Realistic water and wetness were seen for years as a litmus test for photorealistic graphics, but by the PS3 generation, developers had it nailed: water shaders had become so sophisticated that Nathan Drake would emerge from a full dousing of seawater and slowly dry off, with his clothes soaked, and skin glistening. It was a mesmerising effect: it's difficult to describe to younger people how incredible it was to see this mundane environmental phenomenon happening, in real time, to a video game character. Of course, now these graphical effects are so commonplace that they scarcely raise an eyebrow. Aloy's clothing dries off at varying rates, does it? Who cares. Seen it, mate. But given that, I thought it would be a challenge for our regular panel to come up with the best game ever where your character gets wet and stays wet for a bit. Tegan and Silvana watch Season 3, Episode 21, "Crystal Skull". This episode is Daniel-heavy and features Daniel's grandfather, Nick. Nick is not a fan of Daniel's theory about the pyramids, and Daniel doesn't really believe that Nick saw giants after looking into the eyes of a crystal skull he found on earth. Silvana is concerned the CGI in this episode is bad enough that children will judge us if we show it to them now. Like we did our fathers for old Doctor Who and aliens dressed in bubble wrap.  It appears archaeology runs deep in Daniel's family. Is archaeology only possible if you have a family legacy of it? It's Indiana Jones, Nathan Drake, and Lara Croft too! What's that about? How is Daniel so bad at presenting with slide decks? Silvana and Tegan discuss the issue of the "magical black person" who is typically a person who helps a white main character achieve their goals. These characters are often not human themselves too.  The ladies wonder what has happened to Nyan, and also worry about Grandpa Nick staying with gas giants. Will they know what to feed him? PlayStation 3's Uncharted trilogy is inarguably a vital stepping stone in the history of Sony. These three titles helped breathe life into a once-struggling console, and gave the brand amazing momentum running into the following generation. But Naughty Dog's series about a globetrotting adventurer hit a bit of a snag when PS3 turned to PS4. Partially through development, Uncharted 4 would lose its creative force and writer, Amy Hennig, leaving the half-finished projects in the hands of the two men who just delivered The Last of Us: Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley. It was going to be a hard task to make this one work. But ultimately, the team delivered in spades. Uncharted 4 is a fitting and high-quality end to Naughty Dog's Uncharted arc, visiting an older, wiser, and more reluctant Nathan Drake who's sucked back into 'the life' by his own brother, and by his own inability to let go of the past. Wonderfully paced and beautiful to look at, and with amazing performances and fun gameplay, A Thief's End is a must-play, and we're thrilled to spend a good-long time discussing it here on KnockBack.
