeast has already been able to process 1,100 applications for the next year. Lauderdale also talks about some of the things that incoming seniors can do during the Christmas break or the first part of the spring semester to help bolster their chances of having a stress-free financial aid experience. Between the segments, Kollmeyer gives a rundown of events that are happening in the next 10 days and also mentions a few events to be on the lookout for later in the month. Don't forget that we have also started a YouTube account, http://bit.ly/NEMCCTigerTalkYouTube , and we will be putting all our podcasts on our YouTube channel as time allows. This Harry Potter convention is jam-packed with brilliant fangirls, so much so that we had to split it into multiple episodes! (Not unlike Voldemort’s Horcruxes.) Victoria tells us all about her experience at the ultimate wizarding world convention – regaling us with tales of the thoughtful panels, making peace with not being the most knowledgeable fan in the room, snacking on Golden Snitchwiches and more. Our first LeakyCon special includes: Christine Chapman is the programs director of Uplift: Online Communities Against Sexual Violence. Uplift is a nonprofit dedicated to combating sexual abuse in online communities through education and advocacy. They work to ensure that these flourishing communities are safe for the millions of people who connect through them by offering toolkits for convention organizers, partnering with platforms, and creating campaigns like a Safer Community Pledge. Tiger Talk Podcast by Northeast Mississippi Community College

It's one year full of podcasts as we celebrate Week 52 of the TigerTalk Podcast. We officially kicked off Year Two on the TigerTalk podcast in October but we have reached 52 episodes with our latest edition. In this fifty-second (52nd) edition of the TigerTalk podcast presented by Northeast Mississippi Community College, host Will Kollmeyer welcomes NEMCC's e-Learning coordinator Dr. Kim Harris to the show as she talks about all the advantages of taking online classes through Northeast. Not only do online classes offer flexibility in one's schedule but they are also a way to help get ahead on a person's educational career. Northeast offers two-short term classes (8 weeks) and a traditional 15-week course for students to take advantage of online classes. Registration for Spring 2019 classes is currently underway and classes will start on Tuesday, January 22 (instead of the traditional Monday due to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday). Short-term classes will run from January 22 through March 15 and from March 15 through May 10 while traditional classes run from January 22 until May 3. In the second half of this week's program, Kollmeyer welcomes Booneville native Alec Coats to the podcast to help us celebrate our veterans. Coats, who served in the United States Air Force for five years and is making his transition to the Air Force Reserves in Little Rock, Ark., is in his first semester as a student at Northeast and is taking advantage of everything the college has to offer. In addition to being an engineering student with some of the best faculty in the country, Coats also has his daughter enrolled in the NEMCC Childcare and is a worker in the Student Success Center. Kollmeyer wraps up the podcast with a new addition to the publication -- an extended version of what is coming up on campus that details events happening on and around the Northeast campus in a daily breakdown. It contains one of the most comprehensive lists of events and happenings on campus -- so if you have an event or happening on campus and want it mentioned on the podcast, please reach out. If you haven't subscribed to the podcast, now would be a good time to subscribe to stay up-to-date on all the happenings on the Northeast campuses and hear in-depth interviews with guests each week.

Catalano is a jewelry designer using sea glass or sometimes referred to as beach glass. There is a SPECIAL CONTEST going on, and the winner of the beautiful and original necklace and earring set will be announced live on the air. Catalano says, "For me it all started several years ago when I discovered "Glass Beach" located in Fort Bragg, California. I then with my hands and my imagination began attempting to create something from the eclectic organic sea glass jewels. I began by crudely drilling pieces and stringing them together. The end result was my eco-friendly version of sea glass bracelets, necklaces, key chains and then earrings. I had no previous jewelry making experience other that what I created using the raw material I found at "Glass Beach" initially. The pieces continued to evolve through a variety of sea glass drilling techniques and input from others. I found that my crude beginnings found my jewelry being a beautiful accessory for the beach and also, wearable to special occasions. I grew into more intricate pieces some are light weight and others weightier such as double stranded sea glass bracelets and necklaces from my "Romance Collection". My designs have continued to grow and progress into the designs you see featured on my website today." http://www.seaglassessentials.com Syndicated Live from Chicago, Joshua-Paul, the best man to hit the airwaves since Howard Stern. Dmitry Orlov, author of “Reinventing Collapse” tells of his experience in Russia during that country's collapse to warn Americans that the a similar event has begun in the U.S. There are five stages of the collapse: financial collapse, commercial collapse, political collapse, social collapse and cultural collapse. Orlov believe the U.S. is undergoing a financial collapse now. “Financial institutions become insolvent; savings are wiped out, and access to capital is lost,” Orlov writes. Does that sound familiar? With commercial collapse, store shelves are stripped bare. Political collapse is a breakdown of public order. In social collapse people lose faith that society will take care of them and begin to fend for themselves. Cultural collapse is when even those bonds are broken. In seeking to turn those hard times into good times Kim Harris of Midlands Minerals will update us on that gold mining company's progress. Also with us, Chen Lin, Roger Wiegand and Pat Gorman.
